moving along toward prorogation and still nothing in the way of legislation affecting Protestant education has been presented for the approval of the legislators, in spite of the fact that the Protestant community in Quebec is well nigh unanimous that something should be done — that it is imperative that something be done — to implement the recommendations of the Hepburn survey. The Prime Minister has stated that he will act upon the recommendations placed before him providing such recommendations represent a reasonably united front on the part of the Protestants of Quebec. It is quite evident, indeed, that the overwhelming majority of Protestants in Quebec are in sympathy with the recommendations of the Survey, and thus present a front near enough to unanimity to have something accomplished providing the legislation is presented. At the meeting at the Windsor Hotel last Saturday, held under the auspices of the Protestant Men Teachers, and addressed by Bishop Carrington, over twelve hundred people applauded a demand that something be done to put into effect the reorganization suggested by the Survey committee. There is nothing to be gained by delay.Eventually, the wishes of the great mass of the people concerned will be respected. In the meantime, much valuable time is being lost.THE FIFTH HORSEMAN In the Vision of Saint John the Divine, which he set down in the Book of Reve'ations, the inspired writer saw four horsemen. They were War, Famine, Pestilence and Death, the four great enemies of humankind. To those Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse former President Hoover of the United States, added a fifth in a speech a short time ago.He referred to “intolerant ideologies’ as being as great a menace to the peop'e of the world as were those whom Saint John saw in his vision.€ Mr.Hoover was, of course, referring to the nationalistic spirit of the present-day dictatorships, and the insidious growth of their intolerant spirit throughout the world. Not since pestilence, in the form of the plague which we call influenza, came out of Manchuria in 1918 and swept the whole world at a cost of 25 million lives, has there been such an insidious and menacing enemy turned loose in the world.People can fight a foe whom they can see; nations can guard themselves against physical threats to their safety. But it is immensely more difficult to protect ideals, beliefs and principles against the onslaught of ideas. There is always the danger, especially in times of economic distress, that great numbers of people will be deceived into believing that the new idea is better than the old one, and that somehow they will fare better by discarding the ancient beliefs in such things as freedom of thought, the rights of individuals as superior to those of the state, the privilege of religious liberty, the right to speak and preach one’s opinions. It is against the insidious approach of the “intolerant ideologies’ of the dictatorships which now control so much of the civilized world that we need to be on our guard, far more alertly than against the weapons of physical warfare.— Essex Splendid Entertainment A season's endeavours for the Betty Speirs’ School of Dancing will come to a close with the annual recital at Victoria hall on Saturday evening, April 1st.The final rehearsals are in full swing and we have Peter Miller's word for it that this will be the ‘show of shows.’ For the kiddies, Mr.Miller has adapted ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears,’ and has chosen for his principals Nancy Telfer as Goldilocks, Enid (Chickabidee) Pascoe as Mamma Bear, Alaister Mont as Papa Bear and Deltry (Eleahëi Powell) Beacom as the baby bear. The scenic effects for this fairy tale include a gaily colored book, almost the height of the stage, from which the various characters will appear as the pages turn.Mr, Miller hopes that the book will survive the enthusiastic rehearsals and be on hand for the actual performance. The kindergarten class of this year is, according to Miss Speirs, the essence of culeness.Joan McCormick, Mary Entwistle, Rayette Schacter, Lysand Coupal, Mariett Durand and Margaret Creagan will be the soloists in this group. In the intermediate part of the program the popular young ensemble of the Ogilvie sisters, the Fitzgerald sisters, Valerie Bea- com, Audrey Jones, Laura Ross and Ruth Gogo will take the spotlight, while in the senior group ‘Ballet du Lys Blanc,” the technique of the talented Jean Barnes, Joyce Lozinski, Barbara Nuttall.Joan Melvin, Isobel Ann Ruben- stein, Isobel McLellan, Peggy Jean Ross, Mary Ledoux, Doris Jackson, Gene Dufty and Dorothy Fitzgerald will be seen to advantage.Wylma Jacobs, well known young N.D.G.elocutionist will be heard in recitations.Miss Jacobs, who distinguished herself with honors at the recent Festival, has also won for herself a free tmp to Toronto as the result of her recent efforts in the competitive field.’ In the selected offerings such eminent stars as Eleanor Thompson, Joan Layton, Shirley Hutt, Jean Miller, Peggy Cooper, Heather Williamson, Joan Regele, Nancy Gogo, Margaret Turnbull, Janie Allan, June Sidaway, and Violet Finnick will display their talents.Boy's As Mounties The boys’ class will be in their element as stalwart members of the Royal North West Mounted Police, and will appear with their girl friend ‘Rose Marie’ Beacom, and when you see this number you will understand why Peter Miller raves about these little fellows. As is customary in a Belty Speirs’ show, no expense has been spared in supplying spectacular scenery and lighting effects to support the efforts of the young artistes, which may be one of the many reasons that this annual entertainment has such a huge following.Glamour-Lack Wins Girl Big Role In Film In Hollywood, where the “glamour standard” Branch: 4841 Sherbrooke W.fat Victoria) DE.9899 Qreonhouses: 2175 Belgrave Ave.EL.9595 THERE ARE MANY articles with which every housekeeper is familiar that can be made useful in many ways, and some that can lighten labor.None can be better used for so many purposes, With great success and entire safety than ammonia. Most housekeepers think of it only to be used in “smelling bottles” as our grandmothers used to call them, We have gathered together a few helpful pointers on the use of this important time and energy ‘saver. These hints should prove very helpful, particularly at this time of the year, when residents are moving or spring cleaning.SPOTS ON LINEN TOWELS and hosiery will disappear with little trouble.A small amount “of ammonia is put into enough water to soak the articles, and they are left in it for an hour or two, before washing. No articles in kitchen use are so likely to be abused as the dish-towels and dishcloths, in washing these ammonia is the greatest help of all, if properly used.Put a teaspoon into the water the towels and cloths are, or should be, washed every day, rub soap on them, then put in water and let them stand for half an hour, then run them out thoroughly.Care should be taken in the rinsing, dry out of doors, if possible, Dish towels need not be gray and dingy looking, iif this method is followed.FOR CLEANING JEWELRY there is nothing better than ammonia and water. If very dull and dirty, rub a little soap on & soft brush.Brush articles in water to which a little ammonia has been added, rinse in cold water, dry first in a silk handkerchief and then rub with a chamois skin.Their brilliancy cannot be surpassed, when cleaned in this manner, by most cleaning polishes and pastes.; WINDOWS AND MIRRORS will shine beautifully if ammonia ir added to the washing water.Drinking glass may also be washed in water to which ammonia has been added. In rinsing the glasses, use warm water.Blanch Ann DRESSMAKING STUDIO INTERESTED IN studded program of the Winter Club carnival to assist the Children’s Memorial hospital at the Forum on March 31 and April 1, under the distinguished patronage of the Governor-General of Canada and The Lady Tweedsmuir.Six major championships are already to her credit and she is only eighteen years of age.Her first came at the age of eleven, her last a year ago when she won the world’s amateur skating championship and repeated the victory the last time out.She started skating at the age of four and a half when, in despair, after doctors had assured her father she could not live for six months, he took her to Switzerland. There, he kept her out in pair of skis as her constant com panions. Her father, a well known skating instructor, who was born in ‘ Saskatoon, kept her in Switzerland for months where she soon showed such aptitude for skating that by the age of seven she had won a bronze medal. At eight ghe won her silver, and at ten her gold medal.A year later, she was British Women’s Champion and held the title for three years in succession while, at seventeen, she achieved her desire when she won the world's championship, and again the following year, so her record is perhaps one of the outstanding.in skating circles, in the whole world.Miss Taylor appeared at the carnival in Toronto in the early part of the month and her exhibition won thunderous applause the open air with a small pair of skates, a baby toboggan and a from audiences of over 14,000 every night for five nights.First-Year Men Form Powerful Team In N.H.L.This has been such a great season for new talent in the National‘ Hockey League, that a very powerful team of first-year players could be assembled. In fact, for perhaps the first time in National League history, one team alone could produce a powerful complete team of first-season players which would make it difficult for any other assembled team, The club is the League-leading Boston Bruins, They could trot out seven star first-year men in Goalie Frank Brimsek; defence- men Jack Crawford and Jack Shewchuk; and forwards Roy Conacher, Mel Hill, Terry Reardon and Red Hamill. If this isn’t considered strong enough, the first-year men could produce an extra goaler in Claude Bourque, of Montreal Canadiens, who has to his credit a shut-out win over Bostin Bruins.New York American could contribute hard-hitting Wilfie Field to the defence and Jack Adams of the Detroit Red Wings could loan Jack stewart for the same sector. For the forward section, Detroit’ could contribute a high-scoring first-year forward, Gus brecht, who like Roy Conacher of Bruins has had a triple in his first season in the major league.Canadiens could send along dashing little Bill Summerhill, a right wing who got into action only in Giese- | didn’t see regular League service in that year. From the Rangers might be drafted hard shooting George Allen, a rookie who broke in with a two-goal crash, All these combine into a “young blood” team with defensive power, and scoring punch that” would worry any array of more seasoned talent, FLYING STIMULATES TRAVBL “They want to go practice is a great asset to the sport in the Lauren- tian area.Any village in the Laurentians may enter a team of Junior skiers by registering the large names, weights and ages with Mr.L.Fuller, the Sec.-Treas.of the League, at Morin Heights. The trophy is a handsome sijver cup presented to the League by Carling Breweries Limited of Montreal and is to be defended by the winners each winter. It is known as the Red Cap Ale Ski Trophy and will remain in possession of the St.Sauveur Team until some time in March, 1940, when the budding young ski champs will again roll down the snow-covered slopes of some well-known 8ki- trail to settle its ownership for the ensuing year.Chicago Has Over 500 Man-Made Skating Rinks Although right mow most of them are covered with from 12 to 24 inches of thick, wet snow, the kind that encourages indoor sports, there are more than 550 man-made, outside, ice skating rinks in the City of Chicago. And when that white blanket is shoveled off, or runs away.they will be swarming again with shouting youngsters.Lake Michigan, while fine for summer sports, helps none at all in the winter, and Chicagoans, lacking also natural hills, have to make their own cold-weather recreation facilities. The Chicago Recreation Commission has just listed the playgrounds, school yards and vacant lots that have been flooded for skat'ng.It’s an inspiration to those who urge that ample opportunity for clean out-of-doors play will go far to relieve the juvenile delinquency situation.Everybody seems to have a part in the activity, ward aldermen, the Chicago Park District, churches, the Board of Education, Bureau bf Parks, civic clubs, and even individuals.Harvard-Yale Polo This year's Harvard-Yale polo | game, to decide the indoor ho-se- hockey rivalry of these two eastern teams, will probably be en- joyedfmore by Chicagoans than anyone else, The game, believe it or not, is to be played right in Chicago, and not at Cambridge, Boston, or New Haven. It's the first time tradition has been broken to allow this contest in the middle west It was all arranged chiefly as a result of the efforts of Col.C.C.Haffner, Jr, Commander of the 12th Field Artillery, who is a Yale alumnus. The tilt will take place in the regiment’s armory.Yale won the 1938 indoor title and Harvard the outdoor crown, both being finalists in both tournaments.Horton Picks Them When veteran golfer Horton Smith looked around to see who had tied him for second place in the annual Bing Crosby Tournament at Del Mar, Calif, recently, he saw Byron Nelson of Fort Worth, Texas.Next in the final line-up was Jimmy McHale of Los Angeles.Horton, who registers from the Oak Park (Ill) Country Club, beamed proudly, for he remembered that a few years ago at Oak Park he predicted that three youngsters in the game ought to be watched. They were Byron Nelson, Jimmy McHale—and Earnest Harrison, from Arkansas. But where was Harrison?Smith nearly burst, it was said, when he looked over the winner of the $500 first prize. It was “Dutch” Harrison himself.Harrison, Nelson, McHale, just like that! Horton can pick as well as play.Hard sledding in the figurative sense, and a lot of literally hard skating brought husky George Shimek his place on the eight- man Olympic team, after winning the 10,000 meter race at.the trials at Oconomowoc, Wis., last week. The young Iowan, the chief supporter of a large family, did his job in that field while polishing up his skating form.Enthusiastic Iowa backers see him as not only a family breadwinner but a point winner for the U.S.over in St.Moritz in 1940.Let's see—470 teams, and six on a team, that's 2,820.And they are all girls. It's the Iowa Girls’ Basketball Tournament now about to get underway in preparation for the finals at the Drake Field- house, in March.Until this year the doings started out with 32 sectional play-offs.Now there are 64 of them. The game is fast being recognized as a fit one for girls.Increase Pro Schedule Success of the night games played last season may lead the professional football league to expand the league schedule beyond the 11 games now allowed, The pro bigwigs will draft the 1989 schedule and talk over rule changes, few of which are exe pected, at least of major importance.Who, a few years ago, would have paid much attention to what the professionals did in the way of rules and schedules? They're not to be overlooked now though. The trend in professional ball, in the rules regarding speed of play and such things especially, is bound to have a big influence in collegiate football, Mere Male Would Take T.C.A.Stewardess Job A mere male came into the Trans-Canada Air Lines office in Conacher Hailed As Best When Roy Conacher, one of the several sensational rookie stars Boston Bruins have brought into the National Hockey League this season, scored a triple at New York against Rangers on February 10, he won rating with one expert observer as being possibly the best, in one respect, of all three Con- achers who have starred in the National Hockey League, Frankie Boucher, former great Ranger centre on the famous Cooks-Boucher line, was the critic. He was intrigued with the fashion in which Conacher twice feinted Dave Kerr out of position to backhand some his shot, then crossed up the Ranger goaler for the third by driving from, fifteen feet out.Said Boucher: “It was the height of cleverness, for Kerr would surely have blocked a third shot of the same type, and Conacher could have tried it, hut was too smart.I don't think the kid's shot is as heavy or as hard to stop as Charley Conacher’s war, but he is better than Charley ever was at feinting a goalie
