[" —2w — "> pe AVR SSIS pau Brief council meeting covers © three items By WAYNE LARSEN he City of Westmount took care : of some light housekeeping during a brief council meeting Tuesday afternoon. With only five councillors in attendance, Mayor Peter Trent dealt with a three-item agenda in a meeting that lasted less than 15 minutes. There was no question period since no other citizens were present. The first item was a $31,200 approval of purchase for 10,000 calendars commemorating Westmount’s 125th anniversary. The City plans to have these special 1999 calendars distributed free of charge to all Westmount homes in December.Councillor Karin Marks said that extra copies will be sold at a cost of $5 for those wishing to purchase them as Christmas gifts. These will be available at City Hall, the Westmount Public Library, and possibly the arena. The City will be paying for the calendars out of its 125th anniversary operating budget. The second item was the recommendation that the City reject all bids for the supply and installation of fibre optic cables for Westmount Light and Power.Councillor Nicolas Matossian noted that all eight bids were significantly above the City’s budget for the project, in some cases by as much as 40 per cent.A new tender will be called once modifications are made to the specifications. The third item was the drafting of a bylaw allowing the City to defer the date of the January city council meeting to Monday, January 11, since the holiday schedule makes it difficult to prepare for a Monday, January 4 meeting. The Westmount o Examiner Westmount, Que., Canada, Thursday, November 2 BY WAYNE LARSEN ucicn Bouchard and Jean | Charest were nowherc near Westmount last Thursday evening, but they were certainly the centre of attention during the candidates meeting at Roslyn School. No local issues were discussed, and aside from a few brief, lively exchanges between candidates and members of the audience, the meeting lacked much of the bite normally associated with Quebec politics.Still, organizers agreed that the evening was a complete success because it gave morc than 150 voters in attendance an opportunity to connect a face and policy with the names that will appear on their ballot next Monday.“I think it went very well,” said Stanley Baker of the Westmount Municipal Association (WMA), which co-sponsored the cvent with The Examiner.“lt was much more interesting than the televised debate between the three party leaders. The questions were all very intelligent, the responses were amimated, and there was quite a bit of humour.” Incumbent Liberal Member of the National Assembly Jacques Chagnon (right) led a field of seven candidates at the Photo Cliff Skarstedt debate.Others participating were (left to right) Christian Armour, Sorem Kvist, Allen Faguy and Christy McCormick.Moderated by Victor Drury, endum, linguistic rights, health chicf cxccutive officer of the care and education. With the exception of Louis sentiment throughout the room Foundation For Research into Children's Discases, the meeting Lang of the Marxist-Leninist remained focussed on the same Party, who was unable to attend, But some were instantly overwhelmed by the federalist and subsequently ignored by questioners throughout the general issues that will decide the candidates arrived ready to evening.November 30 clection—a refer- present their platform.(See If we, page 3) Master Corporal Brigitte Ledines, 15, and Master Corporal Melissa Amram, 17, of the Westmount Cadets.Westmount Cadets win provincial award BY NATALIE DARBYSON Wine der have even more reason to brag about their city now that the local Army Cadet Corps has been rated the most efficient cadet corps in Quebec. The CC 2862 RMR (Cadet Corps 2862 affiliated with the Royal Montreal Regiment) beat out 67 others corps to win top prize.Captain R.S.Boicel, Commanding Officer of the Corps, credits the award to “good staff, excellent parents.and very motivated cadets. It’s amazing what theyre capable of.” According to Boicel, the aim of the Army Cadet movement is to promote good citizenship and physical fitness as well as an interest in the armed forces.Furthermore, the Corps gives youths the chance to do things “other kids would never have the opportunity to do.” The Corps consists of about 40 cadets aged 12 to 18, who meet Friday evenings and participate in such activities as movement (drill), orienteering, band music, teaching methods, sports, public speaking, ficldcrafi, sport shooting and travel, There 1s no cost for the teens to participate. Many of the activities help cadets gain experience for the outside world. For instance, to obtain a rank within the Corps, a cadet must submit a sort of job application as well as pass an interview-an exercise which helps prepare them for the job market.Boicel stressed the importance of the Cadets’ contribution to the community at large, such as helping to clean up Camp Amy Molson, clearing the streets during last winters ice storm and holding a food drive for the needy. The Corps will also be participating in the Westmount Santa Claus Parade on Dec.6.When asked what their favourite part of Cadets was, many answered that they enjoyed going on FTXs (Field Training Exercises such as camping and ficldcraft.) However, they also emphasized that they were lcarning valuable lessons such as the importance of discipline and leadership skills.(See Cadets, puge 8) décore Marie -paulée:: CHARU/MA » by Sresteress Hand Buy One Set at Sale Price and Get the Second at 1/2 of Wash Leaders in Second set 512.49 $8.99 | $3.99 : Sale price $24.99 $17.99 $7.99 November | - 30) 4918 Sherbrooke St.W., Westmount 486-7305 1090 Laurier West, Outremont 273-8889 2 - Thursday, November 26, 1998 Incumbent Liberal MNA Jacques Chagnon looks to win again By WAYNE LARSEN -Still locked in what he describes as a bitter fight, Westmount-St.Louis incumbent Liberal candidate Jacques Chagnon is looking forward to next Tuesday, when it will all be over.(514) 521-sida INS TIL UT ychi ° Eo gocarwon Workers Psychgiégists # pnologist Sexofbdist - i + Farñily Medicine Psychotherapist,
