The magnitude of Canada’s war effort was vividly delineated by the Prime Minister, Monday, when he reviewed what had been done since the preceding Parliament dissolved. Most striking of all the figures Mr.King quoted was the probable cost of the war in dollars to us — at least $700,000,000 during the coming year, and probably much more — which will give us a budget approximating one and a half billions of dollars for the year when all expenditures his is an astounding figure for a population of ten millions — and makes the annual railway deficit, about which some of us used to worry, seem insignificant.War brings forth great effort, and the fact that no competent authority has expressed the slightest doubt of our ability to stand the strain financially speaks volumes of the extent of our national wealth and resources. It is apparent that the “pay as we go'' policy, adopted at the commencement of the war, has been discarded in favour of a policy of buying evervthing we need or might need in the successful prosecution of the war.Eventually we shall probably go “all out” in the war effort by nationalizing all war industries — as the enemy did long ago, and as they are talking about doing in Britain — and by refinancing the national debt as they have been proaressively doing in Britain for some years. The interest we have to pay on our indebtedness is a stone neck that is a severe handicap in war-time.Such drastic measures would, however, cause some dislocation and round our national a terrific barrage of criticism, be attempted for some time at least.Other figures quoted by, the Prime Minister are also surprising — that we are building ninety nine thousand motorized vehicles of war, and eighty-two airdromes; that we are spending eighty million dollars annually.on munitions; that we now have in training nearly twelve thousand airmen in addition to the ground crews, and that there - ships of war, .sufficient faith was are included.munity will abolition of wars, and will not number is few.are now over 100,000 enlisted men in the army. Our efforts today, as compared with the last great war, are not nearly so spectacular but are obviously on an infinitely more CONFIDENCE IN FUTURE Reports that there is a revival of building in various parts of Canada contain welcome indications of returning prosperity. When people start building, it means that money is The fact that much of the money is being spent on homes bears an even more welcome It is a proof that the Canadian people, in the midst of the greatest threat which has ever faced the British Empire, have in the ultimate success of British arms to go ahead calmly planning for a long and prosperous future in the Dominion.RECREATION IN TIME OF WAR While there are some who would, like the Germans, eliminate recreation and sports in time of war, such sentiments do not find any response in this country.value of healthy recreation, especially in times of great duress like the present. It is therefore with satisfaction that we note an increase in outdoor sports this Spring, especially in those sports that are participated in by great numbers of people.recreation is essential in building strong, vigorous people as well as affording mental relief — an antidote events of the day.In this district, all our parks and other recreational facilities being used practically to capacity — a very satisfactory state of affairs, THE GREAT PEACEMAKER Some words uttered by Archdeacon A.P.Gower-Rees in a speech at Toronto Monday night are worth repeating: "The world com- some day find unity in the tariff acceptance of the idea that this world of mutual dependence and specialization cannot live side by side with a world of tariff If we would hasten peace and cooperation, this universal peace-maker, commerce, must be given greater liberty.Every inquisitorial requirement at the frontier is a ligature binding the feet of the peace-maker in: the world.” How few statesmen there are in the world that recognize that great fact! Napoleon, helu- med in by overwhelming armies, was launching his desperate cam- palgn against Russia.Wellington was making his final effort to free Spain. In North America, the United States, knowing that Britain had been forced to withdraw most of her regular troops to the main theatre, was preparing to take advantage of her absorption in the war beyond the Atlantic, to invade and seize’ Canada.Thomas Jefferson could write in those days: ““The acquisition of Canada this year, as far as the neighbourhood of Quebec, will be a mere matter of marching.” Canada thought differently and in ‘ addition to conscripting a force of 3,800 half-trained militia ‘was able to take the field wilh 6,000 to 7,000 regulars, veterans and ‘’Fencibles.” Montreal was called upon to provide “2,000 batchelors between the ages of 18 and 25 years.” Through the dust and turmoil and the crowds excited by the prospect of an American invasion rode a handful of but 60 volua- teers, mounted men these with Captain George Platt at their head, and with Robert Gillespie as their lieutenant, and John Mol- son as the cornet of horse. There was no regular cavalry in the province.Good horses were scarce, hence every cavalryman was exceptionally useful. The frontier was so long that adequate patrolling exhausted all but mounted troops. The country was so wild and rugged and so poorly provided with roads that simply to move through It wore alry. All through that winter they performed a multitude of duties; all through 1813 they continued under arms until peace was signed the day before Christmas, 1t is invidious to draw attention to the fine work done by all Canadians in that war of long ago.But the Montreal troop showed up particularly well. When the American forces withdrew foHowing their repulse at Lacolle Mill on May 17, 1813, it was Captain Pratt's men who saw them safely across the border.Just over 20 years later came another bog test.It was in 1837.The girl-Queen Victoria was not six months on the throne when bloody rebellion broke out in the “colony.” There were furious riots, struggling mobs, charging troops.Again the troop carried out its duty loyally and efficiently, s0 well that it left few if any traces of bitterness behind it.During the period 1550 to 1866 the Montreal troop of Cavalry what with Canada being compelled to frame her own defence owing to Britain's needs in the Crimean War, and the threatening military situation due to the extension of the Fenian movement from Ireland to the United States, had motive aplenty for the strictest training. It came at last.Another June, this time ‘in the year of '66.On he first day of that month the Fenians invaded the Niagara pen- insnla. On June 2 enthusiastic crowds were cheering troops off to the front. The threat hastened Confederation, Canada becoming United the next year.Skirmishes went on despite Canadian preparations until in 1870 came the “battle” of Eccles Hill, “Ginirli” O'Neill, who commanded the Fenians, was arrested by the General ster, United States Marshal, who previously had warned him against the intended invas- fon.On May 29 the whole Canadian force was given a magniticent dinner by residents on BOTH sides of the border. For the next 30 years there was little to stir the blood of the soldier beyond the ordinary routine, camps and drill, drill] and camps. Two events of importance to the unit itself occurred, however, one being the small-pox riots, the other.a change of designation. In 1894, the Montreal troop, became “No.1 troop, Duke of Connaught's Royal Canadian Hussars.A name hallowed by tradition and over 80 years oid went Into the discard, but oniy for a time.On July 1, 1897 came the last and greatest changes and honor: out all military arms but the cav- | ‘The Montreal Hussars will in future be known as ‘The Duke of York’s Royal Canadian Hussars’ The old “Royal” designation granted the Montreal cavalry in 1813 had been saved and the Royal white rose of Yorkshire had been transplanted to Canada.October, 1899: War between Great Britain and the Boers in South Africa—All Canada insists that troops be sent out of the country for the first time, ‘to South Africa. The men of the Duke of York's were in the forefront. They were to be found in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles, then the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th C.M.R.'s, and the Canadian Field Artillery. It was to the first-named unit, principally, that the'Duke of York's are indebted for the battle honor, “South Affica 1900.” August, 1914: ‘‘Great Britain has declared war on Germany.” The regiment was placed on active service, but the men got too impatient with guarding the Sou- langes canal and other home duties, and gradually melted away. They joined Princess Pat's, Lord Strathcona’s Horse, the artillery and when it was decided that no Hussars, only Mounted Rifles would go overseas, the balance Joined the 5th C.M.R.'s that was recruited in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and the surrounding country, Major D.E.Cameron, who became Lieutenant Cameron in the Princess Pat’s, was the first man of the regiment to be killed— March, 1915, The 5th C.M.R's after their training jn England went .ovez- sods as a dismountéd unit, formed part of the “C.M.R.” brigade. It was January, 1916.The “bad luck of the C.M.R’s’” became proverbial. They went through the ‘’bloodbath” ‘of the Somme — Maple Copse where Colonel Baker was mortally wounded; Courcelette; Regina Trench. It was October 1.Every action the brigade had been engaged in had proved a massacre.; At Regina Trench terrific ar- tiHery fire, swaths of machine- gun fire from hostile strongholds blew the 5th to bits as it smashed its way through uncut wire as the remnants took its objective with bombs and bayonet. The counter bombardment turned the newly-won position into g slaugh- ter-house, but still the survivors hung on until, learning that no other unit had reached its objective it fell back under orders to its former position.Hundreds of dead and wounded C.M.R's was the price for this page of glorious history.Vimy Ridge, where Canada came to nationhood; Lens, Pass- chendaele, where the Canadians were called in after others had failed.Major J.R.Pearkes was awarded the Victoria Cross. Then the Battle of Amiens—QGermany’s black day.The 5th took Folies, Bouchier and the outskirts of Le Quesnoy.Their bad luck had passed. At Monchy Lieutenant C.8S.Rutherford, M.C., M.M.(showing he had won decorations for bravery both as a private soldier and as an officer) moved forward alone. Two German officers and 43 men with:three machine-guns awaited him in a pill-box.He bluffed them into surrendering.Another pill-box and 35 men gave him more trouble, He captured them too, enabling the advance to proceed. He was awarded the Victoria Cross.November 11 .In the grey morning the last show fire of guns and random rifles died away. The 5th C.M.R's looked back over the wet roads of France and Flanders strewn with hundreds of dead comrades, to home and Canada, saved by their years of patient gallantry, their supreme victory. The post-war years of re-bulld- ing were as difficult as any io the long history of the regiment.but today the 17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars possess as fine an armory as any in Can- and thanks to a long line of brilliant commanding officers — Lieut.-Col.E.Gill, M.C., who served in the 5th C.M.R’s, Lieut.- Col.L.M.Hooker, who served overseas with the Royal Montreal Regiment as did the present distributed 30 baskets of food and clothing at Christmas, collected stamps, pencils, scribblers, magazines and sundry articles which were sent out West, held an entertainment for the Little Sisters of the poor and also the Sisters of service, distributed 200 cards for the Catholic Charities Campaign, held a Rummage Sale and helped dréss some children for their First Communion. The Social Life Committee, under the chairmanship of Miss Phyllis McKenna, completed a most successful year. Some of its activities, were the following: an entertainment at the Sailor's Institute on 27th September, an informal party on Hallowe'en, an entertainment and tea after the December Reception, a tea and presentation in honor of Miss Florence Brennan, a former prefect, an informal party in January, a St.Patrick's show, Emerald Fantasy, the Springtime Social, and a tea after the May Reception, This committee is also looking after the arrangements for the breakfast to be held on June 2nd at the Ritz Carlton Hotel for the Sodalists and their mothers. This will be held following the eight o'clock Mass. The Publicity Committee, Miss Philippa Jackman chairman, was responsible for issuing a news.sheet each month and, apart from this, looked after publicity for the general meetings and any other activities of the Sodality. This committee sponsored the April monthly meeting at which Murray Ballantyne was guest speaker.During the year the Sodality organized a Red Cross group and meetings were held weekly in the Westmount Headquarters.A substantial number of articles were made by the girls and wool was distributed to be made up during the summer months. The electlon of officers then took place and the following were re-elected: Miss Alma Tremblay, prefect; Miss Betty Brennan, vice- prefect; Miss Mary MacIntyre, recording secretary; Miss Marie Doran, treasurer.Miss Helen Shaw was elected corresponding secretary. It was also announced that the sum of $230.00 had been presented to Reverend Father It Is Not Responsible For Fall of Woman at Upper Belmont and Edgehill A previous judgment by Mr.Justice A.Chase Casgrain condemning Westmount to pay Miss Fiora Emma Peters $3,076 damages for injuries she received in a fall on December 7, 1957, at the intersection of Edgehill ave- une and Upper Belmont road, was appealed by the city in the Court of King's Bench on Monday. The city is appealing on the grounds that every possible precaution was taken to keep the sidewalks and streets in good condition. It claimed that 14 inches of snow fell between Dec.6 and 7 and as this was followed by freezing of slush left on the road surface, it was impossible to keep the whole of the 53 miles of streets clear continuously. It was claimed that the mishap was due to force majeure and not neglect. When the case came before the lower court the city engineer had stated that he knew of no city in Canada that takes as good care of its streets as Westmount.Counsel for the respondent told the court that the snowstorm had stopped ten hours before the mishap and that had the intersection been properly sanded she would not have fallen on a city surface. The *ppeal was taken under advisement, Charbonneau, Char- bonneau and Charlebois appeared for the city and A.S.Bruneau for the respondent.Auto Strikes Other Then Fails To Stop Sideswiped by a car that failed to stop after the accident, an automobile 25 years was rector of St.Andrew's Church, will return to his old pulpit as the guest preacher there on Sunday morning.Dr.Clark wielded a tremendous influence with the congregation of St.Andrew's during many critical hours of national and ecclesiastical life.During the last Great War he brought comfort and strength to countless persons because he, himself, suffered greatly. He was one of the foremost leaders during the church union movement. There are a great many persons in Westmount today at whose weddings he officiated and whose children and grand-child- ren he baptized.Although Dr.Clark is now approaching his 80th birthday as a preacher, he is considered to he as dynamic as ever and his natural force unabated. Many of his old friends and associates will welcome this opportunity of hearing him, At the evening service, Rev.Colin Rudd, who has been associated with Dr.Kerr as student- assitant, will preach at the church for probably the last time as he expects his ordination will take place the following Wednesday night.pe Mere knowledge != comparatively worthless unless digested into practical wisdom and common sense as applied to the affairs of ‘land, of a long line of educational leaders. Both her grandparents were outstanding men, her paler- nal grandfather “ounded the Oxford Couniy Grammar School for private pupils.More than 200 boarders attended this school, in addition to a large number of day scholars.Following his death the school was carried on by his son.His daughter also had a large boarding school for many years. This school was in the same house in which John Hamp- den had been educated 200 years previous.Miss Doxsey was educated at two private schools and later be- gan work as a privale secretary. After a few months’ work with Mr.Hancock Nunn, he drafted her to his Social Work and she ultimately became branch secretary, under the Hampstead Council of Social Workers.Hampstead was a pioneer district, where Mr.Nunn brought together the social agencies into the closest co-op- eration.During the years that Miss Doxsey worked with Mr.Nunn, he developed the Council which was a prototype of the Financial Federation of Charities here. She trained an organized a staff of voluntary workers, whose chief efforts were centred around the relief work of the Council.Miss Doxsey and her staff strived to rehabilitate families in temporary distress of all kinds, she also worked in a broad way for the building up of ch“racter, and because of her association with Mr.Nunn, this has been the motive power of all her work, through- out her life. Her experiences under the; Council were many and varied, and ranged from sharing in the | administration of the First Public Fund for the Unemployed in, the depression early in the cen-; tury following the Boer War, to | the care of all the Tubercular pa-| tients in the district. She was, responsible for the home and medical care of children in three large elementary schools, and for many years was registrar for all relief cases. This register was created to avoid overlapping and entailed a great deal of investigation work.Shortly after the Great War Miss Doxsey suffered a breakdown, partly due to the nervous strain of life with its frequent air raids and partly due to the prolonged illness of her mother.Upon her recovery she achieve the ambition of her life, and went to Westhill Training College, one of the Selly Oak Colleges, near Birmingham.Westhill is the official college for the training of Directors of Young Peoples’ and Sunday School work, and is recognized by the Teachers’ Registration Council and the National Froebel Union for the training of day school and kindergarten teachers.Until her health was fully established Miss Doxsey worked under the London County Council, and the Kensington Board of Guardians ,then the authority for State Relief. She was the only woman officer in a large Borough containing some of the blackest spots of London’s poverty.where SCHOOL BOY'S All Expense ACROSS CANADA TOUR Personally Conducted by MR.HAROLD BOTT Of The Montreal High School From June 28 to August 18 51 took post graduate work.through private coaching from an ex-college principal, Mr.Arthur Burrell, who also taught her story telling, public speaking and voice production following her FEMININE FACTS AND FANCIES by MARGARET BARDEN did extensive lay preaching throughout Europe. Her most outstanding sermon was preached in the Irish Presbyterian Church in Damascus, Syria. She later spent several weeks doing the same type of work in Egypt and Palestine. In the course of her {ravels, she has visited every important country in the world, including Germany, Italy, Swit- zeriland and France. In 1927 and 1928 she was named honorary secretary of a committee of the National Sunday School teachers and superintend- ants all over England. She was also an extension lecturer at West Hill College.Family conditions brought her career fo a sudden end in England during 1928, when she came to Canada to care for a motherless child of a relative. Before she had been in this country three months, she was lecturing and conducting a teachers’ training course for Religious Education in the Province of Quebec. When circumstances released her from her obligation to her relatives, she decided to remain in Canada and give her whole time as an honorary secretary of the Children’s Work Board of that council. With all her previous experience of co-operative work.she was able to bring together four denominations in a Teachers’ Training Course, which she had stated In Erskine Church, and moved to Divinity Hall the first year it was bullt. She also sevived the idea of Vacation Church School, which has heen steadily increasing since 1933.She conceived the bringing to Canada, the inestimable privilege of a practical training for Sunday School workers, similar to Westhill College.idea of who Lad his first Sunday School experience in Montreal and the Province, and who had done 0 much In furthering the movement in England, was prevailed upon to return to this country by Miss Doxsey. It was hoped that this new venture would develop into a ycar-round college, but due to the scarcity of people and the mutual jealousy between the provinces, Lhe fulfillment of this throughout the Province, Superintendent of Ers- kine, and later Erskine-American Church Sunday School, she was also Junior superintendent during the same period of time, a position she still holds. This posi; tion not only involves the teaching of chilldren, but the training of teachers as well, In the spring of 1938, Miss Doxsey shared in Mrs.Heslam’s school work and in September of that year, they formed a partnership at the Beacon Study. The school is Miss Doxsoy's home, and the home atmosphere is no inconsiderabla contribution to the success of the establishment. In speaking of this, Miss Doxsey sald that it has been a (remen- dous change to devole her whole time to close personal work, with a small group, but it Is most satisfying and she is achieving, In middle age, her mother's ideal for her,
