knocked out} several transformers and power was cut for four hours while repairs were made.‘ ’ The trouble, occurring in the Glen road power house, was caused when electrical engineers were switching power from one circuit to another. The blackout came without warning,” power house officials said. It: cut off electricity throughout the city between 12.45 and 4.50 a.m.Power was cut deliberately Monday night while work was being done on the new hydro sub-station on Olivier Avenue.Rene Therrien at Hydro-Quebec in Montreal said one Montreal circuit was put out of commission by the trouble in Westmount, but it was quickly turned off and no power cut was necessary.West- mount buys its electric power from Hydro-Quebec, he said, but the suburban city has its own distributing centre and so the trouble was localized, Every private home in West- mount was affected by the power tut.The Montreal Tramways did not suffer, however, as it has an independent gource of power.Travellers in the area during the blackout said the lights from the trams and passing automobiles were the only illumination.: Westmount City Hall authorities said later the trouble at the power house had not been completely repaired but that further blackouts would not likely be necessary.School Holiday Dates Announced Westmount Protestant Schools will close for Christmas holidays on Friday, December 22nd, and will re-open on Wednesday, January 3rd.- In the case of the Catholic Schools, St.Paul's and St.Leo's academies, the graduates and undergraduates go on vacation today, but the children in grade school classes have to wait until next Saturday, December 23rd.The reason for the two dates is that the older students may take On some remunerative work during the holiday rush. The Catholic Schools will re- Underprivileged Kids Olivier Avenue Sub-station Opening Delayed Plans for the opening of the new Olivier Avenue Sub-Station in Westmount, were temporarily disbanded Tuesday night, when the City was plunged into darkness for four hours as a result of a flashover in the Glen Road Power Station.Personnel working at the substation were rushed to the Glen Road station when the flashover occured, causing several switches to be burned out.As a result, the power had to be turned off for approximately four hours, from 12.45 to 4.50 a.m.Wednesday morning, while the temporary repairs were being “| completed.A spokesman for the City said he did not know just when the new sub-station would he opened due to the breakdown in the Glen Road station.Originally scheduled for official opening on Wednesday, it is expected to take place soon. The spokesman also pointed out that the flashover was not due in any way to the work being completed on the new sub-station, but that the delay in opening is due to the shifting of the personnel to handle the breakdown at Glen Road.LIBRARY CLOSED The Westmount Public Library will be closed all day Saturday, December 23, and all day Satur- ora The addressed by Professor J.O.Moore, Director of the School of Social Work, McGill University, His subject was How gu—— Modern Education Meets the Whole Needs of the Child.Education today, he stated, | rests on the concept of the person as & whole. It is coexistent with life and operates from the cradle to the grave.Education requires organized and cooperative effort on the part of all major sos cial institutions, with the school being assigned a well-defined and important role.Particular cognizance must be taken of the culture and the community.“The school which expresses the best in modern educational practice,” he sald, “incorporates much .from progressive education, but goes beyond the progressive school. The curriculum Is based upon the requirements of the child at vare ious stages of development and the needs of the adult world, as the child is ready to grapple with them.” A recent poll of several hundred Montreal High School students, he stated, revealed the following problems to be of primary concern:— (1) Difficulties within mye self; (2) Finding a satisfactory relationship with the opposite-sex; (8) Acquirement of à college education; (4) Choosing a career; (5) How to solve the social conflicts of today, especially the possibility of war, and the destructive use of the atomic bomb.“These problems, together with that of finding socially useful work through which the child (especially the adolescent) can contribute to society, and helping young people develop inner control to ree place the external ones thrown off by society — these deserve a place of particular importance in today's curriculum,” he said.Prof.Moore concluded by emphasizing that modern education assumes that at the apex of all values are human values, and that if the primary function of education is recognized and education given its proper status in society, - We shall undertake the task of training teachers and financing educational enterprises on a much more realistic basis. After the formal lecture was concluded Prof.Moore dealt with the questions of parents from the floor, involving not only general educational problems, but specific matters affecting various age levels, Young Baptists Hold Special Christmas Event In connection with the Christmas season, the Westmount Baptist Church Young People held a special meeting last night.Vice-president, Jean Greig, led the group in a speclal Christmas program.Carol singing, reading of Christmas stories, solos and two main stories, “The Littlest Angel” and “Why the Chimes Rang” were all included in the event, Finally a Christmas thought, and a special Christmas prayer concluded the evening. The meeting of next Thursday will be entirely devoted to the singing of, Christmas carols. to cut down the cost of food processing, the consumer might benefit by reduced prices, Professor G.L.Burton of MacDonald College, told members of the West- mount Rotary Club at its luncheon meeting, Wednesday. The speaker claimed that while a number of devices and experiments are being made to help grow foodstuffs on the farms at a greater efficiency, such was not the case With the work being accomplished in providing greater and more economical ways of processing the food once it is sold by the farmer.; Dr.Burton suggested that a reduction in the processing and marketing of the various foods, would not necessarily mean less profit for the retailers, since a greater volume of sales could be expected. The speaker, who was introduced by Bill Tawse, pointed out that despite the lack of efficiency in Canadian processing and distributing standards, Canadians did enjoy one of the finest standards of living as far as food is concerned. He claimed that more than two- thirds of the people — two and one half billlon people—of the world receive less than 2200 calories a day, while the average Canadian’s diet is 3300 calories per day.“This,” he said, “constitutes a good full meal.” Dr.Burton claimed that the Tells Rotary United States has done some valuable research in the processing of food, and claimed that while Canada should and probably would rot carry out a plan or research on tha same scale, some research could he successfully made.He expressed the hope that this would be carried out, “to understand the marketing problems” and claimed that the recent signs by the Agricultural Institute of Canada, made the future hopsfut in this respect. The speaker was thanked by Albert Boire.Frank Kenwood presided.Gala WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY.DECEMBER 15, 1950 Many Questions Asked At Municipal Meeting Some of the questions and answers given at the annual meeting of the Westmount Municipal Association the proceedings of which ment was being followed by the the effect, that the matter is being studied and that a delegation had met with the C.N.R.and C.- P.R.in Ottawa. The delegation was well received and was told that the two railways were constantly replacing coal driven en- eventually eliminate the smoke nuisance near the tracks.According to readings taken on the smoke meters the smoke in Westmount was less impressive. To the question of why the snow removal was not carried out more efficiently, —Mayor Cameron stated that snow removal was purely a question of how much the city was willing to spend, and he personally thought that a reasonably good job was being done. The Mayor added that he believed that a better job was being done now than in previous years.Last year he said, $39,000 had been spent on roughing walks and roads.$24,- 1948, Mayor Cameron revealed. It is not the depth or amount of snow that counts the mayor added, but rather the kind of snow such as that which fell on Monday night of last week.Last winter 5,600 tons of roughing had been used.Rain sometimes called for a second roughing job.One complaint received, dealt with the snowplows piling up a ridge of snow in garage driveways after the resident has laboriously cleared it to the street, which necessitates more spade work.Mayor Cameron replied that with only about five or six gangs at work it was impossible for them to stop to clean out the thousands of driveways. While there was a permanent force it was also necessary to hire casual help and trucks, at St.Antoine road differed from numbers on Sherbrooke occasionally take a philosophic bent the “Miscellany” section of Time Magazine is a constant source of material for thoughts that, while not always sweet and pleasant, are most definitely worth thinking. For Time, with a thoroughness of which they are justifiably vain, cull only those items which are far from the beaten track. And it is the unusual which makes us stop and ponder.Consider these three items picked at random from a recent issue of my favourite news magazine.Item the first: Deadly Weapons. In Milwaukee, the city coun- cll voted a $25 fine for the use, sale or possession of peashooters. Now that I am past the pea shooting age I am all in favour of the various municipalities which make up this weather-beaten island doing the same.It would be nice, around Hallowe'en time, to be able to walk the streets of this suburb city without having to look fearfully at every 12-year-old to ascertain whether or not he is carrying one of these lethal weapons.Nothing deals a greater blow to dignity than to feel the sharp ping of pea on head and the tinkle of pre-ado- lescent laughter that accompanies it.And so I say: Ban the peashooters.Full speed ahead.Item the second: Handyman. In Cheektowaga, N.Y,, the Times printed a classified ad: “Wanted —Man to wash dishes and two waltresses.” After reading an item like that you wonder just how enjoyable such a position would be.At first it seems like a pleasant way to pass one’s idle evenings. But then, sober second thoughts (the bane of all travelling salesmen) make the prospect a little less alluring.Suppose that the dishes come by the hundreds.Suppose that the waitresses are fat, ancient and completely repugnant.Suppose that the waitresses don't like you.No, the second thoughts are too sobering.I tore up my letter of application, Item the third: Inflation note.In Buffalo, a drugstore chain advertised a headache remedy in the Evening News: “50c size —59c.Such honest advertising might be adopted with profit by some of our local merchants who are prone to sell the 50-cent item for à dollar and advertise it as a terrific saving.Honesty is still the best policy but, in advertising, it is becoming more and more rare.Bros.and Company Ltd.which his son also attended.- THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1950 = Westmount Student Wins His Third Scholarship interpreters to assist n the medical clinics and wards of the Royal Victoria Hospital. The need for persons who can speak foreign languages has arisen due to the fact that during the past few years, more and more people from the old world, who have settled here, are seeking medical advice.+ Proves Barrier In many instances they are unable to explain their ailments, particularly when it is not an outward abrasion. The children of these people are sometimes capable of speaking a few words in English or French but they cannot properly describe the case to the satisfaction of the dorctor. The difficulty of the language barrier resolves itself only after a great deal of time and patient groundwork on the part of all concerned.Languages mqst commonly required are Polish, Russian and Italian, but there is also a need for German, Czechoslovakian, Latvian, Greek, Ukrainian, Norwegian, in fact, almost every known tongue including Cantonese. It is suggested that volunteers may give one hour a week to obtain medical history and background of patients in the clinics and wards, at definite hours to suit the convenience of the interpreter. It was pointed out that in the case of an emergency, a list of on-call interpreters could be kept at the hospital. If you can speak any one language in addition to English, not including French, or know of anyone who would be willing to assist in this work, please call the Women's Voluntary Services for an appointment and further details.¥year he was awarded a scholarship by the university and the present award makes the third scholarship MacTavish
