the Psalms so often that it hecame known as the ‘neck verse.” In some grim instances, however, aded Dr.Ross, old crabbed writing records the pathetic fact that “he asked for the hook; he rould n°* v-ad; he was hanged.” ‘It seems incredible to us in nindern times,” said the speaker.“but any man who stole anything valued at 12 pence and over was liable to the death pen- (Continued on Page 8) #42 Years in [ir PO OLD GOLD and JEWELLERY Cee our stock of smart mew Watches 1216 Gresne Ave.looking - staves -~into which a hook could be titted, en-| RE La: » [Lord Mayor Of | London Sends Reply In reply to a St.George's Duy message of encouragement to the pcople of London, Mayor Walter A.Merrill, K.C, of Westmount, received the following night letter from Lord Mayor Wilkinson of London.“Mayor Walter A, Merrill, Westmount, Province of Qucbec. Please convey to your citizens my deep appreciation of their kindly message, Words cannot express our feelings of emotion and gratitude for your sympathy with us in these days of ruthless attack. We in this city are ever mindful of our ancient motto, ‘Domine Dirige Nos," and in this faith will stand firm and unshaken, WILKINSON, Lord Mayor of London.” 0000 SUCSESS 15 ENJOYED BY LOCAL CHURCH Westmount Baptist Hears + Encouraging Reports From All Departments At Annual Meeting Encouraging reports from all departments of the church were received at the annual meeting of the Westmount Baptist Church for the year just closed.Financial statements revealed that a total of $23,685 was raised, of which 87,668 was de- he Westmo unt ee .A xaminer Serving The City of Westmount, Garden Suburb of Canada’s Metropolis Although it has been in full bloom for approximately three wee'ts, the main Easter Display of flowers in the Westmount Park consarva- tory stiil presents an outstanding sight and is attracting hundreds of flower lovers each day and evening. The above picture was taken when the show opened at Easter and shows Alderman and Mrs.B.Panet.Raymond of Westmount, and their daughter, Aline, viewing the display with E.J.Anderson, (left), superintendent of the Westmount Parks Department.SERVICES HELD FOR THE LATE WIN voted-—t0-—missionärÿ ” Purpôrés The pastor, Rev.J.A, Johnston, who completed his eighth year of service, and the various boards and committees, reported a year of marked activity, A net increase in the membership of thirty was recorded and feeling tribute was paid to members who had passed away and to the many men of the congregation who are on active service.Recognition of the work of Mrs.Johnston, wife of the pastor was made in the presentation of a bouquet of roses on behalf of the women by Mrs.A.E.Wal- ford. The Red Cross and other women's organizations reported a successful period of service with more than 2500 articles made or contributed for patriotic or charitable purposes. The following officers were either elected or re-elected by acclamation: Harold Hamilton, church clerk; F.E.Dufty, treasurer: W.H.Gill, recorder of weekly offerings; C.B.Ritten- house, chairman of general committee; Miles Birkett and W.E.Cooper, auditors.Vacancies on the board of trustees were filled by election of John B: Frosst and P.Speer: and on the board of deacoas hy Miles Birkett, W.E.Elliot, H.W.Hamilton and Dr.Ewart Hinds.Elected to committees were: Deaconess: Mrs.Adam.Mrs.El- Hot, Mrs.Hamilton, Mrs.Naismith.Mrs, Saunders and Mrs.A.Walford: Music: R, N.Gibson, K.G.White, Mrs.Fry, Mrs.Spiers, Miss A.Watson; Missionary; George Adam, W.8S.Elliot, M.C.Stafford, T.F.Todd, Mrs.Hamilton, Mrs.Johnston, Mrs Simpson, Mrs.Walford, Mrs.Wal-| lace: House: F.Chalmers, E.B.Mills, E.E.Walls, Mrs.Blake-, ney, Mrs.Brooke.Miss McKer-' gow: Ushering: E.D.McCallum, P.Speer and K.G.White.| el Ll llr aids The Week At Victoria Hall a RO ee ized Thursday, May 1—Westmount Stamp Club.i Friday, May 2—Missa Sodality Dance; St.Leo's Junior Hockey T=am Dance; Montreal Figure Skating Club Presentation of Prizes; !
