THEATRE PLAN Rotary Club And Business Men Seek Citizens Support Merchants and-.residents of the eastern section voted themselves in a solid body behind any plan designed to provide facilities, create healthy business conditions, and - banish the air of stagnation which appears®to be settling over the area, at a general meeting held in the Victoria Hall under the auspices of the Business Men’s Association of West- mount.; Because of certain suggestions made to the Council by the Rotary Club and Business Men's Committees which have studied the problem, certain amendments to existing by-laws in Westmount are being seriously considered and it Was the expressed hope of the meeting that the Council would go further and amend certain existing by-laws which place local merchants at'a disadvantage when competing with merchants in nearby Montreal.Eric Ohman opened the meeting and introduced Donald Ross, Président of the Westmount Busi- mess Men's Association, who gave & detailed account of the-activi- tiles and results secured from committees convened by both tho Rotary Club of.Westmount and the Business Men's Association which had conducted an extensive survey of the eastern business and residential section of the municipality and presented their findings to the City Council with suggestions for improvements, one of which proposed erection of a theatre in the Eastern Section ot estmount. The understanding attitude exhibited by Council mem- hers towards the suggestion of the committees was the subject of favourable comment on the part Of the speaker, who assured his listeners that the Mayor and his council were deeply concerned and would welcome all assisiance | which would tend towards a solution of the’problem.Commenting on the contribution which can be made by the merchants themselves, Mr.Ross paid high praise to -G.A.Couture, proprietor of the Canadian Art and Handicraft, 4250 St.Catherine St., who by dint of effort has succeeded in displaying his goods in so attractive a manner against such a well lighted background as to attract the attention of pedestrians at all hours and urged that others follow the example set and profit thereby. He then introduced Mr, A.W.Callard, President of the West- mount Rotary Club.Speaking for.the Chairman of the Community Service Committee of the Rotary Club of West- mount who was.unable to be present, Mr.Callard reported that ‘the findings of the Rotary Com.‘mittee supported those of the Business Men’s Committee and assured those present that the idea of building e theatre in Eastern Westmount as the first step in a.campaign of progress, met with the hearty approval and support of the Westmount Rotary Club.Mr.Lester was then introduced and quietly he related how he owned land in the Eastern section of the municipality on which he would erect a modern air conditioned fireproof’ theatre, equipped with every modern convenience baving seating capacity for eight hundred people as soon as permission was granted by civic authorities. The speaker added that it was hls own belief that a building permit for the erection of such a project would be issued (Continued on Page Canada ‘The government of Canada should be run just as efficlently as the City of Westmount, and Just as economically,” says Charles Wisdom, Independent candidate for Westmount-St.Antoine.Successive administrations take to themselves more and more tasks, which are nothing less than direct intrusions on the rights of the individual, and, under the guise of helping some section of society, or as a means of redistribution of wealth, take a dollar and a half for every dollar they return.Post-war expenditures of all governments (federal, provincial and municipal) in Canada actual- Iy planned and announced will approximate $2,800,00,0000, which compares with an estimated national Income of $8,500,000,000.Reduced to its simplest terms this means that everyone must work one day out of every three for the Government. The result ‘will be a lower standard, of living for all but the inefficient, who will be the greatest receivers of this government bounty, The Government is creating a system where the efficient labour for the inefficient and where the industrious labour for the indolent. There are two essential steps to be taken: Reduce instead of Increase the cost of government—Iit inevitably | "costs government at least twice as much through bureaucratic administration to receive and pay a dollar as it does for private enterprise to receive and pay the same dollar.(Continued on page.4) City Hall Briefs At a recent meeting of the City Council It was announced that parking on ‘both sides of Wood lavenue from St.Catherine Street to Western Avenue is limited to sixty minutes between the hours of 8 a.m.and 5 p.m.by virtue of by-law 501.The City Hall will be closed on the King's Birthday, June 14, while all other services will function as usual.Due to the Federal! election, Monday, June 11, the regular weekly City Council meeting will be held on Wednesday next. The office in the Greenhouse will be open Saturday afternoon until! 5 p.m.for the convenience of residents wishing to obtain tickets for the tennis courts.PLAYGROUND ADD SUMMER ATTRACTIONS An ambitious programme has heen lined up for the local playgrounds this summer by Superin- and Recreation Supervisor Jim McCormick. Many new facilities have been added to the playgrounds and some of them are lighted activities.Bruce Smaill, male supervisor, at the Staynor playground, has been on duty for a week now and a lady supervisor, Miss Avril Keiller, will start at the same playground , Monday afternoon.Lady playground supervisors will gtart part-time activities in Westmount and Prince .Albert parks on Monday, June 18, and they ‘will commence their full time duties in the last week of the month. An innovation this year wil] be the appointment of a male supervisor for Westmount Park for nights only.Clary Redding has taken over this position and will start his duties the last week of the month.Activities to be organized before the end of the month ine clude a juvenile softball league, two soccer leagues and a volleyball league. These will all be run on an inter-playground basis with probably two teams from Staynor and at least one from Westmount Park in each loop.Adults will not be neglected, in addition to new lighted facile ities being placed in Westmount Park which includes a nine hole putting course, two horseshoe pitches, shuffleboard, bowling and checkers it {s hoped to organize 8 cycling club to make week-end trips.Another plan is to stage tennis “nights” with a swim and dancing to end up freedoms is freedom from fear.It seems rather remarkable that certain publicists and propagandists represent the social and political views opposed to the C.C.F.—and that means all those who are backing the old-line parties-—are asking the.electors to determine the way they shall cast their vote on the grounds of fear.It has been shown by reliable authorities that Hitler was backed by the big German industrialists, financiers and landowners and generals. It has been revealed by investigations in the U.S.A.and in Great Britain how complete has been the tie-up between the lieads | a it stremgth- ens it.From us he is determined to obtain support for the Chinese.Communists, whose loyalty to the “Communist fatherland,” the “centre of the world revolution,” has been repeatedly stated by Mao Tse-tung and other leaders. When we finally arm and ‘‘recognise” the Chinese Communists Stalin's ascendancy in interior China is assured. But there will still be vast areas in the hands of the Japanese gnd thelr Chinese. Will Russia Fight Japan?Stalin stepped in with a declara= ing a serious war with Japan, But the day may come for action such as that in Bulgaria last year, and he has now cleared .the decks for that.Later Premier Stalin.stepped in wtih a declaration of war.The puissant Red army invade ed Bulgaria, with little or no opposition from the distracted country.Moscow established its complete ascendancy with a suite ably ‘recognized’ Bulgarian government. The peace terms were not ours, but Moscow's.If and when Japan, after many years of ever expanding warfare and destruction, is beaten down to the point where a new goveru- ment desperately sues for peace on almost any terms, Stalin will find it easy to move.It will he a war with little risk.To invade Manchuria and Korea, distracted and paralyzed as they are, would be comparatively easy.Moscow will again be—as in the case of Bulgaria — our “punctual” ally, And the peace terms will not be ours, but Moscow's.By peace terms not excluding our domination of Japan, Moscow would strengthen friendly relations with Japan and also shut os ou* from | a too powerful positira in the Far East.wishes to maintain Japan as a buffer against us.He will certainly not assist us to a position where we might again use Japan against Muscovy. The historical record and the logic of the present situation are such that we must again raise the question of our war aims and our peace aims in the Far East.We are not going to occupy and dominate Japan proper, not only because of the terrific cost, but also because the Soviet Union would flatly oppose it and work against it.We shall probably restore the British to power in Burma, Malaya, Singapore, Hongkong and lesser areas, and pere haps give them Thailand as well.We shall probably restore the Dutch dynasty over its 75,000,000 Indonesian subjects — with more success than our ill fated attempt in 1919 to re-establish the Ro- manovs over the 150,000,000 Russian subjects. We may reestablish the French, under our patronage, in Indo-China.®* We shall probably leave China to Stalin in the new partitioning of eastern Asia.Would these things’ lay the foundation for “enduring peace’?If so, let us have the evidence.+ Stalin undoubtedly “¥ Tr XS ‘WO À 5 Re pan use no ady Ja- The ur- the the nce the act ape not th- 1ed ese.to the n,”?rs, of sts ior ill ds sera in, on ast he er de Pe ts ite Ve re Toa" miAoo Son Sod HR FRO Se TE 0 eo FF RNA YN ee, wT A TAM.| N > Guides, Scouts, etc, will at- 0.tend.; Bloch - Publishing Company, New York,- Canadian Edition printed by Woodward Press, Inc, Montreal.Price, $2.00.The author, a popular member of the Montreal Bar Association; a native of Montreal, now in middle life, was for some years a partner of the late Peter Berco- viteh, K.C., who is remembered as an eminent lawyer and as a legislator with distinguished careers in our Quebec Legislature and our House of Commons, The groundworl® was prepared in a hospital, while Mr.Cohen was awaiting the results of tests preliminary to a major operation, He was seized with a desire to write something “about the deplorable condition of the Jewish people, whose plight was so manifest to the world at large, which nevertheless seemed to care little what was happening to them.” “What is the reason for all this hatred?” I asked myself, “I read voraciously; 1 digested learned works on anti-Semitism.I studied Jewish history as well as Christian historical writings; and to my astonishment discovertd ‘that the keenest intellects of every century and age since the birth of Jesus had actually not been anti- Semitic at all, but admirers of the Jews, and ready to admit their many good qualities.” “Why then does anti-Semitism flourish?I continued to ask.” In this fascinating little volume he strives to give an answer. He hopes “it will cause honest individuals everywhere to give the subject of anti-Semitism a little more thought—and the Jews more consideration.” He closes his preface as follows: “What is important at this moment is not polish, but candor in writing about a situation in whieh it matters vitally and tremendously what is done—not in the months and years to come—- but in the days and wee.s that lie immediately ahead.I do not mind if I have made enemies, or even mistakes, provided I have helped to arouse thoughts about a subject concerning which the world can stand a little stimulation.” He should not make enemies by bravely writing this volume through every line of which shines his passionate love of his religion and his people. While some persons of other races and religions may not be able to agree with all of his conclusions no one should have anything but deep admiration for the author of this * brilliant little volume which he with great modesty says ‘should be judged as an enlarged pamphlet rather than as a book’ because as a matter of fact, it 1s a well written, well printed and attractively bound volume. Some of the XXII chapters are: Democracy and the Jews; Property and Poverty Among the Israelites; How the Jews were Governed in Biblical Times; Pre- Czarist Persecution; The Dreyfus Case; Origins of German Anti- Semitism; Disabilities of the Jews in America; Distinctive Features of Judaism and Christianity; The Crucifixion and the Interpolations of the Gospels; Remedies if Any; A New Slant on Race Hatred; and What the Future Holds. An archway in George Tweed, a Navy man of 16 years’ standing, was on duty as Radioman, First Class, at t he Navy Communications Office in the Capital city of Agana. He, for one decided that he would not surrender and headed for the bush.A few other Americans did the same thing; but, as far as is known at present, Tweed is the only one who survived. The story of the experiences of this resourceful and unbreakable Navy man from Portland, Oregon, has been told, lar(ely in Tweed's own words, by Blake Clark, who has been a newspaperman in the Pacific area and a teacher at the University of Hawaii. The account is called “Robinson Crusce, USN,” perhaps not with the utmost appropriateness; for Tweed, unlike Defoe's hero, was on an Island cially by enemies, rather than deserted, and food and shelter were in large measure provided for him by friendly natives, called Chamorros.O the other hand, Tweed surpassed his prototype in mechanical ingenuity; for, without Crusoe’s salvaged treasure of tools and lumber, he not only built furniture, but constructed Au alarm system and put in temporary working order a broken- down radio and made a decrepit typewriter produce @ one-page newspaper that helped to keep up island morale, The story itself is so amazing, so full of hairbreadth escapes circumstantially related that, though quietly, bluntly told without heroics, it can stand on its own merits. At first, he and the other Amer- fcans who had taken to the bush expected that the island would be quickly recaptured; but, .as tells of othêr ingenious ideas she| anese succopses eanig over his a erepit radio, Tweed stopped setting imaginary rescue ‘dates. It depressed ‘him too much when the date came and ‘went with no welcome sound of American planes. The Japanese combed the island tor the fugitives, section by section, foot by foot. When the other white men had been found and executed, Tweed, with a price on his head, was systematically hunted by a 50-man, patrol.Harsh punishment was inflicted on many natives on the bare suspicion that they had aided him. They were loyal, but they ‘gossiped_ among themselves, and it was not until he fell In with Antonio Artero that he found a friend who did not talk.He remained in the rocky mountain crevasse where Arturo took him for 21 months, until, in June, 1944, he heard the sweetest music in the world—the roar of’ American bombers. The story of George Tweed is an unembellished report of native loyalty held at great cost, and of extraordinary endurance displayed by a woods - trained, Navy - bred: American who would not let go, and even made his months of hiding a means of mental improvement. Two new members have.been elected to the Board of Management of the Y.M.C.A.Presence of of London, England, to holders of the London Bridge Water Works annuities. The checks honor a pledge made to Peter Morice in 1583, The story of the annuity was brought to light here by Ernest H.Russell, Duchess avenue, in a clipping from -the London Daily Express. It was in Queen Elizabeth's time that Peter Morice, water engineer, believed of Dutch descent, set up a water wheel between an arch of the.old London Bridge to give the city its first mechanical water supply.London rewarded him by prom- {sing to pay him and his heirs and executors £3,750 a year for no leas than 500 years.Considering the value of money then and now, Mr.Russell ‘comments, there was “nothing small or trifling” about the deal.Though the old water wheel was scrapped with the ofd London Bridge more than 150 years ago, London has never failed to meet its obligation to Peter Morite. Then—more ponderously — he added: “But as a public representative I denounce the bargain on all scores.” Peter Morice's direct descendants, though, do not now reap much benefit from his shrewd deal.“His right had passed split up into hundreds of small annuities long before we took over the New River Company,” said Mr.Berry.“Now there are 1,500 of these annuities, eah worth £2 10s.a year. The holders get them by purchase or by Inheritance, but I doubt whether a single direct descendant of Peter Morice is among them now.” Cost Is High To buy out Peter's rights by redeeming the 1,500 annuities would cost present-day London too much, thinks Mr.Berry.“To buy the rights just for the next 30 years would mean paying out more than £100,000 at once,” he said.Londoners may find some comfort in the thought that the Lord Mayor, aldermen and dignitaries of Peter's day rejoiced to observe waiter being thrown ‘‘as high as the steeple of St.Magnus's Church, which was a thing never before known in England.William Matthews described the occasion in “Hydraulia,” his history of London's waterworks, published in 1835.For such past pleasures London still pays.Shot Thrill Act At Belmont Park Shot out of a responsible for the success of ‘The Unseen,” a Paramount picture which opened last night at the York United Theatre. Not to slight others connected with this fine production, however, credit also goes to Lewis Allen, the director and Hagar Wilde and Raymond Chandler.“The Unseen” is a tense, drama- tie story laden with the kind of suspense conducive to goose pimples and such. There are not many moments for audience relaxation in this mystery film—the rapid pace of events doesn't allow for it.For comparison’'s sake, “The Unseen” might be said to have many of the same elements of “The Uninvited,” “Suspicion,” “Gaslight” and others of that type. The mystery portion of the story focuses on an empty house, next to tied up with the murderer, unbeknownst to them, however.Right down to the finish line, “The Unseen’ maintains a deathly suspense with the atmosphere being cleared in the end through the discovery of the murderer’s idbntity. The number of characters under suspicion, at least five, keeps the audience guessing and a bit of a surprise awaits amateur detectives. It wouldn't be fair to reveal the killer's name here, but the film is worth seeing if you like your screen fare spiced with a sense of the ominous, Touch and go from the very beginning, “The Unseen’ practically lifts audiences out of their seats in certain spots. The secret of the acting, writing and direction is the uncertainty of what is next going to happen.Usually, it's a surprise twist which makes the action so much more intriguing. It’s fair to say that even the actors themselves must have wondered who the murderer was during the filming of the picture.Anyway, everyone breathes more easily
