on hand.Under the supervision of the Montreal Boys' Association, the club has grown in the number of memberships to such an extent that several buildings are being used to serve as club space. Some of the classes are held at Queens school while others are held at St.Stephens Church, still other boys meet in x the basement of a house.Until a suitable building is found for the club, all activities will remain in the present scattered surroundings. The new club director recently appointed by the Association, is Mr.Mariasine who comes to the club with a wealth of talent in sports and crafts. For the past 3 years he was sports supervisor for the East End Boys' Club and was responsible for a number of the basketball teams entering into final playoffs. This year the club found that it had many girls in the area who would be potential club members, and after much discussion decided to open a girls’ section.Girls now meet on Tuesday night for craft classes and gym work. Some of the senior section girls have formed a basketball team and are entering into a city league.Basket weaving, leather work, cord work, bottle winding, and woodwork are some of the more recent additions to the club list.In all of these classes the attendance is high and the leaders are having to deal with a minimum of time for each subject.Volunteer leaders and instructors are in short supply which makes the situation more diff'cult. It is imperative that the club activities go on, but the problems being faced by the director and staff are such, that only a centralized program could make things run more smoothly. If the problems of today's youth are to be remedied, they must have the necessary tools to remedy them themselves.Concert Planned To Aid Physically Handicapped The Cedar Association for Physically Handicapped Adults will present a concert at the Plateau Auditorium on Friday, November 26, to secure proceeds vitally needed by the Association to as- gist in its work. The Cedar Association was formed in 1946 when a group of about one hundred physically handicapped adults banded together in an effort to help each other. The organization has since widened its ambitions and hopes to provide wheel chairs and surgical apparatus for its members and facilities that will enable them to learn the handicrafts they choose or to develop any special talents they may possess.Artists in the concert will include Inez Morton, dramatic soprano; Mildred Norton, lyric soprano; Gerald Des Marais, baritone; and Maria Therese Paquire, accompanist. The committee arranging the concert consists of Mrs.Henri Beaudry, M.B.E., chairman; Mrs.D.Dansereau, vice-chairman; Mrs.A.Daigneault and Mrs.Frank McKenna, secretaries; Mrs, Owen’ Lobley, treasurer; Mrs.J.O.As- selin, and Mrs.G.Lafontaine, in charge of tickets; Mrs.A, Gar- neau, program; and Mrs.M.Hudson, publicity.Patrons of the Cedar Association are: W.Ashworth, F.Beique, A.Bronfman, D.Bremner, Mme P.Casgrain, O.B.E., J.Dodds, C.B.E., A.Dawe, Judge F.T.Enright, F, Faure and Mme Faure, M.B.E., Col.Andrew Fleming and Mrs.Fleming, M.B.E., J.M.Fraser, Hon, L.Gendron, Hon.Senator Leon Mercier Gouin, M.Gravel, Dr.H.Griffith, Dr.J, J.Griffith, Hon.Henri Groulx, D.E.Hamilton, Mr.F.B, Kilbourn, O.B.E., C.Kemp, Col.W.Leggat, O.B.E, M.C.M.B.Leman, Col.Owen Lobley, C.B.E., Col.A.Magee, Lady Marler, Dr.L.H.McKim, R.MacMaster, Hon.J.A.Mathewson, E, Montpetit, W.Molson, B.Morin, Mr.Morgan- Powell, Major General E.de B.Panet, M.Gerard Parizeau and Mme Parizeau, M.B.E, A.Pa- tenaude, Mme J.E.Perrault, Air Vice-Marshal A.Raymond, S.F.Rutherford, Judge I.Smith, P.F.Sise, Hon.Chief Justice A.S.Tyndale, P.Vaillancourt, E.Wins- low-Spragg.PRICE—THREE CENTS Miss Lois White Reports on Child Lecture Series Miss Lois White, Kindergarten Specialist and Associate Superintendent of the Westmount Baptist Church “Lower School”, reported last Monday evening to the parents and teachers of the Sunday School pupils on a series of lec tures, which she attended last summer at Chautauqua, N.Y., on the subject “Child Growth and Development”.Emphasizing the importance of home and schoo! relations, she said “American Education leaders are now urging that day teachers visit the homes of their pupils at least twice a year. This would help to promote the mutual understanding of the fact that there really are no problem children, only children with problems, who with the proper guidance may work out their own adjustments satisfactorily.” Visiting parents were impressed by the attractiveness of the programme and quarters provided by the Church for Nursery, Kindergarten and Primary children. The meeting also decided to continue throughout the winter the chartered bus service, which leaves Montreal West at 9.05 each Sunday Morning, in view of the great interest and support which is being shown by the parents in the area along the route. This bus is available to any who wish to attend the Sunday School and Church.PARKS DEPT.APPOINTS RECREATION SUPERVISOR Clifford Thompson who joined the staff of the Parks Department on November 15 was born in Montreal and has had considerable experience in the recreation field.During the war “CIiff” served five years in the Army, half of which was spent overseas.Returning to civilian life he entered Macdonald College-Handicraft Division receiving the Diploma at the completion of the course. He is also an active swimmer, canoeist and well versed in all.types of sport, MUNICIPAL ASSOC'N HOLD EXEC.MEETING The Executive Committee of the Westmount Municipal Association will hold their monthly meeting Monday evening. One of the important matters on the agenda will be the making of final arrangements for the Annual Meeting to be held in Victoria Hall on Tuesday, November 30, at 8 pan. "THE FXAMINEM, PAGE TWO = « Scouts & Cubs BY REG GROOME WESTMUUNT, FRIDAY, NUVEMDEM 19, 1990 2 By GEORGE HENDERSON The last month or so has been a struggle between the seasons.Old brother Autumn has fought a furious battle with his blood relation Summer, and now that he has at last won finds that within another month he will be forced to fight a duel to the death with ancient father Winter, The season's first snow has arrived already.Mr, and Mrs.House Holder of Westmount are discouraged.Their most popular pastime has vanished with the passing of summer; there will be no more gardening for another year, that is, no gardening on the out side. But if you are one of those industrious souls, endowed with a great love for plant life, the changing of the seasons will mean little to you.Your own home can be* your garden.Friday evening, St.Matthias Pack held a Tenderpad Investiture and Jan Grant became a member of the Pack. The floorball championship was played between the White and Red Sixes. The White Six won but not without a tough fight during the course of which David Gil- mour had his nose walked on, and Sean Mack knocked skulls with Allan Ross.In lieu of a trophy, two pounds of luscious jelly beans were awarded the visitors. Some of the First Star Cubs are coming along very well in their work and a few will likely be finished shortly, The Arca Badge Examiner visits the Pack tonight, so all those going in 5 for any badge at that time should remember to bring in their mate- | ME rial, especially those taking Gardener Badge.! to the rescue of a boy who was in danger of drowning in a rough sea at Littlehampton on August 11th this year.Mortlock, who was camping with his Troop at Southwoods, Arundel Park, was paying a visit to Little- hampton with a few Scouts. As he was about to enter the water a lady called his attention to a young bather floating some 25 yards out, and, although not a very strong swimmer, Mortlock swam out to the youth who was probably unconscious. As he was returning to shore with the boy a large wave overwhelmed them. The youth remained afloat and was rescued, but Mortlock had disappeared from view. One of the Scouts and another man swam around searching for him without success. He wag recovered thirty minutes later further along the shore but all attempts at artificial respiration were built on the walls near the windows, halfway up the window length. Most of the following plants will make beautiful window sill decorations when fresh flowers are hard to get and high in price.Bride's Myrtle, English Ivy, Palms (the best for this purpose being Kentias and Arecas), and Boston Fern. The following may also be used for table decorations: —Asparagus fern, Ardisia, Jerusalem Cherry, Begonias, small auricaria Primrose and Geranium. These plgnts should be replaced in the window after doing duty on the table as indoor plants.never thrive when away from light.See that your indoor plants are in no danger of freezing, and are protected from drafts of cold air.Once every day, however, let in fresh air at a little distance from the plants.Too much heat and too little air weakens and kills plants.Water your houseplants only when they really need watering, and then water thoroughly.Surface deep watering does more harm than good.Watering is governed by the temperature and the humidity of the room.Keep Geraniums on the dry side if not actively - growing Begonias and ferns in a room of 60 degrees to 70 will need water almost every day.Fegling the soil, judging the weight of the pot, or rapping the pot with your knuckles are other ways of telling when to water.A pot of soil that is wet sounds dead ; if dry, it gives an empty.ring.If a greater stock of house- rlants is desired it is not necessary to buy them, you can propagate them yourself. That is make slips yourself.Take shoots or tops of plants 4 to 6 inches long with firm, but not hard stem growth.Fill a pot with sandy soil and insert cuttings around the edge.Make the holes with a stick and press soil around cutting firmly.Shade from the sun and keep only just moist. When growth starts, pot singly.RES ball they can take it”, They have taken it, physically and mentally, for nearly a decade.: Victorious against Nazism, the British now face a: fight against Communism.Again they are in the front line. This time the attack is more insidious and this time her Allies are less numerous. The fight is against a false idea rather than a physical foe.It is an idea which will, if unchecked, crucify civilization.Religious leaders everywhere recognize the menace, Spiritual aid to Britain can be as effective as material assistance.Material aid is likewise essan- - tial.On high levels the Canadian and American governments have gone to the financial rescue of the British. On a more humble strata individuals may contribute to the comfort and encouragement of their friends and relatives of the Isles through subscriptions to such organizations as the United Emergency Fund for Britain which is Headed by: philanthropic Canadians who have secured important concessions in transportation and other costs, to stretch the Canadian dollar beyond its normal value in terms of goods. The combination of spiritual and material assistance will at this time, further the cause of freedom.Aid to Britain is a practical as well ag a wholesome and generous form of contribution to the struggle to which the Western peoples are now committed.Prayer and good works have always made a formidable and upon roads and railways to link the reclaimed areas with important centres in the Nile Valley., COAL 845 QUERBES AVE.A Premium Anthracite It is slow burning — guard the children’s health with an even lemperature Vipond-Tolhurst Limited °TA.7271 Loyola Holds Social Tonight This evening many a West- mount socialite and fisticuff fan will hurry out to Loyola College for the “K.O.Social”.This knockout event is a combination dance and boxing show, and from now on will be an annual feature at this Sherbrooke St, West educational centre, .The boxing show, featuring Mec- Gill Inter-Collegiate champions, Loyola contenders, and Golden Glovers, commences at 8.15 p.m.in the gymnazium, which is located in the new Central Building. At 9.45 p.m.the social end of the evening will get underway with two separate dances. One will be held in the College Foyer and music will be provided by the Mellowaires’ Orchestra under Jim Shannahan.Only those with couples’ tickets will be admitted to this dance, At the same time the stags will gather together at Mme.Blais’ new cafeteria to dance to the recorded music of the Eaton Band Box.The “K.O.Social” is sponsored jointly by the Loyola College Athletic Ass'n and the Sodality. No Shortage of Crude Oil Fields in World Fuels of the future may be made by synthetic production of petroleum products, but the processes are still in the experimental stage and too costly to compete with crude oil, according to the current issue of the Imperial Oil Review.“Every year some prophet of doom raises his voice in the land to declare that the world is running out of oil,” the article says.“Recently, because demand for oil products has sky-rocketed beyond the capacity of the industry's transportation, refining and other facilities, these prophets have been making more noise than usual, “This situation has aroused special interest in the work of scientists who are experimenting with substitutes for crude oil as a source of gasoline and other fuels.Their success has been publicized to the point where the public may make the mistake of thinking a kind of “Philosopher's Stone” has been found by which men can turn practically any substance into oil with little effort.“But at present there is still plenty of crude oil.Oil fields are diminishing assets — once the oil is taken form the earth new fields must be discovered and they are ER 19, 1918 The Suffolk town of Laven- ham remains one of the most complete and unspoilt of medieval towns to be found anywhere in England.Once an extremely busy town, it owned its prosperity to the wool trade which flourished there from the 14th century. From the 17th century, however, this trade moved to other parts of England and the importance of Lavenham declined. This decline in prosperity is illustrated by the dilapidated condition of many of the old buildings in Lavenham, and in 1944 the Lavenham Preservation Society was formed to protect and preserve these historic old places. The more important of the buildings have been restored, but money is still needed for their maintenance, so an appeal for £6,000 was recently launched. The money received in response to this appeal will be used for the purpose of restoring and maintaining the more interesting of the medieval buildings, including many cottages. If Lavenham is to be viewed as a complete medieval town it is important that cottages are preserved as well as the more important buildings.Four thousand pounds of the money received is needed to preserve the Guildhall and its group of buildings, and to create a fund for their national NEW OIL MAY REPLACE LINSEED IN PAINTS From the jungles of Sierra Leone and Nigeria soon may come a new commercial substitute for the linseed ofl so essential in paint making. The substitute is known as conopher oil. After four years of searching, a British research team has found that the woody conopher vine bears seeds containing a cream- colored oil closel yresembling linseed in quality and odor.Extensive tests have indicated that the oil behaves well in paints and "| varnishes, Keep Medieval Village From Being Spoiled upkeep. The National Trust have agreed to take on the care of this group of bulldings after their restoration.Lavenham is hoping to attract many visitors from overseas, pare ticularly from America, where, when the wool industry fell off, many Lavenham familles emigrated.Americans have always admired the town and quite a number have visited i.in.order to trace their forefathers in the par= ish records.More than one has tried to buy a Lavenham building in order to transport it to the United States. However, up to the present time the medieval town has resisted all efforts in this direction, and Lavenham remains a town of English history, complete and unspoilt.Your Own Phone Answered By Direct Private Wire at any Hour of the Day or Night! Brown When the first fall of snow comes we think of furs and our new winter hat.Judging by the fur hats and fur trimmed hats being shown recently at several of our smart \\ fashion shows, this style has really gone to our heads.Yesterday I dropped in to see 4 ‘Berthe, of BERTHE MODES, 1488 Sherbrooke St.W., just next door to the C.S.L.Gift Shop, and was I ever fortunate for Berthe was holding a private hat show of her own, as she had just finished making a collection of hats, and was trying them on for size and fit.To try and tell you which one I liked best, that, I cannot, because they were all so fascinating.Of course they are all exclusive models of Berthe Modes. They have been designed especially for short hair, and also for warmth.Th first hat was a brown close fitting felt cloche, with a front cuff of beaver, finished with a tie bow of felt.Berthe said that this year the fur beret will be very popular, and she has made one up of black persian lamb, which would look attractive on any age.Next came a brown felt bonnet shaped hat, with the front finished in mink trimmed with two exquisite pink roses placed very coquettishly over the side, the effect is finished off with -a veiling tied under the chin. This hat, I told Berthe, will really steal the show. The last hat is like unto a poem, for it has character, poise, individualy, in fact, everything. It is a brown jersey profile draped mink, and with plenty of that rich little animal across the front. If you are looking for a fur trimmed hat, you will find it at BERTHE MODES, but be prepared to not know which one you will like best.* My Eating Place - I do hope that I am not tiring you in chalting so often about “My Eating Place” but when I wander down to the Mount Royal Hotel, and enter this famed glass enclosed Cafeteria, with its cheerful panelled ceiling and soft toned coloured walls, and oh, so much room in which to enjoy ones lunch, 1 often wonder if there are not many girls still unaware of what this splendid eating place has to offer. From now on vou business girls will be spending your lunch hour wandering around the stores, and not leaving much time for cating, so I would suggest vou get the habit of lunching at the Mount Royal Cafeteria, where food is served quickly, and sufficient tables are available to choose from.If you have been in the habit of having only a sandwich and tea for lunch, you will pay no more for it here, and you will be sure of being served immediately, leaving you plenty of time for shopping. If you are in the habit of having more for lunch, try the salmon and potato salad, a generous serving with rolls and tea, for $0.77.This is my favorite dish, and one which I consider to be ample. For the business man this is an ideal spot to lunch, where he can chat or read his noon paper, without the usual din found in large and crowded restaurants. If you want vour lunch to be short, quickly served and wholesome, then the Mount Royal Cafeteria is the one cating spot where this is to be found.+ * * TOR CLEANSING AND SOFTENING THE SKIN, use wet corn meal, Lemon juice is a good skin bleach and freckle lotion.+ * * For You Alone % Bette Davis Films at Westmount, Sun.“Give My Regards To Broadway," the new Technicolor musical opening Sunday at the West- mount Theatre, brings to the screen the warm, nostalgic and lively story of a grand (some called them “zany”) family of troupers who just wouldn't die when vaudeville did.Starring Dan Dailey, who scored a sensation in “Mother Wore Tights,” the unusual story with music features an outstanding supporting cast headed by Charles Winninger, Nancy Guild, Charlie Ruggles and Fay Bainter, The picture, garnished with singing and dancing (and fancy juggling thrown in for a good measure,) blends poignant drama and highhearted humor with unusual romance as it unfolds its saga of a family that carried Broadway with it wherever it went.“Give My Regards To Broadway” is the story of “Albert The Great & Family” who persisted in living—and hoping—in the golden era of vaudeville, although vaudeville whs dead, and movies obvioysly here to stay. There's Dad (Charles Winninger), “Albert The Great” himself, who can't forget the “big time”, and is waiting for its certain return. There's Mom (Fay Bainter), who seems almost as happy in calico as she was in tights. There are the lovely daughters (Batbara Lawrence and Jane Nigh) who let love break up the act.And there's Bert (Dan Dailey) who is the act, but who wins stardom in another way, The story starts when the final curtain falls on vaudeville in 1928.Although he accepts a job in an industrial plant — “between engagements”—Dad keeps rehearsing and improving the family act for the day when they return to Broadway, where they belong. The girls are impatient, and are ready to sacrifice the roar of public acclaim in the fuzzy future for wedding bells here and now.But Bert—he’s Dad’s pride, joy and last hope; talented from his toes to his fingertips and sure “headliner” unusuñl as it is exciting and heartwarming.Second Feature Bette Davis’ latest film, “Winter Meeting”, the added attraction, is her 57th film and her 46th starring role. She made her ALOUETTES OUT - This years edition of the Alouettes was the best that Lew Hay- man has had in his three years in Montreal, but it still wasn’t good enough to beat Ottawa’s Rough Riders on Saturday afternoon in the Capital.Sporting a two point serles lead going into the tussle, the Als just couldn’t cope with the defensive and offensive strength of the Riders, who were in the process of playing their best game of the season. They outcharged, ‘outran, and outfought the Montrealers, but most important, they outthought Hayman’s team, If the game had been played on a dry field, there is no telling how high the score might have gone, in fact the Als were lucky to get away with only 15 points being scored on them.Erle Chipper, usually reliability itself, missed four field goal attempts, while the Alouettes were being so completely outplayed that they couldn’t get beyond their own 3£-yard line until well on in the fourth quarter. They couldn’t crack the tough Ottwa ling, and it was ‘too muddy.to run the ends effectively.‘On the other hand, Tony Golab and Howie Turner were waltzing through the Montreal line at ease, and Bob Paffrath was proving himself a great heavy ball passer with his six touchdown, So Ottawa goes up against Frankie Filchock's Hamilton Tigers on Saturday, and barring unforeseen circumstances they should have litle trouble witli the crew from the Ambitious City.worry will be Filchock's passing, and with defenders like Don Loney; whose foot should be ready, Steve Karrys, and Doug Smylie, they should get by the Tigers.Thelr next worry will be that good Calgary team, but it the Riders can keep playing at their Saturday peak, they should be the next Grey Cup holders.NOTES Ottawa is a great football town, probably the best in the country, and is the foremost producer of home grown talent in Canada.Playing regularly for the Riders are Joe Asquini and Buck Rogers, from Ottawa Tech, and Brian Lynch from Ottawa St.Pats.Then there's young George MacPhall, with Ottawa Tech last season, and the fastest man on the Ottawa team. Many stores in the Capital City were featuring football displays, including goed luck signs and pictures of the various members of the Rough Riders team ., There’ are eight teams in the Ive League now, with Brown, Pennsylvania, three, Princeton, Yale, and Harvard.Despite their scholastic reputations, the fact remains that these teams play the worst football of any American college conference, It's been said that they are so bad they even have trouble beating each other .Men!
