Press, K.W.F.Cooper Declares — The Inventor of Printing Was Inspired By Desire to Bring Bible to Millions “The newspaper represents the most influential manifestation of print. It has been clearly demonstrated that when a ruler desires to deprive a people of hard-won individual liberties, the first thing he must do is throttle the printing press. For while compositors set type and pressmen run presses, human liberties cannot be abridged”.K.W.F.Cooper stated while addressing the regular weekly luncheon meeting of the Westmount Rotary Club in Victoria Hall yesterday.Speaking on “Printing’s Contribution to World Progress,’ Mr.Cooper told the gathering that the inventor of printing, a German named Johann Gutenberg tirelessly pursued his efforfs because there CITY ACQUIRES BLOCK OF LOTS FOR NEW PARK Municipal Employees Have Been Putting Site in Shape: Since Start of Summer The city has acquired a new block of lots to round out the north side of the new Summit Park on top of Westmount Mountain, it was announced this week. The area is composed, in the main, of land purchased some time ago from McGill University. The lots were purchased from the Royal Bank of Canada for a total of $26,600.They are without buildings and front on Summit Circle, Normount avenue, Oakland avenue and Eastmount avenue, City park employees have been putting the site in shape since the beginning of the summer but little is being done to mar its natural beauty. Thus far all that has been attempted is removal of weeds and debris and the clearing of land for paths, Trees, shrubbery, etc.have been left untouched. No announcement has yet been made by city officials as to whether any landscaping or other undertaking is contemplated. There appears little probability that any form of playground apparatus will be installed, but there is no indication as to whether benches and other park facilities will be placed on the grea.Death Of Woman Due To Fracture Mrs.Nellie Stracey, of 7 Park Place, met her death on July 6 from a fracture caused by a fall from a rear coach of a Canadian National Railways Train near Hawthorne, Ont., a coroner's jury at Ottawa found Friday Light, Mrs.Stracey stepped off the moving train on which she was a passenger on her way to Ottawa. She was seated in the last coach on the train and apparently thought there was another car at the rear.* burned within him a desire to print the Bible so that greater numbers of his fellow men might come under the influence of its teachings.Perhaps the condition in which the world finds itself today is tracable to the death in Germany some nine or 10 years ago of the high principles held by Gutenberg, and German printers ceased to regard as the finest piece of copy they could set in type and print—the Bible, and instead have given over their art to the printing of a symbol of hate, terrorism, brutality and un- Godliness — the Swastica,” the speaker declared.Mr.Cooper traced the history of printing from the year of its invention 1440.‘So accustomed are we to an abundance of printed matter that it is not easy for us to hark back to the 15th century when the average family did not.own.a.single.hook.The.man who did own a book was an object of curiosity to his nelghbory.A person had to be wealthy to alford ten or 20 books and even successful business men and craftsmen of that day could not read or write their own business letters or contracts and called in a professional] scribe or clerk to do this work for them. The Latin grammer books used then had to be handwritten by a scribe and required a minimum of two weeks to write with the result that education was limited to wealthier families.Seventeen out of the first 19 pieces of printing known to have been produced by Gutenberg were successive editions of the’ Latin grammar which was so sorely needed by the rapidly increasing number of school boys, the speaker said.Only after this first emergency was met and printing had worked through the experimental stage did Gutenberg turn to the ralization of his ambitions —the printing of the Bible.Describing the difficulties the inventor had acheving this ambition, Mr.Cooper said, that after finally raising capital and entering partnership with another German named Fust the latter foreclosed on the loans before the great book was completed and Gutenberg was squeezed out of the enterprise. While the book commonly referred to as the Gutenberg Bible included no statement as to where, when or by whom it was printed, from a document recording the lawsuit between Fust and Gutenberg the identity of the men engaged in its production was established, Mr, Cooper said. The speaker was Introduced by P.Jarman and thanked by George Wakeman.W.Boyd Robson oc- cupied the chair.«Victoria Hall Affected By Ruling On Marriages While the announcement from Ot:awa that men who married on or after July 15 would be consid- éred as single when the drafts of men called up for military train- Ing for home defence were made up, caused an unprecedented Tush on churches, it had the very opposite effect on another favor- lis place of bridal couples — Victoria Hall.A large number of cancellations were received from persons intending to hold wedding receptions there during the latter part ©! July and August as a result of the desire on the part of would- be couples to marry ahead of the teadling, .am - Tu mem ‘À Time lacking in which to alter reception invitations or even to arrange such functions they were automatically cancelled. The war has also further affected the general run of things at the hall. The British-Israel Federation, wHich has held meetings there in the past.will in future have to seek larger quarters.Due to the subjects of their speaker, Rev.E.J.' Spring- ett, on Biblical prophesies of current events, the crowds that have turned out to bear him have been unable to obtain accomodation at the hall.At the last meeting 1,800 filled the building in which the main auditorium can seat bat about 600, | Victoria Hall ’ Now Being Renovated Victoria Hall is presently undergoing renovations in preparation for the fall season and the regular maintainance staff is busy painting, cleaning and making general repairs to the building.A large number of improvements were made to the hall during the past winter when new drapes were hung, indirect lighting installed and rooms remodelled and re-upholstered.By the beginning of the next social season the building’s interior will be the most attractive since its erection.NEARLY FULL QUOTA GAINED BY BATTALION Seven Hundred Recruits in Unit of RM.R.Will Parade This Evening Recruiting in the Second Battalion of the Royal Montreal Regiment for voluntary training has been suspended for the time being, nearly the full quota having been reached, it was announced this week.Enrolment will be resumed early next week if this is found necessary. In the meanwhile the evenings are being taken up with medical examinations, swearing in and organization by companles. This evening at 8 o'clock 700 recruits will be on parade, At the previous parade on Monday night the first batch, 200 gtrong, Lurn-| ed out fn Westmount Park immediately adjoining the R.M.R.Armoury and was given elementary instruction in drill, The First Battalion of the R.M.R.of the C.A.S.F.is continuing to accept recruits. The registration office is in the armoury.HITLER TRUE 10 PROPHELY, PASTOR DAYS Rev.J.A.Johnston Gives Second Address in Series at Baptist Church “Hitler resembles the prophetic beast of Revelation more closely than any man in history, not even excluding Attila or Napoleon,” Rev.J.A, Johnston stated in his second address on the theme, “The Mark of the Beast,” in Westmount Baptist Church Sunday night. The world is living in momentous times, amid a “blitzkrieg of evil,” when Biblical prophecy is merging into history, the minister declared.Referring to the book Mein Kempf, Mr.Johnston stated that Hitler confessed that his bitter anti-Semetism developed from the day of his youth when he regarded Jews as Germans until his fanatical belief that he was the instrument of the Almighty to destroy them.Mr.Johnston saw in the attempt of Hitler to force all Europe to accept the pattern of totalitarianism a parallel with the declaration of the prophetic beast when it said in Revelations that “As many as would not worship the image of the beast, should be killed.” He concluded that the destruction of the ‘contemporary beast’ is sure, and said that Christians today should ask themselves, “Am I wearing the mark of the beast or the brand of the Lamb.” for the ‘only way to overcome the beast 1s by the Blood of the Lamb.” Chief Gough Elected Association Director Chief Walter Gough, of the Westmount Police and Fire Departments, was elected director of No.1 section, Island of Montreal, of the Quebec Police and Fire Chiefs Association, at the annual meeting of the organiza- tion held at Hull last week, ; R.Y.Reid, (Authors of The Ukrainian Canadians (1986), -ith a Second Part on Oriental Standards of Living by Dr.W.A.Carrothers, adited by Professor Harold A.Innir.Published by The University of Toronto Press, Toronto, This useful volume was published under the auspices of the Canadian National Committee for Mental Hygiene and The Canadian Institute of International Affairs. Some of the chapters are: Japanese Immigration,” Settlement and Expansion, Soclal Problems, Japanese-Canadian Society and its Institutions, Relations between the Japanese and White Canad- Oriental Population, the Chinese ians, in British Columbia, and Oriental Standards of Living. As the authors point out in their introduction, the frontiers of the Occident and the Orient meet on our Pacific Coast, and the contact has given rise to one of Canada’s most interesting and perplexing problems. While Orientals are to be found in provinces out- ‘side of British Columbia, to the extent of 19,380 Chinese and 1,- 137 Japanese, they are diffused among millions of whites on the prairies cnd in the industrial centres of the East.In British Columbia, however, there are 27,- 139 Chinese and 22,205 Japanese —approximately 50,000 Orientals for the province—or one Oriental for every thirteen whites.Though numerically unimportant from the standpoint of the Dominion, they are extremely significant to the people of British Columbia, constituting what - hite Canadians on the Pacific Coast call the “Oriental Problem.” It is pointed out that there are only 3,468 females including women and children in a total of 46,519 Chinese in Canada and are not feared by the anti-Oriontal- ists. But the dual menace of a rapidly increasing Japanese population and of their successful economic competition constitutes the present ‘Oriental Problem” on the Pacific Coast. This penetrating, scholarly and sympathetic study is mace in the hope that better relations between the Japanese and other racial groups in Caanda will follow as a result of a more adequate knowledge of all the factors contributing to the situation.Canadian Authors To Ask Why A Tax On Book Royalties The Council of the Canadian Authors Association, meeting in Ottawa decided to survey the royalties situation and later make representations to Government authorities. It was pointed out that royalties on books written by Canadian authors are regarded by the Government as unearned income and taxed accordingly.Members of the Council indicated that Canadian authors are wondering how this conclusion is arrived at, since writing a book entails time and labor and when sold on a royalty basis there is no down payment. The meeting, under the chairmanship of Mrs.Madge MacBeth, National President, approved a proposal to admit young Canadian writers to the Association us junior affiliates to encourage and aid them In making contributions to Canadian literature.Council members sald it was hoped to open new branches of the Association next year at Charlottetown and Saint John. The Council noted with approval that the Australian Government made a grant early this year for the encouragement of creative arts, and the suggestion was made at the meeting that the Canadian Government be approached at a suitable time and asked to consider a similar grant.PLAN SAMPLE FAIR Brazil plans to hold an Inter-
