CONBUGTED FOR OLD RA Great Need For Discarded Materials Stressed By Local Salvage Campaign Officials The Westmount Salvage Campaign committee is this week making a special appeal for the same material being asked for in the corresponding period by headquarters \u2018of the National drive\u2014rags, and every effort is being made to collect as large a quantity as possible.Stressing the great need for rags at the present time, officials of the local campaign stated yesterday that during the year immediately prior to the start of the war, Canada's importation of waste rags included 30 mil- Hon pounds from the Netherlands, 16,300,000, from the United States, and 10,500,000 pounds from the United Kingdom.Canada\u2019s normal requirement of the material is 70,000,- 000 pounds annually and during the first year of the war but 50 million was obtained in this country, and all imports have now stopped.The city seeks, particularly, old clothes, rugs, carpets and mattresses and residents are requested to place all such discarded articles beside their garbage cans for collection on garbage removal day.Most of the rags collected will be used as wipers in war production plants, while woollen rags and other materials will be gent, to textile mills to be made into blankets, rugs.and.Greatcoats.) .In a previous drive for rags conducted by the National Salvage Committee, William Knightly, director of National Sal vage headquarters, asked Canadians to save their old rags for use in war industry.\u201cDon\u2019t throw away\u2018 or burn a single scrap of .cotton or wool,\u201d he said in a statement, explaining there wer many and varied uses for rags, the most essential of which was as wipers to keep parts of machinery clean.Rags collected at home should be sorted and when they have accumulated local salvage committees will see that the rags find their way to cleaning and reclamation plants and thence to war industry.\u201cWe want all the rag we can gat.said Mr.Knightley.Last High Pupil Is Officially Announced Sergeant Air Gunner Donald Justin Savage, a former student of Westmount HIgh School, lost his life in action on January 15, according to official word received by his parents, Mr.and Mrs, G.V.Savage, of 121 Quebec avenue, Toronto.It will be recalled that on December 18 last Sgt.Savage was a member of the crew of the R.C.A.F.bomber which scored a direct hit on one of the German warships Gnelseneau and Scharu- horst, undergoing repairs at Brest.At that time, he laughed as he told about a plece of flak which came through the tail.\u201cI wasn't hurt,\u201d he sald, \u2018\u2018because 1 wag sitting on my tin hat and nothing happened.\u2019 Sgt.Savage who was burfed in Yorkshire, England, with full military hovors was born at Bel- leville, Ont.and was 20 years of age.He received his education at St.Michael's High School at Belleville and later at Westmount High School.Prior to enlisting Sgt.Savage was employed as a clerk in the chief tImekeepers office of the Canadian National Railways, Montreal, where he commenced his railway service in July 1936, He obtained leave of absence from the national system in October 1939 to joir the R.C.AF, He received training at Toronto land Jarvis, Ont, prior to going overseas in May of last year.Bet.Savage's father is also employed with C.N.R.as transportation inspector at Toronto.FINAL TRIBUTE PAID TO
