that court action will face any motorist who does not make sure his vehicle is properly parked.“This is one of the greatest traffic hazards,” the Chief stated, pointing out that it was strictly through carelessness that the cars managed to break away.No injuries were reported in two .cases which happened during the past week, but Chief Byford said that this was more through “good luck” than anything ‘else.; One car, however, was damaged considerably when it mounted the sidewalk and crashed into the side of a home before coming to a stop. The motorist claimed that someone must have tinkered with the vehicle while he was inside à home visiting a friend, but Chief Byford explained, this does nof make any difference to the charge made by theni as a motorist should see that his car is locked before leaving it.Gladiols Sociely Hold Successful Show LA 0e A Prize winning gladioli are shown in the above picture which was taken in the armoury of the Royal Montreal Regiment, West- mount, at the two day show held by the Quebec Gladiolus Society last week. The exhibition was the largest yet held here.Gladiolus Society Show At R.M.R.Evokes Praise The armory of the Royal Montreal Regiment, St.Catherine street, Westmount, was transformed last week into a veritable paradise for flower lovers.- The finest exhibition of blooms ever staged by the Province of Quebec Gladiolus Society was held in the armory on Wednesday and i Thursday. The flowers were auctioned off on Thursday night by Perry L.Preising, one of the judges, and a prominent grower, with the proceeds going to the Ladies Auxiliary of the regiment to help finance their District Governor Praises Unity Boys’ Club Project “Let us preach, cherish, work and know this distinct organization of Rotary,” Ralph Wiber, District Governor of District 250, told members of the Westmount Rotary Club in his official visit at the weekly luncheon meeting, Wednesday. The District Governor, who is presently making many of his official vigits to Rotary Clubs in Ontario, Quebec and northern part of New York State, called the building of the Unity Boys Club a lead- and objects of the organization.Founding Recalled Introduced by the president, Frank Kenwood, the district - governor recalled the founding of Rotary by a young lawyer in Chicago 45 years ago.- “It was conceived in loneliness for fellowship and friendship”, the speaker said pointing out that the four young men, who first brought forward the idea, were men from small towns who were lost in the big city of Chicago, Claiming that San Francisco was the second city to open a Rotary Club, and tracing some other developments in the organ- _ ization, the speaker pointed out that Winnipeg was the first city in Canada to have a Rotary Club, | making the idea international.: “Today Rotary is in 83 countries, including 33 clubs in Ja- | Pan, 24 in Germany and 253 in Canada”, the speaker said. There gre 7188 clubs throughout the World at the present time, it was |! stated, Calling members of Rotary, \\: “men of distinction”, the speaker | | i Main reasons for this title was Said they deserved this title for many reasons, and one of the (Continued on Page 2) ing community service in his frank but inspiring address on the aims + Unusual Accident Case Cleared Up After a number of- investigations, officials of the Westmount Police Department have closed the accident case of Michael Don- nelly, a 15-year-old boy who was brought home after a bicycle accident.Originally suspecting that the boy had been hit by an automobile, the Police closed the case after checking for the second time.It is believed that the mend broke again, ana the boy tumbled from the bicycle at Prince Arthur and Sherbrooke streets, one police officer pointed out.Meanwhile Donnelly, who suffered minor injuries in the fall, can’t lend any help to the case as he can't remember just what happened. He was knocked unconsious and brought home by an elderly couple who, in the excitement, did not give their name to his parents.various activities.Mr.Preising, commenting on the show, said that the quality and number of the blooms displayed, exceeded anything the society had ever attempted. The show compared very favourably with the larger exhibitions held in the United States. The rather, cold, wet summer was responsible for.the splendid blooms, Mr.Preising thought, as the plants had been slower in flowering, which gave added size strength and appearance to the blooms. An outstanding exhibit “Ace of Spades” an almost black gladiolus produced by Sydney Mode of Vankleek Hill was the nearest approach to’a black flower growers have ever seen.“Elizabeth the Queen” a lavender bloom produced by D.Walter White, of Verdun and Ste.Therese, now president of the society, — and “Connie G” a cream yellow- throated gladiolus grown by Mr.Mode were much admired. The best recent introduction championship was won by Sydney Mode with “Tivoli” a pale pink, which also won the award for the best spike in the show. The judges were headed by C.A.Smith of Chateauguay.Special Exhibition at Westmount Library Now The Westmount Public Library is presenting to Westmount, an exhibition of British Book Design, shown under the auspices of the British Council.First displayed in London, this collection will be shown at libraries across Canada during thè next few months.Catalogues are available at the Library, listing” the one hundred titles selected for their excellence of design and format.PRICE 3 CENTS 3ALANCE Rev.J.B.McLaurin Warns Against Red Challenge - Rev.J.B.McLaurin, of of Toronto, preaching in Westmount Baptist Church on Sunday, said that “if the Christian Church does not meet the challenge of Communism, the Church will cease to exist.Rev.McLaurin is general secretary of the Canadian Baptist Foreign Mission Board. He described Communism as “ene of the greatest enemies of the Christian Church.” He added however, that Christians .are “in a position to outbid Communism, Communism is not the greatest ememy of the Church for the greatest are always inside the church itself, Dr.McLaurin said.“If Communism is able to batter down the gates of the Christian Church, it is because we are unconcerned about our fellow men.” True Christianity has been replaced by a purely nominal Christianity in some places, but when the church fails in her duty, someone is always raised up to goad her to new activity, he continued.Communism to-day is the “goad.” “Communism looks forward to dominating the whole world, and is ruthless in its determination to subdue the Christian Church” Dr.McLaurin said.“In some countries its policy is to bring the church to heel, to make it a tool of those who direct this totalitarian system. Our danger is our own spiritual numbness to-day.“We must face and meet this challenge to the Christian Church, or, as has happened in some places, the church will cease to exist. We are in a position to outbid Communism. But if we try to suppress it by force, we only suc- ceeqd in spreading it much farther. It is not much good denouncing it either.” Communism is spreading rapidly around the world because of “its capacity for spectacular successes’ the minister declared.“It has an especial appeal in Asia where countries are worshipping the god of nationalism.Communism promises freedom to these countries, although it is probably a specious promise.” As between Communism and Christianity, Christians must give their loyalty to one or the other,” Dr.McLaurin continued.Communism is more and more a totalitarian power, claiming the allegiance, mental and physical, of all, Christ claims our whole allegiance too, and that is why there can never be peace between Communism and Christianity. In following in Christ's steps we find the only answer to this greatest of threats and challenges to the Christian Church to-day: Office Closed Monday, Sept.4, being Labor Day, the offices of The Examiner will be closed. They " will re-open at 8:30 a.m, Tuesday.‘ Mayor Cameron To Give Report Mayor J.S.Cameron, of West- mount, returned from Saskatoon by air on Tuesday.Mayor Came eron had been attending the 13th annual conference of the Canadian Federation of Mayors and Municipalities, which was held in the western city.Mr.Cameron told the Examiner that he had considerable diffi- cutly in securing accommodation on the plane, due to the rail strike. The conference was most interesting, he said, and he has promised to give a report of the proceedings for publication in next week's issue of The Examiner.Subjects discussed were civil defence, method” of taxation, and even the question of military action in Korea was introduced by Premier T.C.Douglas, of Saskatchewan, who urged military action in order to prevent a third World War.Premier Douglas stated that military action was necessary to stop agression as in Korea, but it should be followed, he said, by economic action to get at the root causes of war.Represented Can.Cadets in lowa C.Douglas Taylor, M.BE., of 4719 Upper Roslyn avenue, West- mount, president of the Air Cadet League of Canada flew to Des Moines, Iowa, in order to be present at the third International Drill Competition between Air Cadets of Canada and the United States.Mr.Taylor was accompanied by another director of the league Lawrence S.Marsh, of Notre Dame de Grace. The event which was held on Wednesday was a feature of the Iowa State Fair.Canada was represented by a Canadian team selected from squadrons in the four Western provinces, which defended the trophy won in 19048 and 1949 by teams from Ontario and Quebec respectively. Truckers Take Bow; Ask for Strike Help The following letter was mailed to all members of the House of Commons, Ottawa, by the Canadian Automotive Transportation Association, The letter tells of the part played by truckers in helping out during the rail strike. If there was any further need of proof that truck transportation” is an integral and indispensable part of our economic life, current transportation crisis should resolve it once and for all .« « and it should demonstrate with unmistakable clarity the threatening implications of Federal control of highway transportation. This nationat transportation emergency would have been a national disaster if the trucking industry had not been free to play its full and rightful part in B | the nation’s business. It would be folly to jeopardize Canada's economic life in these critical years by denying the motor transport industry its natural growth. The recommendations of the railways in respect to meeting motor transport competition are economically unsound and politically undemocratic. All of Canada stands to lose if the Federal Government assumes control of highway transportation and inevitably proceeds to legislate it out of existence in response to pressure of railway management and labour. All public - spirited Canadians deplore the unhappy state of affairs precipitated by the railway strike. The members of the Canadian Automotive Transportation Association along with millions of other citizens hope that it will be resolved as speedily and as amicably as possible. In the meantime, the members of our provincial trucking associations are taxing every resource at their command to supply our people with the necessities of life and to keep the wheels of agriculture and industry rolling. We would be remiss in our responsibility to the Canadian people if we did otherwise. If and when Canada’s transportation problems come before the House of Commons we appeal to you to think back on this present emergency .With this crisis in mind and acquainted with all the facts we are confident that you will vigorously advocate the free, unhampered development of motor transportation in every part of this great nation.Respectfully yours, A.H.Muir, President.Louis 0.Dowd Buried Thursday Funeral services were held yesterday moming in the Church of the Ascension of Our Lord, West- mont, for Louis O.Dowd, 640 Lansdowne Avenue, Westmount, who died on Monday in his 80th year.Mr.Dowd was a well known stockbroker. He was first associated with the firm of Porteous and Company and later with Robertson and Morgan. He was a life member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, and took an active part in Victory Loan drives during both wars.Surviving besides his wife, the former Annette Beauchamp, are one daughter, Mrs.Patricia Mc- Laughlin, of Washington, D.C., and two grandchildren.Burial took place in Cote des Neiges Cemetery.Even the best drivers have accidents, regardless of whether or not it's their fault. But don't forget: the occupants in a car going 35 miles an hour have a better chance for survival than those in a car travelling 50, 60 or this | By GEORGE COCHRANE SCHOOL DAYS The long summer vacation ig just about over and next week Westmount's young seekers after culture will trudge back to their educational havens with dragging steps.Yet those dragging steps will be more camouflage than anything else for most young guys and gals have a pretty good time in school — and they know it.For those whose school days are now: only memories, the annual trek back to the textbooks is a time for reminding and for yearning. For there are few who wouldn't like to project the years back and once again be sitting behind a classroom desk with little but the occasional examination and the all-important problem of whom to ask to the school dance to trouble their thoughts. There have been changes in the educational process over the years but they have been gradual and most schools lag well behind what is accepted as best modern practice by educational theorists.“Learn by doing” is one of the themes which educational pundits are fond of discussing. The principle is not new but in most schools you'll find it rarely acepted. It's still a sit-back-and-listen proposition and, so long as passing a final exam is the big educational cbjective, it probably will remain that way.World War II proved the efficacy of audio-visual methods in teaching, by which is meant the judicious use of motion pictures, film strips, slides, mock-ups, models, excursions, field trips, dramatic participation, and so on.Yet in schools most learning is mere verbalization — words, not things, not ideas.Oh, yes, the motion picture film is used, and used often in some schools. But is it used properly ?The film should be part of a unit of work, not shown merely because it happens to be in the school. It should be introduced thoroughly and the students given a what-to- look-for pattern. It should be followed up by a discussion, by activities, by a test.Is it?The educational values of field trips and excursions have long been recognized.Yet how often does the average class abandon their school building to visit the harbour, or the local bank, or the post office, cr a bakery?Oh, yes, in public educationists will give a pretty convincing spiel about how advanced their school is.But just manage to get inside the building for a day and you'll find a completely different picture.Changes take time. But school is still a pretty good place to be and there will be many who would like to join the trek next Wednesday morning.District.(Continued from Page 1) that they were selected to become an official member of the organization. He pointed out however, that many Rotarians do not know Rotary and said that it was a giving organization; not a getting one.Cecil Medler, a past district governor of Rotary International thanked the speaker for the club. The president, also announced that the regular luncheon meeting of September 13 will be held at the Unity Boys Club.He said that it was hoped that every member would make a special point of attending this meeting, which is being conducted to further add to the work and aims of the local club in building the project.: It was also announced that a special program may be arranged to commemorate the 20th individual is able to cope with his own problems, sometimes the municipality will deal with those of a large nature, and sometimes the problems are left without solution. This situation was foreseen more than 100 years ago, when the forerunner of the Red Feather Services came into being.Way back in 1815 the Ladies Benevolent Society was formed, and since then one social agency after another has been formed to take care of the many problems that neither the individual nor the municipality was able to handle adequately.Over the years, social welfare agencies have been developed and refined, until at the present day, 30 Red Feather Services are united in the one campaign of Welfare Federation of Montreal. With the growth of the city and the Metropolitan area, welfare services have expanded. It became necessary to move into suburban areas to follow shifting populations, and now there is scarcely an area in greater Montreal that is not served in some way by the Red Feather Services. The City of Westmount benefits by the Red Feather Services, for boys and girls from this district attend Red Feather summer camps.Old folks find help at the ‘Red Feather family and health agencies, young married couples with marital problems seek help at the family agencies, and children who are left to their own resources find refuge at the Red Feather child care agencies.A number of the major Red Feather Services have their headquarters within the City of West- mount. The Children’s Aid Society is located on Claremont Avenue, while the Unity Boys’ Club recently began operations in its new building on Greene Avenue.Welfare Federation also has its headquarters in Westmount, occupying a building at 1040 .Atwater Avenue with six of the Red Feather Services, not far from Weredale Parents Night.(Continued from Page 3) volleyball, tug-o-war, and soccer baseball games. The Lumbermen earned these points and the Voyageurs worked hard to win the swimming meet and The EDITOR It is time that a complaint was made to health authorities about the condition of the sand play box for children in Queen Elizabeth Gardens. This box is used by a number of dogs for unsanitary purposes when the children have gone home in the evening and the following morning, small infants, whose mothers evidently do not know the condition of the sand, are placed in it.Some of these small children even put sand in’ their mouths after playing with the sand.It would be no wonder if there was an outbreak of disease under these conditions.A cover should be placed on the box about 5:30 and taken off at 10 a.m., or at least the sand should be changed frequently.A Westmounter.TRIBUTE TO THE LATE JUSTICE CASGRAIN The Editor, Sir: The news of the sudden and unexpected passing of Mr.Justice Pierre F.Casgrain came as a great shock to his many friends, not only within the city and province, but those from other provinces who had occasion to meet and admire him during the many years he sat in Parliament and occupied the important offices of Chief Whip, Speaker, and Secretary of State. To each of these several important positions he gave all that he had.His manner was not only charming and cordial, but he had a fine sense of humor. He was ever ready to lend his co-operation where he could be of service to a parliamentary colleague or friend. My friendship with him dates fram the time we entered the Law Faculty of the then Laval University in 1907.We graduated together and.were admitted to the Bar the same year.Pierre was very popular with his fellow students. What appealed to them were his qualities of loyalty, frankness, and kindness of heart. He was a serious student and graduated with honors. The members of the Faculty, the Dean of which was the late Mr, Justice Michel Mathieu, were very fond of Pierre. They predicted a splendid professional and political future for him, which was assured, when : he married the brilliant, gracious, and of usefulness. He was a parent, and a very loyal friend.Coming as he did on both the maternal and paternal side from distinguished families, he exhibited the many qualities that we look for in those who possess the chivalry, courage, and fine character that are the hallmarks of French Culture.Canada has lost in him one who was an ornament to the Bench, who took pride in his profession, and served his country unselfishly and devotedly during the many years that he sat in Parliament.Pierre F.Casgrain was a great Canadian in the fullest and highest sense of that distinction. His memory will be
