COTE ) Calling for a realistic approach to the proposed hike path The MRC is pushing through with a bike path that most citizens do not want.The more information | receive from the MRC and the costs associated with it, makes me wonder why is this still being considered?Businesses do not invest without knowing the return.When at the MRC meeting David Bryson asked to have a Question Period first on the bike path before a vote for the loan on the bike path would be done we were told \u201c| guess we could as it will not make any difference anyway.\u201d Has this all been passed through to go ahead with the bike path?Is this democracy?Businesses do not stay in business without good communication skills.We heard reasons from the MRC that if we do not take the grant for the bike path some other municipality would receive it.Does this mean we have to build a bike path to get a grant?Businesses pass up many grants if they are not reasonable.As | listened to arguments concerning the bike path pros and cons, too many obvious cons were apparent.The fact is that: a majority of people that come to the area and those in the area will not use the rail bed for their biking; they bring too little money to the area; they prefer back roads, up and down, hills and bends; they want asphalt to ride on; they choose the roads and direction where they want to go.We are not against the cyclists but would like to find a compromise for everyone involved.We were told it would bring doctors and people to our towns.New and old businesses would be more established because of tourists.Biking is an economic getaway.Spending money is their last priority.People who bike always want to see something different and new.Not cornfield after cornfield and a soybean field thrown in with a few tree areas here and there.They want to see how others live and not be isolated in back fields.Why not expand on what the bikers are already doing.Widen the already existing North River road from Sainte- Martine to Ormstown that winds through.up and down and across ditches and rivers.The new bridge at the intersection of the 138 and 10th has ample room for parking and at the Allens Corners historical site, which is already used by many cyclists.Take the two million dollars proposed for a bike path overpass at Highway 138/Rrysonville and bridges at the English River and Norton Creek (Phase 3) and construct full facilities such as washrooms and picnic areas at these parking areas for all visitors, not just cyclists.Too much money is being invested into one group of people and then the majority of that group will still be using the back roads and highways instead of the multimillion-dollar bike path.Is this how you want your tax dollars spent?We need to speak up and tell our councillors and Government of Québec has indeed listened to its Bureau of Environmental Assessment (BAPE) and had just rejected a wind power station TransAlta planned to impose on the population of Saint-Valentin, in southern Quebec.More than 200 persons have written to BAPE to express their opposition to the TransAlta project in Saint-Valentin last March during the public consultation.They have been heard, BAPE published a very unfavourable report against TransAlta and the government has just put the brakes on the whole project.Notwithstanding this universal rejection, TransAlta seems intent on imposing its station on our community.According to its press release, the company is trying to modify its project to make it seem more palatable.It goes on like this, even though 58% of the citizens in Saint-Valentin have signed a petition asking Trans-Alta to seek other pastures.A coalition of seven (7) mayors from surrounding villages has clearly stated that they do not want windmills in their community.Seventy (70) city councils from all over Quebec province have sent resolutions requiring the withdrawal of the project.Even the mayor of St-Valentin Pierre Chamberland, formerly in favour of the project declared after the government decision \u201c.the social acceptability is not there.| believe that whatever modifications TransAlta Animals and cars in the summer don\u2019t mix Last Friday as | was shopping in Valleyfield | noticed a dog left in a car in the parking lot at Walmart.It was a very hot day and the dog seemed stressed even though two of the windows were open.It went from sitting up looking out the windows to crouching on the seat to disappearing, presumably on the floor looking for a cooler spot.| went into the store and asked them to announce the license number so the owner could be alerted.They refused to do so saying they didn't want to upset the customer.Luckily on my way back to my car, | noticed the vehicle had left but there was no way of telling how pets are left to endure the effects of the sun beating down on the vehicle with little air circulation to offer comfort.People inside the stores are quite comfortable in air conditioning while their pets are under a great deal of stress.Even the slightest amount of time can cause undue discomfort for a pet.Just imagine sitting in a fur coat in a car with little air flow in the blazing sun on hot of money with 1000 giant wind turbines in Canada.Its listing at NY Stock Exchange is showing a high of 22$ close to its highest 22.60% of the past 52 weeks.It does not need Saint-Valentin, so our message to the TransAlta Administrators is please withdraw now and stop upsetting people where you are rejected.Shareholders need to know what is going on with this company.TransAlta have lost its SEPTEMBER 26, 2011 jEditorial ) Opportunities abound for young local artists In Quebec, there is a tendency to nurture the arts, and opportunities for young artists are in no short supply in the province.Take for example the recently issued call for applicants for the second round of the Detour-Retour program run through the TRACE Project.This is a program designed specifically to highlight the work of six regional artists, all under the age of 35.In identifying emerging artists, and providing them with an enriched and highly educational experience, the Detour-Retour series does more than just nurture an artist, it feeds a need in the area to find innovative ways of retaining those engaged in the arts.In the Valley we are extremely fortunate in that there is ample evidence of a thriving arts community.The Réseau Culturel de la Vallée du Haut-Saint-Laurent, a new arts and culture network having recently begun to make waves is one example, as is the two-day artists\u2019 Studio Tour that took place last weekend in Hemmingford and the upcoming Culture Days.The Cultural Committee at the Haut-Saint-Laurent is very involved in providing opportunities for artists to engage with the community.Another aspect of the local arts support network is the attempts being made to reach out to all citizens through bilingual communications.The efforts being made in the Valley to reach out to future generations of artists now is crucial for building an awareness that there is a place for them in small rural communities.This is something they will take with them as they go off into the city for education and to expand their horizons, however these roots are also something that may one day pull them back.It is for this reason that arts based community development should be a key factor in government planning, at all levels.The long term sustainability of the arts in more rural communities depends on maintaining an interest within the general public for local culture, history and heritage.It also depends on leadership, government commitment and frankly some investment.Finally it will need to involve innovative initiatives, such as that Detour- Retour series.The Canadian government infamously slashed cultural and arts funding by $45 million with controversial comments emanating out of the Prime Minister's office suggesting regular people don\u2019t care about the arts.The move met with protest across the country, but no more in any other province than in Quebec where the arts are considered an essential component to a healthy culture.While true that in Quebec opportunities for young artists abound.the vast majority of these openings circle through French networks.While not exclusionary, Quebec based programs to fund artists are not exactly reaching out to Anglo or Allophone artists.This is a part of living in a French province, but to what end.It is a huge loss if the roots that tie young artists to the rural regions of Quebec are severed by a Barrie Memorial Hospital.The gifts are usually taken to the respective churches and used as Harvest Decorations and after that taken to the hospitals that are expected to receive the gifts to THE GLEANER SEPTEMBER 26, 2011 IQ OT VX xT = I Spartan Talk ¢ Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Spartan Talk.We've had lots of activity on the sport's fields this week and we are here to tell you about it.The Football team played this past Saturday in Marieville, but unfortunately faced another setback losing with a final score of 40-14.Although playing hard once again, the Spartans were unable to kick- start their offence enough to keep up with their opposition.Touchdowns for the Spartans were run in by Thomas MacDougall and Andrew Stirling.They play their next game on Saturday, September 24th and anyone is welcome to come The TRACE Project with Tasha and Ben down and support the team.Field Hockey is well under way with the first tournament held at CVR on September 21st, both the Midget and Juvenile teams played 2 amazing games each.The first game was played by the Midgets against Centennial, it was a very close game with a great finish and win by the Spartans, a score of 1-0.The only goal scored was made by Anika Schachtler with great team effort.An outstanding game was played by all the girls, especially Shanelle Caza who was always there for her teammates.The next game was played by the Juvenile girl's; they had more of a lead finishing the game with a winning score of 4- 0 versus the Juvenile Centennial girls.The goals scored were made by Michelle Blair, Alisha L'Heureux, and two by Vanessa Petch.All the girls played a big part in winning this game.The second game played by the Midgets was a little more difficult, with a more challenging offender Chambly but as a team they had a strong finish.The final score was I-1.the goal being scored by Sophia Ruhdorfer Lee and again with the great support of her team.Finally the last game was played by the Juvenile team this time against Chambley.They finished with a win and score of 5-0 Making 4 out of the 5 goals in the second half.it was a strong finish.The goals were made by Julianna Krobath, Stephanie Heaton.Michelle Blair again, and two from Victoria Petch.The tournament was a great success for both Juvenile and Midget girl's teams.Juvenile girl's soccer team played their first game of the season at home on the 2 Ist against Baie St-Francois and came out on top with a strong opening performance.The girls led throughout the game as they took the victory by a score of 2-0.They played hard from start to finish and definitely earned their great start to the year.All other Spartans soccer teams will be starting their seasons very soon; we all look forward to a great year on the soccer field.It's been a very eventful week for the Spartans with many more sure to come.Thanks for reading and be sure to check out what happened with the Spartans next week.Second edition of Detour-Retour seeks young area artists After a very successful first round of exhibits featuring the work of six young artists from the Haut-Saint-Laurent Valley last Spring, the TRACE Project (Traquer la Releve Artistique et Culturelle en Emergence de la Vallée-du-Haut-Saint- Laurent) is launching a call for the second edition of Detour-Retour, with the goal of staging a series of exhibits in March 2012.Organizers of the first edition were quite proud of the results.and as a result.the Conférence régionale des Elus (CRE) Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent, the Forum Jeunesse Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent as well as the Ministry of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, have all renewed their interests in the dissemination project for local emerging artists.The goal of the TRACE initiative is to improve the social conditions facing emerging artists while rendering the region a more attractive alternative for emerging artists who may choose to remain in the area.The first edition of Detour-Retour (2011) introduced six emerging artists, as residents of, or natives to, the Haut- Saint-Laurent Valley, to the thriving cultural environment that exists in the region.The experience was rewarding for the first round of participants as it allowed them to connect with the local arts networks while, for some, serving as a springboard to another artistic level.The organizers of Detour-Retour 2012 are now looking to recruit six new artists to expose their work in one of six venues within the Haut-Saint-Laurent Valley.The venues include the Complexe Saint- Laurent in La Prairie, the Maison Trestler in Vaudreuil-Dorion, the Regional Museum of Vaudreuil-Soulanges in Vaudreuil-Dorion, MUSO - the Musée de société de Deux-Rives in Salaberry-de- Valleyfield.the St-Bernard-de-Lacolle Regional Park in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle and the Alfred Langevin Cultural and Community Hall in Huntingdon.In addition to exhibiting in one of six showrooms, those selected will be offered the opportunity to organize their exhibit with the help of curator Chantal Seguin.They will also benefit from a $1,000 professionalization grant and a series of training sessions oriented around equipping young artists with the tools to promote themselves and build a career as an artist.The criteria for eligibility for the second round of Detour-Retour requires that artists applying for the program be between the age of 18 and 35, and must be residents or native to the Haut-Saint- Laurent Valley, which includes the MRCs of Beauharnois-Salaberry, the Haut-Saint- Laurent, the Jardins-de-Napierville, Rousillon, and Vaudreuil-Soulanges, as well as the Akwesasne and Khanawake reserves.Those who applied for the first call for the Detour-Retour project are also welcome to resubmit an application.Applicants must also demonstrate their intention to work professionally in the field of the arts, including painting.sculpture, photographers, designers and multidisciplinary art.All applications must include a letter of intent, artistic discipline, an artist's curriculum vitae, a brief description of their artistic practice as well as examples of their work.All work that is presented in the application must be available to exhibit should the applicant be accepted into the program.The deadline to apply for the 2012 edition of Detour-Retour is October 21.All documents and necessary information is available for download off of the TRACE website at: www.tracevhsl.qc.ca.BIM Classic sarah RENNIE With a strong sun beaming down on all 80 golfers registered to play in the first Brian James Millar Memorial Golf Tournament on September | |, the day on the Ormstown links could not have been any better.And with the memory of Brian never far from participants\u2019 minds they took to the green in force before coming together in the evening for a dinner that was replete with memories as much as it was a reunion for family and friends.whose generosity will now play a role in ensuring a legacy through the Brian Millar Memorial Scholarship.\u201cOur goal was to try and raise around $5,000 and | think we are going to be over $ 10,000,\u201d says lain Millar, adding that the tournament went extremely well thanks in no small part to the support and help they received in organizing the inaugural event from family and friends.Local sponsors were also quick with their support and as a result the tournament featured a roster of prizes, all donated, including a $10,000 promise to anyone who shot a hole in one.Two professional golfers travelled to try their luck on the green in Ormstown, both holding clinics prior to the start of the tournament to even out the field a bit.Luke Saunders plays at the Rivermead Golf Club near Gatineau, while Craig Millar, lain's brother, is the course pro at the Spur Valley Resort in Radium Hot Springs, BC.Another friend flew in from Kenya just to golf a round, and of course stay for dinner.The purpose of the tournament was really two-fold for the Millar family, it was a tournament in memory of their son, who succumbed to cancer less than a year ago, and it was a fundraiser for the CVR Educational Foundation and the memorial Scholarship that bears their son's name, awarded each year to a graduating student continuing their studies in business.\u201cWe are talking about doing it again next year\u201d says Millar, noting that the interest is there but for the moment he is not ready to make any kind of commitment.\u201cHe meant a lot to a lot of people and so do the Millars,\u201d says Maureen Whaba, the Coordinator of the CVR Eduacational Foundation, of Brian and his family.\u201cThey put a lot a little touches into it that made it special,\u201d she says of the tournament.As for the Foundation, she says \u201cwe are incredibly gratified by this.\u201d The Foundation and the graduating students from CVR, Brian's alma mater, will benefit from such a display of generosity on the part of the community for a long time to come.Friends and family turn out in force for fist memorial golf tournament Aly con ERR 2° 4 A = ant 0008 ar Tn it at Eighty golfers, some dressed in full kilt, took to the course at the Ormstown Golf Club on September 11 for the first BJM Classic, a memorial golf tournament to benefit the CVR Educational Foundation.(Photo: S.R.) with the intent to incorporate a non-prof- it organization on culture and literacy within the framework of creating a cultural centre.Municipal officials agreed to renew the leases for municipality-owned industrial rental space currently occupied by Plombco and Phoenix Innovations Technologie.À notice of motion was filed by the municipal council to adopt a bylaw regarding the plowing of alleys and private parking areas by business owners in the municipality.The Municipal authorities gave the green light for the sale of certain buildings whose owners were at fault for not paying municipal taxes.The municipality intends to install a stop sign on Ridge Road at the intersection with Bouchette Street.VILLAGE OF HEMMINGFORD The municipality is in the process of looking into finding a new location for the Hemmingford Historical Archives.The archives are presently kept in a room in the basement of the Town Hall, however the volunteers who work with the archives would appreciate a different location.A complete surface water system was installed in August on parts of Lachapelle and Bouchard Streets.The municipality has been working to install such systems on different sections within the village over time, and have already completed the work on Barr and Goyette Streets.The municipality also replaced the pumps for the sewers in August.The major project essentially upgraded the system so that it works more efficiently.The Council approved of donations to the Operation Nez-Rouge in both the Haut-Richelieu and Saint-Remi-La Prairie.The Council also approved of a decision to put in place a surface water drain on the walkway between Patenaude and Fortin Streets leading to Bouchard Street.There were areas along the walkway that accumulated water, and residents using the path to access Bouchard Street will now be able to do so with drier feet.There was a robbery at the municipal library on August 13.Four computers were stolen, two of which had been purchased by the municipality and the others by volunteers.Scanners were also damaged in the robbery.The municipality will be replacing the equipment.The Village of Hemmingford is in the process of applying for a grant to install a new.permanent and multifunctional skating rink for 2012 to benefit all of Hemmingford.TOWNSHIP OF HEMMINGFORD The municipal council has moved to update a series of bylaws that were out of date.The municipality has also decided to move ahead with the renovation and construction of new offices in the Township.The offices will remain where they are presently accident A woman suffered minor injuries in a collision between a car and a truck on Tuesday morning on Route 20! in Ormstown.Around 10 am, the woman, driving a Hyundai pulled out from the Lac des Pins campground without first checking for traffic.A truck heading north was unable to avoid colliding with the car.The woman, a 59-year-old resident of Mirabel was driven by ambulance to the Hopital du Suroit in Salaberry-de- Valleyfield.The driver of the truck, a 47- year-old citizen of Saint-Zotique.was unharmed.Three injured in collision between car and tractor Three people were injured in a collision between a tractor and a car on Monday evening on Route 138 in Ormstown.Around 7:30 pm.a farmer driving a tractor was crossing the road when he was struck by an oncoming Chevrolet driving archéologique de Saint-Anicet comme étant un bien culturel à part entière.«Le site Droulers a obtenu un telle classification aux niveaux municipal et fédéral mais pas encore du côté provincial», a dans le cadre des Journées de la Culture qui se tiendront du 30 septembre au 2 octobre.Les amateurs de musique de tous les âges viendront de tous les coins de la vallée de la Châteauguay pour participer à l'une ou l'autre des activités interactives qui se tiendront sur le site de la Foire d'Ormstown.Cette année, les organisateurs du festival ont décidé d'emprunter quelque peu une nouvelle direction en élargissant le répertoire musical afin d'inclure une variété d'autres genres musicaux allant du country et western au cajun/zydeco en passant par le gospel.«C'était une question d'amener les gens à venir nous voir», a déclaré Wolfgang Kater, l'un des principaux organisateurs de l'événement, soulignant que cette année, le festival a été conçu avec deux objectifs principaux en bout de
