Christian religion and who shake their heads and wonder if conditions here are not fast approaching the same stage.Free Thinker The Editor, The Examiner, .Sir, From The Examiner of August 11th, I learned that Mayor J.S.Cameron, of Westmount, Alderman Reginald Dear and City Attorney, J.W.Weldon, K.C,, would be attending the conference of Canadian Mayors which is being held in Saskatoon ‘this week.‘The article stated that the principal topic of discussion would be the question of “Civil Defence".It is to be hoped that Mayor Cameron will bring back some constructive plans for the creation of an efficient civil defence organization and that he and his council will immediately consider the construction of bomb shelters.‘Living as we do right up against railway communications and key industrial plants, West- mount would be a very likely target for enemy bombers.Various opinions and statement have appeared in print as to the exact radius in which persons living would be killed or maimed and whilst these differ considerably, there is little doubt that anyone within two to eight miles of the blast wguld be very unlikely to survive, unless protected. What about boring into the mountain side, and squapping the cavees or shelters so as to be able to deal with an emergency? That this would be costly, goes without argument, but money or securities are of little value to a dead man.Worried The Editor, The Examiner.Sir, I learn from the newspapers that Prime Minister St.Laurent has called the Canadian Parliament into an emergency session for Tuesday, August 29th.According to the announcement, the session will deal pri- marly with the railway strike and the safe-guarding of the peoples interest as a consequence of the strike. The granting of the proposed increases would no doubt be reflected in a’ further increase in the cost of living, now -at an all-time high.I remember the Hon.D.C.Abbott, member for St.Antoine- Westmount, saying last February that orderly de-control.would have the effect of prices of commodities and living accommodation finding their own level.Since that time we must have had a flood-tide, as the level has sleadily mounted, due to reported shortages, and so-called increase in costs, even to the price of fresh green grass, which is reflected in the fantastic price of steaks.Of course, the war in Korea may make it more difficult for the grass to grow in Western Canada and the present generation of packers have the text books which their fathers left them from other wars, which teach that it is the thing to do; to wallow in profits while other men wallow in blood — their own blood. Is is reported that prices of rubber and tin in England have receded and that other commodities will follow suit. Therefore, whilst the government is in session next week, I (Continued on Page 7) systems.graph tariffs and express rates.ers, for every job, also two trains to .many points, when one man and one train, would carry the load.Whether the Canadian National Railway system, would be handed over to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company to manage, or vice-versa, is unimportant, as long as an effecient and economical plan of running the railway system of this vast Dominion is put into effect. The writer seems inclined to believe, that a railway system, divorced from Government management, and political interference, would be the best for Canada. The follows: The Editor The Examiner.Sir, I happened to pass through a large office building on Monday, and probably due to the talk of an impending railway strike, my attention was drawn to two telegraph offices, one facing the other, C.P.R.and C.N.R.letter received reads as and both appeared to be very one office, and one staff, could very well handle all the business in that particular building, and also in the various other places, where a duplication exists, such as hotels etc.- Who is paying for this duplication of service?Who is paying for the duplication of trains, duplication of railway offices along the line? The answer is quite obvious, John Q.Public.It would seem, that if the railway personnel, who are now on strike, are to receive higher remuneration, and work shorter hours, that the additional costs, Will of necessity be passéd on to those using the railroads, either as passengers, or shippers, and in turn, the increased tariffs, will eventually cause an increase in the already all-time high cost of living for the average Cahadian. If Parliament, when it re-as- sembles in Ottawa next week, will only have the courage to solve the railway mess in Canada, and come out with a bold scheme, for amalgamation of the two transportation systems, maybe, the railroaders could get their demands for shorter hours and increased pay, without the public being hurt.To my mind, any transportation system should be divorced from age, only in this way, will Canadians get value for their money when using the railways.I well realize, the difficulties which lie ahead, in putting this plan into Economist Advocates Railway Amalgamation The Examiner is in receipt of a letter from “Economist”, the writer advocates the amalgamation of the two Canadian Both offices were fully staffed, || = It is pointed out, that if the striking railwaymen are aug in their demands for shorter hours and increased take smiling woman who will soon present herself, laden with gifts, at your door, is not quite Mrs, Santa Claus in modern guis e She is your Welcome Wagon hostess, carrying out the old pioneer custom of substantial help as well as friendly advice.During the last century when the people of the east were trekking westward by wagon train to open North American continent, the id up the vast western part the hew community. From this custom Thomas H.Briggs of Memphis, Tenn.got the idea for his Welcome Wagon Service. From small beginnings in 1928 this movement has spread to nearly 1,000 cities in Canada and the United States. In Montreal eight hostesses work, with social and civic groups of the community and represent local and national business sponsors, their products to newcomers and mothers of new babies.Excellent Public Relations Wren interviewed by this paper, Mrs.Dorothy Willock, hostess for “Baby Time’ in Montreal West, N.D.G., Westmount, and east as far as University street, pointed out that both sides benefit from this unique form of public relations. The housewives are most happy to receive the practical gifts and gift certificates and to receive tips about such things as schools, transportation, local services, where to find a maid, and so forth, The moral boost to strangers in the district is also always gratefully received. On the other hand, local merchants are given the best possible advertising at low cost when the consumer is met right in her own home and actually presented with a representative product.A new mother will receive most of the following: a pink or brush-and-comb-and-toy set and baby kit containing oil, soap, powder, etc, from the drugstores: height and weight chart from an insurance company; complimentary cards for baby photos; a
