, The Westmount Municipal Association Spring Meeting to be held Tuesday night in Victoria Hall, at 8.15 p.m., will take the form of an open forum and discussion will be centred around the subject of “Recreation in Westmount”.Master of ceremonies for the occasion will be Christopher Ellis, well known in the district for his ability to handle such discussions._ Principal speakers at the meeting will be R.S.White, who will speak on “Com- ‘munity Recreation”; Mrs.John O'N.Gallery, whose subject will be “An Observer's Viewpoint”; Following the speakers will be a question period open to thosex in attendance.Captain William Bowie of the Parks and Playgrounds Department of Welfare Federation will assist in this by acting as technical advisor.He is well qualified fer this position as his knowledge of recreation problems is Dominion wide, After the question period, presentations will be made to former Mayor R.P.Adams and former Aldermen G.L.Fowler, W.S.Greene, W.F.Macklaier, K.C., and J.Senecal, K.C.Rene Perrault, More Commercial Buildings For | Sherbrooke St.” The opening of Sherbrooke street a block east and west of Greene Avenue for commercial buildings, the recent increase in business taxes, and the new West- mount business directory were all discused Wedneday night at a general meeting of the Business Association of Westmount.Up until the meeting the association did not have a constitution but one was drawn up and adopted Wednesday night.It was decided that the association should write to the City Hall in forthcoming years and ask them to discuss whether or not it was necessary to raise the business taxes, before going ahead.x president of the Municipal Association, Paul Viau, president of the Business Association of West- ruount, and Donald Ross, president of the Rotary Club will make the presentat.ons which will be in the form of illuminated scrolls commemorating the service of these former members of the City Council to Westmount, It is felt that more organization for a planned recreational program is needed in Westmount and the Municipal Association feel that the Rotary Club of West- mount will be particularly interested ir: the subject up for discussion because of the fact that the” Rotarians are at present engaged in a drive for $103,000 to build a Unity Boys’ Club clubhouse.The recreation committee of the Municipal Association have pushed the reconditioning of the West- mount Athletic Grounds and they figure it is now time to find out what other people think and to get their ideas on what should be done about the recreational situation in this city and how.The association feels that this (Continued on Page 2) and Leonard W, Taylor, speaking on ‘Benefits of a Co-ordinated Policy”.Sub-Post Office Opens Monday At 4828 Sherbrooke A new sub-Post Office will open at 4828 Sherbrooke Street West on Monday, according.to word received from the Hon.D.C.Abbott, K.C.,, M.P.for West.mount-St Antoine, and confirmed by the Post Office Dee partment.This ends the problem of not having a convenient place.to buy stamps, etc, for west-end Westmount, after an absence of the usual postal facilities in that area for the past several weeks.- The situation was brought to Mr.Abbott's attention by the Westmount Municipal Associas tion, who were backed by the Business Association of West.mount and several other local clubs.The fact that the sub-station will again be in a store kills the Municipal Association's hope for a separate Post Office.However, the store proprietor is James Rooney, a veteran of the last war, who served as a Sere geant with the Black Watch.Quebec Law Incorporates Best Parts Of All Foreign Laws — Justice Collins “To ensure the liberties of its citizens and the equality of justice, a nation must live by the rule of law,” the Honourable Mr.Justice Frederick T.Collins told members of the Rotary Club of Westmount at their weekly luncheon meeting in Victoria Hah on Wednesday.Mr.Collins’ topic was “The Administration of Justice in the Province of Quebec” and he traced the history of Quebec law.saying that as arbiter of the law, the judiciary has no light weight on its shoulders.“Many of our laws come to us from France and England,” the speaker continued, “but the chief source of our law in Quebec is French.The law of France in turn was founded on the old Roman Law ard upon Canon Law.“In 1759, after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham English law was introduced into Canada.It is Teutonic in origin.” The speaker then stressed the point that Quebec law now com- ; Wesley, in a grand slam return to their winning ways of previous years, also turned in an outstanding performance last week in a basketball game with Iona Seniors.They took the -Tona boys into camp by a 53-11 score, being in no trouble at any time during the game.Congrats to Scoutmaster Lionel Leighton for the fine work of the Wesley Seniors .Lionel was just recently appointed as District Scoutmaster for Senior Scouts .more congrats due, and good luck, too .Senior Scouting has a great future ahead of it.Badge Corner The May Badge List:-—1st Class Tests: — First Aid, Wednesdays, May 4th and 11th; Mapping, Thursdays, May 5th and 19th; Es- |.timations, Wednesday, May 18th.Badges: — Artist, Mondays, May behind him.In fact, during the + "9th (instruction) and 16th (test); Cyclist, Monday, May 9th; Interpreter, Wednesday, May 1lth; Laundryman, Tuesday, May 17th; Pathfinder, Thursday, May 26th; Gardener, register with your SM or Western HQ now; Rescuer and Swimmer, Neil Cameron, DE.9021, for appointment.Badge Competition; Badge Pennant for March won by St.Luke's United Troop.The May badge list is the last one for this season .Good Scouting wishes for this summer are extended to all from the Western Area Badge Committee under chairman Harry Whiston-.and congrats from this corner to the Badge Chairman and his committee for a job well done! It's only human to want to collect possessions around us — but the trouble is that many However, there are ever 50 many space-saving ideas that add, not only to the roominess of a home, but to its beauty as well There are, for instance, prefebricated storage units.These are made up for any room in the house — living room, dining room, kitchen or bedroom.Some of them have drawers and some have open shelves.| * lend themselves to the collecting In the dining room, these storage units can be used for holding china, silver and linen, thereby doing away with the necessity for a chin: cabinet or a buffet or both.In the living room, storage units are ideal for holding books and magazines, radios and records, vases and all sorts of ornaments, You can see what a space-saver this would be.It would do away with bookcases and extra tables, and would leave room on the remaining tables.Or, you can make a hinge for a section of a unit — a door that opens down flat — put a chair in front of it, and — presto — you have a writing desk! Perhaps your furniture is the old-fashioned massive kind.This type of furniture is lovely to look at but oh — the room it takes up! I know of one woman who recently bought, at an auction sale, an exquisite old spool bed and matching chest of drawers."She wanted them to furnish her guest room, but when she started arranging the room she discovered that the bed itself took up so much room that there just wasn’t space left for the chest of drawers, which is very wide as well as high.She was afraid she would have to dispense with this part of the cnsemble and get a little modern dresser, which would have completeïy spoiled the effect of ihe room, However, she hit on a happy soiution.Opening off the bedroom is a good-sized clothes closet.Sc she had the chest of drawers built into the bedroom wall, so that only the front shows in the bedroom — the rest of it protrudes into the clothes closet, where it doesn't matter if there are a few irregularities.Now all she has ‘0 do is go to the wall and open a drawer — and she has retained in her guest room the most drawers — its elegant front, wit the rich, lovely spool trim! Another space-saver in the bed- important part of the chest of room is the dressing table.The || news that many people make such dressing tables of orange crates and old radio cabinets and similar things.But how many of them utilize the shelves as well as the top?You can put ever so many things on these shelves — clothes, shoes and linens, not to mention combs and jars.To make this space easily accessible, make the skirt of your dressing table in two sections, go that it meets in the middle of the front and can be pulled apart to get at the shelves.Dress the shelves up by lining them with wallpaper in a shade ‘hat contrasts pleasantly with the skirt: The big game hunter was telling his wife all about his encounter with a tiger.“Yes,” he wound up, “it was a case of the tiger or me.” “I'm so glad it was the tiger, dear,” she said, Women’ omen 5 * “Gyrette Club of Montreal, Downes, 8756 Moncrieff gy , of Mount Royal.' “otherwise we Realn On Tuesday, May 3, the Salva.Avenue, admitted 1,597 patients |she is one of the few fine Can.Brana ma somo 2nd ATTRACTION —— portic tion Army Red Shield Campaign and the total number of 1,431 |adian artists who have consist- RE Cy ITS DRAMA Delightful.Tune-Filled Musical In | opens in Greater Montreal with births included 762 male and 679 |ently refused attractive financial vi G IN THE SWEEP OF IT8 olgntiul, ane obtair the objective of $165,000, announ- female babies.Hospital days for offers to go to the United States.MAGNIFICENT PRODUCTION y Re ces Campaign Chairman C.C.[mothers totalled 13,146 and for “Canada is my country” says Mil- P ?[> Thackray, the higher objective bables 12,694 with a full total of |dréd, “and I want to play to LOL nl:XLAS RENNIE the / this year due to capital expendi- 25,840 hospital days.Canadians.Money is not that im- GREAT PRODUCTIO ORGAN 8 signir ture at the Catherine Booth Hos.Pre-natal Clinles numbered 52 portant.” 1] have pital on Walkley Avenue, and to with attendance of 3,109 and the According to her antics in ra- .DOROTHY gl tion v mee rising costs in most Red number of free laboratory tests dio and in her variety shows, any- MALONE tries Shield Services.The drive will given were 828.thing can be expected of Mildred i ; there % conclude on May 16 and it is| During the year, laboratory, Morey when she appears at Bel- hig DON tres, anticipated the response of resi- laundry, boiler room and sterilizing mont Park.Her vocal range is as DeFORE fore dents of the Greater Montreal equipment amounting to a value Wide as that of Gracie Fields, JANIS kao avea will be as generous as ever of $10,900 was purchased and in- With whom she has often been P our to the appeal stalled.Other purchases included compared; and her spontaneous AIGE tout At the Catherine Booth Hospi.an incubator for the second floor comedy keeps her fellow artists WARNER most tal last year some 204 unmarried nursery, an electric floor polisher, busy trying to stay with her.“We BROS! j lot mothers and their babies were |12 spring-filled mattresses and d0 Not know exactly what Misa \\ of HTS cared for, representing a total of also upholstery and drapery re.|Morey will be doing”, reports Mr.PAR ca able 2,240 hospital days.During the placements.Billings, “but we have been warn.: gy seid \\ year a Women's Auxiliary with a Major expenditure 1s a necessity °3 to prepare for anything.A % vy, peel membership of 20 was organized.and it is service such as this, in oe an A In case | , 0 9 fine à * The Hospital, at 4400 Walkley caring for those unable to help expect her to’ take a high dive off ¢ | he mm the Thriller into the Back River.” i for” a lot - 5, ° TRINITY PL AYERS themselves, that Campaign funds bise C0.are used.To feed the sick, home- ‘ ) hn A PRESENT less and destitute, to give shelter ane HIN WATHE + MONTEOMENT CUET Ç EH ec L ! m » when needed, to assist in rehabili= "WALTER BRENNAN + JOANNE x tation of the unfortunate, and to ————— ‘ _ 5 onn oves ar y give succour when no other help ‘ ALSO! Wool is the principal material in a good carpet and forms the pile or tufted surface on which one treads.It has been found that Jute is the best yarn for the back of the carpet and thereby giving it a firm feel and making the carpet lie flat.As you know, Jute comes from India and grows in height of eight to ten feet and sometimes more.After it has grown to the re- 4 quired length, the fire is obtained by the process known as ‘ret.ting” In retting, the stems are immersed in ponds and streams and watched carefully and when the stalks begin to disintegrate the bark is cleaned off and the fibres stripped, graded and pressed into bales for shipment.Cotton Important Cotton, too, is important and the fibre is obtained from the seed boll.By selection and blending the right thread is produced.The chief material wool, can be spun in two different ways making either woolen yarn or worsted yarn.Woolen yarn is used mostly and is spun on cards and mules length of the carpet.The spools are taken to the looms and are clipped in an endless chain in correct order.As the loom weaves it takes each spool in turn with a pair of arms that works almost like human arms and inserts little tubes with thread of yarn into the fabric a V-shaped tuft and knives .come together and cut off the right amount, the arms replace the spool back in the chain and the chain moves to repeat the operation until the carpet is completed.In Gripper Axminster the design is made by quite a different process.The various colours are wound on bobbins and arranged in a special frame or “Creel” just behind the loom and each thread is brought to the looms and threaded into its own place.Over the top of the loom is a machine Known as a “Jacquard” which is controlled by a series of punched cards.These cards are so punched that when the loom or Jacquards are working they select the right colours for each row and bring them into a hori- Zontal line.Then the grippers come up; these are shaped like a bird’s beak, take hold of the end of each required thread and take off the necessary amount for a tuft.A knife comes across which cuts off this length and the grippers swing down to place the tuft in the fabric.This is repeated for each row until the carpet is completed.Wilton Carpets have yet another process.There are inexpensive Wilton Carpets, but it is on a Wilton loom the finest and closest carpets are usually made.They can be made of woolen yarn but the best are made of worsted, this allowing more tufts to the inch and gives a finer appearance to the carpet.Wilton carpet is very seldom made with more than five colours, these are selected and formed into a pattern by a different process.Bobbins containing dyed yarn are arranged in a ‘Creel’ and of the five colours used the one required is raised by a jacquard to the top of the fabric being woven, as in the gripper loom.Now a strpi of steel as wide as the height of pile required, is placed under the coloured yarn.When the coloured threads drop again they with fibres criss-crossed giving a In spinning, great care must be in blending the various portions.In the olden days dyes had to be obtained from plants and natural Next comes the design and here the Artist does his work.In designing a carpet many factors have to be taken into consideration, for example, different countries prefer different designs; then there are designs for hotels, theatres, ships and air liners.Therefore the artist must have a vast knowledge of carpet lore and colour harmony and must keep in touch with modern trends and, most of all, must know quite a lot about the technical side of carpet making and the limitations to each carpet.He must then be able to produce the design on a Special squared paper where each Square represents a tuft of the final carpet, By this you can see he must be a real artist and have a lot of experience, Weaving Processes Now comes the weaving.In the Orient this is done by hand looms and each knot tied by hand.In Spool Axminster the design is bobbins the full width of the car- pn the design the setters use 2 Separate threads of coloured cs side by side on the bobbin the correct colour according to h design, then with great speed € colour is changed to correspond with the next row until a Spool has been wound to corres- Pond with every row for the Joan Crawford In her Award- Winning Role at the Monkland “Mildred Pierce,” the screen adaptation of James Cain's hard- boiled saga of a soft-hearted lady, starring Joan Crawford in her Academy Award-winning role, returns by popular request to the Monkland Theatre Saturday until Tuesday.“Mildred Pierce” is a taut and tense film-fashioning of Cain's fascinating transom-peek into the lives of some of our less desirable neighbors and into the heart of an ill-omened woman.Also starring Zachary Scott and Jack Carson, “Mildred Pierce,” is, in turn, heart-warming, coldly analytical and intensely personal.In it Joan Crawford crowns her distinguished career with a performance which is superlatively “right”.For a little more than one hundred intense minutes, Miss Crawford IS the sacrificing, doubt- ridden, incorruptible Mildred Pierce, squaring off against the world, true to what she conceives to be a duty to her daughter, for 6 West-Enders Get RCAF Promotions Seventy-five Province of Quebec airmen are among the names of RCAF personnel in the semi-an- nual promotion list for airmen issued by Air Force Headquarters, Ottawa.The following are those from west-end Montreal with their new ranks and their addresses: — F/S A.MacAulay, 2112 Clare- mont avenue;
