Perhaps it’s because we never met one — to know it, that is — since mathematically only one person out of every 1461 folks is likely to be born on leap- year day.In Westmount, at least five newcomers joined that exclusive group by being born at the Herbert Reddy Memorial Hospital on Sunday.Exclusive is right! Gangsters Force Taxi Operator To Give Up Cab Violent theft of a taxi from its chauffeur in Westmount was reported to the Westmount Police Department when driver A.Charron, of 3593 Gertrude Street, shortly after the theft occurred on Friday evening, reported to police that his taxi had been stolen after he had been hailed by four young men in Verdun and directed to an address on Prince Alhert Avenue above Sherbrooke Street. He stated tha‘ upon arrival at the destination, one of the passengers put what he thought to be a revolver at his back and told him to get out of the car, that they needed it more than he did.He got out, and the last he saw of his.car, it was turning east on Cote St.Antoine Rd.On Saturday, the Westmount Police Department received word that the stolen taxi had been recovered in Brockville, and two men arrested after a chase which followed a holdup at the Colonial Inn, 13 miles west of Brockville. The two accused were remanded in Brockville without plea until Monday when they pleaded guilty to charges of holdup. They come up for sentence today. They later will be charged with theft with violence down here.Other arrests are expected to follow.TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS Five traffic accidents of a minor nature, in which no one was injured, are listed as having occurred in Westmount during the past week.5, 1948 PRICE—THREE CENTS DOCTOR MAKES NEW TONIC PAGE TWO TPS Rotarians Must Observe High Standard Of Ethics Rotary is a world-wide movement, based on service and goodwill among men whose ideals cannot be realized unless they can be applied to actual living, declared Rotarian P.G.Delgado, Superintendent of Public Works, City of Westmount, speaking to members of the Rotary Club of Westmount, this week.Addressing himself primarily to the newer members of the club, he advised them to be conscious always that they were privileged individuals in being chosen to join the ranks of Rotary, that they represent their calling to other Rotarians and that they must represent their club to members of their calling. They should fulfil this trust * and responsibility by maintaining the highest ethical standards in business and personal life, he said. Moreover, Rotarians have the obligation of being at all times informed about all the activities of .their club, in order to help it fulfill its prime function of service.More International Than UN Rotary is more international than the United Nations, stated Mr.Delgado, since it is comprised of more than 300,000 members in many different countries, all pledged to the same spirit of serving their fellows, and not divided not so big that one might feel lost in it — each individual has his part to do as a part of the effort of the whole organization.Try to be among that group who do things, he advised his listeners, adding that the field for effort is enormous, but that great things can be accomplished collectively. The cement of a Rotary Club is fellowship, friendly intercourse and partnership, which promote the spirit of co-operation, he stated, recommending that his hearers attend the Rotary District Conference to be held in April to observe this truth. He added that political opinion and religious belief are the personal concern and right of all men, but discussion of these subjects is to be avoided within a Rotary club, since they can create disunity.Objects of Rotary are to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, said Mr.Delgado.In particular, they are to encourage and foster: development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service, high ethical standards in business and professions, recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve the community; application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal business and community life; and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional men united in the idea of service. This is the Rotary Creed, he stated, and fulfilment of it is a personal matter between a man and his conscience. It is a matter of heart as well as mind. Two Recreational (Continued from Page 1) tion, announcing and television.Keith Darbyson, age 26, born in Montreal. Before The Company's financial campaign, while not so successful as last year, came out just ten percent short of reaching its objective. There are a few returns still outstanding which may possibly put it over the top. With Spring on its way, boys of the 1st Company are getting anxious about seeing the band in full swing, so that it may take part in various parades.Every effort is being made to secure a permanent bandmaster, in order that things may get under way immediately.A number of members are now learning drumming and the bugle section is becoming stronger. The inter-Company basketball league will get underway immediately.A schedule is being drafted between the 1st, 6th and 8th Companies for the Jeffrey trophy. This trophy has not, as yet, been challenged and will be something well worth tackling for the 1st Company.eas eo.cal THR EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, MARCH Bth, 1948 ELECTED PRESIDENT Gordon W.McLean, vice-presi- dent, Levell and Christmas (Canada) Lid., whe has been elected the lower-cost sources gradually are being exhausted. For some time to come, higher compression should cut the amount of gasoline you use enough more than to offset the higher cost from either of these reasons.Cadillac, which now has a 7.25- to-1 compression ratio, probably will lead the parade. The next Cadillac line should offer about 8- to-1 compressor ratio — that is, the gasoline and air mixture in the cylinders will be pushed into one-eighth its original size before it is fired by the spark plug.Obviously this will greatly increase the force of the explosion and give greater speed and acceleration from the same explosive mixture.General Motors now has three cars running around the country, mostly here in Detroit, whose engines have 12'3-to-1 compression ratios. They are stock cars of one G.M.division.They have been compared with identical cars with standard 6.5-1 engines, about the same as your present car.Loaded with the same weight, one following the other, taking turns at leading and following, the high compression burns about 32 per cent less fuel than the standard motor. It is the general expectation that when one important car of- THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, A gaping hood frames GM's “Boss” Kettering and his experimental engine that spells higher compression, more miles-per-gallon.fers such fuel-saving, others must and will follow.General Motors, like all companies here, is very reticent about plans. But there are indications that high compression engines will be added to one GM car after another, generally at around 8-to-1, until all are on that level. Then, although by that time “Boss” Kettering should have the bugs ironed out for another step- up, the industry probably will wait for the oil business to catch up, before it takes another step toward the 12-to-1 goal.It appears now that while 12-to-1 is not the top, it is the point at which benefits start falling off so that greater compression becomes a doubtful improvement. The petroleum industry is worried about the high compression trend.Handled with discretion, experts feel' that the motorists will benefit. But there are several hurdles. After talking with several experts at the recent American Petroleum Institute meeting in Chicago, this correspondent believes the oil industry is afraid it will be blamed for things beyond its control.RADIO-PHONO COMBINATIONS EASY TERMS BOOTH kioo wieiilils — ESTAB 5774 SHERBROOKE W.{At Melrose Ave.) 20% DISCOUNT WHILE THEY LAST! and only in Russia is there any legal right to leisure. All the current twaddle about freedom is poppycock. The length of the working day and the number of such days in the week is the Mr.Shaw said: only true measure of possible* of mer tm SOs mm am ap cme ren composing what they like.A short time ago the Soviet Government ordered a purge of magazine writers who had been writing what they liked, and a decree was issued recently condemning certain musical composition and ordering the composers to conform to “socialistic realism”.Under the British democratic system Mr.Shaw has enjoyed long years of both leisure and freedom, and he has used that freedom to condemn the system that gave him his free- THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT.FRIDAY, MARCH 5th, 1048 freedom.”—The Oracle has spoken. Was there ever so much twaddle and poppycock condensed into so short a space before?Usually, in such oracular utterances, Mr.Shaw has rendered his twaddle entertaining by his wit and vernal jugglery. But in this instance he has confined himself to plain statements which are not only poppycock, but are obvious fallacies.Take the first sentence: “Russian Socialists are much more democratic than English and American ones.” What he should have said, and what he really meant, was that Russian socialists were more communistic than the others.Evidently Mr.Shaw agrees with Mr.Molotov that Communism is the only real democracy, and yet in the next sentence he says that the parliamentary party systems are ‘sham democracies’.But there is nothing sham about them if they are not democracies at all.If Communism is the true democracy, then the parliamentary system is something else — what is it?Mr.Shaw has lived under it long enough to know — much longer than he would have lived to exercise his wit and cynicism under a Communist system. Then he says, “Laws that are not totalitarian are not laws at all.Where there is law there is no freedom.” It is quite true to say that laws against murder, assault and robbery are totalitarian in their application, but it is not true to say that where such laws exist there is no freedom. Those laws, indeed, for the protection of freedom.Mr.Shaw confuses freedom with anarchy, which is a state of society in which there is no law, and he is thus himself talking poppycock. But he is no anarchist, for as a socialist he would want more laws.“Leisure alone can make us free,” says Mr.Shaw, “and only in Russia is there any legal right to leisure.” If leisure alone can make men free, then there is less feredom in Russia, at least among the working people, than in any country in the world.Whatever “legal right” they may have to leisure, the Russian workers have little opportunity to exercise that dom, and to praise a system that would take it from him.He has been free to write * and talk ‘“twaddle and poppycock”, from which he has reaped big profits and literary fame! In this same letter, Mr.Shaw said, “I am a Communist,” and he added, “Stalin is a first-rate Fabian.I am one of the founders of Fabianism, and as such very friendly to Russia.” That is an utter contradiction. The Fabians were opposed to Marxism, holding that socialism would be brought about by social reforms without violent revolution.Stalin is an out-and-out Marxist, and his part in the violent revolution, and his present methods of forcing communism upon the nations of Eastern Europe, are sufficient to prove that he is no Fabidn. If anyone but Bernard Shaw were to write such twaddle in these days no intelligent editor would waste paper upon it, Yet Mr.Shaw has made a good thing out of it.In the old days the court jesters in England were allowed leisure and freedom to talk poppycock, but they were not taken seriously."NO-MAN'S LAND" —Page in the Louisville Courier-Journal TOPICS OF THE WEEK By R.J.DEACHMAN The Hens Don't Know About ‘Planned’ Economy Down in New Zealand there is a place called Canterbury named after a famous old cathedral city in England. There in the days of free enterprise roosters crowed, hens laid, chickens flourished, and the owners of chicken farmg waxed fat and prospered for the hens worked faithfully at their jobs and eggs by the carload moved into the cities to gladden the hearts of men.Last winter all this changed.Hen feed was aear and hard to get, fixed prices for eggs were low. It’s hard for a planner to sit on two stools at once, provide cheap eggs for city people, high prices for egg producers.Alas, New Zealand hens, during past periods of opulence, had grown “choosey”.They wanted wheat, and there was none, they were offer pollard and bran.Pollard, it seems, is.finely ground bran with a trace of poor flour in it, New Zealand hens refused to produce eggs oun pollard. They were right about it, it couldn't be done, they hadn't the capacity to dn it.Earlier in the season I read in a New Zealand paper these anguished words: “During this winter the people will be lucky if they get one egg per month per butter coupon.” That's the consumer's problem, it ties th eegg to the butter, more complications, but what about the egg producer? Here is the situation as one newspaper correspondent saw it: “Thinking egg production uneconomical, if not impossible under the present set-up with the ‘government ruling the roost” — piffling job for labor isn't it?— “dozens of New Zealand farmers arec losing down or reducing flocks severely.” What could the harassed poultry men do.They have a planned economy in ‘New Zealand. What's sauce to the roosters is not always sauce to the hens. The poultry men decided to appeal to the government.Life in a planned economy is not easy — for the planners or the planned. They have to please everybody and that's difficult except in the frist few months after an election when a cabinet, flushed with victory can tell the visiting delegations to go to Coventry.* * * The poultry farmers decided to appeal for justice, for the poultry, fi not for themselves, They carried their story to the Stabilization Commission, the Internal Marketing Department, The Prime Minister, Mr.Peter Fraser, and the Minister of Finance, Mr.Walter Nash.Nothing happened. The roosters stopped crowing, they had nothing to crow about. The hens took on a sad-eyed and weary look.Just at this moment the government sent — what dé you think — not wheat but oats, good heavens, oats for laying hens! “Ooats”, wrote Samuel Johnson in his dictionary of the English language, “is a grain which is generally given to horses but in Scotland feeds the ‘people.’ Oats, especially in the form of oatmeal grows great men, — Scotland bears - witness to that obvious fact — but hens wont’ lay on oats. The hens wept, they had never heard of this, they looked at the oats coldly, that wasn't the thing they wanted, the eggs were not forthcoming.I often wonder what socialism does in an emergency. There will always be conflict of opinion.Mr.Coldwell, English born, and knowing how horses prospered on English oats might have made the same mistake. On second thought he might have sent the wheat, Bulk marketing is now giving our farmers prices far.below the world’s market level.Mac- Innis, a stern covenanter, but a decent chap nevertheless, would have stuck to oats.If oatmeal is good enough for the working class, oats should be good enough for hens, even if they could not produce on it.Clarence Gillis of Cape Breton South looking always for a higher standard of living for men and hens would hold out for wheat, Never once would Gillis agree to lowered standards of living for hens or for voters. This is a wicked story — it deals with vested interests, the right of hens to wheat, the right of New Zealanders to eggs. The planne»s will always have a hard time making ends met.The trouble is to keep hens laying when the price of eat goes up and hens must live on oats.Life will never be a symphony, we must get used tn the discords — that too is a part of life, even in a planned economy.“.TIME TO MOVE “You say your mother-in-law threw a chair at you?” said the magistrate.“Yes, sir.” “And then your wife threw a table at you?” “Yes, sir.” “And what made you leave the house ?” “I “saw , my daughter looking thoughtfully at the sideboard.” an pS Mrs.R.Holden Service Held Funeral service was held on Wadnesday afternoon for Mrs.Rufus C.Holden, of 321 Kensing- ton, avenue, who died at her home on ‘Monday in her 85th year following a lengthy illness.Widow of Rufus C.Holden, whose father founded the firm of Ames, Holden and Company, Mrs.Holden was the former Madge Louson. She was born in Montreal in 1863 and lived here all her life. She was a long-timé resident of Westmount, having resided for the past fifty-five years at her residence, 321 Kensington avenue.Active ‘and well-known in Y.W.- C.A.work, she had been a vice- president and honorary vice-presi- dent. She also was interested in the work of Erskine and Ameri- zan United church.Mrs.Holden is survived by two aons, R.Clement Holden, K.C., and J.Hastie Holden; a daughter, Mrs.Sydney E.Hodgeson, eight grandchildren and three great-grand- children.A brother, D.S.Louson, also survives.Rev.G.R.Cragg officiated at the funeral service, held at 321 Kensington avenue.Interment took place in Mount Royal Cem- aterv.Choir and Organ Recital to be Held The: second of this season's organ and choir recitals will be given at Westmount Baptist Church after the evening service on Sunday.Kenneth Meek, organist of the Church of St.Andrew and St.Paul, will be the guest organ soloist and Mrs.Armonde Davis, contralto soloist at Dominion Douglas United Church, will sing the contralto solo in the “Cornelius Christmas Song”.This is a very beautiful work in which the soloist tells the story of the visit of the Wise Men to Bethlehem while the chorus * | Christian Science x * “MAN” is the subject of the Lesson - She tells us she did the whole thing for something less than $20 — but hastily adds that she's a combination housewife, seamstress, paperhanger and electrician. In addition, we might say, she seems to be very much of an interior decorator. For her color scheme she has chosen pink, blue and silver. This just sort of happened along, she says, when she found some wallpaper with a pale pink background and a large silver bow pattern. This she has used on the walls of her room. The ceiling she did in a harmonious shade of pale blue in à plain paper. Her dressing table consists simply of two orange crates, a piece of fibreboard across the top and a pleated skirt in chintz with pale pink background, and a large pale blue flower pattern. In place of the usual glass top, she has used, to cover the fibreboard, a piece of transparent white plastic lined with a plain pink fabric to blend with the pink background in the skirt, The stool ig a small barrel which she found in the cellar. The top of this sne has covered again with the white plastic,,lined with the pale pink fabric. The stool’s pleated skirt matches the skirt of the dressing table. To light the room she has three little wallbrakets along the straight wall above the dressing table. In addition, two small lamps, (which she made out of fancy honey-jars, of all things!) are topped by pink shades and stand on the dressing table to give her powder room plenty of illumination.Across the back of the room there's a space of a foot and a half of straight wall before the slant takes over.Into this she has built (she's a carpenter too, apparently) a shelf for cleansing tissues, cleansing cream, and other oddments her guests might need while they primp. All in all we'd say that a little ingenuity and a little energy has made that architectural mystery under the stairs into a Good Thing.LUCKY DOLL Marlene Dietrich’s lucky rag doll appears in several scenes in Paramount's “A Foreign Affair.” She has had it in every picture In case you've been wondering why the architect put that dismal closet at the back of your hall under the stairs — a lady in Winnipeg has found that it wasn't meant for the storage of odd rubbers and + 0} IODE Luncheon For Anniversary On the occasion of the 11th ane niversary of the Canon Allan P, Shatford Chapter, I.O.D.E., a luncheon was given to the members at the Queen's Hotel, on February 27th.This was followed by a ler, the Regent, at which time à had a most enjoyable time.Jean Arthur, one of the stars of learned how to be a top romantic Spring Hat Car Show ef he Exquisite headliners that transplant the fresh, delicate colors of Spring into your "end of winter’ wardrobe.New sailors and "upsweep" styles.Featuring the new Mallory Felts.Moderately Priced MISS M.BYRNE MI LLINER 4170 St.Catherine W., Fi.2848 (Near Gieene Ave.) bridge at the home of Mrs.A.Mil.presentation was made.Everyone Paramount's “A Foreign Affair,” comedienne the hard way.She ’ started her film career in “west erns” and “custard-pie” comedies.| FARRELL'S CATERING SERVICE WEDDINGS, BANQUETS RECEPTIONS AND PARTIES 211 GORDON AVE.YOrk 0254 with her since “The Blue Angel.” ; Residence - TR.2342 L.In Your Hair Tones Neutral-toned hair is generally made up of several shades, including gold and red, and it is most attractive when it sparkles in the light and shows unexpected glints of color. So keep it glistening clean.Chose the shampoo that gives it the most brilliant gloss.and wash it at least once a week, to unveil every e%ining strand.Brush it thoroughly every day, to carry oil from the roots to the dry ends, and to rid it of dust that makes it look more drab.It it is dry, a slight veil of brilliantine, well brushed on, gives it sheen.Avoid a too-tight, overprocessed permanent. It will make the hair 981 ST.JAMES STREET WEST dull.{One block east of Windsor St.) 4188 St.Catherine W., near Creene To The Qualified Watchmaker from ELGIN Fine Assortment of Rings, Watches, Wedding Gifts, etc.ALEXANDER WE.2102.+.Antiques Mellow treasures of another day to add rich distinction to any room in your home, and various choice collectors’ items for sale.Antiques Bought And Sold LIPSON & SON REG'D.Tel: MArbour 5000 Shirley Lu ‘man, Ice Star, Popular On and Off Skates By BETTY BRUCE *' Seventeen-year-old Shirley Lurrman, who was the star of the Montreal Figure Skating Club Carnival last year and who is leaving town shortly to compete in the Dominion Figure Skating Championships at Calgary on March 26th, is a natural born skater in the opinion of her coach, Ken Willock, of the Montreal Figure Skating Club. But no one suspected that Shirley had a flair for skating, till she was ten years of age, when her parents took her to see Sonia Henie at the Forum. That lit the spark! But it took a couple of years to bring out the fact that Shirley not only liked skating, but ‘has what it takes” to be a star performer on the ice. When she was five Shirley learned ballet dancing. Then she took up skiing with fervor. When she became enthusiastic about skc ting, her parents figured that the glamor of the ice show was largely responsible, and it was not until her mother, returning from a shopping expedition one afternoon, discovered her daughter at the pond near her home at 689 Moffat Avenue, executing spirals and spins in a pair of boy's tube skates, that she decided the child should be taken more seriously. So she and Shirley’'s Dad went shopping for a pair of figure skates to fit their* daughter, and popped them into her Christmas stocking, never dreaming that Shirley would one day be the focus of thousands of admiring eyes as she skims on shining vlades, Skated fer Barbara Ann Ice shows In which Shirley has akated include the Depression League Carnival, when Barhara Ann Scott made @ personal appearance at: the Verdun Auditorium. One of Shirley's happiest memories is of performing at that event, under the eyes of Canada's Ice Queen, and of chatting with her afterwards.Shirley has also appeared in ice shows held by the Apostolic Guild, the Catholic High School, Verdun Sports Association and many other gmaller carnivals, Tests and Medals After she recelved her Christmas gift of skates, she attended the Montreal Figure Skating Club for two years "just for exercise” according’ to her mother. Then she decame a pupil of Ken Willock, and in 1942 passed the bronze test; in 1943, the second test; 1944, third test; 1945, forth test; 1046 fifth and sixth tests, and on January 20, 1948, the seventh test.In 1942-43 she held the Wilson Trophy; in 1942 received the bronze medal; 1943, the dance bronze and the first bar to the bronze; in 1944 the second fo the bronze medal; 1945, Silver Medal; 1946, first aud second tha bronze; in 1944 the second bars to silver medal and in 1948, the third bar to silver, Her burning ambition now, of course, is to capture the gold medal and to pass her eigth test at Calgary this month, and eventually to be a professional skating instructor.Early to Bed, Early to Rise ! the comfort of silence found in shopping, no crowds to disturb one's attention; and the attractive way the goods are displayed, complementing articles being placed next to one another. This latter feature is a point that the girls at The C.S.L.Gift Shop are very prrticular about, with the result that one never sees a clashing of colors. The last but definitely nnt the least attractive feature of THIS specialty shop is the saleslady at your service. She is of a superior type that is not found in all stores, and has been specially trained to look atter the discriminating buyer. They do not rush you, or mind if you are interested only in browsing around. Those of you who have visited * Shopping A-Round The “New Look” seems to be everywhere these days, even at Frank Round & Son, floor covering shop at 5336 Sherbrooke St.West, near Decarie Blvd.N.D.G.Due to the increased popularity of this modern shop, more space was needed to display the larger selection of merchandise now coming in and accordingly Frank Round & Son have just completed extensive alterations. Those who have always wanted to own Oriental rugs but find the price more than their budget allows, should see the large assortment of domestic Sarouks or Sar-U-Khan rugs now being shown at-this store, for with their beautiful Oriental designs and rich colorings they are the next best to oriental rugs that are to be had.You will find all standard sizes. There are also English Wiltons in soft muted shades, and beautiful pastel shades in 27” Wilton carpet which can be used as runners, made up into rugs, or fitted wall to wall in the modern manner. Here you will find “Kandahars” and “Hardistans” both well known names in the Domestic rug market.Have you been waiting for the new Linoleums? If so you will find a wide range of colors here of both “Canadian and American manufacture in designs suitable for every room. For prompt and efficient service on installation of carpet, linoleum and tiles, see FRANK ROUND & SON, 5336 SHERBROOKE ST.WEST, DExter 4529 - DExter 0751.The C.S.L.Gift Shop will agree with what I * + * have said, and those of you who may have YOU CAN MAKE WATER COLORS FOR thought that this shop was beyond their means, YOUR CHILDREN by using beet juice ° need have no fears for “THE SHOP” has prices for red, bluing for blue.Mix red and for every purse. At the present time there are blue to make purple; slowly drifting back to Canada, bringing with them tales of poor administration and petty politics which marred the 1948 Winter Olympic Games. It seems that some nefarious intruder sabotaged the American two-man bobsleds, so armed guards were set to protect the Yanks' equipment during the remaining days of the Games.A couple of days before the Games commenced a spokesman for the British announced that his team was using a new, iron-rimmed ski, which no other team had.One of these skis was promptly stolen. And then, to top all these unfortunate events off, someone stole the Olympic flag from its mast.Included among the misfortunes at St.Moritz were such prejudices as caused the hockey refereeing to be almost entirely pro-European, directed particularly against Canada, as well as the judging in many of the other events, principally the 500 metre speed skating event. However none of our returning athletes have made such grave charges as did Ken Bartholomew, an American speed skater, who arrived home at Minneapolis last week.In an interview with Bill Carlson, a Minneapolis sports writer, Bartholomew was quoted as saying: “The United States will never have a chance in the Olympie Games until the Games come back to America The Games in Switzerland were strictly a matter of politics, and there were hard feelings everywhere.” HOCKEY MUDDLE LAID TO BRUNDAGE The young American prize-winner went on te blame Avery Brunmtlage for the entire hockey muddle, Explained the young American: .“The reason for the American Hockey Assoclation’s position in the Olympics was plainly political, and Avery Brundage was actually the stubborn and unrelenting force behind the Olympic hockey muddle.” Bartholomew went on to say that it was apparent to all Olympic athletes that, except for Brundage, the Winter Games might have run smoothly.% + « Ken himself is" a good example of the Olympic politics. After his run over the 500 metre course, he was told that his time varied from 42.7 to 42.9 seconds for distance, And yet, when the four judges announced his time in the final standings it was at 43.2, just one tenth of a second behind the winning Norwegian, So Ken could get only a sccond place finish.Just incidentally, two of the timers were Swiss, and the other two Norwegian. The Americans were given no place as official timers.* * = So now, after the most disastrous winter Games, from a goodwill point of view, since the Olympiad was revived in 1896, we can look forward to the Summer Games, to be held in England, But even these games seem destined to raise more bad feelings among the people of the world. Many Englishmen do not wish the Summer Games to be held in London, what with the British food and housing shortage.Today, the English are hardly able to care for their own, let alone 6,000 athletes from 53 foreign countries, among them 415 from the United States.Britain can provide only 2700 calories a day on her current rationing plan, and most of the 6,000 contestants require at least 4000 calories per day, while the heavier athletes, including weight h’ters, rowers, etc., can’t get by with less than 5000.It is reported that a plan has been sponsored in the States by which 300 tons -.£ basic foods will be sent to Britain to provide for the American Olympic representatives. This move will certainly not add to the Americans’ popularity in the British Isles, REPETITION OF 1936 BAD WILL FEARED Right now, the United States is the only country economically able to provide a proper venue for the Olympic Games, and to hold the Games at London will only add to the friction between countries. In fact, with the desperate European food situation, these Olympics may turn out to be even more of a farce than were the last Olympics, the 1986 Games, held At Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany, when Hitler's strong-arms, the S.S.Elite Guard, got more exercise than the contestants as they had a great time pushing both athlees and spectators from foreign countries around. But the sourest note of the entire affair came when athletes from over 50 countries had to stand in a cold drizzling rain while the Fuefrer took his time about arriving at the Olympic Stadium. In fact, the situation was so bad that Columnist Westbrook Pegler, covering the events for the New York World-Telegram referred to the town as “an armed camp”.* * * When the Olympic Games were brought back in 1888, it was for the purpose of promoting good-will and triendship between the nations of the world, They have had the opposite effect so far, with poor administration and petty politics arousing suspicion and hatred in all but one Olympics. That was the 1932 Games, held in the United States, the Winter Games at Lake Placid and the Summer events out on the Pacific Coast near Los Angeles. The Olympic Games have survived three wars.Maybe Ken Bartholomew's idea to hold the Games in the United States wasn't such a bad one after all.Certainly London is in no shape to treat the Olympic contenders as she did in 1908, the last year the Olypiad was held im.the British capital, BHO Ry WIRE VU OS HAN CENTS .4 Léa 1 Se this Saturday morning at Lachine Arena when they engage West Hill in quest for their ninth straight victory.A win or even a draw, will mean that they can not be overhauled for first place but it would be well not to take anything for granted as West Hill have a better than average club.Verdun High threw a scare into the local Westmounters last Saturday and the boys had to go all out before subduing the Verdun- ites 4 to 2.The Juniors continue to show improvement and Jast Saturday scored a smart 5 to 1 win over Lower Canada College outfit.Playing stellar roles in their team’s victory were Graham a- gan, Ray Lositd and Ross Murray.Claude Sawyer in goals also played a steady game. The Bantams bowed out of the Q.AH.A.play- downs when they lost a 4 to 2 decision to the Town of Mount seemed to suffer from stage fright and were three goals down before they got organized and in the last period almost pulled the game out of the fire as they completely outclassed their opponents but over anxiety around the nets spoiled their chances of getting any closer.SPORT SHORTS Mickey Bourassa who led the football team in scoring last Au- repeat the same accomplishment in hockey, Coach Andy McGillis has found out getting a team out in front in a league race is one thing but to keep it there presents a far more serious problem. It is a well known fact that most coaches don't relish the idea of driving a team in front all the way through the schédule as is the case of this year's tricky Senior B schedule where one loss can be fatal. The old saying you can't win them all doesn't apply to the Senior B race, where it is a case of you must win them all if you're championship bound.St.Leo's is proud and happy to salute four former Academy ring gladiators who, last week - end, reached the heights of Intercollegiate fistic fame while carrying the colors of old McGill to victory over their worthy opponents from Toronto Varsity, Queens University and London O.A.C.Congratulations are
