taken up the cause of both and for the information of the general public they have listed each person's privileges.Those red flags you've seen dotting intersections throughout the tity for a few hours collectors this means very little except that their loads may be heavier.Theirs is a never-ending campaign against having refuse and dirt left around homes, city streets and backyards.This unglamorous but essential service is carried on in Westmount with an organization calling for much executive work and engineering skill.There are problems of labour, and disposal of tons of material rain or shine, with a minimum of interruption.In fact when interrupted by legal holidays such as is coming up on Tuesday, householders are so concerned that often authorities have to publicly advertise what is to be done.¥ The lot of the collector transportation They work week after week, finds Putters Club Hold Last Social Night The Westmount Putters Club had their last social evening Mon- Beetles shows that compared to local garbage men, Pheidippides, who ran the original marathon from Marathon to Athens, was a piker.Since refuse in Westmount is left at the back of houses, the men must walk an average of 100 feet each way to pick up and bring back the garbage to the truck or cart, take back the empty can and then go to the next house.That means four trips of 100 feet each time — four hundred feet of walking for each house.Therefore the men need only collect from 13 houses to walk a mile.They do many more than 13 houses per day.CITY IS FAVOURED In most parts of the Island, residents must put their refuse out on the street but in our city, our eyes are spared this ugly spectacle.Wherever there are lanes, the garhage is picked up in the rear of the house and this involves plenty of extra labour and expense for the municipality.Actual cost of garbage collecting in Westmount in 1948 was 9.3 cents per dwelling.As picking up is done twice a week, this means that for 18.6 cents a week the householder gets rid of all his refuse, only half the cost of a package of cigarettes.Filled vehicles run to the dis- (Continued on page 4) Boys Club Drive Total Is $48,248, Rotary the past week another $1,- 490 was brought in, including one donation of $1,000, the rest being made up of 15 smaller donations.Frank Kenwood, member of the club, was the main speaker at the meeting and he reported on the recent district conference in Ottawa.He told the members that a director of Rotary International stated that “Rotary is a great movement not moving greatly.” The director was urging the rejuvenation of Rotary spirit and he also said, “Intentions are not enough”.FEW FROM CITY Mr.Kenwood said that the main purpose of the conference was to meet other Rotarians but he regretted that there were not more of the Westmount Club ‘present.Only four went to Ottawa.Another conference speaker urged that Rotarians follow but one objective and not confuse issues by jumping from one thing to another before the first is completed.An advocate of sportsmanship recommended that instead of -{ awarding trophies for the winners of sports events, a trophy be donated to the team getting the most votes from other teams in a league as being the best sports.Play the game for the game itself was the idea behind his statement, according to last week from Scoutmaster Larry Do- herty of St.Augustine’s Troop.Mr.Doherty has since cleared up much of the misunderstanding which was created upon receipt of his letter.Apparently, the main point of this disagreement hinged upon the supposed non-publication of a report of the two floor hockey games St.Augustine's played with the Navy League.Unfortunately, the reason why this was neverk printed was because this writer never received it.Trinity Memorial Last Monday's meeting, Sixer John Ancrum led the opening ceremony and Grand Howl, which was attended by 29 Cubs.Three presentations Changes, Changes, Changes There will be some changes made in the Westmount Protestant schools set-up come September, 1949.And the changes make interesting reading.Frank Sharpe, the man who has done such a magnificent job in giving Westmount Junior High School a varied athletic program second to none in this province, and probably in this whole Dominion, will move his books and properties a little along Western avenue to King's School.Mr.Sharpe is scheduled to move in there as principal.He should be a good one., Those who have watched this Junior High athletic program mushrooming into something reals ly praiseworthy are hoping that Mr.S's new position will give him enough leisure time to get that promised book written.The book is going to be a description of the WJHS program with hints for those starting out in other schools with the idea of building a proper, well-regulated program of extra-curricular activities.The second change is that woodworking will not be taught as a regular school subject in the Westmount schools after the current school year.It will be an after-school, voluntary subject.This announcement comes after last Saturday's Star published à whole page of Among the signs of faulty posture are drooped head, round shoulders and back, flat chest, extended abdomen, knock knees and flat feet.In most instances these deformities can be entirely prevented, by attention in early childhood to posture and the simple rules of hygiene.: A child who shows a tendency toward round shoulders or any other postural deformity should be made to take a simple exercise for its correction.This should be practiced regularly morning and night.This consists of standing erect with hands clasped behind the neck.The body is then brought slightly forward, drawing the shoulders and elbows as close as possible together.Then the erect position is resumed with the hands still clasped behind the neck.The time given to this exercise may be gradually increased as the child becomes accustomed to it.It should never be continued to the point of fatigue.Of course, there are many other forms of exercise each suited to a particular deformity.The child should never be scolded for his slouching or careless posture.But he should be gently corrected and taught to walk, stand and sit correctly.Early education in the establishment of good postural habits will help prevent certain constitution al disturbances.Where habitual faulty position is the result of rickets, poor hy« glene, malnutrition or mental overstrain, it may be overcome by correction of these faults.If it results from some congenital defect, such as curvature of the spine netrating to the scalp when it on .wep or other orthopedic condition, medical advice must be sought.pi T4 ces oly ow Ted ein TtHitissisrsnmans iran tacens.HODGE BROS.tv Westinghouse ELECTRICAL re 7s, WESTINGHOUSE AUTOCRAT TOASTER Ingleaming chrome with plastic feet.Toasts two slices both sidesatthe same time.Finger-tip if for easy removal.$15.50 WESTINGHOUSE TURNOVER TOASTER Bright, modern functional design with cool plastic feet.Toasts two slices at once.A he “Breakfast ble, $8.99 Solves ALL the newlywed’s cooking problems.Roaster-Oven plugs into any electrical outlet .roasts meat and fowl to perfection .cooks a complete oven dinner.bakes delicious pies, cakes, cookies and bread.Here's just the thing for a kitchenless apartment or light house- kecrins 659,50 MODEL With all the Westinghouse quality features especially designed for the kitchen where space is limited.Four 5-speed surface heaters and "True- $230 Temp" Oven.' 5362 SHERBROOKE WEST AUTHORIZED WESTINGHOUSE RADIO & APPLIANCE SERVICE Complete with oven-ware dish set.AIM "YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD STORE" (Near Prud'homme) = WESTINGHOUSE DELUXE ADJUSTOMATIC IRON An efficient, streamlined, lightweight iron with a cool, comfortable handle and permanently attached Eas nsec $12.95 WESTINGHOUSE STANDARD ADJUSTOMATIC IRON Designed to allow ease of ironing around butions and seams.Finger-tip heat control.A gift that makes the Sener pec! $9.99 NOW IS THE TIME TO LET US REPAIR THAT RADIO OR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE EL.4540 FTL OU re pes + eS I PONREIasIseiIetesttsnstatovedatsartasdacsdbbecaconse © AL “€ tm ia NS pére re D SE MT ee A = Two-thirds of the men inter- ==” “steak and potatoes,” remains a 3 : @aap EIGHTEEN 7 THE EXAMINEN, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, MAY 30, 20 oa — .LC.eu.> Der a i FE COTTON FOR MEN and dress shirts, they still prefer .* 0 tL co, : .ji hy Cotton, like the proverbial cotton to other fabric fibres, McGilp School Dancers fo be Seen in “Colorf: ul P rogram o Ze.> Lure fm eee me PS a.- a a rr i mL EWE TI erred : erennial favorite among _| viewed voted for cotton as their me ’ B it of an ote among the ma choice for shirts and pajamas.;
