Terrieut.and Laurent Simard. The two had travelled extensively in the North, in search of bone carvings and drawings.but this was their first visit to Labrador where some of the best examples of sandstone sculpture are found. With the assistance of the Canadian Government.Eskimos have established many co-operatives in the region INDEX Churches .6 Classified .10 Editorial .4 Women .8,9 more time for stone carving. The traditional craft has gradually become their chief source of income. In 1952 Charlie Sheeguatik.a village leader set up the first independent co-operative for Eskimo art.Its founder, he is the only Eskimo member of the Canadian Sculpture Association.Out of a total population of about 500.at least 150 men and women of the village produce these carvings, Mr.Ter- rieut said. All are sold and while a few inferior pieces are turned out, the overall quality is high. The Eskimos use the money they receive to buy prefabricated houses from the government. These cost $1500 of which the government pays one third.Povungnituk is well above the tree line in Labrador so, all building materials must be, flown in.There is only one stone building in the town.| Stone is of
