basis at Cartierville Airport Tuesday night, marking the first time in the history of the old field that night landings and takeoffs have been allowed.Authorities have always frowned on the idea because it might cause some confusion for approaching liners at nearby Dorval, whose runways are in the same pattern as Cartierville.Flyers from the various clubs around the field have been remarking for years that it would be a good idea if some form of night flying would be permitted at Cartierville. As with all things, it took the concentrated efforts of two workers to get the thing underway — Louis Boivaird, Chief Controller for the Department of Transport at Cartierville and Ed Gates, assistant chief flying instructor at the Montreal Flying Club. They made a noble effort, accomplishing an almost impossible task in the face of extreme difficulties, and I hope that those who have, and will.take advantage of this new innovation are duly appreciative, * * * A TRIBUTE: It started when Louis and Ed talked over the possibility of night flying, and the means and authority to finally implement their wishes, After a lot of arguments and meetings, permission for training flights at night was granted.Louis and Ed, almost single handedly.laid out 118 flare pots along runway 24-06 and the laxi strip to the Montreal Flying Club.Actual night flying staried at 8 p.m.and continued to midnight, with Louis operating the control tower. This was extra work for Louis for which he did not get paid, and the same with Ed.Six Flying Club aircraft used the facilities, and Louis said there were 236 “‘touches-and-goes™ in the four hour period, making onc landing and takeoff every minute, ne =} :k HARD WORK: All these flare pots must be lit and extinguished by hand. They are laid out cach Tuesday and picked up again Wednesday morning, laid out again Thursday and picked up again Friday morning.Night flying will go on twice a week, weather permitting, on Tuesday and Thursday nights.Louis says the lighting system will gradually get better.Next week he hopes to be able to use a different type of fluid in the pots, giving a little more brilliance on the runway itself.Eventually, if the idea proves popular enough, a regular lighting system may be installed.Ed Gates reminds those who are interested that only advanced bookings will be taken into consideration because of the terrific amount of work needed to get the runway prepared for night flying, It would be a real heart-breaker if they went to all this work and nobody came oul to take advantage of it, After so many years of Cartierville being closed at night, all pleasure flyers around here should take their hats off to Louis Boivaird and Ed Gates — a pair who decided to do more than dream.:k * sk COMPLEX COMMUNICATIONS: Certain DOT depariments are already using facilities at the new terminal, including the air traffic control services.CNT, which will be responsible for communications for all departments, announced that push button ‘phones have replaced a slower lever key system, allowing controllers to call and receive information from any of the vital locations within the airport area.More than 600 aircraft a day are controlled from Dorval. In the control centre, more than 50 telephone circuit terminations lead to various nerve centres within the terminal and other airports.Facilities of the meteorological office have been increased by 35 per cent.Electronic equipment sends and receives weather informations to and from more than 5,000 global points through direct connection with U.S.and British weather systems.® Bonded Roofing e Sheet Metal © Asbestos & Metal Siding for Commercial — Industrial : Residential | Maintenance and Repairs
