around the streets of Montreal, Millaire never imagined that one day he would be one of only 165 Companions of the Order of Canada.Being promoted from Officer to Companion was an unexpected surprise for Millaire."I never dreamt of becoming a Companion,” he said this week."1 thought my career was slowing down.I never expected my peers to nominate me for something so special.” For 2001 o Page 6 - THE WESTMOUNT EXAMINER - www.westmountexaminer.com - Thursday, September 2 A great show of support from Westmount e stars and stripes have been appearing in windows of homes and businesses throughout Westmount as a show of support and sympathy for the American people. It would not be too bold to state that of all local municipalities Westmount has the closest and most numerous ties to New York City. With so many Westmounters working in the fields of finance, health care and the arts, many of us have friends and relatives there, as well as countless business associates and professional colleagues—not to mention the many transplanted New Yorkers currently living in Westmount, either permanently or temporarily. This brings the horrors of Sept.11 much closer to home, so it is therefore no surprise that in their effort to help in some way, Westmounters turned out in record numbers to donate blood at the fire station last Friday—despite bad weather and a longer than usual waiting period. And most knew there were no guarantees that their blood would be shipped south of the border; they did it because, as it has been repeated frequently in the media this past week, tragedy always brings out the best in people. Most of us have no doubt been frustrated by the fact that we can do very little to help victims of last week’s disaster, which is why we owe a tip of the hat to Westmount firefighters lan Ritchie, John Valiquet.James McAllister, Ryan Kiley and Michel Amesse, who volunteered to spend last weekend in New York. Not only did they lend their American colleagues a much-needed hand in a time of extreme crisis and grief, they represented this city well and deserve our sincere thanks. Our Strong Spirit of Unity I: is very difficult for me this week to write my Wayne Larsen column since it is inevitable to talk about the tragic events that occurred last week in New York, Washington D.C.and Pennsylvania.I would like to offer my sincere sympathy to the families of the victims. This tragedy was so close to Montreal that many of us may have known a friend or a family member that worked in the World Trade Centre or Pentagon, or even in the surrounding area. There can be no cause or grievance that could ever justify such unspeakable violence.Such an attack is an assault not only on the targets but an offence against the freedom and rights of all civilized nations.1 would like to recognize and thank all the volunteers and organizations from Westmount-Ville Marie that have helped in this tragic time, particularly for the safe haven and warm hospitality they have given to diverted American air travellers. As always, this time of crisis brought out the very best in our people. From prayer meetings and vigils to the countless numbers who lined up to give blood. From a flood of donations by individuals and businesses to patience in the face of delays and inconvenience. And we were all moved by the sight of Canadians opening up their hearts and their homes to thousands of confused and anxious air travellers who had no place to go.(continued on page 7) 210 Victoria Ave., CF [Administration Westmount (Québec) H3Z 2M4 (514) at least 2,000 people and blinding and maiming thousands of others, a swift response came from the United States and relief trains were on the way from New England as fast as they could be assembled.Nothing can match the horror of last week in Manhattan, but the reaction was the same: How can we help?Never were expressions of American gratitude greater in 1980 when it was learned that the Canadian embassy in Teheran had sheltered six American diplomats at great risk from raging Iranian mobs.I wrote in a letter to The Globe and Mail at that time: Canadians have a long history of sheltering Americans, dating back to the Revolutionary War when we took under our wings thousands of Loyalists, known to their fellow New Englanders as Tories.Benedict Arnold found sanctuary in Saint John.N.B.Less than a century later, we were harbouring young men from both North and South as the Civil War raged.Indeed Jefferson Davis, president of the defeated Confederacy.took refuge in Montreal.Uncle Tom found his way to Ontario.Sitting Bull moved to Canada after his encounter with General Custer in 1876.: Gordon Brewerton ext.27 Classified Ads : Wayne Larsen ext 32 Helping hands across the border The shoe has been on the other foot, though.Louis- Joseph Papineau fled to the United States after the rebellion of 1837.as did William Lyon Mackenzie.whose daughter.the mother of William Lyon Mackenzie King, one of Canada’s longest serving prime ministers, was born in exile. Then there was the tragic Louis Riel, who was hanged later after returning from exile in the United States to lead his people in the Saskatchewan rebellion. It wasn't too many years ago when young Americans found shelter here as the war in Vietnam tore at their conscience and took a cruel toll of their friends and comrades. On these occasions, however, there was considerable enmity on both sides of the border Americans have actually invaded Canada twice, capturing Montreal in 1775—a year before the Declaration of Independence. This glimpse of history shows us how far we have come together. The enormous outpouring of gratitude on one side and pride on the other in recent should serve to prove that no two nations on earth 3.closer today than Canada and the United States. We are brothers.Edward W.Barrett Kensington Avenue Hebdos Transcontinental / Western Montreal
