dealt mainly with the current unemployment situation and the proposed methods of dealing with it.! : He denounced the Conser- | vative plan for spending $1,- 185,000,000.00 on extensive public works as a ‘phoney | programme”, inflated to give it an impressive appearance when, in reality M it does not provide for B added spending for public 6 works.8 “On examination,” he said, of the Council, such construction is warranted by reasons of health, hygiene or other special circumstances,” Previously.no apartment .or publie building was allowed an incinerator.Recent report from Gity Hall, Westmount plans in the near future to construct a larger melting pond to allow for more efficient disposal of snow, The measure is prompted by the exceplionally heavy snowfall this year, which made it necessary to dump snow in West- mount Park as an interim depot. As a matter of fact, it took only four days to fill the park and later, when the crisis was over, five days were required to remove what was dumped and tig ed, dispose of it at the present poad.i i WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 1958 AMEDEE JASMIN, CCF (Social Democratic Party) can- date in St.Antoine-Westmount Constituency.Mr.Jasmin was born in St.Laurent and educated at St.Laurent and Ste.Therese Colleges and the University of Montreal. He was admitted to notarial practice in 1907 and for 14 years practised in the city of Terrebonne, Que.before leaving to live in Paris, where for eight years he attended the Sorbonne, le Collège de France and the famous St.Guillaume Street School of Social and Economic Sciences. He has practised his profession in Ville Emard for the past 27 years since his return to Canada in 1929.He was one of the founders of the CCF party in Quebec and he is outspoken in his political opinions.Me will tell anyone who cares to listen that he, having suffered himself, during the depression of 1929 and having built up his security only through difficulty and hardship, does not want his children and grandchildren to be victims of financial fluctuations.and stock market whims, He knows that this wish ean only be realized through a social and economic system based on justice and humanity such as the CCF advocates.Next week's weather By ERIC NEAL MARCH 29 to APRIL 5 This week opens with' cool nights, warm, mainly sunay days and soft winds with blue skies, then field took me frequently to the Legislature in Quebec and when in 1942 the riding of Westmount-St.George become vacant | was elected to represent you in Quebec.ln 7948, | was chosen Leader of the Opposition.Because there were only eight of us in the opposition at the time, this added responsibility was another new and challenging experience, very arduous indeed, but rewarding in the greater opportunities for service that it afforded.’ ° e ° In the circumstances, therefore, it now seems natural to me that in 1954 | readily accepted Mr.St.Laurent's invitation to become a member of his government.Being Minister of Transport.for Canada was the greatest challenge with which | had been faced and undoubtedly the most exacting. To meet that challenge | gave up my notarial practice, and for nearly three years | devoted all my time and energy to my ministerial duties.° ° ° I was the first Montrealer to be appointed as- Minister of Transport.Because of Montreal's vital interest in transportation, it seemed to me that my appointment provided an unusual opportunity for me fo serve, in a very special way, the community in which | had grown up and which | knew so very well, ® e ° - For example, it was while | was Minister of Transport that work started on the complete modernization of the Montreal harbour's grain handling facilities and the new piers that will be needed when the Seaway opens. Also, construction of the Nun's Island Bridge and the new passenger terminus at Dorval were started, as well as many other projects in this area and the rest of Canada.° .° Of course, my responsibilities as a minister ended when the Liberal government resigned in June ‘1957, but nevertheless since then | have devoted all of my time to representing my electors in Parliament, e ° ° - Throughout all these years | have tried to give you the kind of representation to which you are entitled; to support good measures and to oppose those that were bad or unwise, but above all to stand up fearlessly for what | believed was just and fair, regardless of where the political chips might fall.° .° If you believe that | can continue to give you the kind of representation that you deserve and that my experience will be useful in parliament, | shall appreciate the support you give me by voting im my favour next Monday, March 31st, .Inserted by St.Antoine- Westmount Liberal Committee ‘Westmount Examiner, Friday, March 28, 1958 - WE SAY Municipal group and City Council * ESTMOUNT Municipal Association president Mr.A.O.Leslie in a letter on this page replies to last week's editorial on City Council discussing public business in private.| Legalistically he is right in denying that the association favors open Council discussion. But this suggests that his executive does not now command the confidence of the membership. It is peculiar to see an executive with a long record of past actions taken without necessarily getting the membership’s approval, feeling that on this, issue it cannot act in the name of the association.| Mr.Leslie also denies mayor and aldermen are creotures of the association. What else can un- onposed nominees be?For years the only route to Council seats has been by acclamation through the association's almost invariably unopposed nominations.Strange cre- ’ atures if not the association’s! ! There are citizens who trust the executive will recommend fully open Council meetings to the membership for discussion and vote at the annual meeting on May 8.No one suggests West- mount is not among the best-run municipalities anywhere.‘ But many suggest that it is dangerous and unhealthy to conduct publie business behind closed doors. All the more dangerous when those conducting it are, by system and custom, the unopposed and virtually unopposable nominees of a single body.Vote on Monday; it's your duty MPORE than 2,000,000 = Canadians failed to exercise their franchise last June — though they were legitimately on the official list of electors.Probably: they were responsible — more than any other single factor — for the stalemate that has brought about the current Federal election at a cost of more than $10,000,000.Monday — go out and vote. The ability to cast a | SAY! YOU Editorial answered by WMA president Sir: Your editorial of March 21 states that the “West- mount Municipal Association is on record as favoring open discussion of the City's business in open City Council meetings.” I must point out that the association has not gone on record in any way in respect to the holding of meetings by the City Council.Following the directions of the association’s membership at a meeting on Dec.10 last, the executive committee of the association has been considering certain questions in respect to the functioning of the City Council. The executive has not yet reached any conclusions on these matters. In any event, the findings and recommendations of the executive will have to be submitted to the association as a whole at a full meeting and approved, before they can be said to represent the association's views. This same editorial refers to the mayor and aldermen a3 “creatures” of the Municipal Association. This is not in accordance with the facts.Candidates for civic office have on most occasions, been elected to office by acclamation.Inasmuch as other candidates have not been put forward, it must be concluded that the electors havd endorsed the association's recommendations. While the association is ready at election THEY SAY time if necessary to work for its candidates, once they have been elected they carry ouc their duties according to their own best judgment, A.V.Leslie, President Catholic pupils pose a problem Sir: While canvassing for Mr, Marler, I came across the following problem which is of great concern to many fami lies in the eastern part of our riding. As it is completely outside the federal field, I am passing it on to you in the hope that mention in The Examiner may inspire some solution.Brie fily, French-speaking Catholics in the area between Atwater and Fort street are members of the parish of St Leon-de-Westmount.Natural ly, these people would prefer to send their children to St Leo's School, the most con venient to their homes. However, these families are.of course, not citizens of Westmount. Therefore, they must pay $10 or $15 per child per month to the Westmount commission. As you can ap preciate, a total of $30 to $60 per month is an impossible burden to many lower-income families, Is there any way in which some arrangement could be made between the Montreal and Westmount commissions to remove this seeming IN equity ?SAY R.J.Joy , Love your neighbour, yet pull not down your hedge.—GEORGE HERBERT. si im à dem SES TE = & sr i 5% & % ; / 2 - 3 - YOURS AT 3 eee - ou mn" ‘ - NO EXTRA COST! by which Charles Reiner of 1375 Greene Avenue, Westmount, has managed to make for himself a new life thousands of miles from his original homeland and at the same time secure an international reputation. In 1947 Mr.Reiner, a young obscure pianist residing in Budapest, decided time was ripe to begin a concert career and see the world.“The only method of achieving this purpose was to be sent as one of the official Hungarian competitors to the famed International Music Competition at Geneva, he says.“I was one of those selected for the 1948 competition who did not chose to return to my native land.” The winning of one of the major prizes at Geneva gained for Mr.Reiner a «certain fame.and a Geneva scholarsh'p to study further. From 1948-50, he studied under the late Dinu Le- patti, a pianist for whom Mr.Reiner has always had the greatest admiration, “lI must admit that gaining first award in the piano section of the all arts competition arranged by a cultural section of the U.N.especially for stateless persons, was a big break, “Mr.Reiner says.As a result of this distinction, he displayed his skill in such large _European centers as London, Paris, Amsterdam and Zurich.A native of Canada since 1951, Mr.Reiner is .especially enthusiastic about modern Canadian works, “I am always on the lookout for Canadian composers to supply me with scores of their works in order that many of these may be included in concert programs,” he said.“Violet Archer, Istvan Anhalt, Alexander Brott, Jean Papinean- Couture, and Clermont Pepin all seem to be of international standard, Some of Miss Archer's music was included in my very first Montreal concert.” Mr.Reiner is not one of those who bclieves that Montreal represents a musical wilderness.“There is plenty to do here even in chamber and accompaniment work.” he stressed.“It is very difficult to obtain solo work in almost every North American city.So far I have been quite lucky, giving four or five concerts almost every year.” He has played before such diversified groups as the Ladies Morning Musical Club, the Wo- Fossils club annual show April 19-May 3 appearances. When interpreting a composer’s work, Mr.Reiner believes that a very important factor must be present.“It is an attitude of utmost modesty toward the composer, complete reverence for his output, the performer’s personality should be displayed only through his work.” Bach, Beethoven, Bartok and Debussy, rank among Mr.Reiner’'s favorites. He considers Bartok and Stravinsky outstanding geniuses of the 20th century.“Bartok is the true sue- cessor of Beethoven,” he holds, “the contrepunctal ability of both these men is very close. Moreover Bartok true to the tradition of Beethoven is not primarily concerned with the public but rather with what he considers to be idea essential to the advancement of music.” A teaching position at the Mc- Gill Conservatorium of Music, as well as his many other activities have tended to cut down Mr.Reiner's practicing to four hours a day.“This past summer, I was very fortunate through the generosity of a friend to secure a house in the Eastern Townships for a few months. In the manner of a squirrel gathering nuts for the winter, I crammed seven to eight hours of practice a day during this period.” An ardent soccer fan since his youth, Mr.Reiner can usually be found at local matches whenever time is available. It is however the theatre, particularly modern, which appeals to his The Drama of Salvation Act V.Mark 14-15 B .y The Venerable R.Kenneth ‘Naylor, D.D., Rector, Trinity Memorial Church Wednesday of Holy Week is a day of quietness as far as Jesus is concerned but His enemies are busy with plans to take Him with subtlety and kill Him.Then the opportunity came to them, for Judas seeks out the chief priests and agreed to deliver Him up to them.Perhaps Judas’ mind is finally made up by an incident in Bethany as they sit at supper and a woman enters with a box of very costly ointment which she pours over Him.Some are indignant at the waste, and John tells us that the person chiefly offended is Judas.Jesus defends the extravagance as a preparation for His own burying. Now comes the first day of unleavened bread according to Mark's telling of the story.John changes the date by one day.On: either reading Jesus prepares to eat the Last Supper with His disciples.Secrecy is essential for He knows that His enemies are on the watch, and He is determined to eat the meal in the Holy City, the City of David. It is His by right, and He will not bé forced out.Neither will He leave the initiative with the enemy. So He comes in the evening with the Twelve, As they eat Jesus reveals the betrayal, even by one that dips with Him in the dish. Then comes the high point of the supper as Jesus tales bread, blesses it and breaks and gives to His disciples with the words: “Take.ye; this is my Body": and likewise with the cup: “This is my Blood of the Covenant”.They must have thought back to the Covenant at Sinai, Then they adjourn .to the Mount of Olives where Jesus again foretells His death and Resurrection and His leading of them into Galilee.Jesus also fortells Peter's denial. Then He takes the Three as His witnesses and enters into the Garden of jethsemane and falls into an agony. It is not the agony of fear of physical suffering.but of coming into close personal touch with sin.Up to now the initiative has been with Him: now He is to surrender it and deliberately put Himself into the hands of His enemies. He has not even the watchful support of the Three. They cannot watch with Him.Now Judas appears to play his part in the tragedy with armed servants and soldiers. There is a small resistance on the part of the disciples and then the Master is taken and the dis- ci les flee.Jesus is taken to the Count of over, but not the insults.Meantime, Peter in his fear has denied his Master, and early dawn has come. Then they bring Jesus before Pilate, the Roman governor, and force him to condemn the Prisoner.Pilate tries to have Jesus pardoned — on the Passover amnesty — but the mob demands Barabbas, one of their own number, instead, and further demands the crucifixion of Jesus. Then follows the scourging and the insults of the soldiers, and the journey to the Cross, with Simon of Cyrene compelled to carry the Cross bar.Jesus refuses the drugged wine.He faces death without any relief.Pilate writes the inscription "The King of the Jews”, and orders two robbers to be crucified with Him.The rulers taunt Him with His helplessness, and even the robbers vent their spleen on Him.Once before He dies He cries with a loud voice, “My God.my God, why has Thou forsaken Me?"”, quoting from Psalm 22.That is all that Peter has heard standing at some distance from the Cross. As Jesus dies the veil of the Temple is rent, symbolizing the end of an era. Before sunset Joseph of Arima- thea secures permission to remove the Body.He lays it in a linen cloth in a rock hewn tomb and the tomb is closed with a rock. For all that men can see or know a life of holiness and service has ended in tragedy.Perfect goodness cannot face the craftiness of self-seeking men. There is an addition of one to the long roll of martyrs. So ft stands on that most sorrowful of Sabbath days as the Body lies in the tomb. But strangely enough things are not like that.To quote Mark's informant, “It was not possible that Jesus should be holden of death.” "And so, very early on the first day of the week, when the women came to complete the embalming of the Body they find the stone rolled back and the grave empty, and a young man sitting on the right side arrayed in a white robe, who says, "He is risen: He is not here: behold the place where they laid Him.” The immediate and natural response of the women is flight, “for they were afraid.” So what had seemed to be the areatest of tragedies.becomes the greatest of triumphs, but none the less dramatic for that.Up to now the greatest of dramas have heen tragedies, but here for the first time since the fall of man the power of God is seen in its beauty and love.Dominion-Douglas WA The Women's Assoc.of
