Sabdra i + (Continued on page 11) Radar, turbos available to all By Larry Mclnnis FUI IIIE III III MIE M Pilots of small aircraft may look to England for a new navigational aid that will take the guesswork out of cross- country flying, an announcement from London says.Although the machine is not yet on the market, it is fairly well along in testing, and will go into manufacture soon. The idea came to a businessman named Bennett Halpin, a radar and electronics expert, who decided to learn to fly last year as a result of his efforts to have the government put the huge princess flying-boats into service commercially.During his instruction he saw that relatively few aircraft were adequately equipped for proper cross-country flight, and felt a low-cost aid was needed to replace the not-too-accurate map reading chore of most pilots. The machine has been named Adas (aircraft directional accuracy system) and it will be cheap enough to fit in the budget of most private aircraft owners, Mr.Halpin says. The prototype worked, but Halpin felt it needed improvement. In the one-year period he put it on his own Cessna aircraft, making modifications as they seemed necessary.Adas consists of three black boxes, a control box, a small radio and a miniature cathode-ray tube.By selecting the frequency of any radio beacon on the route, Adas receives on the screen the morse coding of the beacons identification letters. These morse letters can be replaced with two small dots which oper- ate in a vertical scale.A flick of a switch and the dots move.If the dots move upwards, the aircraft is travelling toward the beacon. If they move downwards, the aircraft is moving away from the beacon. As long as the pilot is flying towards the beacon, or away from it, the dots will stay close together. If he strays off course, they move further apart.Steering in a direction which keeps the dots as close together as possible brings the aircraft directly over the ground beacon.» » & About half Canada's CF-100s will be sold for scrap this year, starting early in June, it has been announced by the Depart ment of National Defence.Four of nine home-based squadrons will be disbanded, putting 72 of the $700,000 aircraft on the scrap heap. This will leave five home squadrons to defend Canada with their CF- 100s, first made in 1951, unless a final decision is made to equip them with highlighted in a case Wednesday before Acting Municipal Court Judge Alex McT.Stalker in which the accused was charged with and found not guilty of attempted suicide.Dr.Donald Mackay, medical officer for Westmount, opined that the accused in jail on a drunk charge when he hung himself with a strip of mattress covering intended only to draw attention to himself and not to do away with himself. He conceded that if no one had gone in to the cell to cut down the accused, he might very well have died.Officer O'Sullivan testified he arrested accused at Sherbrooke and Victoria on May 22.He saw two fellows half dragging.half carrying accused out of a car on to the street. One of the men approached the constable and asked him to take accused off their hands. When he asked if there was any money available to send accused home in a cab they advised him they did not wish to become involved any further.Propped up on the steps of Macy’s Drugstore, accused told O'Sullivan, “Give me a break.Leck me up for protection for the night.” Sergeant Joel Schaeffer testified the accused came im to the West- mount police station about 9:45 p.m.and was charged with being a common drunk. He said, “When I asked the accused to come back with me so I could search him he told me, Leave me alone, don't touch me.He was very drunk and vituperative, cursing and yelling at the police.’ 10:15 we heard yelling and very much noise, a loud banging.I went and looked and saw accused hanging from the top of the door of his cell with a piece of cloth around his neck.He was trying to regain his balance by hanging on to the door and yelling.I held him up on my shoulder and called Officer Bain to get a chair and untie the knot in the cloth around his neck.” CHESHAM HOTEL Going to 'A NNOUNCEMENT last winter that this fall the Boy Scouts would become Welfare Federation's 34th agency receiving Red Feather campaign funds caused little comment. We withheld ours. Here it is.The Scouts, of course, are now split. The non.Protestant boys must now be financed on their own or else be taken in, in turn, by the Federation of Catholic Charities, the Federation of Jewish Philan- Federation’s campaign results by the amount of the Boy Scouts’ requirements? This remains to be seen. Both the Scouts and the Federation are wonderful people, deserving of widespread support. But this doesn’t mean we must approve of their marriage. The 33 “appeals in one” represented by the scarlet plume seemed unwieldy, big- business and impersonal as it was.The good will go up at least $5 a morth as that is what happened to the other tenants this year. The landlady installed new electrtcal wiring and used that capital improvement as an excuse to raise the rent.To my knowledge this has worked quite a hardship on at lcast one of the other tenants.I am just wondering if $5 a month is all 1 have to worry about or whether the landlady has some information on the future status of the rent control law which has escaped my attention to date.Could you please check on this matter and let me know.It might make an interesting story, at least to other tenants and two-storey house that fronts on Elm Avenue, just a short distance south of Sherbrooke Street. The roof on that house is almost level, and it makes a most excellent place for feathered planes to make a two- legged landing. Some two weeks ago 1 noticed that a crow was busily examining the eaves and around the chimney of the aforementioned roof top, with a view to making for himself a dinner on some succulent eggs or, perchance, some recently hatched baby birds.A day or two later the same crow was back again on that same roof top.I did not see the “fowl” deed being done.and can only surmise that the pigeon was taken by surprise immediately upon landing and before it had any chance to defend itself from its attacker. However, 1 witnessed the actions of that black marauder, after it had slain the pigeon. With one foot braced against its body it plucked one by one the feathers from the unresist- ing body, and soon dozens of white feathers were floating around in the air and just above the roof top.The crow appeared unconcerned as to whether it was being watched, and finally it began to dine on the body of the slain bird.It fed for some time, then disappeared. It was back on the second and on the third day following and, finally, it dragged what remained of the bird in back of the chimney, and 1 have not since witnessed his return. Is he hiding somewhere with his head Each a separate piece: 1.Little Barcarolle, 2.Interlude, 3.Little March, 4.Dialogue, 5.Shadows, 6.March.Parade of of the Pookas (Oliver Ditson Co.) is an attractive little recital number and March of The Minute Men (Theodore Presser Co.) would certainly appeal to boys.A 17-page volume entitled Musical Rainbow is a set of eight studies with this note .To the teacher: each of these ‘‘Studies In Color” is intended to present a different technical problem for left amd right hand, alternately, and at the same time to offer the student a taste for contemporary harmony | and counterpoint. They also may prove to be useful little pieces for pupils’ recitals. And — last but not least — 1 hope they will add and brighten his efforts to bow'’.Vladimir Padwa.I have purposely left for last of the Paganini Variations from the 24th Caprice as 12 elementary studies for piano. He has caught every important phrase, theme, each significant technical problem that any student, regardless of the type of music he likes best, will enjoy this momentous work. The very fact that Mr.Padwa has been able to sustain the Paga- nin} structure in elementary form, without losing the magnetic melody is a worthwhile feat.1 for one am going to use these with a number of students.Doubtless instructors as the pupil will in studying them.SAYING OF THE WEEK: Health is so necessary to all the duties, as well as pleasures of life, that the crime of squandering it is equal to the folly.—Samuel Johnson, 17208- 1784.Platter 3 Matter Sy BOB KEEN Show Girl.Original Cast Recording R 80001.Viewers who have seen Carol Channing on the Ed Sullivan show know her as the naive mimic whose particular vocal talent is a sort of Al Jolson - Ethel Merman combination. This s well demonstrated in this musical revue most of which is built around Miss Channing's unusual delivery and on the disc comprises a dozen numbers from her alone. These are all in comic vein, running the gamut of plain farce:- ‘The Inside Story’, ‘The Story of Marie’, ‘Join Us In A Little Cup of Tea’, to the innuendo type such as ‘Calypso Pete’ one of the funniest on the disc. She is also assisted by Jules Munshin and a talented French group Les Quat’ Jeudis who score heavily in ‘The Girl Who Lived in Montparnasse’ and Mambo-Java'.Good for laughs and Carol Channing fans.Deutsche Grammophon: Had the opportunity to listen to a brace of discs from this imparted label which deserves a nod for their fine packaging and quiet recorded sides. On LPEM 19225 Russian Orchestral Music with the Orchestra Lamoureaux, Paris, conducted by Igor Markevitch there are some Russian fireworks in Tchaikovsky's description of Dante's Inferno, the ‘Francesca da Rimini’ fantasia, not one of his most popular work; the quietly descriptive ‘In The Steppes of Central Asia’ by Alexander Borodin; Glinka's peppy ‘Ruslan and Ludmilla’ overture; and the brilliant, typically Russian, orchestral showpiece ‘Fragment de I’Apocalypse’ of Anatole Liadov, a rarely-heard composer.Performance and recording are excellent. For collectors of opera ‘excerpts’, we heartily recommend LPEM 19224 Don Giovanni by Mozard, sung in Italian with an excellent European cast headed by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.This one successfully captures the Mozartian old-world charm in superb solos, duets, groups and choruses, maintained with a lively pace and fine balance, backed by the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin conducted by Ferenc Friscsay. The Libretto is provided in English and Italian.James Wilson was born in 1763 in Derry, N.H., and was the maker of the first pair of terrestrial and celestial globes in America.Derry is the home of America’s first Space Man, Commander Alan B.Shepard, Jr.Newopera company is formed “Werther” and “The Barber of Seville” are the first two of four operas Lhe newly formed opera company, Petit Opera de Montréal, hopes to present during its first season's program.Mayor Jean Drapeau is honorary president of the company, which has been granted a provincial charter, and will have an authorized capital of $40,000.The executive committee is composed of: René Gerge, president; Seals | lounched by Oratory Saint Joseph's Oratory hos just launched its fourth campaign of seals for the purchase of stained- glass windows for the Basilica. Most of the work to be carried out in 1961 in the internationally- known Shrine founded by Brother André in 1904 will be concentrated on the setling of 24 stained-glass windows in the Basilica. The various scenes illustrate the miraculous interventions of the Virginal Spouse of Mary in Canada. They are the work of a Quebec artist, Marius Plamondon, who is professor at the School of Fine Arts in Quebec City. His art is reminiscent of that of the Gothic cathedrals, but his inspiration is quite contemporary. The main purpose of the stained- glass windows is to create in the Basilica, facing Queen Mary road, an atmosphere of prayer foreseen by the architects and indispensable to the communion with God.Bey'scivh .(Continued from page 2) The Westmount Examiner, Fridey, Mey 26, 196) e e the professional show business Minister talks RESULTS du tmnt.tn.mt Ded ak ve you like #8 The Eastern Townships, Newport and Stowe North Hatley in Quebec and Vermont's Newport have two very important attractions in common.Besides an abundance of golf courses within reasonable distances, North Hatley has the beautiful (this is the description in the advertisements — and they lie not!) Lake Massawippi, and Newport is situated on the southern end of the equally wondrous Lake Memphremagog. Some of the best boating is to be had on either body of water; the beaches are ideal for bathing and sunning, and according to the officials of the Lake Massawippi Fish and Game Protection Club, you haven't fished until you've done so at Massawippi.(Walt Woodward, the agile barkeep at the Connaught Inn, North Hatley, gave us the Indian interpretation of the name, but it has eluded us.) At Newport, Vermont, we heart- fly recommend to you Jobm and Dorethy Prouty's Governor Prouty Inn.This tasteful and charming spot is famous for food, and equally so their Terrace Lounge for libations. The lodgings, you may be sure, are up to the same standards.Another swell spot is the Hunter Lodge. This is a well-run place with 28 self-contained units — in other words you may cook to your heart’s content — and is operated by Theresa and Austin Lahar. Both establishments are pleasantly familiar to Montrealers. At Ayer’s Cliff in Quebec, Archie Stafford’s community of lodges, cottages, two bars, tennis courts and nearby golf courses, the Ripple Cove Inn is actualy something to see and visit. The Anchorage Bar attached to one of the attractive buildings has a smart landing area directly off ome side to receive cruising guests from Lake Massa- wippi who have developed a thirst.Very handy, indeed! Mogy Campbell has taken over the Brae Mor in North Hatley and renamed it the Terrace Club. Not only a new name, but a complete face-lifting from stem to stern, Census facts The 1961 Census begins Thursday.June 1.The bulk of counting is expected to be completed in cities in two weeks, and in rural areas in three weeks. In the Middle Ages censuses were taken to levy taxes and raise armies. But Canadian law forbids the use of census data for any such purposes.Canada has the distinction of taking the first ‘‘modern’’ census. This was the Census of the Colony of New France in 1666, ordered by Louis XIV.It recorded a population of 3.215 compared with an expected 18,200,000 this year.Answers given to the census taker are strictly confidential.Every census taker is under oath not to reveal a single item about any individual, under penalty of fine, imprisonment or both. For the 1961 Census, Canada will have 1,336 census commissioners and about 26,000 census takers. Each census taker will travel from door to door collecting the facts required.A =n within and without, is currently being done by the enterprising Mogy, and when this hits the newstands it will be a fait accompli.(Love writers who slip in little French phrases like that.Doa't you?) More on this spot later. The Hovey Manor under the very capable direction of Bob Brews is still the same unassuming, but very smart location.Lovely surroundings, magnificent view with an excellent cuisine, and very comfortable rooms — and what a bar! North Hatley may well be proud. And golf, tennis, swimming, sum- ning, boating and what-have-you at your door step.At Stowe, Vermont, Burr Vail is again directing traffic for the Stowe Area Association after an absence of à few months.Vail sends in a partial list of coming activities planned for that terrific resort area. They are as follows: July 8, Mountain Top Festival; July 15 and 16, Sports Car Rally; July 16, AKC Dog Show; July 20, Rotary Auction; July 27, 28 and 29, Invitational Juried Craft Show; Golf Tournament scheduled for sometime in August; August 12 and 13, Stowe Horse Show; August 14 to 20, Stowe Invitational Temmis Tournament, and August 26 and 27 Antique Car Rally. There's a further schedule planned for September and October which we'll give you later.Of course, as the Summer progresses and the events take place, we'll dutifully keep you posted. That's all for this week, kiddies.Drive carefully, and stay happy! Red Shield appeal nears top Carman A.Jerry.general chairman of the Red Shield Appeal, today reported that the campaign was within $73,000 of its goal of $335.000.“We now have subscriptions totalling $262,700 and there are still enough cards outstanding to put this appeal over the top,” he said. The Advance Gifts Division is already over the top and the Men's and Women's Special names are close to it,” he said.He said the response from employees had been particularly good but had not quite reached its quota.while the Metropolitan Division, representing the house- to-house canvass was edging up.Division represents about one- third of total objective but it is naturally slower in attaining its mark due to the large number of people and cards to be covered I am confident that we will reach our objective. But it will take the concerted efforts of our canvassers and the customary fine generosity of the people of this area to achieve this,” he said.Cleaning good idea to take our outfits. We did, and it turned out just as we hoped. We started out late Saturday p.m.and headed some 20 miles up into the Green Mountains from Lyndonville. With B.J.(whose name is also Rice) we headed for the wild country and a couple of dirt roads. We were about 2,000 feet above sea level and hit this lake, about one-half wide.» » » IN 45 MINUTES my son and I had caught our you wonder how they saw it.Trout were jumping at the hook even if you held it about six inches above the water.* + ON SHORE WAS Chippy, another good Lyndonville friend. He later joimed Scotty, one of the bantam baseball coaches in years gone by and brought in ther limit.Luigi (Louis) who operates one of the local grills was presented with the catch and one hour later my wife and I had a lovely
