balloting.Webster polled 15,803 votes and Marler 16,803.Amedee Jasmin, the CCF candidate ran up a score of 687, while the fourth man in the field, Henri Naud, Social Credit candidate, polled 190 votes.Checking the polls after the shouting and the tumult had died — it was evident that the city of Westmount and the St.Andrew's section of the riding had turned the trick.Voting for PC candidate Webster was fairly heavy in the Upper Level sector, medium between Guy and Atwater and weak between Greene avenue and the Glen in the lower sector. The Ridgewood sector, hoth candidates held meetings, was about even, Webster won the majority of the polls, but Liberal candidate took a fair number, and in some spots ran up quite high totals, while in others the figure for the former transport minister wag surprisingly low.A much greater interest was shown by the electors this time, campaign workers and officials reported, than in June last, when Hon.Mr.Marler had a majority of 2.683.Mr.Marler conceded his defeat quite early in the contest, and in an interview over a local radio station said that while the loss was his first in many years of public life, and as a result was somewhat of a shock, he realized there was a national swing to the Conservatives, and that he had been caught in it.where Ÿ His words and tone indicated Webster wins Westmount with majority of 3,000 In line with the coast-to-coast swing to the PCs — Westmount electors trekked to the polls Monday in large numbers to give A.Ross Webster a tidy 3,000 majority over Hon.George Marler, former Liberal transport minister in one of the really surprising upsets of the Federal that he would continue his interest in politics.Successful candidate Webster, accompanied by his wife and daughter and a host of sup-x porters, went on a parade around the district by motor-car and wound up at the Windsor Hotel, where the PC candidates gathered in the ballroom for a period of mutual admiration.Webster was carried into the ballroom on the shoulders of his cheering supporters. It whs a great victory and a great night for many Conservatives, and in the crowd were to be seen some who had worked for the disturbance, no theft, no fire — this was the report of the Westmount Police and Fire Departments for this week. However the guardians of public safety and welfare managed to put in a busy seven days handling minor accidenta and nuisance calls, There were 20 accidents throughout the weck, but damage was negligible. One person was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where injuries were diagnosed as minor and the patient dismissed.A false alarm from Dorchest- er and Hallowell was the most annoying call received by the Fire Department.Trucks from two stations were alerted for the fruitless errand.Steam from an overheated furnace, defective wiring, a smell of oil and to small rag fires completed the list of calamities which plagued residents and the ever-patient firemen were there in each cage to allay any panic, Mentally retarded people aie those whose intelligence, broadly speaking, does not develop io the point where they can lead completely normal lives.WITNESS TO
