trains, councillor suggests _ i The truck stops here This truck created its own stop on Greene Avenue last Wednesday afternoon after its cabin got stuck under the bridge.MUC police closed off northbound traffic for several hours while they figured out how to free the truck.Bystanders who said such incidents happen often wondered how much longer the old bridge was going to last. The truck was eventually freed.By BERNIE O'NEILL The Examiner A Westmount city councillor wants speeding trains to be put under the radar gun to find out just how fast they're going.Councillor John Lehnert, who lives on Lewis Avenue near the CP tracks, agreed with a resident of 4700 St.Catherine St.who told councillors this week that certain trains are going too fast and disturbing the peace for residents in his building.“The trains are running faster and the vibrations are getting worse,” said Lehnert, who has also been an advocate of a plan to build a sound barrier to block traffic noise from the nearby Ville Marie Expressway.Lehnert said one train, which passes at about 7:20 a.m., goes through “at an incredible speed.” Another train at around 10 p.m.also seems to be speeding.“This might just be some cowboys who are doing this without permission,” Lehnert said.“Particularly when they are empty they seem to go at ridiculous speeds.” Lehnert said hc has asked Public Security director Richard McEnroe about getting a radar gun to “get some proof” as to how fast the trains are travelling.HONESTY, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE Thinking of buying No.36 Thursday, Sept.7, 1995 rom Sept.5 to 10 the province is enu- prés for a permanent voters list and a fall referendum. If they haven't already done so, one Liberal and one PQ booster should be knocking on your door today, tomorrow, Saturday or Sunday.Apart from the obvious importance of being on the voters list for the referendum, what is notable for Westmounters in all this is that in areas where a municipal vote is coming up (Westmount is one of them) the enumeration will also be the basis for the local voters list, with the city clerk’s office in each city or town using its own data to fill in the blanks later on.Let's hope they don't have too many blanks to fill in.A resident called THE EXAMINER on Tuesday to say she had just been enumerated and the enumerators had, for whatever reason, failed to complete the lower part of the form, Sections B through E, part of which dealt with the municipal election — specifically Section B asking whether she had been domiciled in the municipality for at least a year, a prerequisite for voting in the Nov.5 Westmount elections. To her credit the caller noticed the oversight and chased after the enumerators, getting them to fill in the lower sections. While it is only one report, one has to wonder how many others are not being asked the complete set of questions, and how this will affect the quality of the list provided to Westmount city hall, which will then have to fill in the holes using its own lists of local residents. The point here is that, to avoid hassles later on, you might want to make sure the enumerators fill in all sections of your enumeration slip.It has already been stated in this space why the city should have done its own enumeration instead of using the province's.In its defence, the city has said it was afraid a visit by two sets of enumerators, one provincial, one municipal, in the span of a couple of weeks would cause confusion. They might be right. Also, it appears using the provincial list will save local taxpayers about $20,000.Nevertheless, there are drawbacks.Using the province's list in a sense endorses the controversial practice of asking potential voters to produce ID, something that could be intimidating for new immigrants, who would then give up their right to vote. The aaa € ava enumerators can also secretly challenge your eligibility, another unsavory characteristic of the process being used to compile a so-called permanent voters list.An editorial in The Gazette on the weekend started with the assertion that everyone agrees having a permanent voters list is a good idea. But a permanent voters list may not be a particularly good idea if you are interested in keeping voter turnout as high as it is traditionally in Canada. An enumeration itself is part of the whole chemistry of an election (or referendum). For one thing, it lets people know there is an election going on.Beyond that, it gets people thinking, makes them take a look at the issues well before they cast their ballots. And while it may not sound like a glowing example of “democracy in action,” the enumeration may just be the thing that makes them cast their ballots — because they feel obliged.“They’ve taken the trouble to get me on the list.I'd better get down there and do my duty.” As happened in the recent PSBGM elections, without the enumeration, without that “invitation to participate,” people didn’t.With a “permanent” voters list there will be less participation in Quebec elections, provincial, municipal or school board, in the years to come.— Bernie O’Neill » I wish to join with my colleagues and the population served by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to notify you that I strongly September. The Saint-Henri-Westmount chapter of the Liberal Party of Canada’s Seniors’ Commission will be meeting on Sept.21 to discuss current issues that affect its members, such as social reforms, unemployment and the deficit. The LPC’ Seniors’ Commission, created for Party members aged 60 and up, represents and promotes seniors’ interests within the Party. At the chapter meeting, seniors will have the opportunity to voice their concerns and communicate their ideas to the PLC and the Government of Canada.Admission is open to LPC members and is free of charge.LPC memberships may be purchased on site, prior to the start of the meeting. The meeting will be held on Sept.21 at 8 p.m.at the Saint-Leon Church Hall, Westmount. The other two events organized by the Saint-Henri- Westmount Riding Association for the month of September are part of the LPC’ fundraising campaign.Every year, Mayor Peter Trent is not submitting a column because of the impending municipal election race. Our MP Lucienne Robillard says.the Association raises funds needed to support the various activities of the Liberal Party at the federal level. For example, funds raised by the LPC may be used to support the numerous activities and months of preparation that are part of an election campaign. The first Riding Association fundraiser that I am pleased to invite you to attend is a Cocktail Reception, which will be held on Sept.26 at 6 p.m.at the Montrez Badminton and Squash Club, 3505 Atwater Ave.My colleague, the Honorable Allan Rock, Minster of Justice and Attorney- General of Canada, will be the guest of honour at this fundraising reception. The second fundraiser that I would like to invite you to attend will take place on Sept.30 during Family Week. The Riding Association has organized a Spaghetti Dinner Dance, which will be held at 6:30 p.m.at the Saint Zotique Church Hall, 4561 Notre Dame Street West.1 look forward to seeing you at one or all of these events! In your June 19 editorial you stated that many residents have suggested that Westmount sports facilities are not adequate compared to those of neighbouring suburbs. One problem is that I don’t think that the right questions have been asked of our citizens regarding their recreation needs in general. The city spent $40,000 to do a study on recreation before the Library renovations were undertaken. The Oliver Mangione report gave us no concrete suggestions to improve recreation in Westmount and did not take into account how quickly our needs are changing.Contrary to the 1980s, more of our citizens have, out of necessity, increased their working hours, decreased their leisure time and have less discretionary income to allocate to leisure activi- QE counterproposal got cursory review Parking, although not ideal, is 100 per cent better than the major central city hospitals such as the Royal Victoria and the Montreal General.A proposal put forth to the Regie Regionale by management to combine (1) the location of the laboratory and radiology of services, (2) a new physicians locale to house all our physicians, (3) as well as the local CLSCs, would save our health care system millions of dollars from the Quebec budget and from our tax dollars.Such a proposal, in the final analysis, would be most convenient for our patients and our professionals and staff. This proposal seems to have been turned down after only a cursory review.Alan Hood, MD HAMPSTEAD City needs residents’ input on recreation ties.In the future, I think that when doing polls concerning recreation, the citizen has to be reminded what “receation” is and isn’t! Recreation is many things to many people and we all recreate in a variety of ways such as with drama, painting, games, hobbies, reading, writing, social events, spectating, or voluntary service. It is often a way for us to achieve a sense of achievement of per- sonai goals or positive feedback from others.Although sport is extremely beneficial and gratifying to some, not everyone is interested or able to be involved in sport or organized fitness activities. Now that we are assessing the future use of Victoria Hall, we need to reassess the needs of our citizens.Do we have enough space to offer opprtunities to recreate? Is there room for children and adult theatre, choir, sports, fitness, chess, creative writing, cooking?Do we have a place where people can congregate to play or simply talk?Do we provide the opportunity for people, young and old alike to share ideas, get feedback, “de-stress”?Will we have a place for a community kitchen? Can we be creative with what we do with the Westmount Train Station? We need to put in our own meaures to maintain and enhance well-being.One way to start is to realize the importance of all forms of recreation and to establish priorities. The bottom line is that we need a place for people to congregate, to communicate to de-stress and ultimately to re-create! When city council holds public meetings regarding Victoria Hall’s use, I hope that Westmounters will turn up in full force to give their input and help shape our local future.Kit Standish Finkelstein President "+ 0 “Westmount Municipal Association The Westmount Examiner, Thursday, Sept.7, 1995 - 7 CLSC HOTLINE.I youre having a heart attack press 1.16 ws a stoke PRESS 2.If you can't hear this Being a reluctant landlord to 500 wasps ver since a huge bee bit me on E: arm at age 5 — while | was playing croquet, of all things — | have been unduly afraid of bees, wasps, hornets, and anything else with a stinger {not to mention having a phobia toward croquet mallets and afternoon teas).Which is why | was so disturbed by how many wasps were bumbling their way into our humble home recently, maybe eight or ten an evening through one of our windows without a screen, only to be dispatched to the great beyond, after some chasing, with a rolled up Gazette travel section. The things seemed to be everywhere.Of course we figured there must be a nest nearby. It wasn’t until my wife stepped out onto the balcony one day that she saw them, hovering near a space on the outer wall, like a bunch of people waiting at a bank machine.Turns out the wasps are virtually living inside our house, which must be convenient for them as far as paying property taxes is concerned, but not for us.It’s no fun being landlord to 500 wasps, and | don’t mean White Anglo Saxon Protestants (who can be more fun than they're given credit for, and better tenants).Because the nest is inside the wall, they can’t simply cut it down.Another option is to evacuate the family for a spell and spray some sort of deadly insecticide in there.Option 3 is to wait till late fall (when they're all back at college), seal up the cracks and hope for better luck next year.Which is what we've decided to do for now.We bought some screens. In the meantime none of us have been bitten, yet, and only a couple of the more heroic or unlucky wasps get in a day.Which is not to say we are taking this situation lightly.Quite the contrary. In fact if there are any wasps reading this article, a word of advice: don’t hover around little children, unless you are cruising for a close encounter with a rolled up copy of The TV Times, “Hayahh! Montreal Regional Board.Opponents say the result will be poorer health services. While many at both hospitals also expressed a willingness to work with the CLSCs which will be taking on more tasks, some hospital employees at the Queen E and at the Reddy say plans still aren’t clear enough as to how anything will work, including how the community clinics will provide adequate care. Both hospitals are also working on ‘observations’ — arguments for the hospitals — to send to the government. The City of Westmount is also taking an active role in trying to convince the Quebec government to keep both the Queen E and Reddy Memerial-open.- - At a city council meeting Health ~ Tuesday night, Mayor Peter Trent said he has met with the Queen E hospital board and is working “very closely with both hospitals on strategies to keep them open.” While working on behalf of the hospitals isn’t nccessarily within city jurisdiction, there is a certain amount of moral suasion that the city can bring into play, he said.“We feel this is a half-baked approach,” Trent added, referring to the local closings.“Some elements make sense, but not all of it is thought through — and it's leaving us all very nervous,” added Trent, who said that he had delivered a document to Regions minister Camille Laurin showing that the Queen Elizabeth has an alternative -approach to closing; “which- should be looked at very closely.” 14 - The Westmount Examiner, Thursday, Sept.7, $895 Green Sox win fourth straight Senior slowpitch championship Rain starts to fall as last outs of summer recorded The Westmount Senior “Slow- Pitch” Softball kings were crowned on Aug.31 at the Westmount Athletic Grounds, as the defending champion Green Sox defeated the Bears 10-9.Capping a remarkable 21 win and 7 loss season, the “GSOX” claimed their fourth consecutive league title. In one of this city’s fiercest and long-lasting rivalries, the Bears/ Green Sox final once again came down to a third and deciding game.A clear indication of how closely matched and hard-fought the series was could be seen in the three-game run totals for both squads: 28 - 28.After the Sox opening game 9-8 victory, the Bears bounced back with an 11-9 win.Stellar pitching by Michael Auerbach (Sox) and JP.Dubois (Bears) kept the power-hitting line-ups on both squads from launching their usual home-run barrage.Ultimately it was a war of wills and defensive skills, with the Green Sox’ speed and youth tilting the scales. In Thursday's final, the Green Sox jumped off to a 6-1 lead in the first inning on the strength of singles by Stefan Moskovic, Toby Richardson and Mitch Wolanski, doubles by Mark Bergenbaum and Sheldon Morgan and a “frozen- rope” homer by Ted Bird. The Bears continued with two in the fourth and six runs in the seventh inning with veterans Dave Sedgwick, Allan Cameron, Mario Testa and Patrick Sheehan crossing the plate.Bears player/ manager John Everatt had his charges within one run of the Sox (who had notched four in the 6th) as a steady rain began to fall. With the tying run on first base and go-ahead run at the plate, Sox pitcher Mike Auerbach peered through the gathering darkness in search of the last out.Unleashing his infamous “knuckle-ball,” Auerbach induced a pop-up to short and the “Joy in Mudville” celebration began. In time-honoured tradition, the two squads shook hands and walked off the field together — good sports and great rivals who will fondly remember the long, hgt.summer of 95.ë Come visit the Y Westmount YMCA oO H * September 13", 14”, 15", 16”, 17" A) All classes & facilities J are open to the public Free of Charge!
