[" Westmount By TONY PATTERSON x Making up in tension and stress what it lacks in adventure and romance i "the annual Winter drama: of snow-removal — -a drama that is played out continuously in West- mount from mid-Novem- ber to late March.With .miles of sidewalk and*6‘miles 0: lane to tend, there is little rest | for City Engineer J.R.Daye and his men when the snow starts to fall.When.it continues to fall, ‘their task at times approaches the herculean.Mr.Daye supervises a staff of 170, a number which can be increased to as many as 250 on “heavy days, who in turn handle a fleet of massive machines designed to plow, lift and transport snow and to maintain passable roads through this municipality.As drudging as the job might seem, it presents its material for first rate suspense—not to mention mystery.WEATHER REPORTS The City of Westmount receives weather reports twice a day from a private industrial forecasting bureau.If weather is expected to be troublesome the reports become proportionately more frequent.A typical storm is the one handled over the last week.A report came in warning of a snowfall, and predicting that, it would be remarkably heavy and would be constant over a lengthy period of time.The fail started at 3:00 a.m.Sunday.SALT SPREADERS The two salt spreaders operated by the municipality © were immediately sent into action.Following a predetermined route they spread first the main arteries through the City and then worked their way through the 7 districts into which the municipality Is divided for this purpose.This operation continued right through for the duration of the storm.When one round was completed, they started once more at the beginning.In the meantime, 10 plow trucks, from 4 ton up.and 12 tractors commenced plowing the streets und sidewalks, following the same route as the.spreaders.When they had been out a while, 1f more machines were dispatched to either load the snow onto a host of trucks or to cast it onto nearby lawns, The operation was well under way.but it had many grueiing hours to go before the bone- weary men could call a halt on a successful fight to keep the Streets clear.During the next six days, men worked 15 to 17 hours at a stretch, with 4 or 5 hours off for needed sleep.and will be working still until well into tomorrow, During this Lime more than 1,500 arrived, they discovered fires raging in the ceilings of the first and second floors and immediately put them out.On inspection of the roof, however, they discovered that the flames had penetrated through and little could be done to prevent the roof's destruction.After two alarms and a constant playing of nine streams of water on the blaze, it was finally brought under control at five a.m.Most of the men had returned to the station by nine a.m., but a guard remained on the premises until noon, Wednesday when the police stationed one of their men at the scene.Chief Harper theorized that the Duplessis and his methods are regarded throughout the rest of Canada as something less than the apothe- xosis of ethical practice; and that Mr.Diefenbaker is mak- ‘ing a bad deal in selling a partnership to the redoubtable tactician from Three Rivers.The word from Tory headquarters here ig that Mr.Diefenbaker and his advisers feel they have the Maritimes sewed up tight; that they expect to take some seats in British Columbia from the Social Crediters; that they have high hopes of increasing their representation in Manitoba and even in Saskatchewan; and that they're not worried about Ontario, where Premier Frost is still the Medicine Man.Consequently, say the Tories, if they can knock off a few constituencies — say twenty-five or thirty — in Quebec, they'll be home free.When the election's over, they'll decide how best to take care of the pay-off to Mr.Du- ‘| plessis, whatever it may be.In all this smoke-filled- room manoeuvring, George Marler's position is almost unique.He is held in high esteem by Mr.Duplessis, who never seriously opposed Mr, Marler during the latter's sue- cessful efforts to get elected to the provincial legislature.It can be assumed, therefore, that the Quebec premier won't include Mr.Marler among the candidates against whom the NU-PC combined operation is directing its shock troops.THE seclusion of our private family room lessens it is more important that He looked round about on them with anger for the hardness of their hearts than that St.Paul was let down from the wall of Damascus in a basket.things of equal importance.Wey But in choosing out our texts we should be careful to keep in mind that Scripture is a unity, and we are not at liberty to pick and choose in order Lo support our own particular theories about salvation.For exan:ple, Luther so emphasized ‘faith’ that he considered the Enistle of James “a right strawy Epistle.” So too the Anglican tends to lay so great an emphasis on the Church and the Ministry that he neglects other UNITED CALVARY CHURCH Dorchester Street at Greene Ave.Westmount Minister: Rev.Charles R.Plaskett 11:00 a.m.Yout) service, Scouts and Cubs, CGIT and Explorers.7:30 p.m.Speaker.MR.DONALD KNIGHT, student minister, LIFE ANL LENT SERVICES Wed.Feb.26th, 8 p.m, Wesley United Clurch, Speaker: Rev.Ernest %.Campbell, “ CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH UNITARIAN Sherbrooke St.at Simpson Rev.Angus Cameron, Minister Donitld Mackey, Organist and director of Music.~ Sunday, 1ebruary 23rd 11:00 a.m.Sermon Subiect: “The Friendly Church” Church School and Kindergarten in Unitarian Fouse, 4421 Simpson Strect.at 11:00 am.11:00 a.m.“THIS AMAZING JESUS” Christ 7:30 p.m.ST.JAMES UNITED CHURCH 463 ST.CATHERINE ST.WEST REV.NORMAN RAWSON, Rev.B.B.Brown.B.D., Asst.Minister Rev.Nettie 1, J.Wilson, Rev.William D.F.Morris, B.A, Gifford Mitchell, B.A., B.Mus., Organist and Choirmaster Sermon Subject: This is the first in the series of morning Lenten studies on the life and times of Reverend Norman Rawson at both services MARTIN LUTHER FILM This is one of the finest religious films in existence.Protestants who would like to review the beginnings of their faith should see this film.Non-Protestants will find it a well of corrective information 9:00 p.m.Young Peoples Fellowship Hours Convenient to Hotels Minister B.A, BD.Asst.Minister Asst.Minister Organist and Choir Director: Alice Brown, A.Mus, (McGill) DOMINION-DOUGLAS Vastmount Blvd.& Lansdowne Ave Ministers: Rev A.Lloyd Smith, M.A.DD Rev.Eric A.Mcliwain, B.A.10:00 a.m.Intermediate -& Senior School.11:00 am.Crib Corner, Nursery.Kindergarten, Primary & Junior Departments.ANNUAI, CHURCH PARADE of Scouts, Guides, Cubs & Brov aies Rev.Eric Mellwain “Scout's Honour" Class lor Church Membership 7:30 pom.Dr.Lloyd Smith ‘A Pressing, Personal Problem” 8:45 pm.Young Peopl.’s Union.Organist and Choirmaster.Mr.John Robb, Mus, Bae.11:00 a.m.3:00 p.m.LIFE and LENT SERVICE Wed.Fab.26, 8:00 p.m.WESLEY CHURCH REV.ERNEST T.CAMPBELL “LOVE'S LAST WORD" ;T.ANDREW'S CHURCH WESTMOUNT 101 Cote St.Antoine Road (near Argyle Avenue) MINISTERS Rev D.M.Grant, BA, D.N Rev R W Mumfora B.A nn Mr.Eric, J.Adams, Bac.Mus, R.ANM.,, A.R.C.M.11:00 a.m.BOY SCOUT — GIRL GUID SERVICE.Sermon by Rev.R.W.Mumford.Subject : “PREPARED FOR SERVICE” 7:30 p.m.Dr, Grant, “THE LANGUAGE OF COLOUR.” 11:09 a.m.Mission Band, 11:00 a.m.Church School.10.00 a.m.Intermediates & Seniors.6:30 p.m.Communicants’ Class.LIFE AND LENT SERVICE Wesley Church Wednesday 8:00 p.m.— Speaker: Dr, E, T.Campbell, York, Pa.Subject: LENTEN SERVICE Wednesday, February 26, 8:00 p.m.DR.JOHN SHORT, ST.GEORGE'S UNITED CHURCH, TORONTO “THE HUMAN TOUCH” 6:15 p.m.Lenten Supper for all who care to send in their names to the Church Office by noon on the 25th.WESTMOUNT PARK-EMMANUEL Cor.Larsdowne & Western Ave) Minister: Rev.Callum Thompson, B.A.B.D Mr.Wayne Ridden — Director Music.HOLY COMMUNION 11:00 am.and 7:30 p.The Sacrament of the Supper.Mr.Riddell will present an organ recital] from 7:10 to 7:30 p.n.with Anne Savage as soprano soloist, m.Lord's “LIFE AND LENT” SERVICES in Wesley Church February 26th at 8 p.m.Speaker: Rev.Ernest T.Campbell, York, enn.need to preserve what St.Paul calls “the proportion of faith.” That does not mean that every Bible writer gives us a full picture of salvation; John feit that it should begin at the very beginning of things; while Mark was content to begin with the Ministry of John the Baptist.I am going to suggest then that we try a course of Bible reading, taking one man's idea of salvation, not in little texis but in large sections.And because Mark is the most compact of the Gospels I am going to outline Mark's scheme in the form of a great drama — an action — in which God Himself in the Person of His Son is the chief Actor.Some may be reatly to read St.Mark with me, to see in the Gospel the greatest of the Works of God, and.the reaction of men to these works.SYNAGOGUES SHAAR HASHOMAYiM 450 Kensington Avenue, Westmount, Que.Rabbi Wilfred Shuchat Hazzan Nathan Mendelson Rev.J.J.Fromm THE SABBATH SEDRA TERUMAH Friday Evening, February- 21st 5:05 Candle Lighting, 5:15 p.m.Friday Evening Service.SABBATH SERVICES 9:00 am.Preiiminarr Service, Scriptural Readings: Torah: Exodus, .25, v.1 - Ch.27, 19.Prophets: I Kings, Ca.5, v.26 - Ch.6 v.13 5:15 p.m.Afternoon Service.5:55 p.m.Evening Service.Weekday “Services: 8:45 a.m.Sunday Moning Service.5:25 p.m.Sunday Afternoon Service.Weekdavs: 7:30 a.m.Morning Service.5:25 pan.Afternoon “Service.6:00 p.m.Evening Service.Next Friday Evening: 5:15 pm.Candle Lighting, 5:25 p.m.Friday Evening Service.TEMPLE EMANU-EL 4100 Sherbrooke Street West Westmount, Montreal Or.Harry J.Stern, Rabbi Otto O.Staeren, Cantor F.L.Mc- wearon, Organist and Choir Master: Miles Wisenthal, M.A., Educational Assistant.Interfaith Sabbath In Observance Of International Brotherhood Month Friday evening, February 21st at 8:15 o'clock, ddress by Rev, Dr.Stanley B.Frost, Dean, Faculty Divinity, McGill University on ‘’Hope In The Modern World.’ Dr.Harry J Stern will officiate.Associated with the Temple choir will be the Choir of The Church of The Messiah in the musical program of the se:r- vice, Saturday morning, February 22nd at 11: :30 o'clock, sermonetie - “Have We Not All On.Father?" based on Haftoralh portion, ONEG SHABBAT AND RECEPTION After Divine Service this Friday evening, a reception will be held in the nw social hall to which all wore shippers are cordially invited.DAILY SERVICES Monday through Thursday evenings ‘at 5:45 p.m.Sunday mornings at 10:15 a.m.These services are now held in the new chapel.SCHOOL FOR ADULTS Monday evening, February 24th at-8 o'clock.Regular classes will lake place.At 8:45 o'clock, the closing exercises of the 30th season of the school will take place.RELIGIOUS SCHOOL High School and Confirmation Departments Saturday morrings at 9:45 o'clock;
