Westmount's annual spring floral display is depicted in the above pictures.Top left shows a banana tree with the fruit slowly ripening in tropical splendor.Top right is a picturesque windmill, with the two lower photos showing the mass of blooms which gives a fairy-like appearance.The scent given off by the many variety of flowers is delightful.Pro-Mayor J.S.B.Pemberton Opens Westmount Spring opened the City’s annual spring floral display on Wednesday.Mr.Pemberton who was introduced hy alderman R.Panet- Raymond, added “I think the chance of seeing this display is a very wonderful Recorder Hale Mr.Justice Philemon Cousineau, at St.Jerome, on Saturday, or= dered the release of an eleven year old Westmount boy, who was sen= tenced to serve five years for theft of a bicycle, by Recorder C.A, Hale of Westmount, in 1948.The proceedings in the appeal of the sentence were reported ig The Examiner of December 23, at which time it was stated that Judge Cousineau had taken the case under advisement, Mr.Justice Cousineau’s order x: came in a judgment handed down on Saturday, maintaining a writ of habeas corpus, presented on the boy's behalf, which charged that the sentence was “irregular, illegal, null and void”.The judgment stated that commitment and sentence of the hoy by Recorder Hale was “illegal, null and void” and “the boy is unlawfully detained and imprisoned and must be discharged from the said conviction and he is to be released and set at liberty”.The boy who was nine years old at the time of the sentence, was arrested two years ago hy West- mount Police, as he was riding a bicycle owned by Mrs.Ruth A.Reid.The bicycle was valued at $20.He was brought before the Westmount recorder and sentenced to the five year term.He has served one year of the sentence at the Shawbridge school, before petition for a writ of habeas corpus was presented last July to Mr.Justice Cousineau by Mrs.Florence Eugenie Davis, the boy's foster mother.Legal counsel for Mrs.Davis were N.W.Jacobs, K.C., and John E, Crankshaw, K.C., who maintained that the law provided for a maximum sentence of six months for a juvenile offender who steals an article valued under $25.On presentation of the petition the judge ordered the boy to appear in court, and he was subsequently released on $50 bail.The hearing took place last December, at St.Jerome.The facts were reviewed, representations made on behalf of the young offender, and final judgment was handed down Saturday.Since the boy's release on bail, he has been attending a private school in Westmount, and his principal and teachers reported that his progress was “favorable”.Before his conviction the boy attended King’s School, whose principal George Donald Lessard, testified “inter alia’ as to the boy’s character.The attorneys stressed that under law the prosecution is not entitled to give evidence of a prisoner's bad character unless the prisoner offers evidence to prove his good character, either by examining his own witness, or by questioning the Crown witness.Since the boy had made no defence, nor had he been asked to make a defence, the petition maintained he was deprived of his’ right of full answer and defence to the charge of stealing.Civic Officials Pay Tribute to Thomas Moffitt Members of the Westmount City an air of cool detachment, and even more the antics of their less intelligent underlings, it is possible to derive considerable entertainment with the expenditure of very little money.; .Take for instance the Commies’ Canadian newspaper, not mentioned by name here because I'm told that the Red boys take great delight in using the decadent bourgeoisie's laws to their own advantage.And libel laws have not yet been scratched from the statute books.I bought a copy of the Commie weekly the other day merely to see what type of propaganda they were circulating in this country.Frankly I was a little disappointed.There is a great deal about Soviet Russia's form of government, aims and policies which is without a doubt misunderstood and misrepresented on this continent, particularly at this time when the cold war is at its height.Bu, instead of making an intelligent plea for the sympathy of the Canadian workers, the Commies are filling their publication with the vilest sort of tripe, almost all of it written by people whose education in the niceties of the English language apparently halted somewhere in the vicinity of grade seven.Their hoarse shriekings at Messrs.St.Laurent, Pearson, At- cheson and their cohorts can impress none but the mentally undernourished.And this country is certainly not going to let itself be run by a conglomeration of nincompoops.There are those with superior intelligence in the Communist Party.That fact becomes evident almost every time there is a round-up of Red spies.How these people can stand idly to one side and see one of their chief propaganda media acquire all the vices of a cheap tabloid and a few of its virtues is something which I find difficult to comprehend.ITEMS Along the local scene it is a Shake gently to remove dust.If it 1s the first time they are being washed, soak in cold water for an hour or two to remove the dressing.It's a good idea to let them soak anyway to remove the starch.A little borax added to the water helps in this process.Make suds with mild soap flakes and lukewarm water and either wash curtains by hand or put in an old pillow case and leave.in wagher about three minutes.Rinse two or three times in water of the same temperature (lukewarm).Never twist or wring curtains.Roll in Turkish towels to absorb most of the moisture.When partly dry, ease into shape and hang at window or put on stretcher adjusted to original size of curtain, If curtains require stiffening— use either starch or gum arabic.Make starch paste with cold water and thin with boiling water, making sure it's smooth.Dip curtains in starch solution after final rinsing.The ruffled type may be hung in the shade — never where they'll be blown about — and if left to dry, must be dampened before ironing, The gum arabic solution is made by dissolving one ounce of gum arabic in one half pint of boiling water, strain and bottle, Keep well corked.Use one teaspoonful in a pint of cold water.Dip curtains in this, then stretch and iron.* PAGE SEVEN Mrs.Mary Ann McDonnell Died at Home Here Friday Mrs.Mary Ann McDonnell Carpenter of 376 Clarke Avenue, Westmount, died at her residence on Friday.She was the wife of George A.Carpenter.Funeral services were held in the Church of the Ascension of Our Lord, Westmount, on Monday morning with interment in Cote des Neiges Cemetery, Mrs.Adelaide Mills Greer Dies Here at Advanced Age Mrs.Adelaide Mills Greer, of 4296 Dorchester Street, West.mount, died on Friday in her 84th year.She was the widow of the late William John Greer.The funeral, which was private, was held on Monday from the Chapel of Jos.Wray & Bro, Mountain Street, to Mount Royal Cemetery.In full stride the ostrich covers 25 feet with each step.Chiropractor J C ELLIS, D.C.1540 Crescent Street For .Appointment PLateau 4387 Lo NE tT After hitting my nose with a hoe handle when stepping inside the garage door yesterday, I have finally decided to put my tools in order—not before it was needed either! two quarters.Queen's found Iona's 1-3-1 zone defence just about impenetrable in the first half while Queen's man to man was almost as tough to crack for the visitors.The tide of battle turned midway through the second half when Queen's went all out in a great display of spirited basketball.Higgens was the individual star for the winners with eight points while Pat Robinson was next in line with five.Jona's big gun was captain Stanley Goodman, who potted 10 points.- Dimunitive Gordon Goldsmith also turned in a stellar game for the losers, being particularly effective in the fourth ‘quarter.He accounted for seven points.FAST MOVING.STAR On a recent 24-city tour actor John Payne appeared in three cities in one day — Charlotte, Durham and Raleigh, N.C.— in conjunction with his Pine-Thomas picture, “Captain China”, Paramount release.Thirty-five days were required to make the tour.| | i | | PAGE NINETEEN TOGETHER AGAIN Maureen O'Hara and John Payne are reunited again, this time in Pine-Thomas' “Tripoli”, Paramount release filmed in Tech nicolor, Their last co-starring assignment was “Th iracle of 34th Street.” The n picture ls an outdoor adventure drama.Ask fou \\ , Orion Hané * Qascason © axchice ;
