Great Days Of The Cinema BRYNNER With The Baleful Glow Of An Awakening Volcano The man Hollywood calls irresistible to women .head shaven, cigarette poised, eyes brooding.Brynner as the plotting General Bunin — ‘“‘a wiry, sometimes brutal, unrelenting man.” / THE WESTMOUNT EXAMINER, FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1957 The Love Scene across an empty room / Tan has never been a love scene quite like it before — and there never will be again unless these two stars decide to repeat it.For only a woman with her deep feelings and only a man with his instinctive sense of timing could have brought such an unlikely moment to life. The scene is an empty room. The time is two o'clock in the morning, Through one of the doors, out of sight of the audience, Ingrid Bergman is lying on her bed.She is a little tipsy from too much champagne."Her heart is full of emotions she doesn’t quite understand, and her head is full of mischief. She lies there, letting the last champagne bubbles ‘sparkle inside her mind, and listens.Suddenly she hears Yul Brynner come into the empty anteroom. He walks swiftly across it to his own doorway. There he pauses, and looks across to Bergman’s room, Bergman knows he is angry — with ‘her. And yet her instinct tells her that, though her actions of that evening have infuriated him, they have also aroused a different kind of emotion inside him.Beguiling E is a wiry, sometimes brutal, unrelenting man, and normally she would not dare to try to get inside his defences and attack his heart. But the champagne has made her bold.Through that door, inside the room you cannot see, you hear her stirring. And, all at once, those seductive Scandinavian tones I haven't heard for such a long time come through the open door — and Bergman begins the gamble of her life .beguiling the anger and frustration out of Brynner's mind and replacing it with something altogether sweeter. For five minutes, across the dead darkness of that empty room, you then listen to the love scene of the year, Bergman.talks.You do not I've not seen “anything better for years By Leonard Mosley Film : Anastasia Theatre : Westmount see her.Brynner stands and listens. And, in the pauses in between the words, you can almost hear the beating of two hearts .Expert T memorable scene was, for me, the most touching moment of this easy, Sooert, and surprisingly moving film.It is a screen version, as you will no doubt ‘know, of the theatre and TV play about a tortured and mysterious girl who falls into the hands of a trio of Russian confidence men.She has an hallucination that she is one of the daughters of the Czar of Russia who managed to escape after the Reds murdered the rest of her family. The tricksters, led by Brynner, take her in hand. They are not interested in whether she is genuine or not, but only in deceiving their fellow emigrés into believing that she is.For, if they do so, then she can collect the Czar's fortune deposited with the Bank of England.Brynner watches her, brooding in the background, wondering .and then, after that scene across the empty room, increasingly aware that what he wants most in life is not to prove this girl an archduchess, but to help her to find her own identity., Intense ERGMAN has never acted more intensely nor more movingly. The sound of her enchanting voice brought back the great days of the cinema. And always with her, giving off the baleful glow of an awakening volcano, is Yul Brynner.Even across an empty room, here are two stars who can make the screen erupt.FOOTNOTE: Another Anastasia film was privately shown in London recently. It was made in Germany, is called “Is Anna Anderson Anastasia ?” and stars Lilli Palmer.Miss Palmer is not, unfortunately, a Bergman. And the film doesn't contain a Yul Brynner either. Both Stars Win Academy Awards EDITOR'S NOTE: — our prediction of February 28th, proved to be correct Wednesday night regarding Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner, as each received an Oscar as “Best Actress of the Year,” and “Best Actor,” at the colorful ceremonies held annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.Miss Bergman for her great work in “Anastasia,” which is currently showing at the Westmount United Theatre, and although Brynner’s Oscar was for his work in “The King and I,” it might well have been for his equally outstanding performance as Miss Bergman's co-star in “Anastasia.” In any case we cannot recommend Westmount's Only Hospital Faced With Closing If Drive Fails Eighty-six years of service to the community, the only hospital in Westmount is threatened with closing by mounting operating costs.Monday the Reddy Memorial Hospital, the 140-bed institution of mercy at 4039 Tupper street, is launching an appeal for $250,000 as a maintenance fund.If the appeal fails, there is grave danger that the hospital must close its doors.Hence the slogan for the campaign, “Save the Reddy.” Since it was founded in 1871, the Reddy Memorial has never denied aid to the sick, regardless of race, creed or ability to pay.Staff members, as well as patients, are of varying religions and races, and many of the internes are from overseas. One of the chief reasons for the plight is its very large percentage of public patients, many of them indigent. These occupy 47 beds. The hospital incurred a $40,000 deficit through treatment of indigent patients in 1956.The moving of the nearby Western division of the Montreal General Hospital to the new MGH building on the mountainside threw new burdens on the Reddy, which since that time has had to cope with more cases from the immediate neighborhood. The Reddy suffers from the fact that it is not endowed, depending instead on fees paid by patients, donations, government grants, ete., sources which have not kept pace with mounting costs.Workers who would like to help will be welcome.Generous reception of the workers in the campaign for funds is imperative. When Spring Begins First Day of Spring and First Spring Day Not Same Thing Spring will come, sooner or later. The American writer Henry Van Dyke, born in 1852, noted that the first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. If you figure it’s been a long winter, the fact is that spring this year began when the sun entered Aries at 4.17 p.m, eastern standard time last Wednesday, March 20.The weather did not change at that minute, of course, and some parts of this broad country may be chilled in a ‘wintry atmosphere while others 2 are gnioying the new warmth. But nothing is mors sure than the change of seasons, and the birds are well aware of this, even if they don’t read the, - weather forecasts. The different flocks and species, fol” lowing a schedule they have observed for centuries, have been preparing for the annual northward migration in places far to the south — in the open spaces of South America, and forests of Central America, the warm-winter areas of the southern United States. One of the first migrants to reach its summer breeding areas is the robin.Syre, a few robins spend the winter in Canada, .and so do some other birds, but these are the exceptions.A well-trained robin will go south for the winter and return north when the temperature reaches a steady 35 degrees or better. It’s not the temperature, however, that spurs the robins’ return. The National Geographic Society says the robins time their arrival with the return of the earth-, worms. All winter the worms have hidden below the frost line, and as the ground thaws, they come to the surface. The robins are there to meet them.Other bird species time their migration to fit the growth of new vegetation.Nature’s timetable has the trees bursting into bud and leaves beginning to grow, insects are hatched to eat the leaves and birds fly up to eat the insects.Spectacular spring migrations — thousands of birds in a single flock — are haphazard occurrences, due to the changeable spring weather. They seize the chance of a bright warm day in the midst of cool or stormy periods. But they all know where they're going, and they know the winter's over.50th Year of Flight Public Asked To Check Wording For Plaque It is hoped that the plaque to mark the site of the first International Air Meeting to be held in Canada, at Lakeside Heights in 1910, will be ready to be unveiled for the beginning of the Anniversary of Canada’s Fiftieth Year Of Flight. The first flight in Canada was made in February 1909 by the Hon.J.A.D.McCurdy and celebrations to mark the Fiftieth Anniversary of this event are being planned to begin in June 1958.It has been suggested that the unveiling of the plague, monument, or marker at Lakeside Heights would be a fitting way to begin these anniversary activities. The following wording for such a plague has been suggested: “THIS PLAQUE marks the site of the First International Air Meeting held in Canada from June 25 to July 4, 1910, The Hon.J.A.McCurdy, the first Canadian to fly, also made the first flight in the Province of Quebec from this site on June 24, 1910, while Count Jacques de Lesseps made his historic flight over Montreal on July 2, 1910.Other aviators taking part included Walter Brookins, Cromwell Dixon, Frank F.Coffyn, Ralph Johnston, Roy Knabenshue, Duval Lachapelle, and Paul Miltgen.” While investigations have been made to ascertain that the above lines are factual, it is possible that a mistake has been made or that there may be an omission.Any readers knowing of any mistakes or omissions are asked to contact the temptation dealt with Our Lord’s relationship with material things.“Turn these stones into bread” was temptation to take the things of the world, food, clothing, shelter, for one's sole use.The second temptation — “All these things will I give Thee, if Thou wilt fall down and worship me.” — brings us into the field of human relationships. The kingdoms of the world are kingdoms of men.The devil offered Our Lord dominion over all men, Obviously that was a perfectly right thing, for the kingdoms of this world are to become the kingdoms of Our Lord, and of His Christ, but the time was not yet, and the condition attached was an impossible one from His point of view. When we go back to the creation we find that man was given dominion over nature, but not over his fellow-man.We have one Lord and Master. One of the sins of man from the beginning has been to seek lordship over as many men as possible. There are degrees of honour amongst men, but not one of them is absolute. They are rights and ranks conferred by custom or inheritance or election, but with them the man in the superior place is still subject to God, and the man in the inferior place is still a free man, Our Lord, on the other hand, has an absolute lordship, for “I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son Our Lord,” but it is a iordship derived from God alone. When the devil offered Him “all the kingdoms of the world” he was offering something to which he had no real right, He claimed the right to confer, but actually he himself was a usurper. He had stolen God's place.: Further, the devil offered a condition which Our Lord could not fulfil without denying God, the Ruler of the Universe. His answer made this perfectly clear: “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.” He stood there between God and man and on the one hand He refused to deny God, and on the other hand He refused to accept dominion over man.It is at that point that Our Lord is our example, and our reminder that we fail in our relationships with the world of man.We lust after power. We seek dominion over a little group, then over a larger group. And in our desire for power we are perfectly ready to deny God by doing something that is contrary to God's will. When we find ourselves in that position there is only one security for us; that is, to remember Our Lord's readiness to serve rather than to rule, and to set Him before us as our example.By the Way Melisande writes: Nothing could be smarter than the new backless evening macintosh ‘or a wet spring. It is of bottle- green grosette with a high, lemon-shaped, stand - back waist, half-length diamanté sleeves, curdled at the edges with bell-tout fromagerie, and snaffered to a point at the back. The hip-line is emphasised by a full-blown turn-over of passe-partout in dog’s-breath grey, with a filching of hand- sewn fritterwork on the bas- que-line, The whole gives an effect of crisp sophistication which is emphasised by the drop-skirting of wattled bonè- paste-blue goudonnerie. The Strabismus Rocket If guided rocket missiles continue to run wild, as has happened twice in the U.3, someone will have to invent 2 guided rocket which will find and destroy stray guided rockets. And so on.By that time the air will be so full of things that nobody will know which are coming and which Canada’s most popular hobby.More and more people, particularly young people, are discovering the pleasure and entertainment which it provides.Accordingly, the West- mount Junior Stamp Club is sponsoring this column to help the boys and girls who already have collections, to encourage beginners and to attract those who have not yet considered taking up stamp collecting.Perhaps the best way to begin would be to talk generally about how to start a collection. Here are a few suggestions which might prove helpful: Although each individual manages his own collection in his own way.necessary accessories are an album, hinges and some stamps.Stamps should always be placed in the album by means of hinges. If they are glued or attached with cellophane tape, they will be ruined and worthless.Hints on how to use the hinges are usually included on the back of the package in which they come.An album of price and quality to suit individual taste is readily available in any stamp shop or department store.Changes and improvements in the album are often made as one progresses. The most important question of how to find stamps is a fascinating story in itself; it will be considered next week.Meanwhile, remember that W.J.S.C.meetings are held each Thursday evening from 7 to 8 o’clock in the Oak Room of Victoria Hall, Westmount.Membership is free and boys and girls from all over Montreal are welcome, On March 28 an auction is to be held and, as usual, there will be ample time for trading. We'll be looking for you.Margaret Ward.Cape Breton may be the oldest name of British Columbia, has suggested that Canadian schools scrap the present grade system of school organization and replace it by grouping. The suggestion appeared in a provocative article published in a recent issue of Saturday Night. In two paragraphs this is the gist of Dr.Scarfe’s proposal: “It is clear :hat some children grow faster and bigger than others. It is equally true that some children’ learn faster than others, Thus the alternative way of dividing children in a school is into longitudinal streams of similarly able or equally fast and compatible groups.“We call this ‘ability grouping’ or streaming.Barly in school life those of a particular age group who are fast learners or clever are placed in a separate group, class or even school, and allowed to progress as fast as they can through the work normally set for twelve years of schooling. They will probably complete it all in ten years or less. Those who are average are placed in another group who, going as fast as they can, will complete the twelve ‘years in approximately twelve years. The slow learners are again separated into groups of similar capacity and they tackle the twelve years’ work as fast as they can take it, They will probably need fourteen or fifteen years, but they will do the work thoroughly; they will understand it and probably like it.They may, however, not wish to persist beyond twelve years or beyond the present ninth grade of study.” On the surface the scheme appears to have a great deal to commend. But the segregation of children into groups is fraught with many difficulties, not the least of which is the opposition of those parents whose offspring are consigned to the below average or average groups.Other difficulties are of an administrative nature. For best results it is “streaming” or ability important that both -above average classes be reduced considerably in numbers. In today’s overcrowded schools it is usually impossible to keep classes small. The parts of Dr.Scarfe's article to which I objected were his outspoken criticisms of what is being done in the schools today.Much of this criticism appears to be based on sheer ignorance and is marred by unsubstantiated generalizations of a type that a man with Dr.Scarfe's academic background should long since have learned to shun.He writes, “It has been shown by experiment that below-aver- age children do better mentally and normally when taught separately than when with a heterogeneous group,” but does not cite one — not even one — research study to back up his claim. There are degrees of “below average” and in Montreal Protestant schools attempts are being made in the elementary schools to place those children who are considerably below average in special classes, In the high schools, the non-academic student is directed into the practical course. But the number of students so affected is small‘ and there are many educators who believe that the social values of relatively heterogeneous groups far outweigh any disadvantages.Another ract which Dr.Scarfe chooses to ignore is that in the elementary classes of the modern school, students within a class are grouped for instruction in such basic subjects as reading and arithmetic. In the high school students tend to segregate themselves by choosing those - True Kindred Names .Whist Committee The Westmount Conclave No.4, Order of True Kindred will hold their Annual Spring Whist Party in St.Stephen’s Church Hall, corner of Atwater and Dor- ever doubt that gifted children progress more satisfactorily when taught in separate groups of classes.” It is a statement that would be more intelligible if we knew what the good doctor meant by the words “few” and “gifted”, Do Not Wait Too Long ! annual meeting of the United Church Homes for Elderly ladies took place on Thursday in Cheney Hall, Erskine-American Churchman of the Board presided.Mrs.Gordon McKay, Chair- Mrs.W.T.Shields, accompanied by Mrs.Noel Hardy was guest soloist and the tea hostesses were Mrs.C.R.Plaskett and Mrs.K.G.Mac- fat |Millan assisted by members rs.McKay in addressing the meeting said ‘elderly women who make the tremendous adjustment to life in a home deserve more than the primary needs of the aged, good food, shelter, gracious and peaceful ving.‘ In an appeal to the Homes board to “carry through, caring for them when they are sick, rather than sending them to hospitals or fiursing homes,” Mrs.McKay noted the large number of removals, and criticized the attitude of “false complacen :y.” “Every other Home or Institution on this island has recognized the imperative need for this nursing care and is doing something about it.Let us explore ways and means of finishing work well started,” she L-83 said.McKay admired the refurnishing of a r om in the Pine Avenue Home, carried out in memory of the late Miss M.Wright, a delegate to the Homes’ board, who died recently.Extensive Red Cross work by the residents of the two homes was cited. The Red Cross Group at the Pine Avenue Home made 927 diapers and 1,942 swabs.Ladies at Dun-edin Home knitted and sewed 160 pairs of goakers and 84 pairs of socks, and helped.the Cancer Group at the Town Hall. The total of 43 ladies, aged 68 to 90 years were looked after at Dun-edin, reported Superintendent Miss Gardiner.Vacancies were filled to bring the Pine Avenue Home total to is, aged Identical Twin Duo-Pianists BY FRANCES GOLTMAN Ernest and Miles Mauney.1dentical twin duo-pianists cave the final concert last evening of the Notre Dame de Grace Community Concerts Series in Loyola Auditorium. These two gentlemen are not only identical in looks but have identical exceptional talent at the two keyboards.Everyone left the hall in happy mood expressing delight over the wonderful concert. The twin pranists offered a program of extremely wide variety and immediately established that they are in the top notch class. The concert began with a Bach Chorale Prelude followed by an exquisite performance of the celebrated Scherzo from À - Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn arranged for two pianos by Isador Philipp.Their rendition was reminiscent of The First Piano Quartet, the lightness and precision was faultless.A poetic Notturno by Respighi- Guenther came next and Allegro Non Troppo from Sonata in F minor opus 34 by Brahms showed the German master’s chordal eloquence with sparkling technical facility. For their second group the Mauney twins offered a Scriabin Fantasy that was both diabolical and soothing by contrast.Le Re- veur by Arensky did not appeal to us.The Perpetual Motion by Weber was a revelation to the audience since it was played in unison with such perfect precision the ensemble seemed like a single instrument with great sonority.Memories of Childhood by Pinto, five short numbers heard frequently were played in dazzling style and The Maiden And The Nightingale by Granadas was a well chosen contrast.Dukas’ Sorcerer's Apprentice was given an exciting rendition, The last group included a Bolero Moderne by Morton Gould, a rhythmic gem.A Highlander number arranged by Ray Koos came next and the Flight of The Bumble Bee by Rimsky-Korsa- koff captivated the audience. It was one of the many highlights of the concert.of the Board.66 to 86, cared for, according to Superintendent Miss Philip. Both superintendents expressed gratitude for cars sent to take James’ Church, and those from Dun-edin to Montreal West Church.Chriftmas was made enjoyable for the elderly ladies Church, which also pays taxes and insurance, moderate manth- ly board from the guests, and donations.Income for the Pine Avenue Home was $10,195.62, disbursements $10,071.Income by generous donations of gifts and foods from church groups, clubs, Red Cross and merchants.A new television set was bought for the Pine Avenue Home through donations. The larger is claimed to be a help to those whose sight is failing. Both Homes report enthusiastic television audiences each evening. The two Homes installed new fire systems in 1956, and fire drills held regularly.“The ladies are at the fire escapes in three minutes, which we think is won- Mr.Charles Norris, Building Consultant.“ derful for their age,” said Miss Gardiner.SOURCE OF INCOME Income for the Homes comes + from three sources, Mrs.C.B.Parsons, treasurer, told the K 830 Richmond Square.Contagious diseases nave all but disappeared from recent local mortality tables and infant all-time low of 29 deaths per 1,000 live births, Dr.Benjamin said. The greatest hazards facing young children now are accidents in and around the home, almost all of which could have been foreseen and prevented. The only solution to the problem is an intensified accident prevention campaign aimed at parents and others who are responsible for children’s safety.Of the three deaths among pre-school children known to Child Health clinics this year, two were accidental, Dr.Benjamin pointed out.Statistics for the year showed that 4,681 individuals were under care.Clinics, both medical and dental, numbered 689, at which total attendance was 14,- 815.Service was extended to social agencies in the community caring for children and families, and recreation agencies with vacation camp programs.Immunization against communicable disease was a major concern and almost all the children who had received initial’ inoculations of Salk Vaccine were rounded up for ‘the final shot.Mental Health Program Miss Marjorie Milligan, director of the Child Health Association, reported that a psychiatrist will be provided through the Mental Hygiene Institute ‘three times a month to continue the mental health program first started in 1932.The psychiatrist will be available for consultation on special cases and for continuing staff education.Home visiting has been greatly accelerated within the year, Miss Milligan reported, Nurses MARCEL VINCENT, 351 Lans- downe Ave, Westmount, who has been appointed plant manager for the Bell Telephone Company's eastern ares, effect-_ fve March 15.A native of Montreal and graduate of the University of Montreal, Mr.Vineent has been with the Bell company since 1927 and has served in Ottawa and Quebec City as well ‘as Montreal.During the Second World War he served with the Royal Canadian Navy, holding the rank of Heutenant-commander at war’s end.Mr.Vincent, who was traffic manager for eastern area at the time of his new appointment, will continue to make his headquarters in Montreal.Dr.B.Benjamin Emphasizes Danger Of Accidents To Pre-school Children The pre-school child is in deadly danger because of preventable accidents which now account for more fatalities than any other cause, Dr.Ben Benjamin, associate medical director of the Child Health Association, said recently at the annual meeting of the Red Feather service. The meeting took place at the Chandler Health Centre, mortality has diminished to an’ meeting: a monthly grant from the Board of Evangelism, and Social -Service of the United residents to church, those from the Pine Avenue Home to St.for Dun-edin was $22,245.90, and become acquainted with the total health picture of the entire family and are able to extend individual care to people who.do not respond to group treatment. The lack of adequate housing for low-income families has become increasingly apparent as nurses have gone on their rounds, she said.Although the general level of employment and income has been good, high rents and scarcity of decent dwellings has remained a major problem.Linked to this is the shrinking area of safe play space for children. This fact is closely allied to disbursements $20,619.66.Dona~ tions for 1858 totalled $5,829, of this.amount $5,000 came from an interested friend for building extension.OFFICERS FOR 1957 Delegates appointed by the Woman's Association of the United Churches: Calvary — Mrs.À.Robinson, Mrs.F.N.Stephen; Westmount Park-Emmanuel — Mrs.F.C.Brown, Miss
