[" Canadian Gleaner HUNTINGDON, Q., SEPT.29, 1898 Hotes on the Nows of the Week. The feeling with regard to the vote which is boing polled while this leave of the Gleaner ls being printed, has grown more Intense during the week and both sides are doing their best. The efforts of the liquor deslers are concentrated on Quebec, théir expocta- tion being that if it glves them & majority no prohibitory law could be enacted. To induce the habitant to vote they have circulated vast quantities of fly-shoets declaring prohibition means direct taxation, and that if the habitant does not want to pay two dollars for each member of his family, from the baby upward, he must vote for the continuance of the liquor traffic. At many church doors on sunday lawyers spoke against prohibition. We regret to say Sir Henri Joly addressed the people of deLotbiniere, after mass, in the same strain. The returns tonight will show how the habitants have responded to the spur applied to them at the last moment. The Impression prevails among those who know then best, that the majority will not go to the polls, We shall see.It 1s conceded that the English speaking sections of the province will give a large majority for prohibition. The cutting of railroad rates across the continent, which began last February, ended on Saturday, a truce have ing been made between the C.1°, 11 and its U.5.There is still some cutting between the C.P.R.and the Grand Trunk, but that too will soon be ended by amutual agreement. It will be a pity if the rates that prevailed before the strife began are re- rivals.established, for they were too high.A benefit of tho railway war has been to show companies that high vates keep many at home who have no urgent cause for travelling, but who move about freely when rates ave low.The change will force many youny men who left for the Pacific coast to remain there, 1f the stream of returning Klondikers ave compelled to take up land in British Columbia it will be an advantage. All the reports from Dawson City are of a discouraging nature.Typhoid fever prevails to an alarming extent and the country swarms with men who cannot get work.Ayprehendingtrouble when the pinch of winter comes the authorities are going to increase the force of military at Dawson City. The court of appeals for Ontario bas decided the questions put to them regarding whether constables at elce- tions have votes. The decision was that they have. The decision is in confornity with usage and the Domin- jon law, and shows the needlessnese of the retroactive legislation passed at the recent special session.Hardy now holds securely his small majority, with a good prospect of his two defeated ministers, Dryden and Gibson, obtaining scats. The joint commission hold daily sittings at Quebee and ingenious reporters make guesses at what they are doing.Itis expected the commission will adjourn next week to meet later on at ‘Washington.A cyclone struck St Catharines on Monday, crossed the Niagara district, and spent its force in New York state. The track of the cloud was pro viden- tially narrow so that the damage done ls confined to a thread-like strip.Everything in its track was levelled, and at least 3 lives were lost on the Canadian side, with a number injured. The upward tendency which has been noted in the produce market duringthe past three woeks has increased aud all lines are now held at advanced prices, The increase in coarse grains is small, but in dairy products it is marked. The improved tone of the market is not due to speculation but to & better demand in Britain. The joint U.8.and Spanish commission to arrange the final terms of peace is now in sossion at Paris. The only detail likely to cause a deadlock fs the disposal of the Phillipine islands, the Spaniards contending that as Manilla was not captured until after the protocol was signed, the Americans have no claim.Great complaint le made of the slowness of the Spaniards in Cuba and Porto Rico in completing their arrangements to leave.Just now Cubs is without a government, the Americans being unable to get control until the Spanish have left, with tho result of much disorder caused by the insurgents. The Republican N.Y.state conven: tion has lod the way in adopting & 1 Theodore Roosevelt, claim lu that he commaaded the Rough Riders in Cuba.clared for ths annexation of Porto which involve a large standing army and & complete change of American policy with regard to the outside world.alike ia France and Crete.mer the Dreyfus matter has reached an acute stage, the government having decided to submit all thodocuments to the civil courts for revision. There Is a doubt as to whether the president supporter of the army.If he does not, there will be a constitutional crisls.strength of forged documents. The excuse given Is, that while there was moral proof that Dreyfus was à spy in the pay of the Germans, there was no legal proof, and so in order Lo con- viet him, documents wero forged. In this seandalous work the highest offl- cers in the army connived and the revelations made show anentire abseuce of honor among V resort to n coup d'etat to prevent further exposure.Matters in Crete have reached a critical point.ance by the Turk, France, Russia, Italy, and Britain have united ina demand Sultan to withdraw every one of his soldiers from the island, and leave its government to the If he will not do so willingly a combined fleet on the supervision of the Powers.will eompelhim.Germany and Austrin declined to join in the demand. What time is given the Sultan to answer is not stated, Meanwhile Britain has taken possession of thetown of Candia, and is trying the ringleaders in the recent massacres.Altho' not stated officially, it is bes lieved in London that the expedition sent by Kitehener to take possession of Fashoda, did find it held by & handful of French officers, led by Major Marchand, who asserted it belonged to France. His party, being insigni- fleant in numbers, he could make no resistance, and thetown is now occupied by a British force.Tt is not supposed France will back up the pretensions of Marchand, and will say his expedition was one of discovery and scientifle ve- search.Kitchener's victory over the Dervishes proves to be complete und the Soudan. The reports of what is happening in China are contradictory. One morn: ing despatches asserted the Emperor bad been set aside, and his mother was reigning, the change being caused by the party in favor of Russia. Now it is alleged the cmperor was assassinated and that instead of the new rulers favoring Russia, they look to Britain for aid, That there are grave changes going on at l’ekin is admitted.Whether they will result in a peaceful revolution, hich will ensure a stronger government, or whether they are indications of the dismemberment of the empire, time will tell.ORMSTOWN A union meeting of Mcthodists, Episcopalians, and Presbyterians near- Iy filled the church of the last named body on Sunday evening.when the Rev.It.P, Mackay of Toronto delivered a most impressive and ron- vineing discourse on the subject of prohibition. This closes the series of meetings held in this vicinity. The balance of the time will be devoted to canvassing, and making arrangements for the 20th, Literature adverse to prohibition was distributed at the door of the Iloman Catholic church on Sunday by one of the hotelkeepers.Father Ques- nel told his people to vote as conscience dictated.HOWICK The G.T.company are laying a switch to accommodate Mr Lefevro's grain and lumber yard. This switch is just opposite one on the opposite side of the main track, which was laid for the convenience of Mr Kevr's big storchouse.‘The latter has not been used for many years. The Ottawa fair usually attracts & large crowd from this section, but the number attending this fall's exhibition was larger than ever, over three hundred tickets having been sold at the Canada Atlantic station.Tt is reported that Dr.Demers.a brother-in-law of the deposed registrar, has lost the position of coroner, Dv Laberge of Ste Philomene being appointed.French literature was spite of bad roads farmers are hauling grain to the cars.We have three buyers in opposition, and they ave paying dle per 4uih for oats, and for boiling peas one cent a pound.Messrs Laberge & Co.have already shipped #1 cars of grain this fall, which is more than what they did during all of last year.A meeting of the directors of the agricultural society of Chateauguay will take place on Monday afternoon. The roads having been badly spoil ed by the rain of the last few days, farmers have turned to field work and VALLEYFIELD Major Tond of Montreal gave a clever address on the prohibition issue Wednesday evening, 21st, in the Presbyterian chureh.Mis remarks were clear and convincing. The attendance of voters was small.Sunday evening à joint meeting of the Protestant congregations was held, when stirring addresses were delivered by Rev.Messrs Beattie, Duclos, and Hodgson, all of whom exhorted their hearers to vote aright, A large number took advantage of the low fares to visit the Ottawa exhibition. On Wednesday about one hundred tickets were
