eight French battleships against six Italian; seven heavy cruisers against 7; twelve light cruisers against fifteen Italian; sixty-three French destroyers against sixty-two; eighty French submarines against eighty-seven.The French exceed in speed and gun power. Two of the finest vessels afloat are the battleships Dunkerque and Strasbourg- completed tu 1937 and 1938 as an answer to the Nazi pocket battleships which they can outrun and outgun. They are 26,500 tons and mount eight 13-inch guns and 16 Their engines of 100,000 horse- x power give them a speed of 30 knots per lour, The new battleship, the Richel- feu, has just entered the service. The French destroyers approach 3000 tons and carry eight 5.6-inch guns. One recently attained a speed of 45 knots per hour—the highest speed ever reached by a ship of this class. The French have always been famous for their artillery. The 13-inch guns on the Dunkerque and Strasbourg have a range of 20 miles and can fire three 1200 pound shells every minute. The 5.1 inch guns on these ships have a range of 11,- 000 yards and can be used whether against ships or airplanes. The newer French destroyers armed with 6.5 inch guns have extraordinary power for such small ships.Their guns have a range of 25,000 yards and can fire 16 rounds per minute.Like the British navy, the French navy has already done an enormous amount of war work.It has escorted the transport of many army divisions from the African Empire without the loss of a single French soldier. Also French soldiers have been sent from the Mother Country to various strategic points in the French Empire.———— “Another great need, is for an economié order in America, so good and just and idealistic as to be immune to the intlltration of communism and facism.”—Dr, Everett R, Clinchy of Minneapolis, + "A leading colored minister of Detroit was asked to which church Joe Louis belongs. He replied: “Jae i8 a Baptist but he fights like a Methodist.” Dr.Henry C.Hawley, chairman of the department of business administration at Hobart College, Episcopal institution, recently stated that colleges should teach their students the merits of the profit system Instead of starting them out In the world “to fit into something they have been led to believe is rotten and unworkable,’ The news service of the National Catholic Welfare Conference reports that a law recently went into effect in Russia assigning 38,000 commissars to the red army for the propagation of atheism. Each battalion will have a commissar in charge of “atheistic training.” _ Gibraltar Lifts Ban and Permits Refugees to Land British military authorities at Gibraltar yielded to a public demonstration and finally permitted 12,000 refugees from Morocco, largely British, to disembark under four-day permits, according to, reports reaching the border town La Linea, Spain, recently. The demonstration was reported to have been staged -by civil- fans, soldiers, and policemen of Gibraltar. The authorities at first prohibited the disembark- ment. The refugees arrived aboard eight merchant ships from French Morrocco, mainly from Casablanca. It was reported that most .of them refused to take sa ship to Canada, planning to apply for permission to enter Spain instead.Military leaders were concerned over the situation, which was aggravated by engagements between British warships and raiding war planes.PRESENTS TROPHIES Jean Cagney, who today has the feminine leading role in Paramount’s ‘Golden Gloves,” has presented trophies to best sportsmen selected from the country’s best local Golden Gloves tourneys, which inspired the picture. To Be Kept Under the Hat The newest hats, they say, are built To give the features under A look of not exactly guilt, But rather wide-eyed wonder, And not alone the bonnet will Affect the face so bounded, For poppa, when he sees the bill, Will also look astounded! 4 5.1.inch guns.BOOK REVIEW LI.By ‘ HOWARD §.ROSS THE JAPANESE CANADIANS, by Charles H.Young, B.A, M.A, (McGill), and Helen R.Y.Reid, D.L.(McGill), Authors of The Ukrainian Canadians (1931), « With a Second Part on Oriental Standards of Living by Dr.W.A.Carrothers (University Br.Colombia).Edited by Professor Harold A.Innis, (Univ, of Toronto).Publishers, The University of Toronto Press, Toronto.(Second Edition) 285 Pages.Mr.Young, who has had wide experience (theoretical and practical) as a social worker in Canada and the United States, is executive secretary of The Federated Charities of Montreal. This reviewer has pleasant recollections of Mr.Young's parents and grandparents, natives of North Sydney, Nova Scotia, the boyhood home of both Mr.Young and of the reviewer, This useful volume was published under the auspices of the Canadian National Committees for Mental Hygiene and The Canadian Institute of International Affairs.‘Some of the chapters are; Japanese Immigration, Settlement and Expansion, Social Problems, Japanese-Canadian Society and its Institutions, Relations between the Japanese and White Canadians, Oriental Population, The Chinese in British Columbia and Oriental Standards of Living, As the authors point out in their introduction, the frontiers of the Occident and the Orient meet on our Pacific Coast, and the contact has given rise to one of Canada’s most interesting and perplexing problems. While Orientals are to be found in provinces outside of British Columbia to the extent of 19,380 Chinese and 1,137 Japanese, they are diffused among millions of whites on the prairies and in the industrial centres of the East.In British Columbia, however, there are 27,- 139 Chinese and 22,205 Japanese —approximately 50,000 Orientals for the Province or one Oriental for every thirteen white.Though rRumerically unimportant from the standpoint of the Dominion, they are extremely significant to the people of British Columbia, constituting what White Canadians on the Pacific Coast formerly called “The Oriental Problem.” It is pointed out that there are only 3,468 females, including women and children, in a total of 46,519 Chinese in Canada, so that ‘the Chinese are not feared by the Anti-Orientals.But the dual menace of a rapidly increasing Japanese population and fo their successful economic competition constitutes the present ‘Oriental Problem” of the North Pacific Coast. This penetrating, scholarly and sympathetic study is made in the hope that better relations between the Japanese and other racial groups In Canada will follow as a result of a more adequate knowledge of all the factors contributing to the situation. The last chapter summarizes the arguments centering around.‘The Japanese Question’ presents the measures advanced by different groups for the solution of the problem and gives the conclusions.British Attics Yield Aluminum British housewives are rummaging through attics and raiding their kitchens for aluminum ware in response to a Government appeal for the metal for use in British planes.A preliminary estimate placed the first day's returns at more than 100 tons in the larger cities, while heaps of pots and pans gathered in innumerable smaller towns remained unweighed.Chauffeurs of wealthy families Random PER eee ere" THURSDAY, JULY 25, 1940 2 2 MMA U AM SA ec.Byusueu KEN CHISHOLM er RZ) Jottings A few weeks ago we sat not far from Jack Dempsey in his Broadway restaurant and watched the old Manassa Mauler chat pleasantly with a few friends while he tugged away at a stogie.A few nights ago we saw a Dicture of the same ring terror of yesterday as he ploughed through a would-be wrestler. The shot was in a news film showing at a local theatre. All of which reminds one that Dempsey at the present time gy in the middle of what some are wont to describe as a ‘‘come-back,” It seems rather opportune to recall at this time a part of the popular ring heroes career which made the tiger of the ring the idol of fight fans everywhere.recollection will make better reading than what some of the sport writers and editors are saying about Jack at present, Let's recall that punch which was termed Dempsey’s $3,000, 000 punch, a sock he let fly in the direction of Jess Willard one day under a blazing Kansas sun.: Willard was defending his world title against Jack Dempsey, who in less than four years had battered his way to the front rank of the champion’s challengers.Four years previously Dempsey ‘had been a ragged hobo, bumming his way along the highways, riding the rods from city to city in search of fortune.Dempsey had known what it was to go hungry and now in striking distancd of his long- cherished ambition he -vas ablaze with determination.Unperturbed by the overwhelming physical advantages of Willard, Dempsey kept both fists swinging as Willard came in.He crouched, half-doubled over his studding gloves and with incred- Ible swiftness, shot a paralysing blow under Willard’'s heart. As it landed with a smack the cham- plon reeled against the ropes.Never has a more valuable blow been struck. Not even Dempsey realized the vast fortune it was to bring him.For that short, hammer-like right to Willards heart was pugil- {sm’s only $5,000,000 punch, That was the size of the fortune Dempsey, greatest money spinner in boxing history, amassed during his eight year as a champion, A $5,000,000 fortune founded on one punch! Even though it did not finish the fight the blow left Willard nothing more than a chopping block. As he staggered back, his mouth gaping with pain and his big fists hanging helplessly at his sides, Dempsey smashed a left to the chin, Never before had the gigantic Willard been knocked off his feet; now he spun like a top and keeled over with a crash that shook the ring, As soon as he climbed to his feet Dempsey was on him, his eyes nareowed to murderous slits, and as his terrible right fist landed again, Willard dropped for a second time. The rest of that dramatic opening round was the nearest thing to licensed murder that had ever been seen since the old knuckle- fighting days, when men slugged each other until they were blind or thelr limbs were crushed and broken.Seven times Willard went down.As the gong sounded he was sprawled across the canvass bleeding from the cuts and gaghes that Dempsey had opened on his battered countenance. So great was the excitement that the referee, failing to hear the sound of the going ending the round, counted the cham pion out and raised Dempsey's glove, His stern fighting face now relaxed into a joyous smile; Dempsey was executing a joyous little victory dance in his corner when the mistake became known. When told he must fight on he nodded grimly.Willard.half blind, reeled out for the second round. In a short time Dempsey’s savage attack had closed the other eye, but he managed to hang on through that round and one more before the towel was thrown into the ring.Such was the fight that started Dempsey on a carèer of world- fame—a fight in which he landed a $5,000,000 punch, Jack’s present comeback to the ring, and he has two victories to his credit, was necessitated according to those in the know, by need for cash.Imagine that; a man plants a $5,000,000 punch on Willard not too many years ago and today that man takes on men not tit to step in the ring in order that he may raise money to swell depleted coffers.Such, apparently, is the course of the great.—_— BUY MUCH STEEL Of expenditures made by railways in Canada und the United States during a year for materials and supplies — including fue] — 36 per cent goes for iron and steel products.BLIND TYPISTS Several blind ex-soldiers participated in a typewriting contest in Tokio, Japan.Probably the # Art of Camera From 18 Lands In Ottawa Show The sixth Canadian International Salon of Photographic Art opened some time ago at the National Gallery of Canada with an appealing exhibition of 178 selected pictures sent by 120 contributors from 18 countries.Last year's show drew 10,580 persons to the Gallery and its subsequent tour across Canada proved so popular that it is being .shown for the second time in Montreal while the current exhibition is in progress here.“There is great improvement in the Canadian work,” said H.O.McCurry, Acting Director of the National Gallery and one of the judges in selecting the pictures.“Good photography appeals to everyone and is a valuable link in interesting people in painting and drawing.” Canada is represented by 27 pictures from all parts of the Dominion and ranging from landscapes to seascapes and including may good urban.snapshots and portrait studies.Among other countries represented are England, Australia, the United States, France, Denmark, South Africa, New Zealand, China, Japan, Poland, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and India, Canadian Women Organize To Send Food To Europe A Canadian Overseas Food Association, under the patronage of Mrs.Albert Matthews, wife of the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, was organized here recently to gather and send food supplies overseas to hospitals, trenches and evacuated British women and children.A central oftice has been opened in Toronto, under the presidency Healy of Mrs.Willan.: The organization, formed by a group of volunteers, hopes to win co-operation of service clubs, women's organizations, manufacturers and individuals willing to help.Food for British women and children will be sent directly to the mayors of towns and cities to which they have been evacuated.Other supplies will be made available to Mrs.Vincent Massey's Canada House Fund in London and still others to hospitals in England, France and to the Canadian Red Cross.—_— Pressure Speaker (desirous of raising money) —All who wil] give $10 stand up.” (Aside to musician)—''Play the “Star-Spangled Banner.’ ”—Grit.Calvary Church Dorchester St., at Greene Ave.Westmount.Minister: Rev.T.W.Jones, M.A, D.D.Interim Pastor: Rev.A.F.Pollock, B.D.Preacher: Rev.Donald R.Morrison, Avonmore, Ont.11.00 a.m.The Kingship of Christ in Every Realm of Life.7.30 p.m.An Eternal Affirmation — God Reigneth.Come and worship fn this Friendly hurch. This fe the closing Sunday of the ministry of the Rev.Donald R.Morrison, and a hearty welcome is extended to all to say farewell to our rlen Westmount Baptist Church Sherbrooke St.W.& Roslyn Avs.J.Alexander Johnston, B.A., Minister, Mr.Shirley McKyes, Choir Leader Mrs.F.J.Hodgson, Organist 11 a.m.“DWELLING WITH ,DEVOURING FIRE” Our Strongest Defence in the Day of the Dictator.7.30 p.m.A BLOWN TRUMPET! many make these ideas turn into realities Leopold Stokowski, that dramatic and dynamic giant of musical knowledge, that magnetic personality of orchestral fame who, through appearing in several motion pictures is known to the world in general, not only to the musical people, had a small idea develop into a vital realism of importance to America. As he travelled as leader of the Philadelphia Orchestra, he found young instrumentalists anxious for an audition in every city they played in, but being such a busy man it was not always convenient to hear all of them, and as no more players were needed in his important personnel, it was rather a useless venture for the young aspiring musicians, He was surprised at the great talent many of these boys and girls possessed and the fine music chosen. The birth of the idea formed in Mr.Stokowski’'s mind through these music seekers and he made up his thoughts immediately to build an orchestra of 100 players, a youth orchestra, made up of American talent, so auditions were arranged by the National Youth Administration of each State, Fifteen thousand applied and of these, five hundred and sixty were selected by the judges for an audition with Stokowski.who personally travelled over the country to hear these talented voung people. He selected one hundred whom he thought the most gifted and they have been rehearsing diligently at a camp formed in Atlantic City. This novel orchestra is to give its first concert this week in that city and others in Baltimore, New York, and Washington before sailing on the steamship “Uruguay” on July 26 for South America on a musical mission of good-will.Next week we will tell you how these voung musicians have been training.R.M.R.Band Will Give Park Concert Last Friday true names of pelts should always bo shown when fanciful trade names are used (Ex: “Hudson Seal— dyed Muskrat’).Other provisions are designed to provent misleading or exaggerated statements or illustrations in order to give consumers fullest possible protection. The Better Business Burean further reports that during tho twelve month period ended July 15th, 1940, it had checked 2,166 fur advertisements. Some ludlcau- tion of the increased accuracy resulting from enforcements of the Standards ls shown by the fact that advertising errors declined from 627% during the first week of the year under review to an average of 8% during the last two months, The Better Business Bureau and the furriers urge tha buying public to become famillar with the provisions of the Standards.Copies will be supplied by the Bureau, or by members of ‘The Fur Standards Association,” upon request.Furriers who have agreed to support the Standards have bie come numbers of “The Fur Standards Association.” A proliminary Hat of members of this Assocla- tion follows: — A.J.Alexander Furs Ltd.Canadian Fur Auction Sales Co.Ltd.: Canadian Fur Co.Ltd.; Chas.Desjardins & Co, Lid.: Du- puls Frères Ltée: T, Eaton Co.Ltd.of Montreal; Alex.Fauchor; A.Giguère Enrg.; John Henderson & Co.; ltolt, Renfrew & Co.Ltd: la Belle Fourrure Ltée.: A.Lachance; UU, Mailloux; J.BR.McComber: Mercier & Dion; Hanry Morgan & Co, Ltd; Jas, A, Ogllvy's Ttd.: A.Plechet: J, F.Reld: Richer Moss lne.; Loslie B.Scott; Harrig Silver: Samuel Silver & Co.Ltd.; Robert Simp- gon (Montréal) Ltd: Gérard Thi- beault; J.B.Turcotte; J.Walsh Furs; Jay Wolfe Inc, Laurentian Ranges Among World’s Finest Playlands The Laurentian country, one of the most beautiful and unspoiled holiday fields in the North American continent, lles at the back door of Montreal. But a few short hours’ drive takes one to the heart of this land of green, rolling hills, pleasant valleys, winding rivers and tree fringed lakes, where the soft hreezes are heavy with odours of balsam and spruce and pine, and where the cool, dark forests and rippling streams abound with game and fish, According to geologists mysterious fascination age hangs over these mountains, but mighty ice caps have harrowed thelr sides, humbled the pride of their peaks, and have polished a chronicle of themselves on the scattered rocks which abound In this great region.Indian Camps The camps of the Indians, wise with centuries of nature lore fn their blood, were scattered throughout the million acres of the of great |- this natural park which strotehos for a thousand miles north to Hudson's Bay, Tho highost polut of the range is Mount Tremblant, rising 3.400 feet above tha sea known to the Indians as Manitou Ewitchi- Saga.” » Many of the Indian camps have now been replaced by modern hotels, whera excellent bathing, dancing, bridge, golf, tennis, riding, and motoring may be thoroughly enjoyed.Hunting and Wishing Others have been taken over to provide complete facilities for those who prefer to spond thelr vacations hunting and fishing in somo of the 35,000 lakes, and virgin forests, of the Laurentians, For the angler, trout and bass are abundant, MANY EXHIBIT Exhibits at the Swiss Industrial Fair in Berne this year totaled 1,060, BOY SERIOUSLY INJURED HERE TUESDAY NIGHT Donald Olivier, 11, 356 Kensington, in Montreal Neurological Institute Donald Oltver, 11, of 356 Ken- sington avenue, is in the Montreal Neurological Institute, suf- tering trom a fractured skull, a broken arm, lncerations, following an accident at the corner of St.Catherine sireet nnd Redfern avenue Tuesday night.reported that last night a broken jaw and ‘ “A Hospital authorities, hin _, chances of recovery were “good.” According to information obtained by police, after alighting from a street car.walked behind the rear of the tram into the side of an automobile driven by Gerald Hamil ton, 362 QGroavenor avenus, First rushed to Division of tha Montreal General + young Oliver.* 5 the Waster Hospital, he was later transferre: - to the Montreal Nourological In stitute, Liout.Kdmonstone, of the py lice department, investigated.MIC WORKERS GET INCREASE After extonding nogotiations agrovmont has been reached between a negotiating committee appointed by employees of the Montronl Tramways Company and the management.Working conditions have been agreed upon for the duration of the war or, In any case for a period of not loss than three yours, This agreement was sub: mitted to n reforendum vote of ° all employees yesterday and har boen nccoptad.4 There will be an wage Increar averaging five cents an hour re tronctive to July 1, 1940, and on waok'a holidays paid on'(he bas! England. She was the widow of the Earl of Minto, former Governor-General of Canada, and Viceroy of India. After three-quarters of a century of life in the royal and viceregal households of the British Empire, in her 80th year the widowed Countess undertook a new and courageous enterprise. She felt so keenly the need of a new spirit in international affairs that she abandoned her quiet retirement and travelled through Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean to foster in those countries the spirit which would lay the foundation for the new worid. On that voyage she made three airpl e flights, the first she ever made. The visits, which brought her to the palaces and the people, the governments and the press of six countries, were made in company with her elder sister, the Dowager Countess of Antrim; Bill Rowell, a London labor leader, formerly radical; Dr.Frank Buchman, American-born initiator of Moral Re-Armament; Mr.Frank Wool- ley-Hart, prominent British coal owner; and other friends. The effect of these visits was notewortHy.especially in Egypt and Palestine, where leaders and editors representing conflicting nationalities and political interests proclaimed that the hope of unity had been brought to them.In Great Britain, Canada and India where her husband initiated some notable reforms as Viceroy, the inf.uence of this crowning service has been widely felt and appreciated in the sast years of her life.In a message to Canada a year ago, she pointed to Canada's fu- ‘ture in these prophetic words: “I rejoice to know the response to Moral Re-Armament part in the conditions of the world,” heard Rev.E.J.Springett at the Forum enunciate the principles of the British Israel World Federation and climax his reasoning by declaring that the ‘‘last movement into Britain was made in 1066 by the Normans. There was never an Invasion since. There will never he another.” Building his address about the first premise of the British Israelites that modern Britain 13 both descendant of the ancient lost tribes of Israel and’ heir to the prophecies attributed to that race in the Bible, Mr, Springett followed “the history of that people to prove that the modern Ceito-Saxon race, when the present conflict is over, will lead the world into the formation of that Kingdom of God promised to the Israelites, In these times, said the speaker, it is possible to turn back through the pages of history to the time of the mighty Assyrian Empire to see that nation attempting to gain control of all the known world, The king of the beseiged people of Palestine gathered his people and told them “‘“‘to be strong and courageous.Be not dismayed or afraid : .for with us is the Lord, our God, to fight our battles.” ‘These words are just as true today;” said Mr.Springett.‘’Today Britain faces the greatest crisis in her history and in the history of man.Today Britain stands alone without any allies; not alone, but alone on her own soil.Today she is a sea-girt fortress and the fighting men of British stock and the best of those of her erstwhile allies stand ready to defend her, People Are Rexdy ‘The people of Britain are now vastly different, he went on.There has been a great awakening to the fact that the dictators would over run the whole of Europe, and “the mad beast, Hitler,” say the one bar to such domination by him is the British Empire. Thus, his hearers were told, ‘people who view the situation today ask if it is possible for Britain to withstand the attacks to be made against her, and from the human viewpoint it does not look very hopeful. But, there was never a time when they were more united and determined on victory, and Churchill continues optimistic, showing the typical ‘bulldog tenacity.’ “But the same assurance came before the French debacle,” Mr.Springett cautioned.“It will therefore take ail the material resources and faith we have to win.” He declared that his message for the evening was not a human one, but came from an: infallible source—the Bible, He said the British people had taken on a responsibility that has been theirs throughout the centuries, and with this realization are searching for guidance in a manner in which they never have before.“The number will continue to grow until we all realize that in that one Book there is the answer to the whole struggle.‘The reason for this claim is that we of the Celto-Saxon race are the Israel of God.We are Israel.” The Bible, the speaker held, is the story of the history of a nation.“In a certain time in human history, God came into contact with humanity and brought into being a race of people charged with a special responsibility. The Creator intended~ the world to be the hap- Huns In Force Will Not Land, Says Commissioner fully ripe berries, PRL: piest place—with the best it could have, “There is much that does not make for human well-being, for history is filled with wars and the fears of wars, plagues, famines. Why, some people ask, does -God allow it?God does not will that humanity should suffer so.These things are the natural result of man's rebellion against the will of God,” Mr, Springett asserted.Perfect Plan Evolved There is, however, he continued, a perfect plan for a social system, economic order and system of administration for the leaders of the human race, These leaders, it was expiained, began as those whom God declared should go into exile—be lost to the contaminating influence of the world as it was to be for the next few thousands of years—to come to a specially appointed place in the world and be free. Thus, the 10 tribes seemingly vanished, even from their own knowledge of their identity, it was avewred. Now, he contended, archaeological explorations are beginning to trace their wanderings, over the Caucasus mountains, along the Mediterranean and the Baltic to the coastlands of Europe. They became known by various names, such as Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Normans, Bretons, and one by one each tribe penetrated the “isles of the sea at the uttermost part of the world,” and the last of these were the Normans, who crossed the sea in 1066, Since then, other hordes, such as those of Philip of Spain and Napoleon Bonaparte, had tried unsuccessfully to invade the land.“By virtue of their appointment the British people are destined to lead,” said Mr.Springett.To ringing applause, he declared “the German army will never land in Britain in force.” 4x | © For Jelly Lovers | When serving jelly do you say “What flavor do you wish?” Or merely place a jelly moid Upon your
