Somerville, Westmount A&6G-0F 8 A PUBLIC LIFE— FOR NOW aving been at the forefront in the H long but ultimately successful battle against Quebec's forced municipal mergers, former Westmount mayor Peter Trent has decided he will not be running for mayor of demerged Westmount in the next municipal election. In an exclusive interview with The Examiner prior to making a formal announcement last Monday, Trent looking fit and rested after a six-month sabbatical during which he granted no interviews explained how he arrived at his decision.“I set out to fight mergers to the finish and, then, | wanted to ensure demergers happened.” he said."It has been a long campaign, lasting almost a decade. My task is now done.If I staved on.it would he almost anti-climactic.” Asked what he planned to do from now on, Trent replied simply, “1 don't know.I always believed in closing one door before opening the other.” He admitted he wasn't going to find it casy being away from politics.“Politics is a drug and I've gone through the last six months of disintoxication,” he said, adding that the experience involved a mild form of withdrawal.Trent did not rule out the possibility of reentering politics once more in the future.Praising Westmount for its diversity and strong sense of community, Trent said he enjoyed collaborating with neighbours and fellow councillors on a wide range of issues, from zoning and heritage legislation to the restoration and expansion of the local library.(continued on page 3) Québec cl@ssées.com | 7 — æ = a E ds cé 2 does not rule out a return to 0 political life in the future (continued from page 1) “It has been an honour to serve on council and as mayor, but the city thankfully is on the verge of entering a new chapter in its history and it is time for others to pick up the baton,” he said On a regional scale, Trent said it will take years to repair the damage done to Quebec municipalities by both the PQ (with their forced mergers) and the Liberals (with their botched demergers).Predicting that another confrontation between Quebec and municipalities could be looming.Trent said a y leader was likely to emerge to ntually defend the cities’ interests as he did.“It's time for a new regional leader to take it from here, preferably a leader from a francophone city.” he said, Nonetheless, he expressed satisfaction in knowing that at least some Quebec cities will be regaining their independence.“Those former cities that are now permanently merged with the megaci- ty of Montreal will see their number of elected officials decrease, while the taxes increase, both owing to the inevitable uniformization of the size of boroughs and their allotments.” he said.“As I have stated from the outset.the megacity concept was firmly rooted in the past, and smaller cities are far better managed and responsive to their citizens.” Looking ahead.Trent maintained that unless the government sees the error of its ways, there will be constant pressure to remerge.“It is crucial that the reborn cities on the South Shore and on Montreal Island work together to combat this tendency,” he said.Trent said he hoped that in the future the provincial government would recognize the municipal level as a legitimate government in itself and begin to understand that urban regions in many ways have become more important than provinces or states.“Cities should not be treated as cash cows, nor be wiped off the map without their residents’ consent,” he said.Trent was first elected to Photo: Martin C.ig Peter Trent announces his decision not to run for another term as mayor of Westmount at a press conference in Victoria Hall on from 1994 to 1998 and was also vice-chairman of the Montreal Urban Community during that time.“À political career is like having an affair: any fool can start one.but to end it requires considerable skill.” he said at Monday's press conference in Victoria Hall.Friends, supporters and former political colleagues praised Trent for his many contributions while in office."I'm very proud to have been associated with Peter and to have worked with him for the 10 years that we were on council together.” said Borough Mayor Karin Marks.“I think this is another example of how he is not what everybody expects and he is really quite a remarkable man.He has provided Westmount with great leadership, and he's provided great leadership throughout the region and the island.” Borough Councillor Cynthia Lulham said she was saddened that Trent would no longer be playing a key role in Westmount’s political life.“I think, though, that we've been very library and of Victoria Hall, but also brought together the citizens to fight for their community.” Borough Councillor John de Castell.who served one term wiih Trent, which was cut short by the forced mer Ber.said the occasion was bittersweet.“Peter was, undoubtedly, our leader throughout the anti-merg- er movement and the demerger movement,” he said.“I would go as far as to say no Peter Trent, no demerger. It's sad to see the end of Peter's reign as mayor, so to speak. That said, I fully understand his rationale for not coming back.” Former mayor May Cutler said the smartest thing she ever did was to enlist Trent as her successor.“Even though then it was to build the library, I feel 1 had a certain prescience that something dire might happen that only you could solve,” she said to him.“1 hope.Peter, that even though we'd have loved to have kept you forever, that you won't leave politics- because you're the kind that gives politics a good name, and God knows it needs it.” Westimount Borough Director Bruce St.Louis, who served as the City of Westmount’s director-general during much of Trent's mayoralty, said he was not completely surprised by the decision, although he accepted it.“He has certainly laid out the groundwork for the next council in terms of the work that's cut out for them and the safeguards that they have to look at.” St.Louis said.“On a personal note, 1 absolutely respect his decision and I can only wish him all the very best for what is about to come. And even he doesn’t know In spite of the fact that the Liberals tried to stop us from demerging, we got our city back! And in spite of Mayor Tremblay’s misinformation, we got our city back!” Little did anyone know at the time, but that triumphant scene in Westmount City Hall, minutes Wayne Larsen w after the demerger referen- e-mail: larsenw@transcontinental.ca dum results were announced, would be Trent’s last few minutes in public life- -at least for the foreseeable future. As it turned out, it was a fitting climax not only to a long and hard-fought demerger campaign, but also to an 18-year ca cer in Westmount politics that began when he was elected alderman in 1983 and ended—against his will—in 2001 when the creation of the Montreal megacity cut short his third term as mayor. The recent announcement that Mr.Trent will not be running for the mayoralty of Westmount this coming November no doubt caine as a great surprise to many lt was generally assumed that, after leading Westmount back out of its forced merger with the Montreal megacity, he .would immediately turn his attention toward regaining his former job as mayor. After all, his four-year obligation to citizens, which began with the municipal election of 1999, had never been fulfilled; it had been cut short by Bill 170 and he is the kind of man who honours his commitments.True enough, but it must be pointed out that his tireless efforts in spearheading the local demerger campaign- not to mention serving as a major figure in the province-wide political battle—turned out to be a full-time occupation that was carried out on his own time and on his own tab, and exceeded by far what would have been his third term as mayor. In short, Mr.Trent's service to his community went well beyond the call of duty, and now he has decided to take a breather. But don't count him out completely. If history has taught us anything, just about anything is possible when it comes to politics—God knows.especially in Quebec.Mr.Trent may have bowed out of public life for the time being, but no one can predict what the future will bring. There is no shortage of speculation that he may eventually decide to pursue a political career at the federal level. He may even toss his hat into the mayoral ring once again in four years’ time.Whatever happens is anyone's guess. In the end.no one can blame him for arriving at this decision. The entire megacity saga has been long and sordid, strewn with countless plot twists and emotional confrontations. The many political obstacles along the way have been one thing, but it must have been downright painful to deal on a daily basis with fellow mayors who kept jumping from one side to the other in a shameless, pathetic attempt to save their jobs, as well as the stubborn refusal of the French-language media to give up.that hilariously outdated concept of Westmount as an English- only enclave where silk ascots are de rigueur and four o'clock tea is a sacred rite.Peter Trent's efforts on behalf of his community have been nothing short of remarkable.Words like integrity, courage and fortitude easily spring to mind.but it must be remembered that this is anything but an obituary. As he pointed out prior to Monday's press conference, he was saying au revoir and not adieu.Sancton tribute was appreciated To the editor: On behalf of the Sancton family, I would like to thank you and the staff of The Examiner for the very fine tribute you paid to John Sancton in your issue of Jan.13, following his death on Dec.28.During his more than 30 years as publisher of The Examiner, he obviously felt very strongly about the power of the paper to shape the community in positive ways.Your coverage reflected this, and 1 believe he would have been very proud to see your fine tributes. Thanks again to all involved.I would like to remind the community that a public celebration of the life of John Sancton will be held this Sunday afternoon.Feb.6.at 2:30 p.m.at Victoria Hall. The family looks forward to seeing friends and others whose lives he touched.Don Sancton Beaconsfield Trent needed at provincial level To the editor: Though the reasons for the departure of Peter Trent from Westmount municipal politics were explained to us, it is indeed regrettable that we will lose his services. He was a city councillor for eight years and then his term of mayor was abruptly ended after ten years by the PQ government of Quebec in a most arbitrary way.His administration was responsible for upgrading Victoria Hall, the library, the Lawn Bowling Club and the greenhouse, among many other achievements to improve life in Westmount. As he stated in his remarks to the room crowded with the media and local supporters, he feels the Liberal government acted in a shameful way with the demerger voting processes.Yet despite these obstacles.Westmount and many other former municipalities were successful. The problem now being faced by us, is which party should get our vote in the next provincial election.Certainly not the Liberals after the shabby way they have acted—not the separatist Parti Québecois or the pseudo-separatist ADQ.What is needed is a new provincial party and Peter Trent would be the ideal man to head it.He would have the support of the demerged municipalities, as well as those which narrowly missed the mark in the undemocratic voting procedures. This is apart from the general Quebec @ lation, whose opinion of the Charest government is at a low point after their waffling on many issues, but do not want Quebec to separate.Stanley Baker De Maisonneuve Boul.wv 2 3 ~ Da) [al S 3 c L © u x 8 © pas 3 £ = a he MIND Tommy Schnurmacher ou remember Jean Chrétien?Ye the former prime minister who is as Machiavellian and shrewd now as he ever was.Currently he's in the midst of having the Gomery inquiry for breakfast. No matter what happens from here on in.Chrétien's got it made in the shade.Justice John Gomery may be the most respected jurist this side of Clarence Darrow, but it matters not one whit.Poor Justice Gomery decided to shoot the breeze with a few reporters while the inquiry was still going on.Big mistake. That's all it took for eagle-eyed Chrétien to set up a multi-pronged campaign. Not being a particularly shy individual, he went for the jugular—dis- credit the whole shebang. If Chrétien and his legal beagles cannot get Gomery to heave himself overboard.they'll enlist the Federal Court to do the job for them.Whether the entire inquiry falls apart or not, its vaunted credibility is already in tatters.According to the accepted wisdom, the voting public will be enraged if the inquiry is torpedoed and take out its anger on the Liberals. That may be the accepted wisdom, but it's wisdom not worth accepting.First of all, the general public is bored of it all. They already know that Liberal higher-ups were fully responsible for the sponsorship scandal, but they don't particularly care anymore. They're planning to vote Liberal OS for all occasions anyway, since most are hardly likely to re-discover Conservative leader Stephen Harper who has now decided to bet the farm on his opposition to same-sex marriage.Let's play ‘Let’s Say”.Let's say that the public does get angry at the imminent demise of the Gomery commission.Let's say they get angry enough to punish the Liberals.Wouldn't that upset Chretien?Hardly.Chrétien may have been quiet for the last few months, but don't think for a moment that he hasn't been paying close attention.Don't think for a moment that he’s still not smarting from the shabby treatment he received at the hands of the party. Now that he is out of public life, what is that really animates Jean Chrétien?Other than his wife Aline.what's his current passion? It’s not money. He's raking that in by the millions setting up deals for Canadian business in Russia and elsewhere. It's not political accomplishment. He already has that under his belt having won three successive landslide victories.Chrétien and his supporters intensity of a one-activitv camp.We recommend a general camp for a child's first sleepaway experience.General camps are more nurturing and spend time helping children to adjust to being away from home. They also offer children exposure to a variety of activities, which often generates new interests for a child.Specialty camps are there to instruct and provide intensive skill development and (in che lower end of the spectrum.Examine all the factors, not just price.Myth #6 - "My child must attend camp with a friend.” Fact: This may aid in the process of getting the child to go to camp, but once the children are there, it typically does more harm than good.Friends that go to camp together often stick together, alienating themselves from the group and preventing a very important aspect of camp from taking place: making new friends.Occasionally the more independent child will begin making friends.leaving the other child feeling abandoned and betrayed.resulting in a strained camp experience—and a broken friendship.Myth #7 - "My child is too young or not ready for camp.” Fact: Frequently, the parent is really expressing that they are not ready for the child to Over the past 2 years, a record number of children (over 6 million each summer) have attended camp.Demand has outgrown supply. Many families have ended up on waiting lists that never opened up.The slowing economy is not expected to have much of an effect on the growing demand for summer camp.Families should begin their camp selection process as early as possible. The peak months for camp enrollment are December through March. Some great camps are still available in the spring, but it’s a risky game of hit and miss.(continued on page 10) Canoe-tripping Nature programs Rock climbing DR Leadership Developmen Kayaking Swimming Sports _ 30% X Creative Arts : } …and more! vus QE + aL a m8 * CHAMPIONS DAY CAMP AND TEDDY BEAR CAMP GIRLS AND BOYS 3-14 SINCE 1979 CHAMPIONS HAS OFFERED MORE SPORTS AND SUMMER ADVENTURES FOR CAMPERS TO ENJOY THAN ANY OTHER CAMP AROUND.— DAILY RED CROSS SWIMMING INSTRUCTION, EXCITING SPORT CAMPS, ART, DISCOVERY AND EXPLORATION, DESTINATION HOLLYWOOD, ANIMAL KINGDOM, WATERWORLD, ICE HOCKEY & FIGURE SKATING.TEL.739-3721 - 739-3423 www.championsdaycamp.com ON THE SECLUDED ACRES OF COLLEGE NOTRE-DAME ADJACENT TO WESTMOUNT, MOUNT-ROYAL, ion HAMPSTEAD AND OUTREMONT — We build strong Kids, strong families, strong communities JON Tourisme ill Québec 6 bry - S007 ¢ upmaay epsinUL - YINIVYXI INNOINLSTW IHL Page 10 - THE WESTMOUNT EXAMINER - Thursday, February 3, 2005 (continued from page 9) Myth #10 - "Not every child is cut out for camp, so maybe camp is not for us.” Fact: While it is true that not every camp is right for every child, there is a camp out there where each child can thrive.Regardless of a child’s personality or nature, camp can afford them the chance to have fun, make new friends, develop skills and cultivate new interests. What's important is to understand the child’s style and interests and find a camp that meshes with those. For example, sending a child whose passion is performing arts to a competitive, sports-oriented camp would probably be a disappointment to all.Camps may sometimes try to be all things to all children, but take the time to really explore what each camp offers in the areas that interest your child. And keep in mind, siblings can be very different, so a camp that has been a success for one child may or may not be the perfect place for the child that follows.Parents should be prepared to discuss any of these or other concerns they have with the directors of the camps they are considering. When you feel that you have found one on the same wavelength, you can be comfortable and confident in making your camp decision.Participating in group activities, like swimming, can help young campers conquer homesickness."An exceptional experience for your ch child” R Residential Summer Riding Camp NH Residential Spring and Fall Week-end Camp Co-Ed, 8-17 yrs of age BILINGUAL CAMP 7 t - Beautiful site and facilities sus [4 SL QUEBEC - 350 acres T - 30 km south of Montreal - over 30 years experience H H - 40 School horses - 65 campers E O RS E - In-ground swimming pool - QCA, OCA, FEQ.accred.T Tol.(450) 826-3772 Information - 1183 rte.209, Ste.Clotilde, Quebec, JOL 1W0 WWH BONG SOAK QC CO Send your child to Redwood every day ; and get a hug every night!
