SAVE! SAVE! Sometime within the next few days local residents will be asked to save your money and lend it to the government at a good rate of interest to help win the war.During the com- “hg year this country is to double its production of trained soldiers and supplies of all kinds in order to relieve the Motherland of a still greater share of the burden of the war.This effort is going to cost a lot of money, and the greater part of it has to come from the pockets of the wage-earners.Compared to pur contributions of the year gone by, our sav- Ings during the year just beginning must be tremendous.Much of this money is to be raised through the sale of war savings stamps, and every citizen is being asked to help in this way, No purchase is too small.Every puarter will help.We must contribute every tent that can be spared, and deny ourselves tus‘omary luxuries to swell the fund still further, Some of us might think this a hard- "ship; but it must not be forgotten that we are to get the money back, and we are to be paid R good rate of interest on it while it is in the Jovernment’s possession.Our patriotism is ill profitable, and so long as the subscriptions «received in ample volume it will remain af-wav.But the Empire is faced with the worst crisis in its history; indeed, our civiliza- derate, co-operative, tion is at the cross-roads, and we are most emphatically not going to lose it for want What isn’t given will be taken the government can’t borrow, it will have to And you don’t get taxes back, nor inter- CANADA'S PROBLEM PROVINCE Regardless of what our experience was during the first World War, this country’s problem child in this struggle is most emphatically Ontario.For years, it has been generally recognized that our system of national finance was far from efficient even for peace-time needs and an obvious and decided handicap in time of national emergency.With a view to correcting the deficiencies in the system, the government appointed a commission of noted Canadians to ‘take evidence in all parts of Canada and from all classes of our citizenry and from this mass of evidence recommend measures to bring the system into line with requirements of the day.The war greatly intensified the need for action along this line, and the conclusions and recommendations of the Sirois Commission seemed to provide means of streamlining our war effort.But the representatives of the Province of Ontario refused even to discuss it; and, to make matters much worse, a noted Toronto preacher used the report to stir religious and racial strife at what is probably the most critical time in our history.One cannot escape the conclusion, after reading the remarks of Messrs.Hepburn and Shields, that neither of them have even read the report about which they are making so much trouble.These men could not more effectively be doing the work of the enemy if they were fifth columnists in the enemy's pay.In striking contrast is the attitude of our own Province of Quebec—the mo- thoroughly Canadian stand taken by Premier Godbout at the conference.Our Premier, by this and other recent actions, has placed Quebec in the very forefront of the Empire's battle for civilization.REVIEW BY HOWARD S.ROSS ) er omar er rar The Examiner's Barr McCutcheon, “sherry.” “The City of Musks,” elc, author Mead & Company, This is a novel thrilling exploits on land.The liner “Doralne” from a South American bound for the United song on board and a cargo grain, foodstuffs, metals, micals, rubber, ete.— a mix cargo.women who had achieved 4a from all continents.trip on the “Doraine.” The crew was international.all the which goes with fit, WEST WIND DRIFT, by George “Black is White,” L.Burt Company, New York.By arrangement with Dodd, tilled with sea and sailed port States.There were seven hundred per- che- Her passenger list contained the names of men and tinction in finance, business, diplomacy, art and adventure, and She was never seen again except by those who sailed on her and in due time was entered in shipping records of the U.S.A.as “Lost with all on board.” The Captain was an old man and an Englishman — Weather- by Trigger and making his last An American was to succeed him.The author knows the sea and romance and tragedy The attractive and able hero wag A.week twelve passes are given to the the following requirements: — of Examiner in which the names of the A.the purpose.Residents of Westmount, only, a one submitting the right answers.’ be received in Monday's mail.° St.Antoiné Road; High Home | And School | Association Article By MRS.L.J.CUSHING On Wednesday evening, February oth, A study group of the Westmount High School Home and School Association met at the Intermediate School, The subject was “The French language as tzught in our schools.” Miss Truax, a speci list in French, of the high school gave us an intensely interesting talk, stressing the handicaps in our present system, The discussion following, however, resuite in no working plan to improve the situat.on.Many suggestions were rade, such as summer camps, clubs formed at schools for a period of one year.All these 1equired careful study and consideration,—a complete survey of their feasibility.Isn't there a great deal®we parents can do in fostering interest at home, by maxing our children French-conscious?In an English speaking communit: it is very dif- ficuit to make our children realize that a speaking knowledge of French is a necessity.We can help them by creating a French atmosphere i* the home.Why nct have some French books and newspapers on our reading table?Perhaps we can get some French “Funnies”.Why not ask, “What is on the programme of CKAC tonight?” how many children heard Cardinal Villeneuve last Sunday?The children would have then realized that their French Canadian neighbours have with them, a common interest.They too were praying for victory.I appreciate how thoroughly negligent I have been in merely criticizing lack of interest, instead of seriously doing something to help create it.In mv opinion, the relative importance of a speaking knowledge of French (by graduation time) is not realized by the administre ors of our English speaking schools in the province of Quebec.The main object of our -choo!s should be to [it our pupils to get on in life, and it would be of great assistance to them to be able to understand their French Canadian neighbours.With this end in view, a knowledge of French is much more important than some of the subjects taught.Proportionally more time should be given to the study of this language.In the Elementary Schools the question of funds arises, as general opinion agrees that specialists are needed.In the Intermediate and Senior Schools it is not money that is required but more time.During the course of the discussion, it was mentioned that authorities generally agree that, to acquire a speaking knowledge of French, 2,700 hours are necessary.Our children get less than 950 hours in school.I do not think anyone would deny the great improvement during the past few years in the teaching methods of the language, The text books ‘n use ten years ago cannot be compared with ST RIE aL : OWNED AND OPERATED BY L.F.HARDING 1215 Greene Avenue ROOM 10 + o .With that same easy-to- remember phone Fltzroy 4747 those of the present day.However, we must do more.We can't expect the teachers and board of education to do everything.Are we not, as citizens, responsible for our school board, teachers and schools?All parents are iuterest- ed i.their children.This is our common ground.Let us work together, and by ex- c.anging views, we shall be able to clarify thc situation and find a solution for this problem.BANK MENTIONS WAR SAVINGS STAMP DRIVE Senator Raoul Dandurand Makes Reference In Presidental Address Reference to tie war savings cortificate campaign all our financial resources to the winning of the War, “This is the subject on which! should like to pause, as the City and District, being a Savings Bank, its principa care is the afe guarding of its clients’ savings and the encouragement of thrift for the greater protection of themselves and ’h !- families.Today we are at war and the need for saving is all thc more urgent.“W-~ know that our 250,000 depositors are fully cognisant of the virtue of this principle.“The great majority of them, drawn from the professional and industrial classes, but of Finance appeals, in a particular manner, to purchase War Savings Certificates, which are loans to the State, at interest.Investment therein will result in helping the country to next the expenses of carrying on the War.The State is reqtiring great sacrifices of those -vhe can pay heavy taxes and asking them and others to subscribe substantially to the hond issues; but it appeals to the general Addresses Staff Conference Of Association Held in Central YM.C.A.“Human ‘’alues in the Work of the Y.W.C.A." was the subject of an interesting address given by Dr.Fred Howes at the staff conference of the Young Women's Christian Association held this week iu the central Y.M.C.A.Drummond Street.Dr.Howes dealt in illuminating manner with the conflict which confronts the individual from the time wheu experience reaches the level of consciousness and the child can uo longer rest in the security of parental care, and continue to live upon the plane of emotional reaction.This struggle, the speaker pointed out, is the source of the fears and anxieties that inhibit all human beings, and the method of solving it lies only in the synthesis of emotional sensitivity and conscious intellect which is effected when the individual loses his preoccupation with self in a more comprehensive purpose.Using a striking figure from the psychology of Kiinkel, thut each person must be the subject and object, Dr.Howes pointed out the necessity of willingness on the part of the individual to accept the consequences of his conduct, thus respecting the personalities of other people equally with himself though not more, Following the address the staff divided into two groups for dis- cussion led by Mrs.Margaret B.| Lathe and Marion Royce.At the luncheon table reports from the groups were made by Miss Hilda Briffett and Mrs, Pearl Kirk, Then in a brief closing address Dr.Catherine S.Vance, the General Secretary, skilfully summar- {zed and correlated the thinking of the discussion groups.The Conference was opened with a thoughtful worship service led by Mr.Murray Brooks in the chapel of the Y.M.C.A.and at luncheon Miss Strethel Walton introduced to the group the hymn books which lave recently been purchased by the Association, singing a few selections after comment upon the music as well as teaching them to the group.OLD BOYS OF LOWER CANADA HOLD ANNUAL R.de indicate how the flow of Military mails has risen to formidable proportions during the past year.and lend emphasis to the need for proper addressing and packing so that the most expeditious delivery may be effected.During the calendar year of 1940 some 140.000 pounds of letters (approximately 5.600,000 letters), 596,000 pounds of newsprint, and 3,260,000 pounds of parcels passed through the Base Post Office, Canada, addressed to our soldiers abroad — a total weight of 1,998 tons! The tlood of mail through the Base Post Office for overseas shows a continuous uptrend as figures for the last two weeks in January indicate.For the week the public's full co-operation in: 560 parcels: Increased Mail Volume Requires Co-operation ending January 18th, approximately 156, 440 letters and 24,- 539 parcels were despatched;
