IGA Huntingdon - Town Hall} Ps Jelly of ; \u2019 - a office \u2018 makesia peak , we.a) hey % 957: = gg aS A .R w J =, - - ~~ wirtpallly of Hemmingtord > ae 150 ÿears, ?but who \u201c\u20ac CHANTAL HORTOP Chantal.hortop@quebecormedia.com 2013 has been a year-long celebration at the Gleaner but as the first edition of the pewspaper rolled off the presses on September 18, 1863, today's issue is a particularly special one.150 years ago, nearly to the day, residents of the area around Huntingdon read the first instalment of the publication that would become a cornerstone of the Chateauguay Valley.The early years of the Gleaner proved difficult, as the founding editor, Robert Sellar contended with not only the ongoing challenges of running a newspaper, but also more dramatc happenings, such as the fire in 1870 that wiped out virtually the entire Gleaner office.Each time it seemed that the newspaper might fail, though, the community rallied behind Sellar and pressed hum to carry on.That kind of community spint has not changed to this dav but apart from that, the newspaper's long history has brought about changes in nearly every aspect of its production.In the early days, Sellar would first prepare a printing plate one lead letter at a time, and then do the actual printing himself on a Washington hand press, which required a great deal of strength and stamina.As Robert Hill noted in his history, The Voice of the +, , four pages of the Cleaner * dred subscribers, a total of two thousand : 4 mplete the r five hun- Vanishing Minority, \u201d frankings, inkings and heaves at the {tightly sprung press bar] was required.\u2018By God, Sellar exclaimed in his diary, \u2018the work is too hard.\u201d The publication of the newspaper today 1s quite different from that manual labour.It moved on through cut- ting and pasting, developments in photography and electric typewriters.With the appearance of personal computers in the 1980s, everything would change, moving toward the way the Gleaner is produced today - with computers playing a role in every part its publication from head to tail.Although reams could be written on Cand all that has changed, the Gleaner, would never have survived without some of the great things about it staying the same.It seems clear that over the past cegtury and a half not only the community but also the newspaper's staff have driven it forward with their passion for and dedication to community journalism.As current general manager Sheri Graham said, \"the longevity of the Gleaner is due greatly to the dedication of [its] employees \u2026 not just the current team, but the hundreds of past employees.\u201d A good number of those past employees were present at the kick-off of the 150\" anniversary celebrations this past May in Huntingdon.An exhibition of artifacts, archives and photos were on display at the event, which also marked the launch of the newspaper s souvenir album.Its pages are filled with a remarkable assortment of history ads and photographs dating back to 1863, and words of support for the Gleaner from local businesses.That same support was palpable at the celebration in the Salle Alfred- Langevin, as former staffers and longtime readers came together to toast the publication, the people behind it, and the beautiful Chateauguay Valley.As was overheard more than once at the event, \"here's to 150 more years.\u201d dinator.PHOTO GLEANER ARCHIVES 2 The Gleaner -
