week, Several by-laws received cons sideration during the year.The traffic by-law was completely revised, A new anti-noise bylaw was adopted, and four sanitation by-laws regarding beauty parlors and revenue act affected residents by imposing an eight per cent sales tax on the amount of electric light bills.COMMUNICABLE DISEASES DOWN DURING 1939 Total of 353 Cases Oc- curred in Westmount Last Year Annual Report Reveals There was a total of 353 cases of communicable diseases in Westmount in 1939, an increase of 207 over the previous year but a decrease of 483 over 1937 and of 906 over 1936, the annual report of the municipality Issued this week reveals.There were 50 cases of chicken pox; one of Erysipelas; German Measles, 5; Infantile Paralysis, 1; Measles, 173; Mumps, 19; Scarlet Fever.39; Streptococcic Throat, 2; Tuberculosis, 17 and Whooping Cough, 486.Certificates Issued In conformity with the Provincial By-Law, 349 certificates were issued to school children permitting them to return to school following recovery from communicable diseases.During the year the Public Health nurse made 456 home visits in the supervision of communicable diseases.Forty-five patients were admitted to the Alexandra Hospital from Westmount during the year.Disinfection was carried out in fifty homes where communicable diseases had occurred and where disinfection was mecessary.No Diphtheria There were no cases of »diphtheria during the year.In the month of November the Public Health Nurse visited 100 children of familles in the low-income group to ascertain if they had been Boxes In Apartments When she pleaded guilty to eight charges of stealing leiters from mail boxes in Westmount apartment houses, a 16-year-old girl was remanded for a week for sentence, in the Montreal Juvenile Court Tuesday.The girl, whosq name was withheld due to her age, was arrested in Westmount by Captain-Detec- tive Broden and Sergeant- Detective Tremblay, on March 29.She is said hy police to reside in the west end of Montreal, In one instance, police charge, she stole a letter containing a check of a value of $75.She cashed this at a bank, depositing $50 to her uwn account and taking out the remaining $25 in cash, Lochl detectives the case following complaints from a number of apartment dwellers who reported that their mail was not being received.They arrested the girl after a careful check-up on tbe buildings in question.The girl, they say, opened the letter hoxes with a wide assortment of keys, or when this method failed pulled letters out of the boxes with a piece of wire.The
