DECEMBER REAL ESTATE SALES CELEBRATING WESTMOUNT'S VOLUNTEERS Marilynn Vanderstay embers and guests of the Westmount Historical Association’s first meeting of its spring lecture series, entitled ‘Westmount Schools’, were treated to a walk down memory lane recently at The Study.Presented in the Eve Marshall Library, the history of the school was eloquently narrated by past headmistress Eve Marshall and former student Barbara Whitley.Using a chronicled slide presentation that spanned a history not only of the school but also most of the 20th century, the two gave an insightful overview of the school from both perspectives. The Study was founded 85 years ago by Margaret Gascoigne in response to her intense dislike of the traditional school system of heavy books and boring subjects. The former governess from England had a vision instead for a school where “girls would be happy and learn things that really matter” Those words would become both the mandate and the theme for The Study. The school began informally in a bed-sitting room on Drummond Street after the parents of six girls asked Gascoigne to school their daughters. As a teacher, Gascoigne had two goals—to train the girls in concentration and to develop a taste for literature, music and art. Those goals are still paramount in the mandate of The Study today.By 1917 the school expanded and had to move its location to larger quarters on Sherbrooke Street near Guy.At this location the school started to establish its unique identity.Generally known as ‘Miss Gascoigne's School’ or ‘Gassies’.the school took on Gascoigne’'s preferred name. The Study. The trillium became the school flower.and the prefects established four student houses named for Greek letters. The school system itself was innovative for its time.As well as the better students, all students were recognized for effort and improvement, as well as achievement.Students were never told they had no talent. There was a ‘fluidity’ of timetable and curriculum that is still in effect today. There were five teachers at this location, including Beaver Hall artist Ethel Seath who taught art for 45 years until she was 83 years old.In 1921 the school had outgrown its facilities once again and moved up the street to the Ewing House on Cote des Neiges.Whitley has fond memories of the era.“It was the days of the Flappers,” she said, “and we used to be defiant to the uniform rules, hiking up and pulling our coats tight around our hips and leaving our boots unbuttoned, flapping open when we walked—hence the word ‘flappers’.” During the Depression years, the school had to lay off some teachers.Since there was no provision for pensions, one of the teachers, Isabelle Barclay, started the ‘Turn Around Shop’ on Victoria Avenue. The proceeds from the sales of used uniforms and skates were the basis for the pension plan.and the store eventually became the present Junior League store.WHA OPENS SPRING LECTURE SERIES Photo Doreen Undsd ) ; Barbara Whitley left) and Eve Marshall at The Study during the WHA's March 29 lecture.Due to increased traffic on the street, and again outgrowing its facilities, in 1969 The Study moved to its present location on The Boulevard.Originally built in 1911, the house was acquired in the 1930s by the Bank of Montreal. When The Study moved in, the building was remodeled first for safety and later to be updated both architecturally and in technology. The 1990s saw the addition of a new arts and science pavilion, a green house, a computer lab and a music room. The students designed the stained glass windows in the gymnasium.Much of what takes place today in The Study is student driven. The program for ‘Sharing the Challenge’, an international conference hosted by The Study in 1990, was planned by the students and included a focus on human rights and a talk by past mayor May Cutler. That program fulfilled Gascoigne's dream of a school ‘where girls would be happy and would learn things that really matter RENTAL BOARD SLOW TO HELP WMA WORKSHOP relations between landlords and tenants will be explored in a workshop being held by the Westmount Municipal Association in the Bowling Green Pavilion next Thursday, April 19.The Rental Board has promised to send a spokesperson—Dbut only after a desperate visit to its offices in east-end Montreal by a frustrated WMA organizer.Confirmed guest speakers include Ted Wright, coordinator of the Wednesday afternoon legal clinic at the Westmount Y and a frequent broadcaster on rental issues.“We were anxious for someone from the Régie de logement— the government's rental agency—to join us, but that wasn’t easy,” said Stanley Baker, one of the WMA's meeting organizers.“My efforts to reach them were met with a busy message and I atest information on new rents and the Esti Jedeikin an invitation to call back! Or a voice machine that keeps me on hold for more than half-an-hour waiting to speak to a human being.” Frustrated, Baker travelled to the board’s offices in the Olympic Village this week to issue a personal invitation, which was welcomed. He now awaits confirmation. The workshop is being planned by the WMA on the lines of the successful workshop on the new valuation roll staged for homeowners in February.“With so many Westmounters and WMA members being tenants, it is important that their concerns and their landlords be known,” said WMA president Kathleen Duncan.“Every week, the WMA gets calls for help, usually from tenants frustrated at the lack of response from the authorities. If you are elderly, handicapped or even a busy parent, it’s not easy to contact the rental board,” she added.“We want this meeting to help.” Buying or selling a home?Call the duo that does it best 933-6781 REMIX" RE/MAX WESTMOUNT INC.od Chartered Reol Estate Broker.Indepand owned an Wright will present some guidelines for tenants facing rent increases.“The rental board is suggesting a 0.7 per cent basic raise for people who pay their own heat,” he said.“It could be more depending on the fuel used: 0.9 per cent for electricity, 2.1 (gas) and 4.8 (oil).Landlords can ask for more based on improvements and possible property tax increases, but they have to be able to prove those amounts.” Montreal landlord groups have begun a new initiative to have the government change the law to allow uncontrolled increases.Wright will discuss these and other issues.Baker has also invited the Association of Apartment Owners to send a representative. The workshop begins at 7.30 p.m., is free and open to all.The Bowling Green Pavilion is at 401 Kensington, next to City Hall. For more information, contact Stanley Baker at 931-8690.Lucette Hivon 40003344 100Z ‘ZI judy ‘Aepsiny] - WO JBUILIBXIIUNOWISIM MMM - ¥ININYXI INNOWLSIM IHL € abeq - LT LOCAL NEWS CELEBRATING WESTMOUNT'S MANY VOLUNTEERS Barbara Moore e United Nations has declared I 2001 the International Year of Volunteers. We are told that there are 7.1 million volunteers in Canada, so members of Westmount's Healthy City Project decided to investigate and celebrate volunteering in our own community. What we discovered surprised and delighted us—there are thousands of volunteers in Westmount! Every senior school in Westmount, public and private, has a school community outreach program by which the students support various needs in the community and learn the concept of volunteering at the same time.Several of the elementary schools have imaginative pro- grams which we will discuss in more detail another time.Churches and synagogues have Meals on Wheels programs which take meals to shut-ins; they have programs for the elderly, for stroke victims and for other special needs.Contactivity has a roster of volunteers who will help the elderly by accompanying them to medical appointments and helping with their shopping. The Westmount YMCA and Centre Greene both depend heavily on volunteers to keep their programs going. Then there are all the Westmounters who volunteer to meet needs beyond our community boundaries—we can only imagine how many there must be.Over 800 people volunteer in ways that directly assist the City of Westmount. There are some 300 residents who helped The Rotary Club of Westmount is holding an Antique Show & Sale at the time of our anti-merger referendum in November and continue to act as telephone committees and in other ways to rally and inform people of events as they occur. The Healthy City project is composed of volunteers who keep an eye on environmental concerns as well as mutual support strategies to help people living in the community. The Westmount Municipal Association is at the centre of rallying volunteers as well as sponsoring community meetings on subjects of common concern, the most recent on property valuations. Then there is the Westmount Historical Association, which in recent years has gathered together information on the history of Westmount and compiled it in an orderly fashion The Westmount Horticultural Society holds informative talks, and the City’s Horticultural Advisory Committee organizes a plant exchange in the spring in conjunction with the City’s horticultural staff.Still more volunteers who directly sup port Westmount are the Westmount Dog Owners Association, which encourages responsible dog ownership through training and control of dogs, and observance of the Westmount bylaws, which include picking up after the dogs. Each spring members of the association, some years with the help of Scouts or others, help with the clean-up of Summit Park and the dog runs.In 1998 they raised $6,500, which was presented to Westimount to assist with the clean up of the mountain after the ice storm. The Westmount Public Library also has its own roster of volunteers.Visit their display in the Library during the last two weeks of April.During the course of a year, the Westmount Recreation Department benefits from the help of volunteer referees and coaches with some of their programs— estimated about 250 volunteers in all.Members of the St.John Ambulance, all volunteer, are on duty at Westmount community events to offer first aid if needed. The Civil Protection Unit is made up of 21 men and women (1999) who follow a weekly training program so as to be prepared to assist in Westmount in case of emergency. They all volunteer their time—3,442 hours in 1999—pay Westmount Arena, May 4-6.Over 60 quality dealers from Quebec and Ontario will present furniture, jewellery, glassware and collectibles for sale.We are planning a silent auction at the same time.We need auction quality items of furniture, artwork or collectibles and ask you to help with donations.100% of the funds raised will be used on local.national and international projects.as we have been doing for over 70 years. You can help The Rotary Club of Westmount help others.Contact us at 935-3344.We still pickup useable furniture & household items for the needy.SEE YOU THERE - REMEMBER THE DATES: ANTIQUES SHOW & SALE — MAY 5-6 — $5 WINE & CHEESE PREVIEW/SALE FRIDAY MAY 4, 6 PM — $35 essing Eo.Pic ENTREZ, COMPAREZ ET CONSTATEL: NOUS SOMMES LES #1 Membre du business bureau ne r Mise.a good beginning never ends Recent studies indicate that repeated exposure to early childhood music enhances the development for their own courses and uniforms. In 1998, for their outstanding service during the ice storm, they were awarded Quebec’s Mérite Municipal in the Municipal category.Watch for dis- of the brain.LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER ¢ Kindermusik Village (Birth - 18 mths), starts Wednesday April 18" at 11:15 am * Our Time (18 months - 3 yrs), starts Wednesday April 25" at 4 pm plays of volunteer projects throughout the year: The Healthy City Project salutes Westmount volunteers; City.A list of sales can be seen above.) modest list of real estate transfers—with equally modest prices—rounded out the year 2000 for Westmount, City Hall reports.Only seven one- and two- family dwellings changed hands during the month.for prices ranging from $322.000 to $535.000.Both the volume and the average price of $427.714 were the lowest since February.as was the average markup of 34 per cent above the 1995 municipal evaluation. Two other sales took place with no market value declared.probably for substantially higher prices than the rest.Highest price among declared values was the $535.000 reported value of 440 Lansdowne Avenue, though a very large house close by at 420-22 Lansdowne.which has been converted for multi- residential use.changed hands for $599.000.The lowest price was $322.000 for 70 Columbia Avenue.None of the properties sold for less than the 1995 municipal evaluation.the lowest markup taking place in the resale of 4345 Westmount Avenue which sold for only 8 per cent above its $450,700 valuation. The property had been taken over by Royal LePage Relocations for $492.500 in August and gained a market price of only $485.000.Highest markup involved the $367.000 sale of 4477 de Maisonneuve Boulevard.some 77 per cent above its $207.300 valuation. While December is usually an off month for signing deeds.the seven last vear is the lowest volume of home sales since 1994 and before that.1989 when the market was sustaining its previous peak. This time.the low volume of one- and two-family dwellings was matched by only one condominium sale for December, and no commercial transfers. The December sales registrations involve negotiations which took place late in the year, mainly during October and November, with fast signing dates for whatever reason.A review of the entire year's sales will appear in an upcoming issue of The Examiner.& Fe =r [3 Ghislaine Adeland \\- © -~.Albert Attara Nader Attara Edi Alain Boisv Alain Brosseau this is called insulin resistance. If periodontal disease is treated, studies have shown that the need for insulin is reduced. But, while research does show a connection between periodontal disease and other conditions such as heart disease or low birth eight babies, it is too soon to tell which is the chicken and which is the egg.Researchers are not sure whether one condition causes the other, or whether they occur together because of similar risk factors, or if there is another, undiscovered explanation. For example, a person SPONSORED BY THE FOLLOWING NEIGHBORHOOD DENTISTS who smokes is at increased risk of tooth loss due to gum disease, and, at the same time, at increased risk of heart disease.Because many aspects of health are inter-related, the "holistic" (whole person) approach to health care has been adopted by many medical practitioners. In this framework, all aspects of a person's health and well-being are examined together. The good news is, that just as many illnesses have similar risk fac- lors, there are many positive, preventive steps that are similar for dental and overall health.A properly balanced diet, with limited sugar.is an excellent starting point for overall health.Avoiding tobacco and excess alcohol is also key to general well-being.Prevention has long been the focus in dental care.By following a few simple steps, you can greatly reduce your risk of periodontal disease and cavities.Brush your teeth gently with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste recognized by the Canadian Dental Association at least once every day.How you brush is just as important as how often - you should use gentle circular motions and nol “scrub” your teeth since this can cause your gums to recede.Remember to floss every day. This is the one area that the majority of people miss, but it's a very important step.Try playing music or flossing while you watch TV whatever it takes to get the job done.Finally.visit your dentist regularly for professional care.Brushing, flossing and regular visits to the dentist are the key elements to achieving and maintaining good oral health - which is vital on its own.And.if good oral health helps you to avoid more serious health problems down the road, you've gotten a terrific bonus. It really is a win-win situation. Some facts about oral cancer. Most dentists today routinely check their patients for signs of oral cancer. These signs show up most often on the tongue, the floor of the mouth, the lips and gums and the soft palate tissues in the back of the tongue.Early detection Is key to successful treatment.According to recent statistics from the National Cancer Institute of Canada, in 1999 oral cancer accounted for 2,200 new cancer cases among men and 990 among women.Anyone can get oral cancer; however, it usually occurs in people over 45 years old.Oral cancer can be serious and even deadly, and since all the causes are not known, it is impossible to eliminate them all. However, known risk factors include smoking, use of alcohol, exposure to the sun and heredity. If you use any product which contains tobacco, like cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco (snuff), your risk of developing oral cancer is significantly increased. It is especially dangerous to combine smoking and alcohol.Avoiding smoking and alcohol (especially together) will reduce your risk.DR.DOUGLAS HAMILTON, pps.CARING, PROFESSIONAL AND PUNCTUAL SERVICE 937-3008 245 Victoria suite 620 | LE GROUPE Couture Wiseman Lorne A.Wiseman s.sc.0.0.5.Dip.Pério, FA.C.D.PERIODONTIST AND IMPLANT SPECIALIST g & 2222 boul.René Lévesque Quest, suite 200, Montréal Qc.H3H 1R6 (514) 937-3535 established since 1962 Excellence in dentistry -
