majority in the entire province.appointment was expected, but some surprise was expressed that Gordon Hyde, elected in West- mount, was omitted from the Cabinet, as announced last night. Many of his supporters had hoped he would be included.Next to the office of Premier, the Treasury is the most important of the entire slate, being the provincial equivalent of the federal Ministry of Finance. In appointing Mr.Mathewson to this important portfolio, the Premier followed the tradition which decrees that a French Cathdlic will be Premier, and an English Protestant his chief associate. It is assured that the Godbout- Mathewson relationship will be happy and successful, for of all the leaders of the minority in this Province, none’ is held in higher esteem, by the French people than the new Treasurer.Mr.Mathewson speaks French fluently, reads it and writes it.He is known throughout the entire Province as a man who thoroughly understands the French - Canadians their aspirations Canadian Legion, His Excellency Lord Tweedsmuir, Gov- ernor-General of Canada, recently said, has an important part to play in the present crisis. The war work it has recently accepted at the invitation of the Federal Government has borne out the truth of the Governor-General's statement.‘Left over from the days and years prior to September 3, 1939, however,.is one of the most ‘important df the tasks to ‘which’ the Legion, ever since its formation, has dedicated itself, That is the annual Poppy Day appeal.Although the Poppy Day campaign this year will be held at a time when the thoughts of everyone are concentrated on present hostilities and new international problems, the difficulties of the last war are by no means completely solved. It would be most unfortunate, in the words of Brigadier W.W.Foster, D.S.0., V.D., Dominion president of the Legion, “if, in the excitement of the moment, the veterans of the former war were forgotten, and the people of Canada were not given the opportunity of continuing their practical support of those veterans who served the Empire at the time of trial 25 years ago.” Head Campaign Heading the campaign in Montreal and district this year are Col.Andrew Fleming, V.D.and Lt.-Col.E.J.Nantel, V.D., as joint chairmen. All branches of the Legion throughout the area are co-operating one hundred per cent in street collections and publicity efforts, and are being strongly backed by the I.0.D.E.NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL “Honoring the Dead While Remembering the Living” under the direction of Mrs.L.St.J.Haskell, and sll the Womens’ Auxiliaries, besides a special women’s committee who will collect in the financial district under the supervision of Mrs.Frederick Rea.The special names committee, headed this year by Major Walter Scott, M.C., is making a special effort to increase last year's fine list of donations and subscriptions, and early reports appear to justify their optimism.Under the dir- the street sales committee have organized the area so as cover every -possible source, with the Remembrance branch being in charge of Notre Dame de Grace and Hampstead, All that remains now is for the public to give generously.Last year the total revenue from collections and subscriptions amounted to $23,300 and the total number of cases assisted totalled 1,054, including 233 single men and 821 families. In the latter there were 2,731 children and 776 wives and mothers. In addition 38 widows with dependent children were assisted and seven widowers. Is Symbol “I would like to add,” Col.Fleming concluded, “that the financial results are not the - primary purpose of the Canadian Legion. The poppy has been immortalized as the emblem of sacrifice, and it is the desire of the Canadian Legion that on Remembrance Day every man, woman and child ir Canada should wear this emblem in memory of the sacrifices of the Great War.“The appeal, therefore, is that in honoring the dead we are not forgetting the living.” The Parent-Teacher Association of Shaare Hashomayim Synagogue, of Westmount, will inaugurate a series of public armistice which ended the Great War of 1914-1918 will be commemorated genzral- ly Saturday, the two-minutes silence being observed at eleven o'clock—the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.Although we still are suffering from the wounds of the last conflict, we find ourselves this Remembrance Day engaged in greater war, so that our services on Saturday ‘and Sunday will be doubly significant.war, even more than the last, is a war for the survival of everything free people hod most dear.Liberty has been challenged throughout the world by men who are probably the most absolute despots of the past thousand years.Only in France, the British Empire, a handful of lesser European countries, and the United States does freedom still ring.War is a hateful thing—a recourse to which civilized men are driven only as a last resort.France and Britain postponed recourse to it until ali means of avoiding the issue were exhausted. But when it had finally to be faced, they took up the challenge. And it is to Canada’s everlasting glory that we ranged ourselves at their side, without hesitation in the great crusade, above all, that freedom still lives where the flag of Britain flies, and God granting we win this war, this freedom will be passed on to our children and our children’s children, A HEALTHY SIGN One of the healthiest results of the recent Provincial election campalgn was the manner in which the voters forsook party allegiance to vote ‘‘for the man’’ or for the pirnciple involved.Years ago Sir Wilfrid Laurier condemned the habit of party voting to the exclus- lon of all other considerations retard national development.Sir Wilfrid was not complaining from the opposition benches at the time—it was during his long tenure of roffice that he made his famous speech on the .subject; consequently, he spoke with absolute sincerity.Condemnation of the party vote, however, .was not condemnation of the for Sir Wilfrid was a strong party man.He believed, as most thinking people do today, that the British two-party parliamentary system of government Is the best the world has evolved; but its benefits along this week and notified them they mustn’t work overtime unless they are paid double the hourly rate. Thus, for a nine-hour day, say, on this wartime rush job, the John L.Lewis emissaries insist on payment of $12.50.These figures may represent an honest wage, provided the work is efficiently done. But, in comparison to the $1.30 a day paid the boys in khaki, doesn't the C.1.0.’s issues and on the auality of the candidates. This anplied even in those divisions where Natisnal Union men were elected — men like Hon, Johnny Bourque and Hon, Mr.Sauve won because their personal popularity and integrity overba'anced the unpopularity of the issues their party snonsored. In other constituencies, like Notre Dame de Grace and Westmount, the voters found both the issue and the candidate under a party banner which they tradi- tiona'ly have opposed, yet they did not hesitate to change their al'egiance when they considered it right that they should do so.This is a healthy and encouraging tendency. The voters should not be party followers. They are the ultimate judges of all politicians, statesmen, and other public men, and they should cast their ballot with the same impartiality that a judge renders a verdict after hearing all the evidence. If they would develop the habit of doing that consistently and conscientiously, public life would be lifted to a German
