industry before the war were 85 million dollars a year.In 1947 they had risen to 260 million dollars.Out of the 500,000 made in a year at home nearly 400,000 are exported.Out of 250,000 commercial vehicles, 140,000 are sold overseas. Thus we in Britain are the world’s largest exporter of motor vehicles today, in exporting over 70% of our production.” Elaborating further on the British car market he claimed that England has sent 160,000 cars here since the war and that British Industry produces 3,000 cars a month as well as commercial vehicles, tractors, engines and accessories.Mr.Cooke delivered his interesting talk through a haze of cigar smoke.Rotarians deftly chewed the cigars which were passed out by .Frank Kenwood whose wife gave birth this week to her child from school for such trivial reasons as these builds up in him only a feeling that school, after all, can't be very important, Such a belief isn’t going to help him very much."1, Don’t picture the school to your child as a type of medieval prison in which a collection of sadistic beings do their best to make children unhappy.School should be a happy experience for the normal youngsters and he should be led to look forward to starting school — not dread it.2.Don't ridicule the school’s policy on any matter to your child even though you believe that a committee of patients in a mental hospital could do a better job of drawing up a series of sensible regulations.Such actions on your part will only lead to your child's developing into a discipline problem in school.3.Don't keep telling your child how intelligent he is — or how stupid he is.The first will make him such an insufferable egotist that it will be a virtual impossibility to teach him anything. The second ‘will give him such a feeling of inferiority that he will be too prone to give up when con-, fronted with a problem or a job to do.4.Don't come to the school when it is in session and expect the teacher to leave a class of 40 pupils to talk to you about one.It can’t be done.Proper procedure in most schools calls for the parent and the teachers to agree upon a convenient meeting time.5.Don't hesitate to come to the school to state what you consider to be a legitimate grievance or to inquire about some phase of the school’s policy which you don't during the second half of 1852, the “main economic indica- | tors are all pointing in the same direction of heightened activity.” This is the keynote to the Bank of Montreal's latest business review which this month analyses trends indicated by the economic record for the first half of 1952, The review notes signs thai the “wheels of the economic - mechanism are coming into closer elignment.” The rearmament program, capital goods industries and export markets continue to make “strong demands” on the nation's resources.“Added to this, the consumer.after sitting back and buying sparingly for over a year, has since April been coming forward into the market and spending more freely.” But this is not to suggest that “all will be smooth rolling for business’ the B of M report emphasizes. The review points lo an apparent lessening of the volume of work ahead for the.construction industry.the vulnerable element in Canada's large export trade surplus with overseas count- vies, the “uncomfortably” high inventories which continue in a few lines.and detervent and disruptive effects which are bound to result from the recent prolonged steel strike in the United States.Defence Outlays Rise Government of Canada expend- fiures during the three months to the end of June showed a signifi- ¢ant increase over the comparable fiscal quarter of 1951.due mainly to a rise of 62 per cent in Department of Defence and Defence Production outlays. The hank adds that, since defence disbursements in this quarter were “far short” of the level implied by the budgetary estimate, defence spending should “continue to gain momentum in the months ahead.” In addition, the United States is buying niore armaments here, “establishing a better balance in reciprocal defence purchases between the two countries.” More important in “magnitude and economic impact” than direct defence disbursements, however, ave the trend and pattern of expenditures of a capital nature now being undertaken, mainly to develop strategic resources, the B of M stresses.Capital ontlays for 1952 in chemicals, non-ferrous metals, jron, steel, petroleum, coal, rubber.railways, water transport and transportation equipment are expected to show large percentage increases over 1951.By contrast, declines are estimated in secloys of the economy less closely related io the defence effort: finance, insurance, real estate, commercial services, forestry, wholesale and vetail trade, and housing.‘Canada’s foreign trade to the end of June this year has been featured by a consistently heavy ‘and importance of “labour” flow of merchandise exports amounting to an of 20 per cent over the conrpar- ; able period for 1951.review notes especially that vir- titally the whole of this increase has been in the “movement of | | concentrated in trade with dol- goods DAY By Rev.Canon R.Trinity Memorial Church Kenneth Naylor, Next Monday we observe Labour special honour to the fact that we are all proud to be labourers. It is in the Jewish-Christian tradition that labour and its honour are emphasized.God is represented as labouring at the task of creation and then as resting from His work.He commands His people to labour and to rest from their labour.Labourer, idler is a complete man.Labour Day then is essentially a different affair from the May Davx- - — observance celebrated in the radical tradition of continental Europe. Those observances were intended to emphasize the radical purposes of political labour.generally with a Communist trend. Our Labour Day was not intended politically but with the sheer purpose of emphasizing the dignity of labour. From that point of view we all take part in it from the parson to the Prime Minister - - we are all labourers and all proud of itl. However, there is another side to the matter which we must recognize. There is a group in the community which we call “La- nour”, Perhaps it can be described us consisting of those who work [er an hourly or weekly wage, as compared with those whose wages ure reckoned by the week or the month ( the distinction is, of course, & Very rough cne.)
