at an age when a person becomes bewildered in the world of grown ups and small fry.He was living in a northern town during this period and the winters seemed long and lonely.Oh, yes, there were plenty of kids around to play with but he had too much to do; too many little irons to keep hot.School then was a necessary evil, something that had to be tolerated.Thunder and Nan were German shepherds, two of the finest specimens of the canine breed that he ever owned.Bringing them up ‘from young puppies they obeyed his slightest command. They were trained in every aspect of being leaders.Leaders who were to forge their way through blizzards, dragging a reluctant dog team, whose paws were bleeding and swollen with the cruel icy splinters that had to be driven over, to reach warmth and safety. At that time the boy was studying to be a concert violinist. What has a violin to do with this story? Both the dogs and the violin were to shape this boy's future. The many gruelling hours of practice year in and year out were beginning to pay off.The strings no longer scratched uncertainly. The fingers flew through the difficult concertos — the violin was beginning to sing. The boy became tempered to a fine promising artist.Nerves, however, began to tighten up as the strings of the violin itself.Weekends were spent out in the woods in summer with the dogs, on the frozen wastes of the lakes in winter. It was only to be a short trip of about twenty or so miles this winter day which started out so bright and clear. The dogs were Near Roslyn Ave.Reply MA.3038 — HEATED GARAGE WANTED Will winter store your car in my garage and pay rental for live storage of my car if accessible and clear during winter.and The Boulevard Evenings WA.2224 BRITISH WORLD FEDERATION À He RADIO BROADCAST EACH SUNDAY AT 9:30 AM.STATION CKVL (980 ON YOUR DIAL) TUNE IN FOR ACCURATE INFORMATION REGARDING THE REAL MEANING OF PRESENT WORLD CONDITIONS ISRAEL (CANADA) eager to be off.For the first hour, the brisk morning air brought a joy to both the boy and dogs, but soon the sky became oversast, and snow flurries started.Soon the wind come up and the snow came down heavier. The winter roadway on the lake became completely obliterated by the heavy driving snow.Everything was a white cold world. The dogs kept padding along, driven on by a sense of direction which only the uncanny intuition of an animal understands. After travelling blind for a short while, Thunder, the leader, stopped the team and would proceed no farther. No coaxing or cajoling could force the dog to continue. When commands failed, the boy who always carried a large loaded stock whip for protection, became impotent with rage, and half crying with anger, began to do something he had never done before; he started to whip Thunder. The dog, who worshipped the boy, bared his fangs and growled, but would not drive the team.Through the blinding snowstorm, an Indian Squaw appeared, and, poking a long stick into the snow a few yards ahead of the dog team, showed the boy that through the thin layer of snow and ice, the stick disappeared. The dogs had known teat ahead was danger.Apparently they had heen driving straight towards an ice field where men ‘had been cutting ice for the summer ice houses of a lumber camp, and this had only frozen over lightly.Through the help of the squaw, the boy and team finally reached a sheltering island, where shelter and comfort awaited them in the form of an Indian encampment, Careening down an icy incline, the following day, the lad had further trouble. His wrist was broken — the hand that he needed so badly to become a concert violinist.Again, the dogs took charge, and loped all the way home with the miserable boy.The violin, was now, of course, put away until the wrist would heal. The dogs, including both Thunder and Nan had to be destroyed, because, shortly after, the family moved to a large city and could not be taken; they could never be given to another master. The heartbroken boy never played again, nor have I ever own- ed another dog.meme —— NOTES YOUNG ADULT SECTION Square Dancing is moving right along, everyone is having a real good time.Friday evening—to- night—at 7.45 p.m, the Games Room floor will be cleared and the first caller will be ready to call "Square your sets.” This group has been growing, and it is anticipated that there will be four or five sets ‘all the men lefting”, “dosey-doing”, and “spinning that gal with the buttons and bows”.Jake Conn, Slim Mc- Gruther, and Howie Fairbairn will lead the dancers with their calls.Come and hear them! Genesis to Revelation as now furnished in the Christian Science textbook, ‘Science and Health with Key to fhe Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy, both of which volumes are much beloved by Christian Scientists. The most important and yet the kast understood subject, the one Ménost taken for granted without much inquiry, is that of God, His nature and purpose. If men really inderstood God instead of having mere belief in a vague far-off be- bg — that is, if they knew that fod is the only power and the nly intelligence.which the real man reflects, this consciousness vould dispel the human and mesmeric tendencies toward strife, hatred, wars, fear, and other dis- fords. The human senses doubt such rearness, but yet in the midst of tonfusion and fear, the presence ind power of God remain un- thanged, for He is All and every- Where, regardless of temporary, lite, physical sense testimony to the contrary. The Psalmist put it, “If I make ny hed in hell, behold, thou art there” (Ps 139:8), meaning that the confusion generated by mortal hind, its bewilderment, fears and tnxieties, can be put off when we deept the divine as the only pres- thee, as our only consciousness.Eternity, immortality, is always here man is.Man can never de- fart from immortality. There is no tomptition in divine Mind or Truth.God made all that is real, harmonious, and everlasting. He ver made a suppositional pawer N ophosition to His own infinity t good. There are not two organi- tions; one headed by God and the other by devil, each competing with the other.Such supposed and divided partnership is, of course, fallacious.God is infinite, all- power; there is none else.St.John, one of the twelve disciples of Christ Jesus, made great fundamental §tatements in his words: “No man hath seen God at any time .God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” (1 John 4:12, 16).To dwell in Love, who is God, not human emotionalism but Love divine — and Christian Science shows us the way—means a conscious calm and peace.Nothing unlike good can’ exist where God is the sole author, creator, director, governor, Father- Mother, and He maintains all in perfect harmony regardless of temporary physical sense testimony to the contrary. The writings of both the Old and New Testaments, when understood in the light of Christian Science, dismiss any doubt as to the nature and purpose of God.All may prove that the divine presence is here and now, every day, every hour, always in our midst ready to adjust any situation in accordance with God’s ever-operative law of harmony, of which man is the direct beneficiary. The world is far from being unified in its concepts of ‘Christ Jesus, his mission, his teachings and their uefulness.Jesus was a human whose name was similar to that of other men of his day, but the Christ was and is the truth which Jesus taught and practiced and to which he referred when he said, “Before Abraham was, I am” (Jôhn 8.58).A study of Jesus’ words and works in the light of Christian Science makes logical and demonstrable the great teachings he left for his followers, not only of his immediate day but for all time. His instructions are clear, unmistakable, and direct.Man, made in the image and likeness of God, is forever spiritual, ageless, deathless, sinless. It is this recognition of man which enabled John to say, ‘Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God” (I John 3:9).One of the most precious gifts to humanity, one that remains forever individual, is the ever- available opportunity to pray. The prayer of true-and individual communion with the divine Mind, or God, is the greatest and most productive of all meditations. It brings us the clear realization, and consequently the clear evidence, of the divine presence and God's ever-operative law of harmony. It shows us the open fount of refreshment.Prayer is always uindividual; it need never be unanswered. There ~ (Continued on Page 16) 20% TO 25% REDUCTION IN OUR Travel Ration Period Began NOVEMBER 16th AS ANNOUNCED BY THE MINISTER OF FINANCE, THE REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE USE OF U.S.DOLLARS FOR TRAVEL CONTINUE IN FORCE.As in the past, it will be necessary for Canadians to obtain a permit from their bank if they wish to take out of Canada more than $10 U.S., or more than $25 in U.S.and Canadian currency combined.Pleasure Travel The maximum amount of U.S.dollars which.any Canadian resident may obtain for pleasure travel purposes during the twelve months beginning November 16th, 1949, is $150.In the case of children of eleven years and under, the amount is $100.There is no restriction in the number of trips as long as the annual.allotment is not exceeded.Travel for Business, Health or Education Reasonable amounts of U.S.dollars may be obtained for these purposes by making dpplication through any of the chartered banks.Travel to Europe Special arrangements exist whereby Canadian dollars can be used to buy the appropriate currencies for travel in the United Kingdom and other sterling area countries, as well as in most countries of Western Europe.Travel expenditure in these countries does not come out of the $150 U.S.currency forces the following month. He promptly resumed his chosen trade, and within ten months was operating under his own name. His first big job was the old Allen Theatre — now the Palace — on St.Catherine St.That job turned out to be a first-class piece of craftsmanship, and marked a stage in business.Thereafter, the new firm began to specialize in the most modern methods of plumbing and heating, and it has kept up-to-date in both commercial and residential needs. However, if the years were unbroken, this did not mean an unbroken record of success. As always there were interludes. When the depression hit in 1929, it was as bothersome to plumbers as to brokers and bankers.Failures on the part of general contractors, particularly those responsible for a major housing development in Montreal West, distressed a good many in the trade, and Mr.Leggett was not one of the least. It took time and fortitude, and a considerable amount of business goodwill, which suddenly came to the fore, to work out of that. But finally this combination won out.During World War II, Mr.Leggett established for the Federal Government plumbing and heating systems in some of the largest military camps in Eastern Canada.Near North Pole Since then the firm has specialized in prefabricated plumbing and heating installations, and its activities have ranged in recent years from Sable Island to Banff, B.C., and north to Churchill, Ungava Bay, Yellowknife, and to one point not far south of the North Pole.Just recently Mr.Leggett's youngest son “Bob” returned from the Arctic, where he supervised plumbing and heating installations for government contractors.Incidentally, both sons were in the navy during World War II, and one, Reginald, jr., went down with H.M.C.S.Athabasca, and spent 15 long months in German prisoners- of - war camps.Last spring Mrs.and Mr.Leg- gett made a trip back to old haunts in Britain, touring Devon, Cornwall, Scotland and many other of the beauty spots of the Old Country. Before their trip ended it was expanded to the continent.Mr, Leggett is a member of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, the National Association of Master Plumbers and Heating Contractors of Canada, Inc.and The Corporation of Plumbing and Heating Contractors of the Province of Quebec.} Both Mr.and Mrs.Leggett see eye-to-eye on more than the average number of social activities, and on none more than their joint.endeavours in caring for others. These benevolences are carefully Karnak Karnival wag official opened on Wednesday night Victoria Hall, Westmount, |, University of Western Ontario Mustangs, leading the Purple and White to their fifth Canadian Intercollegiate title. The title went back to Londun, Ontario as a result of Western’s upset 12-9 victory over McGill at Varsity Stadium in the post-season playoff for the championship.McGill had finished a point ahead of the Mustangs over the six-game schedule, but because of Western’s 14-12 win over the Redmen in the season's opener, a playoff was in order.Western, beaten by McGill in Montreal a week before, made no mistakes im the Zrucial battle, rushing the Redmen off their feet with a driving first-half offensive from which the first- place team never recoverad.Among the post-game comments which attracted our attention was one of Bob MacFarlane, the Mustangs’ star back who also is a pretty fair track man.Said Big Bob: “It sure is a thrill to play on a second-place team that wins the championship.” Bob could just have easily said: “It's a thrill to play on a second- place team” for never before, in four years of football with the London, Ontario school had he played on a Western team that didn't finish in at least a tie for top honours. For Johnny Metras, the win was a great personal triumph, for it came at the top of a season during which his team had experienced rough times and during which one Montreal sportswriter had even gone so far as to advise Metras to retire to the more secure job of Athletic Director at Western, in an attempt to save face, Just what Metras would have to save face for, after an overall record at Western of 27 wins and only 2 losses prior to this year is unknown, but anyway, that was the comment of the Montreal scribe. Before the game, with McGill favoured at 7-5 odds, it seemed that even Dame Fortune had turned her back on the prosperous Metras, as his star, Jack Parry, was definitely out of action, and his ace kicker, Jack Matthews became a last minute casualty. But the Mustangs, led by Doug Gray, who had his sore arm frozen before the game and grimaced every time he threw a pass, pulled it out with a long fourth-quarter pass and some tight defensive football in the waning moments. For the Redmen, only Rocky Robillard, their diminutive captain, playing his last game of college football, was up to par, the Rock counting all of the McGill points on a convert, a 40-yard placement and a brisk 57-yard touchdown jaunt that put McGill back into the ball game in the third quarter. But the big Red machine didn't have anyone to go with the Rock, and Gray and a couple of fellows named George Arnott and Blake Taylor, who were deadly on defense were enough to give Western its slim victory.+ TENNIS IN NOVEMBER The Jack Kramer-Pancho Gonzales-Pancho Segura-Frank Parker- Bobby Riggs (Mr.Riggs is the promoter, a great come-uppance from the days in lower Los Angeles when his friends used to refer to him by such sobriquets as “Stinky”) pro tennis troupe comes into the Forum in Montreal this week for a one-nighter and the match should be a decided improvement over the Riggs-Kramer affair in the city two years ago.The series is closer this time, for the simple reason that it hasn’t been going as long, with Kramer once again asserting his net superiority.Although the press agents employed by Mr.Riggs to fill the pockets of the Messrs.Kramer and Gonzales with that glittery gold, to say nothing of presenting a sizeable bulge in the pockets of the afore-mentioned Mr.Riggs himself, have been grinding out copy at a furious rate explaining Pancho’s singular lack of success as a result of his inability to speedily adapt himself to changing lights and court surfaces, it still must be true that Big Jake is too much tennis player for the king of the amateurs.Yet, Pancho is putting up a better display than Riggs did, and the two tennis stars should provide a very interesting evening indeed.Hockey Rinks, Ski Runs Ready For Busy Season zig-zag
