Unity Boys’ Club Alumni Association suggested for club By MAURICE MARIASINE In connection with the 10th Anniversary Reunion of the Unity Boys' Club, which takes place at the Club on! lin medicine in 1910.April 27, it has been proposed that an Alumni Association be formed and resolations to this effect will be presented at the anniversary get-together.An Alumni in a Boys’ Club exists primarily for the rendering of service to the club. There are many values to be derived from such an association. It may be a fund raising project in certain areas of program and scholarship or it may provide service as volunteers or a resource for jobs for boys and girls not easily placed. Before actual organization of an Alumni Association can begin, it would be wise for the club graduates to examine the climate, needs and interests of its members — things in the world that effect the way people live — the process of growing up in today's society. They must examine: inflation, transporl- ation changes, rise of spectator activities, world affairs, tensions of the world, tensions in the home, lessening of family life, competition for attention, prosperity, good times, quality of educational standards, adolescent status (present as compared to yesteryear), communications, mobility and the area of automation and the electronic age.Needs must be determined: status and sense and stocks, some of them imported from Holland, have been growing since last fall, the time.when conservatory workers begin planting for the spring show. The colorful display ranges from the short hyacinths, bordering the green house paths with various strong colors, to the taller Easter lillies which have been arranged in the shape of a cross.Included are the perennial favorites of Montreal gardens each spring: tulips, iris and daffodils, and the rarer polyanthas and snow flowers.‘Altogether there are 17.794 pieces, over 16,000 of them grown from bulbs, almost 1.400 of them plants, more than 300 roses and shrubs. The spring show is one of four which the Westmount Park conservatory officials put on a year, one each season, There are no radical innovations in the type of flowers on display, a conservatory official said.but the success with which the plants have flowered makes the show outstanding.Declaring the show officially open, Mayor J, C.Cushing, speaking at a reception, best run city in Canada, Tom Hughes ran it.Even the austere announcement of the retirement last Thursday of Mr.Thomas J.J.Hughes as the City’s general manager, though coming from Mayor Cushing, bore the unmistake- able Hughes stamp. It is difficult to imagine any announcement, even this one, without his hand. One wonders, sincerely, if Westmount will be the same without Mr.Hughes at the helm Sir: Almost half a century of loyal, devoted and elficient service in serving an employer is a record of which one can well be proud. It is an achievement more particularly when the employer is a outstanding talents and experience to the city which is regarded as the best and most efficiently administered in Canada. Its unique situation fends itself to that embelish- ment which carned the sponta- ncous admiration of visitors and generated a pride in its residents, manifested wherever it is mentioned. In a sense, it is an aristocratic cily since the majority of those who dwell within its borders are persons who belong to the so-called wealthy class. The several administrations under whom he served were guided in large measure by the counsel they received from the General Manager. They were aware and appreciated the fact that he thought and labored for the city they served with a like dedication.A former mayor stated that General Manager Hughes was selfless in his dedi- (Continued “ en».‘ «ov 2.She has faught 15,000 children “THE trouble with youngsters today is that they don’t know how to concentrate. As a result they have bad memories, forgetting what they're taught from one minute to the next.” The woman who uttered the above statement did so with the conviction gained from more than three decades of teaching children in the classroom and in the dance studio.Mary Beetles is a petite woman whose sprightly, rhythmic walk and tremendous energy belies her age.She has taught too many children — at least 15,000 according to her estimates — and coped with their parents to temper her criticisms of the present gener- » ation. The present generation is the hardest to teach, she believes, and places the blame primarily on parents who fail to insist on, and supervise, study and practice. Her criticism of today’s parents stems, in large part, from the memories she has of her father and the wonderful role he played in her early cultural development.Miss Bectles was born in Brighton, Eng.and was a Gold Medalist at the Royal Academy of Music, London.Though trained as a concert pianist she discarded a career as a soloist and became a professional accompanist, She studied ballet under Madame Wordsworth and Espinosa, ballet master of the Alhambra School in London. She admits to a total lack of ambition in her early years regarding pursuit of a professional career as either a concert pianist or ballet dancer, although she exhibited sufficient talent to pursue either career, “My father, an auditor by profession, had a deep interest in all things cultural and was an excellent dancer, himself.” Miss Beetles explains.“He imparted his love of music and dancing to me when 1 was very young and exposed me to good music and ballet as often as possible.I was brought up on opera and at the age of six could follow the score of The Messiah, my favorite.” Miss Beetle’s early ambition was far removed from these fields. She wanted to be a nurse but her parents were against this. Moreover applicants with impaired eyesight were rejected as nurses then, and this served as an added deterrent, Miss Beetles then entered the teaching profession to please her father and after a period of time as a teacher she opened her own school in London for exceptional students who felt uncomfortable or were too shy to attend regular schools. She maintained the school for five years until her father's death midway through the First World War and the death of several of her pupils due to a diphtheria epidemic so disturbed her emotionally that she decided to leave England and come to Canada. She arrived in Montreal in 1921 with her mother who one day noticed an ad in the paper that was to change the course of Miss Beetle’s life and eventually result in the establishment of one of the city's most popular dancing schools. The ad sought a pianist for a dance studio — the Shefler Dance Studio and resulted in a ten-year tenure for Miss Beetles during which she held the posts of teacher, secretary and pianist. In 1931 she opened her own school on Sherbrooke street west and then built her present building on Decarie boulevard.Miss Bcetle's strong interest in ballet brought her inte contact with many groups locally and nationally. She was ene of the founders of the Province of Quebec Dance Teachers’ Association and is a past president. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Ballet Festival Association; a vice-president of the National Ballet Guild, Montreal branch, and vice- chairman of the N.D.G.Arts and Letters Festival. She is proudest of the fact that several times she has numbered three generations of the same family among her pupils. Most of her pupils are girls because, as she explains, “Canada is not prepared to accept the idea of its young boys taking d an cing lessons. They're considered sissies.” In this respect fathers are most to blame, Miss Beetles feels.“They want them to take up football or hockey, to be ‘he-men’, but there is nothing sissified about dancing,” Miss Beetles asserts.“It is an excellent means of physical conditioning, teaches poise and balance, develops discipline and personality, and almost always encourages a developing interest in other forms of culture.” In her opinion the influence of TV with its wide exposure of ballet performers such as the Russian troupe that earned such wide acclaim, will lead more and more young males to dancing class in the next bus-boy Klaus Todte in The Queen Elizabeth's Salle Bonaventure resisted the temptation to light 2,000 bonfires.Instead he patiently glued together 1,800 of the matches to build a model Eiffel Towner.“The other 200 matches were used to light cigarettes,” says the 21-year old hotel employee who lives at 1113 Greene avenue, Westmount, Once German-born Klaus had built the two-and-a-half foot model, he felt it would be a shame to leave it in his room where no one could see it.So he brought it to the The Queen Elizabeth, fitted it with 14 tiny blue and green lights and had it accepted as a display picce in the Salle Bonaventure, the hotel's supper club.“We felt that with the lights the airiness of the model is similar to that of the real tower with the light shining through it at dusk,” says Salle Bonaventure Maitre d'Pierre.Glueing the matches together took Klaus 20 hours.“I worked on it nearly every day for two weeks after 2 a.m.when I returned from work at the hotel.” Klaus came to Canada eight months ago from Germany.where he had been working at the Berlin Hilton, The slight, dark-hair- ed young man wanted to learn English Napoleon with a wine-glass body and a hat made from wine-bottle labels, and several posters.Klaus plans to make another Eiffel Tower in a few months, “But next time I'll leave enough space for a teaching profession customarily enjoy, claim that the trials and tribulations of teaching do not begin to compare with those of business or the other professions. When this happens I like to quote for their edification these words from Jacques Bar- zun’s highly readable book ‘“The ‘Feacher in America:” “In recounting my apprenticeship I called teaching backbreaking work and lated I hinted that steady teaching is a task that would fray the nerves of an Ox.These are both sober statments. An hour of teaching is certainly the equivalent of a whole morning of office work. The pace, the concentration, the output of energy in office work are child's play compared with hahdling a class, and the smaller the class, the harder the work .Teaching in America is a twenty-four hour job, twelve months in the year; sabbatical leaves are provided so you can have your coronary thrombosis off the campus.” Your School, Your Child and You The Teacher’s toil — By E.George Cochrane, B.A., M.Ed.— People who have never done any real teaching tend, in their ignorance, to scoff at words such as these. They have no concept whatever of the tremendous toll upon one’s nervous enery that teaching takes.Nor do they realize the amount of time that the conscientious teacher spends upon preparation, or the hours of drudgery devoted to correcting examinations and term work, or of the interminable committee meetings. And yet lo the teacher comes the wonderful satisfaction of realizing that he is dealing with important things, not the tedious trivialities with which so many men and women occupy their days in order to earn a living. The teacher knows, too, that he is rendering a vitally important task, certainly infinitely more important than writing advertisments intended to persuade gullible housewives that one brand of detergent is superior to all others. But while the teacher does have his compensations and his satisfactions, he is not — as all too many appear to believe — a co creature of leisure who works a five-hour day for less than ten months of the year. There is a great deal more involved in teaching than that and 1 wish that some of the critics would pause long enough in their verbal ramblings to realize it.17 Venture Club The Venture Club of Montreal witl hold a games-night at The Salvation Army Eventide THERE IS COMPLETE DETAJL about the structure of his head and what everything signifies. Also a description of a piano sensation: “He is five feet nine inches in height and weighs 150 pounds. He is possessed of a very graceful figure and a remarkable shock of golden hair, of which he is justly proud.(My mother told me it was reddish when she heard him first but when I heard him in his last Montreal recital December 12, 1923 his hair was grey, almost white). His eyes are blue, his skin white, his nose Greco-Roman and mouth and chin as delicate as those of a girl.It is also interesting to note that his hand is small, requiring only a seven and a quarter glove, quite firm, approaching the square type, with the finger tips spatulat- ed.This is in perfect accord with his brilliancy as a pianist.” A GOOD DEAL of this long article is technical. The final paragraph is a thumbnail sketch and noteworthy is that it tells Paderewski taught piane « « « “Paderewski, the present hero of the musical world, was born at Podalia, a province in Russian Poland, November 6, 1860.He began to play at the very early age of three years. At seven he was placed under a teacher and learned so rapid- Jy that after five years of instruction he started out as a Shorps, Flats ond Naturals public performer.(Van Cliburn also began at three and at 13 won the State of Texas competitions.) At the age of 18 he was appointed professor of music in the Conservatory at Warsaw and in 1884 he accepted a similar position at Strassburg. In 1887, after a careful preparation, he made his formal debut as a compelitor for the highest pianistic honors before the critical musical circles of Vienna and immediately became recognized as one of the greatest living players.Three years ago he (ook Londen by storm and at present he is the undisputed lion among the music lovers of the United States.” It was after he studied with Leschetizsky that he became a sensation.WHEN THE PADEREWSK] Memoirs appeared in serial form in the Saturday Evening Post 1 kept them, then bought the book upon publication soon after (1938).It is an enlightening volume but like most memoirs it is not written by the pianist-composer but in collaboration with Mary Lawton.it is stated in the preface that the contents are authentic. There is a remarkable picture of Paderewski's hands at the keyboard and anyone who wants to read an exciting autobiography will find plenty to interest them from start to finish in this thick volume. It concludes with ‘Later Memoirs In Preparation.” I do not know if there is another book.PADEREWSKI left many compositions to the world and perhaps had he not been the world's foremost concert pianist he would have had more recognition as a composer. His celebrated next week fund-raising campaign delayed in their annual collections by the Easter and Passover holidays, worked to complete their cards. The campaign opened April 6 with an objective of $330,000.lt was to have closed April 20 but was extended into next week to compensate for the holidays.Mrs.Slattery.Holton avenue, Westmount, chairman, reported A tribute paid .(Continued from page 4) cation to the city's welfare. This is indeed a (ribute of which he can well be proud. In the years to come it will give him pleasant recollections.Thomas J.J.Hughes, during his tenure of office.could at all times count upon the loyalty and co-uperation of not only the heads of the several departments but the city's humblest employee. They instinctively sensed his fairmindedness and his promptness in thanking his senior or junior subordinates for a job well done.Fortunate is the city or enterprise that can attract men of the Hughes type. The Mayor and members of the City Council have wisely decided to retain him in an advisory capacity. They will thus continue to benefit from his suggestions. His successor, Norman T.Dawe, who possesses executive and administrative ability of a high order and who was associated with his Chief, will emulate him in both initiative and municipal foresight.Bernard Rose maninoff had to be performed at every concert the Russian gave. His one opera, ‘‘Manru’’ won considerable success.1t was begun in 1897 and Padercwski completed it in 1900 and it had its premiere on May 29, 1901 in Dresden.that $109,793 had been received to-date.While this was just a fraction under one third of the Montreal objective.Mrs.Slattery said she was hopeful that with the extended canvassing time, the goal would be reached, At the same time she appealed to all volunteers to complete their assignments and make their returns with the lcast possible delay."We still have a long way to po ard a lot of work to clean up b-fore it will be possible to make any estimate on final returns. But we got off to a good start and Westmount Examiner, 19 Friday, April 22, 1960 1 am confident of the outcome,” Mrs.Slattery said.Mrs, Mackenzie stressed the fact that the $330,000 objec tive was the rock bottom minimum required to maintain the Society's three fold program of “The only way we can hope te exceed our objective is for all triends of the Society, whether tl ey are called on by a canvasser or not, to send their donations atreet te campaign headquarters at 2205 Bishop street” “I also want to express the cordial thanks of the Canadian Cancer Society to all volunteer canvassers who helped us during the campaign,” Mrs, Shdtery said, As a convenience to canvassers and other workers the Society's offices
