ago, Inspector Edmunston of the Westmount Police Force announced yesterday.Thé Examiner also learned that $500 in petty cash was lifted from the safe.Rumour that the stolen ambunt was estimated at $35,000 was unfounded, Inspector Edmun- ston stated. The theft was the biggest payroll robbery in the history of Westmount.Planned Job The men broke into the company office at Lansdowne avenue and St.Catherine street, tied the janitor and his wife and, covered by the noise coming from the Rotary Carnival only 200 feet away, spent three hours prying open the steel door of the strong box to get socialist tendencies are being exhibited by so many legislative bodies, it is my considered opinion that legislation of the type passed by the National Union: government should be encouräged by all citizens who want to keep a sane, sound, sober administration in this province.” Mr.Wilson, who for many years was a partner of the late Jonathan Robinson, former Provincial Minister of Mines, is thoroughly familiar with provincial government matters, and is a strong candidate from this standpoint. In his opening address, Mr.Wilson pointed to the provincial government’s record in education, health and housing, and compared it to that of the Liberal governments of Adelard Godhout and Hon.L.A.Taschereau.The National Union, he said, had built more schools and hospitals, done more for housing, than any government in this province.“It is high time’ he said, ‘that some \\of those good things came to Westmount.” “For years now” he added, “Westmount has been outside of the government benches, and as a result this riding has not been served in the way it well might.” The slogan “Win with Wilson" has been* adopted for the campaign. To Represent “Y” Lloyd Kishino of Westmount High School and Bob Hamilton of Lower Canada College are representing Westmount this week at the Dominion Swimming Championships in Marler Claims “I have condemned the waste and extravagance of the Union Nationale, the continual overspending of the budget and the piling up of new debt because I believe that these practices would lead, as they have done, to increase in provincial taxation”, George Marler, Liberal MLA, stated in a special release statement to The Examiner this week.Mr.Marler is seeking re-election this year in the West mount-St.George riding. In retrospect Mr.Marler observed that it was his honor of representing Westmount-St.George for a little over ten years and that during the last four years, since the general election, in 1948, when » Mounting Racial Problem In Africa Rotarians Told South Africa is suffering a mounting racial problem which is much more accentuated than trouble of this type.in the rest of the world, Sir Henry Low, told the Westmount Rotary Club at their weekly luncheon meeting this week.Sir Henry who has lived in Southern Rhodesia the greater part of his life said that friction between groups is almost inevitable there.“Infiltration has caused a great deal of trouble and when you have individual clashes trouble insues,” the speaker claimed.Sir Henry pointed out that to some extent Dutch and British set- tiers there also have their differences, He stated that the white population is represented by 60 per cent Dutch and 40 per cent British.Elaborating on how Europeans settled in Africa, Sir Henry; gave a brief résume of present conditions in various cities there.“It wasn't until the Boer War that Africans were seen as far couth as Capetown,” Sir Henry said.He was introduced by Cecil Med- far and thanked by Lincoln Newman.Ready “V” Camp For End of Month Camp Westmount, the Wesl- mount ¥.M.C.A, summer GL.3916.GEORGE C.MARLER he led the opposition in the Legig- lative Assembly it had been his opportunity to scrutinize government policies and practices. He also condemned what he termed the system of political patronage built up by the Union Nationale, its corrupting administration of the Liquor Act, and its dictatorial methods, “I believed that they were not in the best interests of the people and they were contrary to our Canadian way of life,” Mr.Marler, claimed.“The issue now,” Mr.Marler stated, ‘is whether the Province can afford to have Dr.Duplessis" government in office for a fourth term or not.” “IL say that we can not afford to do so,’ Mr.Duplessis says.“Why make any change?" I say, “Now is the time to install in Quebec the good honest government which only the Liberal Party can give.” Pointing out that he would most certainly run as a candidate again in Westmount-St.George, Mr.Marler thanked those who had given him support and confidence in the past.“While I have been a member of the Legislature at Quebec I have stood for the respect of British parliamentary traditions, sound stable government and the highest standards of political conduct.” He added that he did not intend to deviate from this attitude and if his supporters wanted him again to represent them in the Legislature he would be glad to have their support and atrive to prove worthy of their confidence.Mr.Marler reminded that He had opened a Committee Room at 4151 St, Catherine Street, West.mount; telephone number WI, 7460 is a prized possession of the Canadian destroyers serving in Korean waters. And a naval White Ensign is in a place of honor at 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Korea. The exchange was a result of the récent visit to Korean of Commodore James C.Hibbard, Chief of Naval Personnel. In between visits on board the Canadian destroyers operating off the west coast of Korea, Commodore Hib- bard flew from Inchon to 25th Brigade headquarters and toured some of the positions held by the Canadians. As he took his departure of the Army, Commodore Hibbard was presented with a captured Chinese communist rifle by the brigade commander, Brigadier P.M.Bogert, with the request he deliver it to the Canadian destroyers, compliments of the 25th Brigade.Commodore Hibbard duly presented the rifle to Commander James Plomer, commanding officer of HMCS Cayuga and then Commander Canadian Destroyers Far East.(The Cayuga has since returned to Canada and the new senior Canadian officer is Commander Dudley King, commanding officer of HMCS Athabaskan).e Biggest Robbery.(Continued from Page 1) Butler, bound and gagged the couple with strips of linen torn from a towel. They then set to work with hammers, chisels and crowbars. They succeeded finally in prying open the safe and stealing the money. When finished with their task, the bandits gave the couple the choice of being taken with them and released outside the city, or to remain on the spot. They chose the latter and, within half an hour, Butler managed to free himself and call police.DAIRY CENSUS The last census of the Dairy In- custry conducted for the year 1950 shows that there were a total of 1,839 butter and cheese factories and condenseries in Canada employing 22,563 persons and paying 4514 million dollars in wages.| These factories alone had an output for the year valued at 3986 million dollars.em oe gC TT + ee i Fight Lower Canada Students = Leave Soon For Bight Montreal boys Will have the thrill of their life when they tour England by bicycle and train under the supervision of Norman Hurst and Paul S.Howard, senior teachers at- Lower Canada College. The eight LCC students are Roger Brophy, 4622 Hampton; Charles E.Frosst, 181 Summit Circle; Robert Gardner, 313 Gros- Dental; Medical (Clinics Stopped The Quebec division of the Red Cross, having collected about $80,- 000 less than it sought in this year's financial campaign, as its minimum need to cover its activities in 1952, has been forced to stop the operation of its travelling medical and dental clinics in this province, it was announced today. The four mobile clinics, each staffed by two doctors, two dentists, two nurses and a driver- mechanic, have been serving out- of-the-way settlements since the end of the war, and the population in these areas has depended on them heavily.Last year, they served 14,580 patients including 680 surgical cases. In 1950, there were 8,088 patients, and 1,281 operations. There is every hope that next year, Red Cross collections may be improved sufficiently to permit resumption of the service, said A.L.Phillips, Quebec divisional president.' : “But, like any individual or any company, the Red Cross is unable to operate without money,’ he said.“And while we hate to deprive settlers of this service, we must economize somewhere for the rest of this year, to keep expenses within measure of the money we receive. The travelling clinics seem to be the one, among all the Red Cross activities, which could be eliminated with the least disastrous results to the population as a whole.” As a result, Mr.Phillips said, the free blood transfusion service, disaster units, veteran's welfare, nursing, personal inquiry and location office, water safety and other activities will be able to continue in full operation meantime. It is expected that, as for several years past, this year's expenditures by the Red Cross within Quebec province will considerably exceed the funds collected by the Society in the province.During 1951, expenditures in the province totalled $868,000, while contributions amounted to just $853,000.In this year's campaign, the city of Montreal fell about $65,000 short of the minimum objective set.COWS MORE EFFICIENT Average production of milk per cow in Canada has increased from 3,794 pounds per annum in 1925 to 4,626 pounds in 1951, a rise of 21.9 per cent. This now exceeds by several hundred pounds, the average of the 22 leading dairy countries of the world.MILK PRODUCTION INCREASE Milk production for the first quarter of 1952 was nearly 6 per cent over that of the first three months of 1951.There has been an increase in the number of milk cows on farms compared to a year ago, due to the export embargo of dairy heifers being introduced into herds.Mount Everest, highest mountain in the world, is in the Himalayas of India.to Bath, Bristol, Tour Of England 8i Grosvenor, Alan Hodgson, 1 Edgehill Road; Angus MacDowell, 854 Cote St.Antoine; I was born in Huron County.Dr.Peter Macdonald held one of I remember one night in a small town he was making a fiery effort and he could do it! - Suddently someone in the audience shouted out: “Doctor what's the duty on pills?” There was no hesitancy in the answer: “35% — do you need a box?" The crowd gave vent to one wild roar then he went on just as smoothly as if there had been no interruption — that is after quiet had been restored! .The curlous thing about the old straw stack discussions was that there were no neutrals.Men were clear cut on party issues, they were of one party or the other. They could go back over half a in American politics.W.J.Bryan was one of the big features of political.life in those days.Free silver, sixteen to one and “nothing to ate’ as .someone expressed it.English and.of course, Irish politics but there were mighty few VI.0448.X-41 females, leaving town.WE.1742.X-2 of drawers; night table.A g OTTAWA UBSERVER R.J.Deachman % x Topics of the Week x X There Have Been Some Changes Made — An Old- niel puppies, blonde, black, m es, ple are more or less indifférent, they have lost faith in all parties.curse on all your houses, what's the use?" Still they vote.» + ¥ How can we explain the changes which have come over the minds.of these people? They are only vaguely interested in the politica of today. You could get 200 people to a public meeting in the distant past, you will now do well to get 25.What brought about these changes? Is it the difference in the issues or what has happened? For one thing people no longer believe that great problems can be settled by political parties. If there had been giants among our statesmen in the past would things have been different — better or worse today?I doubt it! Besides the leaders of that time were giants. The problems they handled were smaller but they appeared as mountains to the men of those days, Macdonald, Laurier, Fielding and Cartwright were by no means’ pygmies. The issues with which they dealt seem small to us now because we are confronted by wider horizons — but Confederation and the building of the C.P.R.were great problems, would be great issues even in our time.Today there is no such clarity to our conceptions.Time has brought too many pictures to our minds. We lose ourselves in the mists. Then in those days the world was not always tottering on the brink of war.True we had many wars but the impact of the contending forces did not threaten to wreck a continent — or a world. From 1896 to 1914 was not a long period as time is measured but it was stagnant.Few dreamed that our placid age would be broken by one of the greatest wars of history.WHAT!
