According to Bowser, some residents, and the Healthy City Environment Committee, had been urging the City to install additional racks for bicycles since the current city council took office.“We looked at possible locations, and then we were always dealing with the problem of the size of the conventional four-rail rack that you'll see,” he said.“There’s one near City Hall, for example, where you push the bike in.“They have a large footprint, and so the larger the footprint the harder it is to fit them into a convenient or appropriate space. And so it was a question of design .You're not occupying any more real estate, but you are accommodating more bicycles. That was the plan .Council hopes that the units will be well-received.” LOCAL NEWS If the trial period study ends on a positive note, additional racks could installed throughout the commercial sectors of Westmount.“If they're well used and people like them, then we'll get more and we’ll spread them around,” said Bowser. The locations where the new racks are being installed are Sherbroooke (north side) between Grosvenor and Victoria at each parking meter; Sherbrooke (south side) between Claremont and Prince Albert; Victoria (west side) Sherbrooke to Somerville at each parking meter; Greene (both sides) Sherbrooke to laneway (east side) and Sherbrooke to parking lot (west side); Greene and de Maisonneuve intersection, in front of TD Bank, in front of Bank of Montreal, and in front of Cinq Saisons on Greene Avenue.1616 Ste.Catherine St.West (corner of Guy St., 8 Guy-Concordia) NOW OPEN! LOCAL NEWS Urban wildlife is here to stay — and it’s bat season >Michelle Levy rban centers share their space with urban wildlife, much to the chagrin of many citizens. The words ‘private property’ do not apply to the skunks, raccoons, squirrels and bats that like to squat in attics, under patios and inside chimneys. However, there is a way to get the message across and in a humane fashion.Westmount is home to a variety of wildlife that has made its way down the mountain.Within the island of Montreal, there are as many as 15 to 30 raccoons and skunks per square kilometre. For sate cohabitation to succeed, the first rule is to protect the home ee prevent animals from finding or creating entry points.Bill Dowd, president of Humane Wildlife Control, says the most important action to take when dealing with wild animals is not to give them a reason to visit in the first place.Humane Wildlife Control is a company with service centers throughout Ontario and Quebec. They respond to calls regarding wildlife conflicts and provide solutions that benefit both home owners and urban wildlife.A family of raccoons has made its home in an attic just chewing distance from electrical wires.(Photo.Bill Dowd) Dowd advises against facing off with animals hike raccoons and bats and recommends calling in professionals at first sighting.People should always be cautious.“Just like you don’t want to go and pet a stray dog or cat.” Dowd says.Westmount Public Security responds to residential calls but will often refer the callers to wildlife control experts. They will not remove the animal.“When vou remove a raccoon, another will take its place,” said Richard Blondin, director of Westmount Public Security.Humane Wildlite Control wholeheartedly agrees.Removing animals, Dowd said.“creates a vacuum for others to move in.Raccoons are here to stay.” What's more.relocating a family of animals is equivalent to sentencing them to death because they will be placed in unfamiliar surroundings and new territories in which to forage. However, to close off an animal's entrance to the nest it has made in your home simply forces it to return to another of the five or six den sites the animal has in ats territory. This is the suggested humane solution.Susan Spencer encountered a family of skunks living under her deck on Lansdowne Avenue. She called Humane Wildlife Control who initially placed a trap door in the small opening used by the skunks, allowing them to leave but not return. The company also placed wire meshing deep into the ground so the skunks could not dig themselves back underneath the deck.“Your home is probably the biggest investment you will make and you should protect it,” Dowd said. That includes proofing chimneys, roofs, foundations and any other small openings animals can access.Dowd alse warned that August 1s bat season. This is the time of year when young bats learn how to tly and accidentally end up in attics and wall shafts.Humane Wildlife Control receives about 150-200 bat related calls during this time. The danger posed by bats is twofold: bites Bat colonies in attics can range in size from five to hundreds of bats.(nts sit pow from rabid bats and spores found in bat droppings are both extremely hazardous 10 your health.Dowd says not to go after bats with brooms and tennis rackets, as any escaping hquids expelled by a blow to the animal can also be dangerous, For these reasons Humane Wildlife Control stresses the importance of animal-proofing homes. And of course, when a wildlife conflict or encounter does occur, don’t do at yourself — call in the experts. For urban wildlife inquiries or emergencies, you can reach Humane Wildlife Control at: After all, if you walk eastward along de aisonneuve Boul.from Victoria Village, you cannot ignore the beautiful collection of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers that mark the entrance to the Park. Then you realize that it covers what was once a minor autoroute through the Park and have to agree the change was an imaginative use of taxpayers’ money and a terrific enhancement to the City.I think many would agree that was a great legacy provided by John Shingler, who guided it through council during his one- term as an alderman.Of course, the present council will produce things of lasting value, although it has only two years remaining to do so! Councillor Martin has now accepted my challenge to prove that the present council’s “body of work” will make the history books. He highlights 17 events or actions that will, he claims, build this council's legacy.Certainly, it is an impressive To-Do List.Hybrid vehicles — Selection took a year longer than expected, but we persevered.Staff eventually proposed models that are good both for the environment and operating costs. It marked a subtle policy change —these objectives must be met with future purchases.Communication —At first, Council must do its work privately, until we are sure we know everything we ought to know.We debate the issues.Sometimes it takes a year, but we end up, almost always, unanimous. Then we have to reach out to citizens, and it takes a lot of work if that is to be well done.Preparation — 1 like to think that, as we carefully prepare for the future, this is a legacy in itself.Currently, if we can establish an environment strategy so that we have a plan for treating all the opportunities brought to our attention, then 1 think we will have created a legacy.1 know you cannot touch or feel it, but it is there for the future.Sports project — The new Sports Complex, Arena or whatever it will be called is not going to be built in the next year and a half.In fact, probably the most we can do in this mandate is to get our heads around the project: to define it, perhaps design it and say “This is how it will be financed” To know where we are going within two years would be amazing, based on my engineering experience. We have to know what the stakeholders and the financiers expect.Green buildings — The new complex will be the ideal opportunity to embrace green technology.Additionally, we should take a lead in demonstrating how savings can be applied to existing buildings.1 hope we can take the initiative to show residents how it can be done.Visual pollution — Why do we tolerate electrical and other cables on the skyline? Why don’t we get them buried?Admittedly, that brings maintenance problems to the people who have to repair them.1 know it 1s not as easy as it looks, but we have to try.Noise — As someone who lives in a house with open windows in the summer, 1 have sensitivity to outside noise.Council is looking at a new bylaw for air conditioners “ because too many of them are making a nuisance. It 1s our duty to allow everyone to enjoy their property. In making the town better with such laws, the average citizen doesn't see the result, but it is there.Hydro metering — We should be thinking of a plan — or even beginning to implement it — for metering our power supply with peak and off-peak rates. It would also be very cost efficient as long as the expense of metering does not exceed the savings. It is a very common system in Europe.Water metering — l’m looking forward to Dessau-Soprin’s report on our infrastructure, because we need to know the expected replacements over the next two decades. Then we can look at other opportunities. There in no doubt that metering potable water is one of the best ways to reduce consumption. At present there is no incentive to turn off lawn sprinklers even when it rains! It will mean a different contract with the City of Montreal, because currently it saves us nothing by reducing consumption.Meantime, council is looking at changing the bylaw to make better use of rain water.Continued on page 8 DOROTHY RAICH 514-931-7190 Easy living with a private elevator leading to 2,400 sq.ft.of living space.3+1 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, garage, quality construction.Close to Geene Avenue, where all the action 1s ! $925,000 1916531 Groupe Sutton Centre Ouest Inc.FREE — Starting from rE ee BN PT $3495 Exceptional Miele quality and dependability - built to last 20 years Gentle Fabric care Patented Honeycomb Drum Design 3100 ENERGY STAR’ rated miele.ca * Model W4800 and T9800 Buy a Miele Full-Size laundry pair and receive a $600 compact canister vacuum With Miele, you'll be amazed at what comes out in the wash.Free compact canister vacuum 1s a $4210 HERA with an approximate retail value of $600 “Free vacuum” offer «5 outs while: supplies, last and valid at participating authorized Miele dealers only Valid on purchases from July 1 tu September 30 2007 CENTRE DE DISTRIBUTION D'ÉLECTROMÉNAGERS cessor: ALAR DHPUIS 10686 514.482.0007 EXT 201 5400, BOULEVARD DÉCARIE WWW.ALMARAPPLIANCE COM ENERGY STAR guatitmed CHIE Wadhwa CATR V4 (Meet, 3) NC ge ire Anviking do is à compromise 11348507 Westmount @ 1933-6781 w pS.RE/MAX WESTMOUNT INC.K = § ZOOT ‘ET ISNBNY {epsiny] Jauluex3y Junowsam yl 5673 Monkland N.D.G.1482-3347 WON IAUTUIEXIUTIOUIIS AM MMM Spe NR CENERAL STORE â 1 FIRE DEPT.IN Dear Residents Westmount is a residential community which has the added benefit of having a vibrant commercial sector where we can walk to local stores and shop ) close to home.Whether our stores and businesses are owner managed by fellow residents or by others who have chosen to establish themselves in Westmount, they are part of the fabric of our community. We will continue to welcome the vitality which a healthy local business sector provides.Patronizing these stores and companies helps to ensure their success and continued presence in Westmount. As one who often walks to the Victoria Village or the Greene and St.Catherine area, | enjoy the quality of products and services available and the experience of knowing the local merchants which is part of living in a customer always ca small city.I And since we're all And so, it is with pride that | salute our Westmount businesses and wish .them continued success in the future.other.Come ON IN € Karin Marks Mayor of Westmount When you shop log courteous people time.People who People who still be er A ROYAL LEPAGE EE HERITAGE Chartered Real Estate Broker SERVING WESTMOUNT SINCE 1910 David Mellor Diane Ménard Owner Branch Manager 4 Westmount Square #110 WESTMOUNT 514-934-1818 SERVING THE WESTMOUNT COMMUNITY SINCE 1911 We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities Plus de vie a la vie des jeunes, des familles et de la communauté YMCA 4585 Sherbrooke W.514-931-8046 Westmount Florist MY THE PICKRELL FAMILY SERVING WESTMOUNT SINCE 1962 360 Victoria 6 Thursday, August 23,2007 The Westmount Examiner www.westmountexaminer.com 488-9121 .GOING INTO OUR 88TH YEAR SLRVING WESTMOUNT SINCE 1920 CHEZ NICK 1377 Greene Ave.Westmount 935-0946 THE ROOFING SPECIALIST _ NORMAN « COLLIE DEPUIS SINCE 1928 Roofing contractor Residential * Commercial * Industrial “erving Westmoun” since 1928 514-595-8648 Licence RBQ 1117-5692-81 000165 ASSURANCES FORT INSURANCE Serving Westmount since 1962 Place Alexis Nihon 3400 de Maisonneuve Blvd, W.#1115 Montreal H3Z 3B8 Tel.: (514) 481-0481 Fax: (514) 481-0085 WILLIAMS & ESBER INC.INSURANCE BROKERS AUTO - HOME - LIFE - COMMERGIAL Serving Westmount Since 1962 Please call for a quotation! Recycling — I hope we can find a solution to commercial recycling during the mandate. We are surrounded by the Big City which does not offer the service — it has to be done by contractors.'m puzzled why the government does not require the SAQ to do what the beer and pop industries have to do — charge a fee for the containers so that it is profitable to take them back.Website — To have city site full of up-to- date information about all aspects of the council and the community would be a real legacy. There should be access to the council's background information. The site could, and should, be constantly improved.Finances — We began in a big hole.It is not OPINION my dossier but the debt with the interest payments must be at least $50 million.Getting back to pay-as-you-go will be an amazing accomplishment.Current finances are sound; we are within budget and anticipated revenue.Big Montreal — Finally, I hope we can establish harmonious relationships with Montreal and the Agglom. But working the Marianopolis move with Marcel Tremblay proved that cooperation is possible and worthwhile. It also confirmed to me that small is beautiful. It is different for us; no councillor lives more than 20 minutes’ walk from City Hall. When you walk to work, you see the problems close up.» Community activist Don Wedge can be reached at calert@web.net.His columns are archived at www.westmountexaminer.com, go to Opinion.ÉCOLE ST-GEORGES bé MONTRÉAL ST.GEORGES SCHOOL CH MONIREAI (7335) hd St.George's School is presently seeking host families for International students for the 2007-2008 academic year.Host families would be required to provide room & board in a safe, caring & nurturing environment.Compensation would be provided for families. All interested families, please call our Admissions, International Program at 514-937-9289 ext.235.1999859 NCJ EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Margaret A.Jacobs 4920 de Maisonneuve Blvd.W., Suite 10, Westmount Qc H3Z INI Tel (514) 484-3548 Res (514) 481-4452 Fax (514) 484-6000 e-mail: mags@ncj.ca 1452403 BCE L'ILE (0 ; | 45 = ; : A nd LES (39 TEED x .La IE "ER Jo RER 5 A 2125 DT ORAN TE ] td | Gorgeous Westmount building.Enjoy completely renovated apartment, dark wood floors, wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances in kitchen, renovated bathrooms, large master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, large windows, air conditioning, balcony, garage, storage, doorman, 24 hour concierge, stunning rooftop pool with breathtaking views, 2 or 3 bedrooms available, 1200-1400 square feet.$389,000-$489,000.Call for appointment.TATIANA LONDONO AFFILIATED REAL ESTATE AGENT | GROUPE SUTTON IMMOBILIA 514.912.3019 | www.tatianalondono.com 1919015 “An exemplary 1998169 Reach your potential at Centennial Academy education- LASALLE COLLEGE Fashion Design Apparel Production Management Fashion Marketing PT .: .Hotel Management | Computer Science Social Sciences Hotel Management Data Management | obal Vision Food Service Management 38 Network Management nternational Studies + Special Care Counselling Techniques + Early Childhood Education iques .* International Management Techniqu * Tourism Accounting & Management J i ent a .Business Manager Registration in progress!
