soon to have its exterior re-done.Last October.it was announced that the church, which was built in 1904.would be one of twenty cultural landmarks in Montérégie to be allotted a part of a $2 415 000 grant from the ministry of culture, communications, and status of women.St.Andrew's will receive $36 400 in funding for its repairs, which will be done on various parts of the building. The total cost of the work is estimated at $52 000, and the church will contribute the $15 600 balance.Reverend Barbara Duguid and Elsa Korvick of the church said that news of the grant had been awaited for several months.“We started to talk about this work three years ago.But we have been working intensively on the dossier since pf February 2010,” they said. The work will begin in April and will be done in three phases.A lightning rod will be the first thing to be installed.“The church has never had one,” said Korvick, adding that it is a requirement from the insurance company.¥ 2 \\ When spring comes, masonry work will begin.fixing up stones which have been damaged. The exterior wood will be entirely repainted.including the window-frames.The work is not expected to be finished this year.“We will need to make another request for financial aid to be able to carry it all on next year.” said Korvick. In 1997.the church went through substantial restoration at a cost of $194 700."A new roof was installed and the masonry and plaster were repaired in the sanctuary. The sanctuary was repainted.” Korvick explained.“The church really needs to have this work done.” said Duguid.“it seems necessary to me to take good care of this building that is a gift for our community.” Women curlers converge don tel.450.829.2367 7 pe = Informing v No .t ! go ahead, locals still fighting Chantal HORTOP After two months of sending letters to Ottawa.on February 8, Franklin mayor Suzanne Yelle-Blair was finally given the chance to meet with the Canadian Border Services Agency to discuss the planned closure of the point of entry at Franklin Centre.Though getting to hold the meeting was a small victory, the news was not all good: Yelle-Blair says that she was told that plans to close the crossing on April 1, 2011 would be going ahead as scheduled. The government announced the closure last summer as part of budget cuts. The mayor says “I haven't given up.” and that she still has a “slight hope” that the matter could be resolved, and is continuing to work for the cause, writing letters and looking at alternatives. She says that plans are already being made for emergency services such as the fire department if the border should close.but noted that there are many complications to be ironed out. There is talk of using the American border services building in Churabusco, New York as a combined border crossing for both Canadian and American services, but the mayor says that even if this happens “in the short term,” it would likely take twelve to fifteen months to get it off the ground, especially since the building in Churabusco was in the middle of an extensive renovation when the news of the closure was announced.Federal deputy for Beauharnois-Salaberry Claude DeBellefeuille has not given up either.“Although the president of the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) recently confirmed that the plan to close the border crossing at Franklin Centre was in motion for April 1, 2011, the Conservative government can still hear our solutions,” such as the cooperation between Churabusco and Franklin Centre, she said in a press release sent out last week, adding that CBSA president Luc Portelance “showed a lot of interest in the solutions we proposed.” “The solutions are more than reasonable and are the consensus,” she said.“We are awaiting nothing less than a positive response, and most of all, for the government to finally decide to act in the best interest of the local population, business owners and regional elected officials.” When contacted earlier this week, DeBellefeuille said that she would be meeting with Bill Owens, congressman for the 23rd district of New York, this week in order to discuss strategies for cooperation between the two countries. She said that while it is “not something that can be done before April 1,” both sides will be “working very hard” to set up a workable collaboration. The deputy added that following the meeting with the congressman, they would I be “better placed to be able to see things from [the American] perspective.” Curling teams from across Québec began arriving in Huntingdon on Monday to take part in the Senior Ladies Provincial Curling journalism in Québec, another bone remains unpicked. The report suggested that in order to practice journalism in the province, people should be required to be “card-carrying” journalists, having met a number of requirements determined by unspecified professional organisations. Some of the concrete suggestions of these requirements mentioned in the report are entirely appropriate, such as asking journalists to take a course on the code of ethics for their field, but the vagueness on who will be determining the final requirements is a bit more nervous-making.This is for the simple reason that the authors of the report do not seem to be in touch with a very complete representation of media professionals in Québec. In order to compile the report, they say they “chose to go ahead in a non-traditional manner: neither doing a consultation nor academic research, but rather a bit of each.We brought together 200 people.” This is all very well, but the uproar caused by the report among many journalists, particularly in the English media, would suggest that the cross- section they chose might not have been entirely balanced. Therefore, it gives us little confidence in those who might be chosen to consult on what credentials professional journalists should have.At the moment, there is no education requirement for those wishing to practice journalism, and some of the most highly-regarded professionals have training in something other than media studies. While some non-graduates of journalism programs who wish to work in the field might go and get the necessary credentials, it is clear that a great number would be excluded due to unwillingness or inability to meet the requirements. This, in fact, goes against what is being taught in the actual journalism courses, where students are told that their media training is all very well, but without a broader knowledge and studies in other areas, finding work will be extremely difficult.Being trained in headline-writing and photo-editing is all very well, but the most in-depth, colourful and interesting news stories often spring from instinct and experiences gained far from the classroom. The sentiment behind the recommendation is good (creating more professional journalists), but we must not close the door on those who might not have spent three years studying news at university, and thus robbing our industry and its readers and viewers of the best news that can be offered.) Consolidation concerns Is no one else alarmed at the sale of our beloved Gleaner/La Source to Québecor Media, now the largest publisher of newspapers in the entire country? Our local paper.so necessary for disseminating local information and providing a forum for local discussion, is now truly no longer a local paper, but has become the toenail on the body of a vast corporate Frankenstein.Consolidation of media into fewer and fewer corporate hands has the effect of stifling public discourse and dissent. If you doubt the truth of this, you need only look to our neighbours to the south to see journalism so thoroughly subjugated to the will of its corporate masters that it dares not bite the hand that feeds it.A free and democratic society needs the ability to voice diverse opinions and a free press in which to voice them. The sale of The Gleaner by Les Hebdos Montérégiens to Québecor Media is another step on the road to a more thorough erosion of our rights as citizens. The monster walks among us.Chantal Hortop Alyson Champ, Saint-Chrysostome Artistic license Last week's issue of The Gleaner contained an article by Patrice Laflamme about some teenage vandals in Huntingdon that had crudely spray-painted several buildings with graffiti.Unfortunately, a (perhaps typographical) error occurred in the English translation - the young miscreants were therein referred to as «artists.” The accompanying photo would suggest otherwise.Presumably the Gleaner regrets this error.Tony King, Elgin Editor’s note The Gleaner does regret that the vandals were referred to as graffiti artists, though the term's use was by no means condoning the crime nor lauding the youths’ artistic abilities.Presumably most readers will forgive us this oversight.THE Fuck HIT A BUMP ON THE ICE OVER MY STICK AND JUMPED OTHE HERITAGE cuissIC JusT UK 120 years ago February 19, 1891 PP AGRICULTURE IN NEWFOUNDLAND It will be a surprise to some to learn that we have in this “land of fog and codfish,” an agricultural society; in fact, | believe there are some five or six such institutions throughout the island. Not only so, but we have recently organised a “board of agriculture,” which receives an annual grant from the legislature. From this fund each agricultural society.when properly constituted.receives “an amount equal to the amount of the subscriptions of the members.” We are beginning to realize that the island is something more than a spot on which codfish can be cured and the nets of fishermen dried, and that the soil if duly cultivated 93.02.From ( JEANER archives } will yield remunerative returns. The difficulty hitherto has been to induce a part of our population to abandon the net and oar and take to the plough and spade.A fishing population is not easily led to abandon the harvest gathering from the sea, for which there is no sowing or toilsome preparation — only the reaping. To the fisherman, with his inherited instincts which lead him to the “salt sea” and its exciting toils, the plodding industry of the farm seems dull and irksome. Then for long periods in days gone by agriculture was prohibited by act of the Imperial parliament in order that the colony be kept as a nursery for the Royal navy. That time has gone ‘past. For the encouragement of agriculture the legislature offered a high premium for the clearing of land. This offer has been largely availed of.and in recent years the cultivation of the soil has made fair progress.60 years ago February 21, 1951 334339999339) HW A SPIDER IN À SMALL TOWN PAPER.(advertisement) Many years ago Mark Twain was the editor of a small-town newspaper.A reader wrote in saying that he had found a spider in his paper.and wanted to know if that was an omen of good or bad luck.Mark Twain answered: “Finding a spider in your newspaper is neither good or bad luck. The spider was merely looking over our paper to see which merchant was not advertising so he could go to that store, spin his web across the door and lead a life of undisturbed peace ever afterward.” COVEY HILL Trying to protect her house plants on a draughty window-sill during a recent severe frost, one of our residents discovered a new virtue in The Gleaner — its open sheet is nearly 3 inches wider than that of a city daily.“And brought him a dream of a bright summer day,/lts birdsong and beauty and bloom.” If you think winter in the country is monotonous, then you'll have time to realise that it is largely caused by the absence of songbirds. The spontaneity.what Robert Browning calls “careless rapture,” of birdsong, has what the radio stars can't compete with. Then there is the absence of sleigh-bells.One fine frosty day this winter, Mr.M—- S——-'s team trotted gaily westward across the corner to the music of their sleigh-bells — a perfectly thrilling sound too rarely herd.Would you compare it with the sound of auto horns?Never! rather than riding being an elite sport, nearly everyone there has horses, and there are a great number of working horses, which is something they “try to include in the show.we work really hard to write a show that is real, entertaining, and with very modern family values.” While in the first season, a number of stories from the books were used, by the second that number had shrunk down to a couple, and Basen says that now, the series has gone “beyond the books.” She says that “a lot of [her] friends are horse people,” and their collective experiences often serve as inspiration for the show, adding that as a horse person herself, “knowing the right words to say in certain situation adds authenticity” to the series. The sheer number of fans of the show certainly confirms Basen’s wry comment that she is the “queen of family drama;” Heartland has nearly 47 000 fans on Facebook alone, and the writer says that the audience is definitely not limited to young girls. It is a “really diverse group.” she says, “teenaged girls, older people, families,” and many others tune in on Sunday evenings for the latest episode.“It's great to work on a show that is successful and that so many people love.that's really rewarding,” the Hemmingford resident says. The job is far from easy; as Basen says, there is “always a pressure to come up with the next thing.” and since there are a lot of people involved in the production process, “the stress come from trying to make something that you are happy with that the production people are happy with.” Also, As a lifetime horse- lover, her j job “writing about the daily fe of a teenaged horse- trainer brings together the work and play aspects of her life. She is pictured here with her horse Memphis.(photo provided) THE GLEANER FEBRUARY 23, 2011 she says it is “actually a very hard show to write.there are a lot of elements,” but “we try really hard to make it good.” The rewards, however.are substantial as well.“I get to write about a world that really interests me,” Basen says.“| can’t ever imagine not having horses,” she says firmly.“the only thing | haven't done is to have horses on my property — that's the future.” So.as Heartland approaches the start of its fifth season, Basen's passion is stretching out before her in both her personal and professional life.series Heartland.(photo provided) Leila Basen, a Hemmingford resident, is part of the creative force behind the popular CBC Re Keep your New Holland machinery in great shape thanks to a certified maintenance Inspection x Triple 15 program : (combine) Triple 10 program: ftractor) (thresher, hay wagon, baler) ¢ -0il change (oil, filters) ” Air filter change r-Diesel filter change *=: 8 oy up hydraulic fluid (1 olant (1G) {68.0 details, at the dealership) at.Hy.“al Rl hd 5% discou i & ‘ 3 reductio EEC hd cal charges In case repairs were needed during an inspection, the parts as well as the bour will be guaranteed by New Holland for 6-months.Contact us without delay to make an appaintment (Limited places) 514.276.BLEU L LaCoop = === Uniforce ~ A 1 nosit position of POWER! + mers wWww.coop-uniforce.com industry leading equipment 1262, boul.St-Jean-Baptiste, 4, rang St-André Ste-Martine Napierville Service Sales: 514.276.BLEU (2538) PAGE 5 -Preventative maintenance , Police blotter ) Two men charged with breaking and entering Two men in their twenties appeared on Thursday morning at the Valleyfield courthouse under charges of breaking and entering, possession of break-in tools, possession of narcotics, and breaking conditions of probation. The suspects were intercepted on Rang du 40 in Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague.Officers from the Beauharnois-Salaberry detachment of the Sûreté du Québec saw a suspicious vehicle parked on the side of the road while they were patrolling in the area, and arrested the suspects after they investigated the situation.House broken into in Davignon Park A private home in Davignon Park in Hinchinbrooke was broken into on the evening of February 12.The home on Birch Lane was empty when one or more individuals came in through the back door. The individual(s) took two 32-inch LG televisions, each of which was worth $700, three bottles of alcohol, and several pieces of lamb that were in the freezer. The total value of the items stolen was approximately $1500.The crime was committed while the house's owner, a 39-year-old man, was in Costa Rica.À neighbour who was keeping an eye on the house alerted police about the crime.Officers from the Haut Saint-Laurent detachment of the Sûreté du Québec arrived on the scene and noticed fresh footprints in the snow.A police investigation has been opened.42-year-old man arrested for driving while inebriated À 42-year-old man was arrested for driving while inebriated early in the morning on February 15 in Godmanchester. At approximately 5 am, officers on patrol from the Haut Saint-Laurent detachment of the Sûreté du Québec stopped a black Dodge Charger on Route 138 when they saw that he was driving at erratic speeds and zig-zag- ging across the road. They intercepted the vehicle near the Rankin Road. The officers noticed that the driver seemed to be under the influence of alcohol, and asked him to submit to a blood-alcohol test. The test showed that he had levels of 139 and 136 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. The individual, who lives in Huntingdon, was released and will receive summons to appear at the Valleyfield courthouse under charges of driving with diminished capacities.Spartan Talk e with Brandon and Greg Basketball BANTAM BOYS: As the end to the season approaches, the bantam boys have kept stacking up the wins.On February 12, they managed to defeat the team from Heritage High School by a score of 46 to 40 in the gold medal game of the SSIAA championship! Franklin now boasts outdoor retreat D Chantal HORTOP It is not uncommon for people to come to the Chateauguay Valley to create a haven for themselves where they can unwind in a quiet rural setting. This is precisely what François Lemieux.formerly of Valleyfield has done, except that a big part of his vision for his retreat is that it should be shared with visitors from the Valley and beyond.Since January 7.the doors at Les Chutes de Franklin, a Nordic-style spa with outdoor facilities on the banks of a stream, have been open on Route 202 in Franklin.Lemieux took an 1840 house built out of river stones and spent three-and-a-half years creating the first outdoor spa in the Chateauguay Valley. He says he has been planning the spa for about ten years, and when he finally came across the property.he knew he had found the ideal place when he was unable to resist the river running through the backyard.Myriam Lemay, who manages the site while Lemieux carries on his day- job at the Good Year plant in Valleyfield, explained that although the location and surroundings may have been perfect, there was no water system installed and no space to set up a septic tank.“It was really abandoned.” she said.but luckily.after some time.one of the neighbours agreed to sell a piece of land to Lemieux enabling him to get started modernizing the house.“There was a lot, a lot.a lot.a lot of work to do.” said Lemay.but Lemieux “did not take a break.” he was spending as many hours on the restoration as he was at his regular job.As the two worked to turn the house into a spa, they did as much recycling of materials as they could, not wanting to waste the beautiful wood that made up parts of the inner structure.: a ahs Owner François | Lemieux and manager Myriam Lemay worked for three-and-a-half years to turn a river- stone house into Les Chutes de Franklin, the only spa Since the opening.Lemay says that they have had customers almost every day at the spa.which offers massage.a wood-fired sauna, outdoor spa.and various relaxation areas. Most of those who have come to use the facilities so far are local.which is not all that surprising when you consider that.as Lemay said.“people have watched us work fon the site] for three and-a-half years.” Though the idea of an outdoor spa may not be appealing to many at this time of year.Lemay explained that the “thermal experience” can be enjoyed just as easily when it is cold.since when you come out of the sauna.you do not feel the cold for a period of time afterward. As it states on the spas website, people living in cold climates, such as that in Scandanavia, “believed that accumulating high heat and then bathing in ice water was a matter of survival to pass through the harsh winters.” Lemieux said that there is a theory The wood- fired sauna is the first step in the outdoor-spa experience.time spent soaking up steam is followed up by a dip in icy water.(photo CH) PAGE 16 THE GLEANER FEBRUARY 23, 2011 of its kind in the Chateauguay Valley.(photo CH) that no matter where a spa is, “if people come in and within 30 seconds they feel more relaxed.” the business will succeed. He added confidently that he believes that “we have that formula.” Lemay noted that there were plans in place to offer facials and nail care.but said that they are also “listening to what people want.” Lemieux said that there are “many ideas to come” for the future of the spa.but that for now they are taking it “one day at a time.” a sentiment that is highly suitable for a facility that encourages customers to take a deep breath and relax./ ; +45, boul, d'Anjou, Châteauguay OYAGED 450.691.5555 * 514.794.7884 ü Fax : 450.691.9330 www.dmctravelinc.com License 702826 Travel Ihe ; Nashville & Memphis.Tennessee , August 17-25, 2011 ; 9days 8 nights Price $ 1 195 per person.double occ.$ 1 460 per person, single occ.ee Caribbean Cruise January 16-27, 2011 4 12 days 11 nights x} Inside : $ 1 165 per person, double $ 1 195 per person, double $ 1 345 per person, double $ 1 585 per person, double Outside : Baicony : Mediterranean couse Carnival Magic ÿ October 15-28.2011 © 13 days / 12 nights Inside : $ 2 699 per person, double | Balcony $3587 per person.double a NE Ii TIME IS RUNNING OUT!
