world with new types of medicine being brought out almost daily for hospital use,” said Mr.Spiers, ‘doctors often may have a patient whom they think a new drug will help.They want it, not tomorrow, but right then.It is in those circumstances that the hospital turns to its supplier for advice, assistant and service and the supplier thus becomes a consultant and counsel.” Mr.Spiers éxplained that it would be impractical and expensive for hospitals to deal directly with drug-manufacturers.The presence of the retail supplier was almost absolutely indispensable.“By selling through the dealer, the manufacturer gets his product to the consumer at the lowest possible cost.The consumer benefits from this too since the dealer can deliver goods promptly, and time in the hospital means money and lives.” Before Mr.Splers' speech, Brian Martin, Westmount Rotary's youthful] delegate to “Adventure in Citizenship” sponsored by Ottawa Rotary, gave a report on his trip.Brian, a pupil of St.Leo’s school, spent three.days in the Federal capital with many other boys and girls from across Canada.In the chair for the meeting was club president, Ernest Metzger, who succeeds Mr.Hughes as treasurer.Peter Adamac was named secretary.The club members also elected seven directors at the final meeting of the 1955-56 season held at the hospital last Thursday.Headed by the immediate past president, Mr, Ramsay, other directors of the group for the ensuing year are: Glyn Hilton, Art Spears, Ron Morie, Ralph Hogan Ed Campan and Les Osmond.In reviewing the year's past activities, it was pointed out that the club raised several hundred dollars for the Queen Eli- zageth Hospital and assisted ‘:n the annual financial campaign of the they are very strong in their approval of the Golden Rule and of the Sermon on the Mount; they even say that if the world guided itsef by those teachings our economic and social troubles would come to an end, and even our international problems.It is when we come to the more personal sayings like “Come unto me,” and “No man cometh unto the Father but by me,” that they object to the tone of personal authority.They would be prepared to accept the miracles of healing, because they can be parallelled in our own day.But the Feeding of the Five Thousand cannot be compared explained away.> with anything modern, so it must be This kind of criticism appeals to the modern mind with its scientific outlook, which will accept only what it can verify by experiment.Unique, unrepeatable events have no place in its scheme of things.It is a very old state of mind which has appeared in every stage of the Church’s history It appeared in the City of Colossae in St.Paul's lifetime; and still more clearly in the second and third centuries.It was due to the attempt of perfectly sincere Christians to accommodate the teaching of the Church to the science and philo- sorhy of the day.That science and philosophy died but the teaching of the Church remained.That state of mind appeared again in the Middle Ages and the Schoolmen tried to interpret the Gospel in terms of the philosophy of Aristotle, with the result that there came a rebellion against the old scholasticism, and a restoration of the Scriptures against the philosophy of the day.We get it in the work of John Colet who founded St.Paul's School in London early in the sixteenth century because “he could hardly attend to anything else but the destruction of that Idol of Ignorance, the cobweb Divinity of the schools, and to exalt the Scriptures and Jesus Christ in its room.” The attempt at accommodation was made again in the eighteenth century The philo- sorhers of the day tried to bring Christian teaching into harmony with a philosophy which we would not accept today.But the teaching remained.Again in the nineteenth century the scholars tried to write the Life of Christ UNITARIAN CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH UNITARIAN Sherbrooke St.at Simpson Minister: Rev.Angus Cameron, B.A, B.D.Sunday, May 27th 11:00 a.ni.Sermon Subject: “Living ‘As If” Donald Mackey, Organist and Director of Music The Church School anid Kindergarten + on the assumptions of the science of the day that “miracles do not ‘happen,” and therefore the miraculous must be excluded from the Life of Christ.Those Lives of Christ of the nineteenth century are seldom read today but their influence persists;
