reduction,in the number injured is significant as with the increased number of traffic accidents an increased number of injured persons would have been expected.The opening of the campaign against Drive more slowly.Speeds allowable under good conditions become excessive on slippery sireets.} Have the mechanical condition of your car checked, particularly brakes, steering mechanism, lights, heaters and dcfrosters.I Give pedesirians time lo cross streets safely; winter conditions make - walking difficult too.F If you plan a considerable amount of driving during winter months, have your car equipped with snow tires or chains.Check for leakage in your exhaust, muffler or 1ailpipe.Danger from fatal carbon monoxide furaes is most acute during winter months.Hi your car skids, turn your wheels in the diree- tion of the skid, but do noi apply brakes.On ice, slop and start genily.Pump your brakes as you stop; start off slowly in second or high gear to obtain traction.By the Way .The Interplanetary Society (wilh which is incorporated the Friends of Space Society) has been considering the possible effects on human beings of 1ravel lc the planets.A jeurney te, say, Mars does not seund very stimulating when the diet recommended is “frozen food in tins.” There is ne need to go to Mars to enjoy that standard of living.Funthermore: psychologists, pathologists, physiologists, and peychialrists say that luck of sleep in space acts On pcopie “like alcoholic poisoning.” My advice is, stay at horne and enjoy both your rinking and your sleep.Beachcomber | YOU SAY Municipal inferest urged on residenfs (The following letter is reprinted from The Monitor, Nov.20.) Sir: Since in constitutionally governed countries the municipality is a minor democracy, it behooves all who are interested in good and efficient government to avail themselves of opportunities to participate directly or indirectly in making their contribution.Direct participation is accepting office as a member of the administration.Indirect participation is membership in an association that devotes itself to the study of the problems and situations that every level of government is confronted with.The example of the nearby Westmount Citizens Association should not only awaken an interest in the municipality's welfare but generate an urge to serve, that has been so characteristic of the public spirited citizens who have given so generously of their time and ability to make Westmount one of the most outstanding civic administrations on this continent.The people of Westmount have indeed been fortunate in the type of citizen who was induced to become a member of the Council or the City Chief Magistrate.For this interest in the city's welfare and government, the credit is due to the Municipal Association.It has been instrumental over the years in getting the City’s prominent and highly respected citizens to become associated with it and make it a model that earned the praise of all who are concerned with municipal government.I think it can be said of Westmount, that it is a city of distinction, of which its residents can well be proud.It ig also a splendid example of that civic patriotism that is willing to serve without compensation other than the satisfaction of making a worthwhile contribution to every activity within the city that affects the health, general welfare and security of all who dwell within its borders.Westmount's highly competent and experienced General Manager and the principal officers of his staff have been frequently commended for their readiness to help citizens who may request their counsel, aid, or cooperation.The several departments are manned by efficient employees who are as anxious to still further enhance the prestige of the city as those who constitute the Council.In its appeal, the Municipal Association mentions: “The high standard of administration our City enjoys today.” Pa py Prescriptions are Victor Cape, the widely known Montreal pharmacist, has devoted a lifetime to preserving the pharmacist's role in the community.He entered the pharmaceutical profession in 1915 as a 13 year-old delivery boy, studied on his own, and without attending high school entered McGill University to graduate in pharmacy in 1924, Today at 56, energetic and young voiced, Mr.Cape owns four drug stores located at 5333 Queen Mary road, 3723 St.Lawrence boulevard, Guy and St.Catherine streets, and Quirk’s, St.Catherine and Pierce, where he first started to deliver prescriptions.Mr.Cape likes to say that he and his community-minded partner Nathan Cohen operate drugstores with the accent on prescription service rather than junior department stores.A true pharmacist, Mr.Cape welcomes the current trend in his profession to return to the professional prescription pharmacy.During an Interview in his administrative office at 2765 Bates road, Mr.Cape said: “Our prescription departments are operated as separate entities, with personnel specially trained for that work.We specialize in prescription service and the large volume of prescriptigns filled proves that point.” Quirk's Drug Store, one of Montreal's oldest pharmacies, founded in 1899, received this year the Prescription Award from E.R.Squibb and Son for one million prescriptions filled.It was Quirk's Drug Store where Mr.Cape first became a $4 a week delivery boy.'The son of the late Israel Cape, whose shoe business was hit by the depression in 1912, Victor was born in the heart of Montreal where the old Montreal General Hospital was located.He has six brothers and one sister, Mrs.Edith Yates.Five brothers are associated with Mr, Cape today.The sixth and youngest brother, Saul, owns the Monkland pharmacy which Victor Cape and Nathan Cohen once owned.Shortly after Mr.Cape joined Thomas Quirk the latter was badly hurned while preparing a prescription.Victor showed such interest and devotion during that period that Mr.Quirk promised the boy to help him in his studies.“I studied at night, had a bit of This standard was made possible because of the Association's work and successful endeavor to influence prominent and distinguished residents to actively identify themselves with City’s government.The invitation that the Association extends is one that should be accepted by those who appreciate good progressive and efficient government.The very fine women of the municipality should enroll in large numbers since the municipality is really a large household, the members of which seek to live in harmony, peace and gocdwill.Bernard Rose so» er.- have grown with Snowdon and N.D.G.” Mr.Cape said his career had followed a steady pattern of study and work.“When 1 first entered the pharmaceutical profession we were trained to manufacture and compound but with the scientific advances that have been made in recent years the pharmaceutical manufacturers have taken over the work of the pharmacist and today more prescriptions are filled by prescription specialties than by actual compound,” he said.“The trend has changed from compounding to prescription specialty dispensing with the result that his business .u 4.+ + the cost of prescription products have increased accordingly.” Merchandising and modern ways of business have made such inroads, Mr.Cape said, that the drug business has become departmentalized and - the drug store functions as a family service store catering to all members of the family, The change in buying habits, he continued, had taken place as a result of the movement of the population to suburbs, Mr.Cape, a small, lively man, with a sandy complexion, travels to many medical conventions to keep abreast in all medical and pharmaceutical developments.He has just returned from a trip to Europe to investigate a dramatic new product in medicine which is still at the secret list.He made calls in London, Paris and Brussels.Since June, 1929, eM».Cape has been married to the former Fan Rashkin, petite and attractive.They have two sons.Ronald, 26, a graduate of Princeton University (in chemistry) and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, is associated with his father's distributing agency dealing in highly specialized medical products.Ronald graduated first in a class of 700 at Princeton and was a Baker scholar at Harvard.Michael, 20, is in his third year engineering at McGill.He is vice-chairman of the junior division of the Combined Jewish Appeal and: vice-president of the ZBT fraternity.An ardent fisherman, Mr.Cape is a member of the Moose Lake Fish and Game Club at St.Donat.In his office is a photograph of Mr.Cape with his prize catch of a nine and a half _ pound speckled trout caught in July, 1942.That fish won him the contest sponsored by the magazine, Hunting and Fishing.Mr.Cape has always participated in the social, communal and sporting activities of local areas, sponsoring jun- jor hockey teams and assisting various church and infancy, they like to practise and be able to play them.There is such a variety of.earols to choose from that each and every child can be happy with his practice.Here are a few exceedingly popular collections for elementary pianists: Christmas Carols For Children (John Ferris Loth), Christmas Melodies (Ada Richter), Let Us Have Music For Christmas (Maxwell Eckstein), World Famous Christmas Carols (Boris Berlin), Christmas Carols (two Books, ‘Blake and Capp).Solos for piano are avail-k— able in all grades but are too numerous to mention here.There is a Book of Carols by Harry Hill called The Singing Period which does a triple service.The 32 carols included in this volume are suitable for Church choirs, children’s voices and the home circle, All your favorite tunes are in the index.There are several sorts of combinations in Christmas choral music: two-part treble (soprano and alto); three-part treble (two sopranos and alto); 3 part mixed, 4 part mixed (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) with piano or organ accompaniment.An interesting album, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Band Book has heen assembled by Arthur Case.It contains ten favorites, among which are Jolly Old St.Nicholas, Deck The Halls, Jingle Bells, and Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Another splendid collection of 17 Chorales and 22 carols is a book chosen and arran~ed by Charles O'Neill.Also The Christmas Band Book by Clair W.Johnson and Harold Wallers is a selection of 14 favorites containing Adeste Fideles as a concert paraphrase, Christmas Reverence (processional); The First Nowel has been arranged by Johnson as a band fantasy, Jingle Bells has been made into a Rhapsody, The Messiah an Overture, Yuletide at Yorkshire is a pot-pourri of English Carols and Two Christmas Classics are specially arranged for brass sextet.This book ought to appeal to school and scout handmasters.October police .(Continued from Page 3) crogswalks and 11 for parking illegally.Comparative figures for of Commissionaires employees as parking inspectors was completed during the last week of October.They are concerned with parking infractions only, During the month, signs were erected on Grosvenor avenue pro- hibiting through truck traffic.‘ Another band book, important, with 22 numbers is Christmas Carols arranged by G.E.Holmes.This musician has done a good job for trios, quartets, quintets and sextets.The Piano Accordion is more popular in the States than Canada but performers on this pleasant instrument will find joy in an album entitled Christmas Time, which is a treasury of 14 famous Christmas Carols by accordionist Nicolo Antonelli.Saying of the Week: The newspaper press is the people's university.Half the readers of Christendom read little else.James Parton 1822-1891, it is a given thing, just as the world is a given thing.We cannot add to the world or substract from it — The scientist, as I think I have said before, is a man who is deeply concerned with the natural world and spends himself to the unravelling her secrets.Even in his moments of apparent relaxation he is aware of nature's problems, and ready to solve them.Nature is his life.So there are men who are deeply concerned in super-nature, in the fact of God, in the revelation which He has granted of Himself, in the facts of the Incarnation and Redemption, not only the nature of God.One might deeply concerned in the problems * been a satisfactory series of of men.And just as the scientist enjoys a progressive understand- ian enjoys a progressive understanding of God and the sociologist gains a deeper understanding of man.Neither scientist nor theologian nor the sociologist can alter the basic given facts; but each must go on with his study, and seek interpretations that are both deeper and simpler.The given facts remain unaltered.Each student should be aware of his own field of study and also of the other fields; and each will contribute to the other.We know more about God today than our grandfathers did because we know more about man and his world.But there is a danger that we may become less aware of God because we are satisfied with an earthly knowledge.We need a breadth of vision and a depth of understanding if we are in any degree to comprehend the truth.x | Dominion Douglas , 1 Church * AMERICA DAY SERVICE Since 1947 Dominion-Douglas United Church has observed A Special Day in recognition of the good understanding and firm friendship existing between the United States and Canada and of the fact that so many Americans are doing so much in Canada to build up the church and to advance other worthy interests and ideals which bind the two countries together.“America Day Service” will be held in Dominion-Douglas next Sunday morning at eleven o'clock.Dr.Lloyd Smith will preach.Theme: “Freedom's Holy Light".All American citizens are invited.PRESBYTERIAN MELVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 349 Melville Avenue Westmount, P.0 The Rev.Chas.€.Cochrane, B.A., B.D., Minister Sunday, November 23rd ANNIVERSARY SUNDAY 11:00 a.m.Church School 11:00 a.m.Public Worship Anniversary Preacher: Rev.Dr.Joseph C.McLelland PhD.of Presbyterian College Sermon: “From A to 2" Dedication of Memorial Chimes and Plague in Honor of the late Miss Lillian S.Kerr 4:00-6:00 p.m.Anniversary Tea 6:00 p.m.Evening Service The Minister will Preach Visitors and Friends are Cordially Welcome ‘ € ® WESTMOUNT one VieTORIA AVES.@ Rev.J.D.Wilkie, B.A., Minister Mr.George A.Tannahill B.A.Assistant to the Minister.Sunday, November 23rd 11:00 a.m, ‘’Predestination’’ “Thou shalt ., I will” 11:15 am.The Church School 8:00 p.m.Bible Study Group.DORIS KILLAM R.R.T.C., L.Mus, (McGill) em : “ w SP mp roi ere St.Andrew's United ¥ .Church .a eee This is National Young People’s Week and, in observance of this, a Young People’s Service will be held in St.Andrew Church, Westmount, on Sunday evening.Members of the exec.tive of St.Andrew's Young People’s Union will conduct the service, and the address will be given by the president, John A, Lochead.The theme of Young People’s Week is, “A faith to Proclaim”, Following the service the Young People will hold à reception in the Church Hall.The Worship Service in the morning will be conducted by the assistant minister, Rev.David Ç, Searfoss.His sermon is entitleq, “No, Thank You, Just Looking", The choir, directed by Mr.Eric Adams, will sing appropriate selections at the two services, The Church School has a place for children and young people- of all age groups.The Intermediates and Seniors meet on Sunday at ten o’clock, all other departments— (Crib Corner, Nursery, Beginners, Primary and Junior Departments) —at eleven o'clock.The Evening Group of the Woman's Association will meet on Monday evening and the Womans’ Association on Tuesday afternoon.+ * | Temple Emanu-El | X ¥ Sabbath services: Friday evening, Nov.21, at 8:15, Dr.Stein will speak on ‘The Divine Ladder” at Temple Emanu-El Saturday morning, Nov.22, at 11:30, “Surely God Is Here.” Bar Mitzvah: Robert, son of Mr.and Mrs.Salvador Sinai, 701 Grosvenor avenue, will he called to the reading of the Torah this Friday evening and Saturday morning, in observance of his Bar Mitzvah.Book Lovers’ Forum: Under the auspices of the Temple Siz.terhood, Book Lovers’ Forum will be held on Wednesday afternoon, Nov.26, at 2:45, at Victoria hall, Westmount, when Dr, Stèrn will review “The Enemy Camp” by Jerome Weidman.Presiding at this meetin: Mrs.David H.Lisser, president of Temple Sisterhood, co-chaii- man of the day; one of the chief being the finding of sufficient space.Major stories and pictures from all parts of the world stream into the editorial rooms of these papers all day long, amounting to millions of words a day.In addition, the larger papers have their own correspondents.Next to world news comes Canadian news, a large part of which is associated with the Federal Government.Government today directly affects the lives of all individuals and the countless government agencies are continually making news, As Montreal has grown, the city itself produces more news: more crime, traffic, waterfront stories, The big hotels are the sites of frequent conventions.Important personalities visiting or passing through the city are interviewed.At the local or community level the problem of providing news spaceris still more acute, In former years it was less difficult to find space for community matters, Now the dailies must leave most of this type of news for the weekly or community papers to handle and, Mr.Haviland added, they are performing a valuable service.Dailies are still glad to publish unusual church newg that has appeal to a large segment of their readers and are glad to interview church leaders and lecturers.The situation is further complicated by the habit big stories have of coming in bunches all at the same time.This brings the problem of selection for the available space so many good stories have to be.left out.Mr.Haviland made some suggestions to those sending church or other news to the papers.He pointed out that old news is not news so, he said, get it in on brief, give the correct place and time and the pertinent facts.When possible, take or send your copy in rather than phoning.‘This gives greater assurance of accuracy.Typewritten copy is preferable to hand written as it saves the editorial staff time and trouble.Double space your lines and use one side of paper only.Church notices are not news but he advised that they be sent in just the same, not that they will necessarily be published but they often give the newspaper staff a lead to some story they are glad to cover.Such notices -should always be sent well in advance.During the question period it was shown that compared to other metrovolitan papers, Montreal dailies give a generous amount of space to church and community news.Mr.McCurdy speaking on radio publicity said, many of the problems of the newspapers applied to radio publicity with the difference that with radio time instead of space was involved.It was a principle of broadcasting to allot a proportion of free time to what was called public service.There are of course necessary limitations to free time.He explained a number of points that apply to radio alone.During the d'scussion period some criticism was made of ministers and lecturers who have a fine message but spoil it by poor delivery and poor radio technique.It was sug- gosted that such faults could be overcome if the ones in- * * | Temple Emanu-El | x x (Continued from Page 6) David H.Lisser, George Hollin- ger, David Sherman, Samuel Schwartz, Mark Stein, Samuel Garfield, Louis J.Cohen, Irvin Gertsman, Gaston Albright.Chairmen of the Oneg Shabbat are: Mrs.Louis Pont, Mrs.Sidney Lithwick and Mrs.George Rauch, School for Adults: Monday evening, Nov.21, 8 to 8:45 the following courses will be offered: The Bible as the Fountainhead of Learning, Dr.Anna Stearus, leader;
