MEETINGS A Westmount resident, R.R.Bostwick, 60, of 1 Rosemount ave- apt.65, was killed when trying to cross Western avenue, f Saturday afternoon. The victim was allegedly crossing the street when struck by Marcil Villemure of 128 Chatelle street, who was trying to pass another vehicle at the time.It was reported that Bostwick, in an attempt to miss being hit by the first car, was struck by the second.Suffering multiple injuries of the legs, body and head, he was given almost instant treatment by Dr.M.Nutik of 409 Clarke avenue. The victim was also, wrapped up in blankets from the Ice Manufacturing Company until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to the Western Division of the Montreal General Hospital, who pronounced him dead on arrival.Constables A.E.Jones and F.L.Miller investigated. The body was removed to the morgue pending an inquest.A coroner's jury on Monday returned a verdict of accidental death.Mr.Bostwick, assistant chief engineer in the C.N.R.construction department, had been employed by the C.N.R.for 35 Snow Queen At Westmount Carnival mount parks department, Queen's School, Westmount, held their snow carnival on Tuesday night.Demure Clakre Vezeau, have found that with the girls one must begin young. It is hoped that later the activities of the centre can be expanded to take in the older age groups. It is proposed to locate the centre in a section of the city in the central area, where there is a large child population and a lack of recreational facilifies, and it will be in a school under the jurisdiction of the Montreal Protestant Central School Board, Leaders from other parts of the city will be welcomed for training, Mrs.Corbett said.‘She pointed out that only 15 per cent of after school projects at present, are for girls, and most of that was provided by the Girl Guides.Eventually it is hoped that the M.G.A.will parallel the work of the Montreal Boys' Association in relation to the needs amongst the young girls, Chairman of_-the meeting was Miss Helen Guiton, president of the M.G.A.who said that Mrs.Corbett has heen Chief Commis- gioner for the Canadian Girl Guides that she helped to form and then became chairman of the Western Hemisphere Committee of the World Association of Guides, and that she is convener for the Local Council of Women of Montreal.W.E.Dunton, chainman of the Montreal Central School Board, in a brief address, invited the M.G.A.to use the board's schools. He gaid (Continued on Page 2) (Continued on Page 2) \\ Play Centre At Westmount Meeting Bad girls are just as numerous as bad boys, Mrs.John S.Corbett, chairman of the finance~-committee of the Montreal Girls’ Association told a meeting of the directors of the association held at the home of Mrs, A.Turner Bone.551 Argyle Ave, Westmount. The immediate object of the meeting was to discuss plans for the establishment of a play centre for girls in central Montreal and for the forthcoming campaign for $30,000.The lack of recreational facilities for young girls, Mrs.Corbett said, was a “serious and continuing emeigency.” The play centre is planned initially, she said, to take care of the needs of the six to twelve year old group. This she said was x Comfort Station At Glen, Gone The public waiting room and comfort station at the Glen and St.Catherine street west intersection has been demolished., This landmark built about 25 years ago was ordered torn down by the City of Westmount.J.E.Anderson, superintendent of parks for Westmount, said that the building had served its purpose and that as it had been getting into a bad state of repair, it was felt that the comfort station had outlived its usefulness. The Montreal Tramways had leased part of the building soma.years past but had discontinued using it recently.Man Arrested for Theft Of Clothing in Westmount Marcial Morin, 38, of no given address, was found guilty of stealing clothing valued at $3,300 from G.Roberge of 232 Metcalfe Avenue,” and remanded for sentence by Recorder C.A.Hale of the Westmount Recorder's Court.Morin was picked up by the Westmount Police Department early Friday morning and appeared in court the next day.* Werry Supported- Admit Electors Council Chamber The letter written by Royal Werry, K.C., which was published in the last issue of The Examiner, has apparently received cone siderable attention. The Westmount lawyer in his letter.criticized, as he put it, “In a constructive spirit” the method of snow disposal building by-laws’ of Westmount.A further letter bearing on ~which, he stated, is costly, the high rate of taxation, and the outdated - Mr.Werry's remarks -has -been received from “Westmounter” who seems to be of the opinion, that some of the former's complaints might ‘have been obviated, had more information been made residents.Asks Open Council Meetings He suggested that the practice prevailing in other municipalities, of throwing open to the public regular council meetings would, in his judgment, remove doubts any voter may have as to the efficient operation of the City’s administration.A suggestion is also thrown out that some action might be taken to improve the appearance of some of the streets in the business section, especially does he point to that part of Victoria Avenue running from Westmount Station to Sherbrooke Street. Our correspondent's letter reads as follows: The Editor, The Examiner, Dear Sir: I was interested in reading in your issue of February 10th, a letter by Royal Werry, K.C., criticizing the administration of the City of Westmount. If conditions are as stated by Mr.Werry, it would seem that he has some justification for his complaints, However, I have usually found that if sufficient light is thrown on faults which, at first glance, appear obvious, that a second look sometimes shows the defect in a different setting.Make Information Available It would appear that Mr.Werry finds it difficult to obtain information which should be available to any citizen and this naturally would arouse resentment in any community.I can conceive of no good reason why the meetings of our City Council should be held behind locked doors. In Montreal and other adjoining municipalities, the public is admitted to council meetings, according to the capacity of the space available. Why not in Westmount ?I do not have any direct knowledge of the things complained about by Mr.Werry, but I would like to draw attention to the shabby, in fact, almost slum-like state of certain sections of our business streets.Business Streets Slummy Especially would I point to that part of Victoria Avenue running from Sherbrooke Street down to the C.P.R.Station, Some of our streets in the lower level could stand a lot of attention, in order to bring them into some- available by the City Council to BUSINESSMEN HEAR EXPOSE ON RETAILING The five basic rules for success in retail trade, was the EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1950 Westmount Club Talent Shines In Members Day Entertaiment ‘By HELEN B., SANDWELL Glimpses of fashions of yesteryear and modes from the salons of today, along with an amusing one-act comedy, a sketch demonstrating a typical French lesson given to club members in one of the regular club groups, formed the delightful program given on Members Day by the Westmount Women's Club on Friday in Victoria Hall, The stage was decked with flowers and greenery, the whole colorful, in the glow of the footlights, and’ members and their friends sat gt their ease at small tables on which tea was served during the intermission.Mrs, H.S.Jacques, Président of the Westmount Women’s Club, welcomed the members and their friends.Much of the credit for the successful afternoon goes to Mrs.J.C.McKean who arranged the program, was chairman of the day and also acted as commentator for the fashion shows.Mrs.F.G.Sharpe played the music. The Light Touch The afternoon’s entertainment got off to a good start with the comedy “It was a Lovely Meeting” by Sophie Kerr, directed by Dorothy Pfeiffer, C.D.A.The play depicted the clash of temperaments and interests apt to occur at a woman's meeting. It brought forth much appreciative laughter, proving that women enjoy a laugh against themselves and their foibles. The casting was excellent and the players made the most of their lines without overacting. The comedy was a team affair, not depending on any one artiste, but on the excellent work of all to gain its laughts —
