that they had initiated a long-term policy to help the East- ein peoples to help themseles; and if millions died of starvation in lhe meantime it was just tco bad.Meanwhile our wheat lay on the ground and the railways went idle, and so did the railway workers. We started a recession in our own country because we guarded our so-called wealth. And the Minister of Agriculture a couple of months ago replied to the Church's criticism that he understood that India was a wealthy country and could afford to buy its own food; 4 by MARTY GOODMAN @ THE HIGH SCHOOL sports setup in Mentreal may “ find favor with maÿy, but to those who regard it with an eye for talent, there ts-a void rivalled only by that of the Grand Canyon. It has good organization, good participa - tion, and poor coaching.….A High school sports are usually viewed with.an eye to the | character it produces in the participant, and this is only right.Bit, there is also something to be said for developing good athletes, and in most sports this development is noticeably .lacking.‘Nowhere can a better example be found than in the “athletfe success gained by MoGill University in the ‘past decade. The back- = bone of the college's football teams have come from out of town; the, game story cañ be told regarding both basketball and hockey.Somewhere along the line Quebec students are dropping behind their Ontario counterparts, so “that when they enter college.one is a far superior athlete to the other. There is such a pool of football talent coming up from Ontario high schols - “that colleges there invariably come up with solid teams.Cer- + tainly there is never a long period of gridifon mediocrity.Experts are agreed that the Vasie- difference between the calibre of athlete produced in Quebec and Ontario high schools lies in their superior coaching. On the average, the youth of both prov- incés is granted equal athletic ability. There‘ is little marked change until the high school stage, when a more concentrated program tends to make better athletes of the Ontario citizens.Larry Sullivan, new head football coach at McGill, claims there is enough talent in Ontario to supply all the schools in the Intercollegiate League.McGill lacks the attraction to bring many of them here, he says, mainly due to a poor job of public relations. But if they could be convinced of McGills merits, he is sure he .could turn out teams on a par with either Western, Toronto or Queens.‘ - “ Basketball mentor Joe Anderson is also faced with a lack ‘of material. Many agree he is one of the best hoop coaches in Canada. He has had experience, was a star player himself, and possesses the ability to handle a team. But in recent years he has been forced to pit three or four good men against nine or 10 from other schools. He too agrees that there is enough court talent available in Ontario to supply all schools, but that instead of being diffused, it is concentrated in one place. He has pointed at Toronto, where intramural teams rival the talent seen on intercollegiate squads. The same holds true in hockey, though here there is also stiff competition from the French colleges, of the University of Montreal and Laval. This lack of talent in the major sports has been a chronic illness ‘at McGill for some time now, and can be traced directiy"back to the high schools. There is enough talent in Ontario to supply the Quebec institution, but there should be no reason to have to go after it.Quebec produces enough” boys to supply its own colleges, English and French. The holdup is in the training received in high school.Too many schools consider the coaching posts as mere chores to be hoisted upon a teacher who can be lulled into accepting them.Few are serious about their coaching, though there is generally nQ lack of sincere interest. But there is a severe lack of knowledge about the position.Too few high school coaches know their games from long personal contact.Too few have any basic ideas about the science of the game, or a knowledge of fundamentals used.e Instead there is a tendency towards teaching the students from a “How to Play Better Football” book, and “Basketball Simplified”.Few coaches realize the importance of teaching fundamentals, and even less have the ability or knowledge. The job of coaching high school students, on the whole, has become too much work, for which it seems there is little result. When the students start in at the college level, the professional physical education instructors they come in contact with are forced to stop progress on more advanced learning and teach many members of their teams the fundamentals of the game.It is not the lack of ability that separates the boys, but a lack of knowledge as how to best using this ability.Ontario colleges get the jump immediately because they can begin at more advanced training stages. With more and more science being incorporate inte sports, schools can ill afford the time to teach athletes the principles they are supposed to be well acquainted with.Westmount schools are fortunate in having a good staf£ here.Age and a small choice usually prevent the local schools from completely dominating the high school sports scene, but the instructors are rated as second to none here. But that is only one school, and students attending McGill range from all over the metropolis. This results in the first few being equal to any others on the collegiate - circle, but little bench strength is present.More "concentrated and better coaching is needed before this situation will change, Of great help would be coaching sessions by members of professional teams.Similar programs have raised considerably the quality of high school football on the prairies. Here it would no doubt produce the same result. There is no criticism levelled at the character of athletes produced ‘here; only the use they make of their ability.Until this deficiency is solved, there will be little difference in the overall situation as it stands today.- .Cw x, - TRE EXAMINER, .e Rams 2 WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1954 | —— Westmount Dumped 11-2 In Opening The Westmount High sennio By GORD WASSERMAN Grid hours of training on hot summery days paid- dividénds for the Westmount rugger club'Saturday-or a cold rainy winter-like afternoon.Superior stamina and an overwhelming strength in the scrum gave the Westmounters a convincing 9-0 win over their eross-town rivals the Montreal Barbarians.* To their credit the Barbs never ; gave up fighting but the relent-® less attacks of the Westies forwards and the loss -of two men during the second half was too: much for the black and whites.Earlier in the afternoon the Westmount second stringers defeated their Barbian counterparts - 9-3 in au exciting game, - Late Saturday night the provincial selectors annuonced the team to represent Quebec against Ontario in Toronto tomorrow. The team includes 10 Westmount boys, four from the Barbs and a solo representative from McGill University. The team to travel to the Queen City is as follows Mike Budd (McGill), John King, Al Goodings, Barry Ward and Sid Bloom (all from “the Bavbs), George Ewan, Bill McQueen, Geoff Jackson, Ronnie Ruthven, John McLaren.Joe O'Flaherty, Murdo Murchison, Dick Miller, Gerry Fotheringham and Donald Munro of Westmount.- Replacement Do Well There is a possibility that Westmount skipper George Ewan may have to stand down from the team because of a tooth infection. He was missing from the West- mount lineup Saturday which brought to five the total of regulars missing from the team fou last week's title. The replacements, however, all played stand- qut games.+ The West Hill field resembled a mud bath for the game but the strong Westmount forwards 'revelled in the heavy going and were in control for most of the game.Only at the start when the Barbarians came close to scoring did the newly formed squad really threaten. On this occasion a fine covering tackle bv John Mc- Laren prevent a score. The diminutive McLaren playing in the worst possible condition for a serum half gave a fine display both in attack and defence.H= should be a useful ran for the Quebec team to have around next i; Saturday.Disallow Convert .‘Westmount took the lead afte: a spectacular play. The Barbs were pressing near the Westmount 25 when Bill McQueen intercepted a pass, when tackled near the half: way line he passed on to winger |.Tom Park who out-paced the opposition to score under the” posts. The conversion attempt was disallowed.Shortly hefore half-time the blue-shirts went further ahead when big Ian Monroe who played a fine game in the first outing for the club in the second row plunged over from a loose maul -near the line.By half time the Barbarians were weakening and it looked as if the Westmounters might run away with it in the second canto But despite the loss of Blair Taylor and Joe Smyth through injury they kept their line intact until ten minutes from the end when a quick dash from the scrum by McLaren gave Ruthvan the chance to go over near the corner. With this conversion and an earlier penalty goal ‘attempt Ian Monroe was unlucky in hitting the woodwork.Conditions Poor Although’ the conditions were all against open play there Was much fine running in the game. The second half, however, developed into a battle between the rival packs. This gives ther Westmount squad their scond straight triumph over the Barbs this season. The teams will not meet again until November when with botn teams at full strength and perhaps on a drier field a good game should be seen.Four-Team Loop Starts Oct.16 By Cliff Faraworth The St.Laurent Intermediate Hockey League once again takes to the ice at the St.Laurent Arena this
