Last month there appeared in| "a news service story from.,Toronto a story of the Mormon Elders basketball team, It brought to mind a basketball season prior to the war wlien we played the game in the old Montreal Church league.The Mormons.had a team and they were fine players.They played it hard all the way.Personal fouls, in those days was four, they are now five but the Mormon team never came up with many.’ *% LA # The Toronto story went on to say that the Mormon boys, if they knocked one of their opponent down to the floor, they help him up to his feet.This we can say is true.The Mormons were playing the Toronto Tri- Bells and lost only in the last minute of play, 50-49.The team was coached by Solon Low, Social Credit Party Leader.Mr.Low has the name of.Brother although he is the coach and the players are called elders.æ ¥ » NOYHER STRANGE note in the story was to the surprise of the janitor where the team practice, that the Mormons dressing room is cleaned up after each practice.That makes me think of the times we saw football players, who leave everything at their feet and leave some other ‘Joe’ do the job of hanging up their clothes and cleaning up.There are some hockey teams today that get the players to pack’ their own backs, but they are few and far between.+ # * The Mormon, when they run into tough players, never retaliate, but draw the referee’s attention to the fact that the player is playing it rough.Being religious men, they don't smoke nor do they drink.They donate their time ‘to the church, depending on their parents or interested groups to support them with living expenses, Some of the members are married and depend on their wives who have jobs.% * + * Other teams coukl .learn plenty from the Mormons.Of course there are some who, as they read this column, will say that they are fools to let any one in sport hurt them and ' then forgive them in à sort of & way.For one thing there would be more playing the game, whatever it might be, if more teams and their players used the çode of the Mormons.Perhaps that would make sport too soft, and especially in the pro ranks, it would never pay off, but in amateur it would be worth the try.Supple, Spurgeon Lo To Fight, Jan.28 Tiger Pat Supple of Ville Emard, Canadian bantamweight champion, gets the stiffest test - Of his career on January 28th at La Tour, in Quebec City, when RCAF, he faces veteran Jackie Spurgeon ‘in a bantamweiglit 10‘ rounder;
