island-wide cards and standard systems for the libraries; a “Bill 101” to include us in a mega-moun- tain authority; the mega-union will decide who does or doesn’t work here. The Westmount Municipal Association is asking Westmounters to its meeting tomorrow evening (Friday, May 31) at Victoria Hall to bring their own brickbats and bouquets.“We want to have some fun despite the situation,” said WMA president Kathleen Duncan.“There’s certain to be some gallows humour. We’ll provide some wine and cheese to help it along.” As a preview, the WMA collected the thoughts of some prominent Westmounters. Here's a sampling: Peter Trent, mayor-in exile, assesses the situation with tongue firmly in-cheek: FEARS: - The PQ is re-elected.The mega-city proves so ungovernable and profligate that the government forces the annexation of the North and South shores. It is quickly dubbed the giga-city Four years later, the ADQ is elected on a platform of “one province, one city.” - The ‘scandals’ of Team Tremblay become so frequent that the media have to start numbering them.Mega-city opponents can get worked up into a lather just at the recitation of a series of numbers.- Another of Tremblay’s councillors is investigated for corruption. He is promptly made ambassador to Trois Riviéres.- Under pressure from real estate agents, a new borough is created. It is called Westmount Adjacent.HOPES: - The Liberals are elected.Charest honours his word.Quebecers finally have a say in municipal restructuring.Westmounters can vote on the restoration of their city.- Soon we will see the end of monster houses in Westmount, monster cities in Quebec, and monster egos in Ottawa.(The latter is truly a vain hope.) - Bourque moves to China, where he finds his brand of democracy is much admired by the ruling elite.Doug McDougall, WMA past president, sugars some bitter pills: BOUQUETS: - Gerald Tremblay, with his many Ups and Downs politically and emotionally, must appreciate inheriting our undulating sidewalks. He’ll probably protect this Westmount tradition.- The rest of Montreal knows they are deprived of ade- * Heart Disease * Poor circulation e Chelation Therapy Now closer than ever in Cornwall, Ontario YOU DO HAVE A NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OPTION FOR: * Blocked Arteries * Alzheimer’s quate speed bumps and secretly covet Westmount’s, so maybe they'll steal some (or even all!) of ours.- Firemen speak of many more men arriving on the first alarm. That must be safer—but not if, on the way, they have to ask directions! BRICKBATS: - Increasingly we seem to have the attitude that we are different. Is it a siege mentality leading to building more walls than bridges? This is dividing people on the island, but the real problem is not people but politics and structure.- To lose our exemplary security unit would be a step backward. It could happen because differences cannot be tolerated in the mega-city and the PSO will be caught in the mega-net.- Increased use of the library is good long as we manage it.More mover) more life, more stimuli would follow. To become a branch of a centrally run Montreal mega library is a big concern. Therefore, let's not fight over numbers while losing the battle with the central bureaucrats.- Summit Park has character-defining features.Integration with Mount Royal into a common park is a big risk. How different are the uses and the traffic they attract. We should have been more stringent in the past and not allowed some of the construction to infringe and encroach.- The new cadre of councillors is better paid, some outrageously so.What a great lead into negotiations with the unions, many of whom have had a decade dominated by freezes and restrictions.Did someone say “Higher costs and reduced services?” (continued on page 5) 1-888-674-9765 Millennium Health Centre 120 Second St.W., Cornwall, Ont., K6J 1G5 www.millenniumhealthcentre.com [TAXI ATLAS 485-8585 Airport reservations 100% Guaranteed or your trip is free*!!! This was one of the many xciting family-oriented activities that took place at the 27th annual Family Day last Saturday in Westmount Park.“David made a great throw,” Smith said.“I was so happy that we were able to win together.” Smith and hundreds of other Westmounters took advantage of the most enjoyable day that the borough has to offer.Residents Martin C.Barry got out into the fresh air and spent quality time with their families. It’s a tradition in Westmount unlike any other: “Family Day started in 1970 by Westmount’s Director of Parks and Recreation John Garland,” said David Lapointe of the borough’s Sports and Recreation Department.“It was intended to get the community together and have fun in the park.” Since then, the Department of Sports and Recreation has continued to honour this day by organizing activities for everyone to enjoy.“For the most part, it's a status quo carnival,” Lapointe said.“It ranges from basic races, to an egg toss to La Ronde games.“(Family Day) has continued to be successful because it is something that people are familiar with.” This year was no exception. The festivities began at 9:30 a.m.with a parade from Winchester Avenue to Westmount Park.Upon the parade’s arrival, the games began with a series of traditional races on the West Field of the park.Isaac Aberson, the victor of the six- to eight-year-old boys’ 50-yard dash, admitted that he couldn’t have won without the support of his father, David.“I liked that he cheered for me,” Isaac said with a smile. On the East Field, William Rosenberg was training his seven-year-old son David to become the next great Montreal Expos first baseman.“Being a resident of Westmount, it's great to see the community come together,” Rosenberg said.“Carnivals, bouncy castles, lots of events and the time I get to spend with David are great.” Next to the main soccer field, children aged 10 years and under were lining up to enjoy a pony ride. While the kids were smiling as the ponies carried them around the designated area, nobody was as ecstatic as Victor Levee.“Family Day is great,” said Levee as he watched his daughters Anne-Sophie and Stephanie ride the ponies.“Being able to spend time with my daughters is the best.” “We like being with our dad,” agreed the younger Levees. As noon approached, many families sat down for a traditional picnic.Among them was borough councillor Cynthia Lulham as she, her family and her friends sat down for their annual lunch.“I never miss a Family Day,” Lulham said.“We especially never miss our little picnic by the pond.” (continued on page 6) Na’ Donald Pearson & Mel Alter Pharmaciens Préparateurs - Compounding Pharmacists OFFERING FULL PRESCRIPTION SERVICE AND NATURAL HEALTH SPECIALTIES * PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOUNDING Specially trained to create medications in various forms according to patient needs * BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT Natural alternatives to hormone replacement * CLINICAL NUTRITION Consultation available.* VETERINARY COMPOUNDING If you have problems with your pet's medication, we can help * PROBLEM-SOLVERS Our specialized services are too numerous to mention. Please call us for help with your medication problems.www.montrealpharmacy.com Helping physicians help patients with special needs Free Prescription Delivery Westmount Medical Building 5025 Sherbrooke West * 484-2222 A033 397 regmorden’s remax.net svlviel@ remax.net WESTMOUNT.Best location in Westmount, QUIET and central.Great entertainment residence, elegant and sunny.Pure Georgian architecture, exquisitely remodeled with all modern utilities for a sophisticated youthful living style.Fully enclosed, private flowered courtyard.A rare quality house.$3.490.000.WESTMOUNT.Mid level corner property - very bright with lovely views, 4 bdrs, oversized master bdrm with full picture window.Ground floor den, 6,000 sq.ft.garden, 2 car garage.$995,000.WESTMOUNT Adj.On St.Sulpice.Spacious, sunny mansion, 6 bdrms, high ceilings, lovely mouldings and details, fireplaces, 14,000 sq.ft.lot, large terrace, two garage.MINT CONDITION!
