figures issued by the Dominion Fire Commissioner in Ottawa.A further breakdown puts the per capita fire loss for 1946 at $3.71 .Total fire loss for 1945 was $50,800.Property loss for the whole Dominion amounted to nearly $50,000,000 with 166 men, .78 women and 164 children dead as a result of fires in 1946.Smokers’ carelessness accounted for the largest percentage of fires, with defective stoves and furnaces, electric wiring and appliances, and over heated flues and chimneys following next in line.Sparks falling on flammable roofs caused the loss of roughly 1500 homes, approximately three a day.Lightning, spontaneous ignition and incendiarism increased the total by another 1600.Smoking in bed, fire authorities claim, kills more people and causes more property loss than any other single factor.Roof fires are the chief cause of conflagrations afid the greatest hazard to life because in many cases the occupants don't know the house is on fire until it is too late. This danger would be substantially reduced if home-owners would surface their roofä with fire-tèsistive asphalt shingles or some other fire-restive material.Canada’s fire loss for 1946, reports the Dominion Fire Commissioner, shows an increase of 11.7 percent over the previous year.Overcrowding is one good reason for this increase, but carelessness is still the prime fire-bug in any community and citizens everywhere are asked to make an extra effort this Fall to eliminate fire hazards in the home and help to save their property, and the lives and property of others.xaminer Insurance Company, Shawinigan Chemicals Ltd, British Rubber Company of Canada Ltd., G.D.Peters & Company of Canada Ltd., J.H.Connor and Son Ltd, Lewis Bros.Limited, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works Ltd., declared over, now that the Floral clock at Sherbrooke and Lansdowne avenue has been dehanded and deplanted until next spring.: 7 Rotarians Âre Told How Promotion Helps Sport Guest speaker at the regular weekly duncheon of the Rotary Glub of Westmount this week was Doug.O'Toole, General Manager of the Herald Press Ltd.Rotarian Dunc.Shanahan introduced the speaker, saying that he had brought to the printing trade the wide and varied experience of "| a career in the allied fields of advertising, public relations and merchandising. Moreover, during the late war, he had aided the Government in the direction -of Victory Loans and War Savings campaigns. He also is a noted sports fan.The speaker opend his address, with a few remarks on the present state of the Montreal Football Club, in which he takes a great ir.terest.‘ The reason for the record of the Alouettes up to the present, this season, is a mystery, he said, since there is no question about the superiority of this year's team over that of last year. However, having lost four games in a row, with a total deficiency of 16 points, the pressing task now is to take every game from here on.No alibi is offered for the Club’s past performance, except that strange things happen in sports. The Alouettes have outkicked, out passed and out-touched every team in the league—it has also outfumbled every team in the league.Turning to the business world, Mr.O'Toole said that in his opin- ionion there is no greater waste in business than the money spent improperly on inadequate sales promotion work.Sales promotion setups cannot be compared in effectiveness with those of the days before the late war, he said, due to the disruption of practically all sales promotion organizations during the war.The result is that skill and experience, essential to success, which had been built up over a period of years before the war are now much reduced.Busines” organizations today need the ben&- fit of sales training programs based on practical and technical experience, in order to function with efficiency.” This involves training right down the line.Public relations, as a separate entity, has the job of impressing the public with the prestige of the product, good will, etc, in any media, to promote its acceptance. The same principles applied to Montreal sports have proven spectacularly successful.| St.Andrew's Church and drew a large audience to hear some fine work.Starting rather nervously with the big Prelude and Fugue in C minor J.8.Bach, the recitalist soon sized up the instrument and proceeded vigorously ghrough ‘an exacting programme.Following Bach, Mr.Norman charmed his audience with two airy compositions by Corelli, a prelude and Sarabande, then to the French school, viz.Alexandre Guilmant's Marche Funebré et Chant Sera- phique. This mighty composition was superbly played, showing the full powers of the organ, evoking many compliments to all three component agencies, the music, the instrument and the drganist. Then followed three interesting compositions by the English musician Percy Whitlock, “Lantana,” “Chanty”, and “Salix”.To close his recital Mr.Norman essayed the big unwieldy Prelude and Fugue on the name of B.A.C.H.by Franz Liszt. One wishes that Liszt had not strayed from his piano, and confined his attention to, if he had to compose, work for the instrument he knew best. This Bach number is a monstrous work, mostly noise and fireworks, showing the performer has much agility in his fingers and feet.Mr.Norman could have found a much better medium to exhibit his technical, and extraordinary command of the instrument, J.S.Bach's Toccata in F, as an instance. The final recital of the series will be heard on Sunday at 8.45, when the recitalist will be George Little, B.Mus., organist of the First Presbyterian Church.Roslyn News By Dick Dunbar and Peter Safford Grade Five, Room 18, report that observers here with the recent report of a well known writer who interviewed our Prime Minister. The experience of the last few years has shown that the fundamental principles outlined by the Prime Minister are essential for the prosperity and welfare, not only of our industrial workers, but of all our people. The first of these principles which Mr.King has always stressed is that the needs of the whole community must always be ranked above those of labour, management or capital. The next principle is one that should be carefully remembered today when so many political ideologies in the world want to “force” their own peculiar ideas on the community. It is that there are only two ways to settle any dispute, industrial or international: by force or by persuasion (consent). This can only be done by men whose attitude is right, by men who honestly and sincerely want to reach a settlement.Certainly it can pever be by a management that thinks it should rule by ‘divine right” or by labour leaders who foment discord for the advancement of their own political party or fortunes. As Mr.King wrote in “Industry and Humanity”: “Industry's basis function is to be the servant of humanity; so should nationality; never vice versa”.QUEBEC'S FIRE BILL INCREASING Quebec's fire bill for 1946 was 53% higher than it was five years ago; the number of fires increased by 2% over 1942, and 22% of the losses in the province in 1946 were uninsured according to figures released by the Canadian Underwriters’ Association today for the purpose of calling.attention to the importance of Fire Prevention Week.“Last year,” the release said, “there were 22,121 fires in the province causing a loss of $17,247,675 as compared with 21,686 fires, with losses totalling $11,270,763 in 1942.“Quebec’s total for the year represented approximately 349% of the Dominion fire loss total for 1946 amounting to $49,413,363 of which 25% was uninsured.During the year, 166 men, 78 women and 164 children were killed by fire in Canada.“In five years our national bill for fire 194 53 er BE 00e VTE ness Ye , - see Tae THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1947 49 millions of dollars, or by approximately 55%.Last year alone, there were 41,005 fires in residential properties representing nearly 80% of all fites which indicates a national spirit of carelessness or apathy towards the wastage of resources by fire, and this at a time of a national shortage of homes.: “Such a situation cannot improve until every Canadian realizes the seriousness of this wastage and observes more care in regard to fire hazards.Co “Associations such as this are doing their utmost to convince the public of the importance of fire prevention.Apart from the destruction of lives and property, fire losses are directly associated with the rates charged for insurance. It .is, therefore, in the interest of the public, both from a practical standpoint of saving property as well as from the financial angle of keeping rates down to take more interest in the prevention of fire.” - | CANADIAN EXPORTS STILL ON INCREASE Canadian exports to the United States for the seven months ending last July were valued at $564,113,000, which is $92,912,000 higher than for the corresponding period last year.Shipments to the United Kingdom valued at $422,083,000, were also higher than the same period last year by $115,596,- 000.The increase in Canadian exports to all countries in the British Commonwealth and Empire amounts to $238,975,000 for the period under review.Particular interest is aroused by the continued improvement in trade relations with South Africa, as the Hon.James À.Mac- Kinnon, Minister of Trade and Commerce, is heading a mission to that country in an effort to stimulate interest in Canadian products, and to explain the desire of this coun- try to purchase additional commodities from the Union.Exports for the first seven months of this year had a value of $45,- 153,000, which is $12,552,000 higher than for the corresponding period of 1946, and $35,- 219.000 greater than in the same period of Other countries in the British Commonwealth and Empire to which Canada has shipped a larger value of merchandise during the present year than in 1946 are: Eire, Newfoundland, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Bahamas, the Leeward and Windward Islands, British Guiana, Souther Rhodesia, the Malayan Union ahd Singapore, Palestine, Australia and New Zealand. On the other hand, there has been a material decrease in exports to India.Foreign countries to which Canada has shipped this year a materially larger value of goods are: Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, China and Syria. There has been a marked decline, however, in exports to Belgium, Greece, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and French Africa.CANADA’S HUGE DENTAL BILL As a bit of information that can be tucked away and forgotten until after your next visit to the dentist is an.item brought out in a recent survey made under the Combines Investigation Act.It showed that Canadians pay better than $43,000,000 each year for the preservation of their teeth. This is for the surgical care of their teeth and has nothing to do with what they pay for dentifrices, took washes and tooth brushes, that would come to almost an equal amount. We pay the dentist for his services $38,000,000, and for the stuff he sticks in our teeth another $5,000,000.It works out at something more than $21 per year that the average Canadian family pays for dental services.SECOND LOOK “I got off a street car this morning,” said a doctor, “and being in Relations, of the fale University School of Medicine. The author stated that Dr.Yerkes after a lifetime comparing thé behavior of monkeys and people now understands the chimps, but he is still puzzled by the people.Dr.Yerkes puts the gunliia ahead of the chimp in total psychological resemblances to humans, despite the fact that the ii- telligence tests put the chimp at the head of its class.une al- mirer of the professor suggests it all depends on which human is ‘used as the basis of comparison.Yerkes, for instance, has more in common—emotionally, that is— with the gorilla, a interested to learn that the clerks in this department have a very definite knowledge of the color and style which will bring out the high lights in a garment.Matching hand bags are also being sold in the Salon.I looked at a very chic sling pump which had a draped bow, made of genuine cobra in grey, oxblood or pine green, also a walking shoe in brown with extention sole, closed toe, high Cuban heel
