.By FRANCES GOLTMAN MORLEY CALVERT .A VERY BUSY MUSICIAN Some people choose a profession and remain in one section throughout their career, but not so Morley Calvert, esteemed member of the music field who excels in a number of things.Although born in Brant- ford, Ontario, Mr.Calvert received his elementary and high school educatoin in Montreal, subsequently went on to obtain his B.Mus.in Music Education at McGill University, his Licentiate for the trumpet and the LRSM (London) diploma for pianoforte, Morley Calvert, after 12 years as Band Music Instructor at Westmount High School, has been appointed to the new Lindsay Place High School in Valois. This new addition to the many high schools under the jurisdiction of the Protestant Board of Greater Montreal is indeed fortunate to start off with the talents of an organizer like Mr.Calvert.Among the many activities, besides his important school position, Mr.Calvert leads the renowned Montreal Citadel Band of The Salvation Army (before becoming the conductor, he played the cornet in the ensemble for 19 years) .10 years ago, he started instrumental classes in Westmount High School, which were the first of their kind in the Province. For 14 years he has led the McGill Redmen Band and six years ago became director of The McGill Symphonic Band.Is Morley Calvert busy?Summers have been spent in directing or teaching at summer camps in the United States and Canada.ORGANIZES OWN CAMP Five years ago this energetic musician began his own summer music camp.Since Mr.Calvert started the project, it has grown for 30 to 85 campers. These music- conscious young people come from some 12 high schools in Montreal district and Toronto.Following is a partial list of girls and boys who reside in Notre Dame de Grace, Westmount and Montreal West, who attended the one week session Music Camp (last week in August): Yale Shap, Leslie Uyeda, Dixie McMorran, Norma Lessard, Lee Griffiths, Nancy Brodie, Wendy Anderson, David Shaf- felburg, Carole Henderson, Elizabeth Campbell, Bruce Davis, Leslie Forbes, Paul Latour, Deirde Vogan, John Kotrly, Cynthia Duff. The faculty this season included Mr.and Mrs.Alex Thomson, wind and string instructors from Verdun High School, Peter Wilcox fron Dunton High Séhool, Robert Ryker, tuba and Vincent Clarke, trombonist, both of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.Mr.Ryker is also the tuba player in the Montreal Brass Quintet. The Montreal Festivals commissioned Mr.Calvert to compose a number for the Quintet and it was the “From The Monteregian Hills” which was performed this summer when the Montreal Brass Quintet played in the Museum Gardens. It was very well received and should remain in their repertoire.Since the camp originally started with instrumentalists from Westmount High, Mr.Calvert called it “Westmount Music Camp” but as he is no longer-a member of the staff, next year it is to be renamed.Following school’ closing last June, Mr.Calvert left immediately to spend the summer guest conducting and lecturing in Wisconsin, California and Georgia, arriving back in Canada in time to direct his own music camp. What does Morley Calvert do in his spare time, if any?He composes and arranges and has several published and recorded compositions to his credit.NEXT WEEK: SEASON FOR YOUNG PEOPLE — MSO AND PRO MUSICA.a ee Te eT Ta, ROOFING _& Protestant pedagogues of Quebec returned to work from over two months’ ho- hidav.Yet today and tomorrow tJasses are halted, the children al home. And there is Thanksgiving holiday Monday, too.Why must the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers hold its private, professional business on public time?Time for which taxpayers pay.Class time which children lose just as they hit stride after the long summer layoff. We know a lot of teachers. To many of them this is a five-day long weekend in glorious autumn weather. Some will at best register at the convention — and be on their way.Time for PAPT sessions is during the generous summer, Christmas and Easter vacations. The QE Hospital needs contributions A ANY people will this week receive a short, but important, letter from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, asking for help financially to wipe out the 1961 deficit of $143,208.This deficit came about because many people believe that the Quebec Hospital Service Plan solves all financial problems of hospitals. This is not the case. Many essential services are not covered by the plan. The campaign will be conducted by mail only, and will run from October 8 to October 22.THEY YOU say Speed sign posting is ridiculous Sir : Your Mr.Austin Carr, who titillatingly told of his twin tangle with Liston and a higbway cop, ‘Examiner page 5 last week) missed the main point.Quebec is forging ahead in highway improvements, but the archaic concept that we should be speeded up only to be slowed down lingers and is.unfortunately, even being extended.Instrument of this folly is the ‘‘Vitesse-Speed 30" sign.Any coincidental proximity of two or more dwellings, however grand or humble, with a general store and/or a church brings out the sign erectors with their assorted ‘30s’’ — and I do mean assorted, for these days they are in different sizes and with every possible wording variant.Be it a 60-mph, dead- straight, unobstructed highway, or a meandering, crowded, slowed-down, unpaved Taschereau regime relic of a country road: still, it's 30- mph through any outpost of civilization.Whether the provincial route runs straight and clean, full width, clear view through a community or whether it narrows into a one-lane side street of overhanging balconies and sharp-cornered intersections — in either case, 30 miles per.Quebeckers who have motored in other provinces and the States, as do our visitors, know that things are different elsewhere.Slow-down speeds are frequently 40 or 45 mph.If there is no real hazard or other reason for going slow, it is not demanded. And the restricted zone is as shorl as possible. But here in La Belle Province, not only arc more 30- limit zones appearing constantly along arteries specifically designed to speed traffic up.but they are continually being streached out.Just let some local alderman’s brother- in-Jaw build a new house on the outskirts of the village and, before he has moved in, some joker from the provincial roads department has come along and moved that black-and-white “30” a couple of hundred yards further out into the hinterland.1 don't object to stopping the scarred French meadows at the Battle of the Somme. The British infantrymen were astounded, The Germans were aghast.A German war correspondent wrote: “We stared and stared as if we had lost the power of our limbs. The monsters approached slowly, hobbling, rolling and rocking. But they approached .” Victor Huffam, of Hatch End, Middlesex, remembers the scene well, Only three On those first tanks was focussed the attention of Winston Churchill, Lloyd George, Haig, Joffre.Victor Huffman was more personally concerned, He was in one of them. Now a vigorous 72 and boss of a company producing precision tools in England, Mr.Huffman said recently: “I take each September 15 quietly.A day for remembering.” On his office walls are photographs of the young men who went with him into the first tank action.Only three are now alive, “It was a day on which we felt a certain amount of , , .what can we say?“Valour?Yes, perhaps. And fright.of course, “But what a pride it was to be there, at something new.Historic, of course, “But what a bloody shambles!" 1t was the vision of Winston Churchill that produced the tank as a vital new weapon, It was the mistiming of a general, Haig, that put them into battle before they were ready. In secret It was the skill of Victor Huffman.and a score of other young lieutenants that drove them towards the German lines.‘We “We trained for four months in the country on Lord lveagh's estate.I remember it so well.We weren't allowed out and hardly anybody was ONE OF THE FIRST BRITISH TANKS allowed in.‘Once a month they sent a lorry to take some of the of- licers, under armed guard, to the Angel at Bury St.Edmunds for drinks and dinner. They took the N.C.O.s to the Suffolk Hotel. Then back in the lorries to our secret camp.” It was all exciting and exhilarating.‘We rather liked the idea because although we were living in restricted conditions we were going into action surrounded by armour plating.“We didn’t know then that it was only three-sixteenths of HE an inch thick, and no good.” Churchill's idea was to wait until there was sufficient strength of well-equipped tanks and highly trained crews to crush the enemy. He wrole afterwards: “The first 20 tanks, in spite of my protests and the far more potent objections of Mr.Asquith and Mr.Lloyd George, were That is no doubt the reason for the late start in Cote St.Luc.We might add that recreation in Cote St.Luc would have been much better off if the now defunct Recreation Association had been encouraged by the Re- creation Department and the City Council rather than discouraged.! with a four touchdown perform- downs each.Kevin Cooper also ance, Neil Fernandes, the team's | tallied on a fine run from his quarterback scored twice.Peter own 45.Brian Vaux added a Vuillemot was the ground gainer for the winners while Wayne Colomb was outstanding for the losers Mules shade Broncs In last Saturday morning's second game the Mules defcat- ed the Brones 31-18.These two teams are now tied for second place.Halfback, Gordie Norris and Dick Aylett scored two touch-! leading single.Carlos Araujo gave a sparkling defensive performance and Jimmy Hotton also came up with a fine game filling in at the quarterback slot as well as his usual defensive end position.‘I'he Brones' Quarterback, Dave Beasant, displayed € fine passing game hitting Steven Bourke, Wayne Barrow who scored twice and Bruce Norris repeatedly.Bourke also scored on a 1 yard plunge, this play having been set up on a 40 yard run by Nor ris.the subtle difference.is here.'CF STEREO 'CF Radio is now broadcasting in full, Multiplex Stereo sound. You can turn yeur living toom into a concert hall, simply by tuning 92.5 mes.Or.you enjoy the same fine music on AM at the familiar 600 spot.Enjoy these Stereo programmes “SOUND STAGE" from 8 ‘til 11 P.M.every evening (8:30 'til 11 P.M, Thursdays and Fridays) and ‘STAR TIME" on Sundays from 12 Noon ‘til 5 P.M.Both offer the “best of two worlds’, AM or Stereo Multiplex FM fiom 'CF Radio.THE PIONEERS IN STEREO IN MONTREAL 600 kcs AM MARCONI RADIO FV 92.5 mes “THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS” 7961 'S 4290420 ‘Abpis4 ‘soujOxZ3 Junowysam dy] 61 The Westmount Examiner, Friday, October 5, 1962 20 Until November 15th Only!
