always amazes me how much talent — especially musical talent — exists in this Valley,” said instrument-maker Wolfgang Kater as he dusted off a brand-new harpsichord in his Rockburn workshop. As a demonstration of that, and also to raise money for the Music Department at Chateauguay Valley Regional High School where he teaches part-time, Kater is organizing what he calls a Musical Buffet, an eclectic gathering of many local musicians for a benefit concert on Friday evening, Oct.13 at the school. All the performers have solid reputations in music ranging from popular favorites to folk to classical.Soloists will include sopranos Lynn Harper and Diane Morrison (The Cleaning Lady).while the Avalon Singers will show their versatility with numbers ranging from a Stan Rogers folk song to their trademark madrigals.Speaking of Stan Rogers, his “Mary Ellen Carter” with its rousing “Rise again” refrain also serves to illustrate the arrival on the CVR stage of a unique musical instrument which has languished in Kater's shop for a couple of decades since its 1980 debut at a music festival in Belgium.Giant harpsichord “La Baleine” (the whale) as it is known.is the longest string keyboard instrument ever built, and represents Kater's response to the challenge of including a 16-foot stop (with 16-foot strings) on its lower manual.“This three-manual Flemish harpsichord is 0.5 metres long, so its not something you can move around easily,” Kater said."But we're going to take it up to CVR along with a brand-new Italian harpsichord to be played by its owner, professional organist and harpsichordist Sarah Fraser.whose parents live in Rockburn.” This new instrument is a story in itself. The wood used in its construction is near- Iv all from local sources, with its keyboard of Franklin apple wood and its soundboard made of 120-ycar-old Adirondack red spruce, a tree which disappeared from this area during World War II.“It turned out the Fraser family had stored some old floor-boards from a house demolished in Ormstown, and underneath all the din, we found they were red spruce.” Kater ex-explained.Fraser, who lives and teaches in Montreal, was actively involved in building the instrument during the past summer, and it will be ready just in time for her to play at the concert. Her program will include 16th and 17th century pieces in both the Flemish and Italian style, by such composers as Louis Couperin, Frescobaldi and Fischer.Unique guitar To stress the CVR connection, Music Department head Sandra Cantu will also play in a four-handed piano version of Malaguena, while Kater himself, as well as supplying the harpsichords, will play an LT www.agrocentrebelcan.com Agrocentre who are old enough to have some basis of comparison between the Trudeau era and the tenure of other Canadian governments cannot help but recall those years as seminal in a new and healthy self-image for Canadians.Recent years have seen us stumble a bit as we face the all-devouring American “culture” foisted on us by free trade and other economic realities, but if somewhere, way down inside, we can contact the “true north strong and free” inside ourselves, it is there at least in part because of Pierre Trudeau.Fraught with turmoil and debate as they were, the 1970s were a great time to be young, and to be represented by a man who combined style and substance as few, we eR = TRUDEAU LOOMS LARGE if any, others have done in Ottawa.Like the Chinese yin-yang symbol which has become familiar to westerners in recent years, Trudeau blended the two founding peoples in -his person, while retaining elements of contradiction and mystery in his way of being.Seemingly arrogant and yet curiously humble, an international traveller who felt most at home in the Canadian wilderness, possessor of an exotic public persona and yet a devoted family man, he is now a part of our history, and we feel time will give him a far greater importance than he has been allotted over the past couple of decades. If nothing else, the public response to his death should ensure that. We'll miss you, Pierre Trudeau.(GT) FROM GLEANER ARCHIVES .120 years ago September 30, 1880 TRAGIC DEATH On the 9th instant, Dr.D.C.MacLaren of Franklin left for Clinton, Missouri to be married to Hannah
