celebrates ten-year anniversary Chantal HORTOP On March 22, \u201cJ'adopte un cours d'eau\u201d program marked its ten-year anniversary with a celebration at the Biosphere in Montreal.Participants in the program have adopted some 80 rivers in Quebec, and more in other provinces, and have included students from a variety of schools in the Chateauguay Valley.The hands-on environmental program for elementary and high school students grew from the \u201cRiverwatch\u201d program in Chateauguay, New York, having been brought to this area by Jeff Rundell from Chateauguay Central School.Students who take part are taught all about a nearby body of water and the creatures living in it through hands-on sampling, analysis and oberservation.The learning also continues in the classroom when students write reports on their analyses.Altogether, \u201cJ'adopte un cours d'eau\u201d incorporates a variety of school subjects over the course of the project, including ecology, chemistry, life sciences, computer sciences and language skills.The program was organised and made possible by teachers and parent volunteers, with support and funding from the government and the Biosphere in Montreal.Genevieve Audet, who works with the \u201cJ'adopte un cours d'eau\u201d program at the Société de conservation et d'aménagement du bassin de la rivière Châteauguay (SCABRIC), the organisation which coordinates the program in this region, said that over the years, there have been approximately ten schools involved in the program.These schools include Hemmingford Elementary, Heritage into the process due to their love of animals, and that \u201cRiverwatch engages each child at his own particular level.It reaches and teaches every child.It helps them feel a connection to Nature which in turn fosters in them stewardship of the environment.\u201d The elementary school teacher remarked that while the important scientific skills that the students learn are undeniably important, on a larger scale it \u201cempowers children to feel that they CAN make a difference.They feel that they are a part of the scientific process that can help improve the state of the river.The children are being given tools to be able to take responsibility.\u201d This year, Genevieve Audet explained, is \u201cexceptional\u201d in that there are only two schools in the area actively involved in the Easter Apart from the dregs of the jelly beans and the last remaining ears and tails of chocolate bunnies, most of the evidence of Easter has now disappeared.The pastel colours have disappeared from store displays, replaced by a steady stream of summer images and products.However, it is at about his time that animal shelters begin sending out retrospective messages because of the influx of rabbits and other animals at their establishments, pleading with parents not to buy these often-unsuitable pets as Easter presents.While many people choose to buy pets at Easter, any time someone chooses to take on an animal, they should consider their situation carefully before doing so.Not all people or families would make a suitable home for certain pets, and discovering this unsuitability and having to give up a pet is no fun for anyone involved.Should the need to give away a pet arise, the messages from the shelters also ask people to remember that animals cannot simply be left outside to live in the wild, as it is very unlikely that they are equipped to survive the dangers of the outside world.As well as being responsible in their decision to acquire a pet, prospective owners should keep in mind that the shelters are full of wonderful animals waiting for someone to take them home, and that while a kitten or puppy in a pet store might seem tempting, there are many, prominence to the past winter still promise to be a feature of spring.An evidence of this was given last Saturday, when the morning was ushered in with a temperature so high as to make one feel that summer had burst upon them, before things had shaped themselves in readiness for it.This fact, however, in no way detracted from the pleasure experienced by the change.On Monday the atmosphere became cooler, and towards evening rain set in.The sugar season is virtually over, and, we regret to say, has not been a successful one.Although somewhat extended, 30 years ago April 16, 1980 MMM HOWICK PIONEER JOSEPH SIMON DIES After a short iliness, joseph Simon, one of the pioneers of Howick, died on March 24 at the Foyer de Beauharnois.At the age of 89, followed his wife, Brigitte Parent, in death.She had passed away on Oct.24, 1979.Parents of a large and happy family, Joseph and Brigitte gave life to 17 children.Twelve of these survive them as do 60 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.The Simon couple celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary in Sept.1976.Unhappily, the illness of Mrs.Simon lately separated the couple and her husband lived in the Foyer of Beauharnois since Sept.1979.The parents of Joseph Simon moved from St.Etienne in 1903 to settle on the Irish Concession of Howick, on the farm where the the variableness of the weather was opposed to continued runs, and was also deceptive.For instance, Good Friday was a beautiful warm day, causing the snow to disappear rapidly, yet the sap scarcely ran at all.It is estimated that not one half of the usual amount has been made, while some have not yet realized more than one third of last year\u2019s profits.Syrup finds better sale, and is more largely made than sugar, but the difficulty lies in converting both to the station over such desperately bad roads.It is only by coming in contact with such bogs, that this section of country can be fully appreciated.Our roads are now as dry as midsummer, that is, the main highway.Although exempt from epidemics, we have to record a great deal of sickness, the fatalities of late being principally among the youth, induced by pulmonary affections.Poirier family now lives.Joseph met his neighbour Brigitte and they married in 1911.She was 19 and he 20 years of age as they settled into life on a farm.This was sold in 1928 to joseph Lemieux and the growing Simon family moved to the large house on the Chateauguay River once known as Reeves\u2019 Tavern.The historic house was surrounded by 200 arpents of good land and in spite of the difficult years during the depression, Joseph and Brigitte managed to raise their family with hard work and perseverance.Simon was involved in many civic duties; he was churchwarden, municipal councilor and school board officer.Joseph Simon was a hard worker but loved good times too.He liked to join in family reunions with his share of the singing.He knew so many old songs and new ones too; operation took place on Friday morning at a private residence in Saint- Anicet.At approximately 7:15 am, officers from the Haut Saint-Laurent detachment of the Sûreté du Québec burst into a residence on Cazaville Road, having received a call about other criminal affairs.Once inside, they discovered 190 cannabis plants and 1.8 grams of marijuana, which were seized.The total value of the drugs on the black market was estimated to be $285 000.Lamps, fans, transformers and other drug-related equipment were also seized by police.À 49-year-old man, who lived on the property, was arrested on the scene.He was home alone when the officers arrived.The suspect will appear at the Valleyfield courthouse under accusations of production of narcotics with the intention of trafficking.One woman injured in dispute in bar .À Laval woman was slightly injured in a dispute which took place in a bar in Saint- Anicet very early on the morning of April 2.At approximately 2 am, two customers were sitting face-to-face at the bar when one of them became angry and threw a shooter glass at the other.The second woman, aged 42, blocked the glass with her arm, but sustained minor injuries to her right wrist and needed stitches for a deep cut.The 34-year-old woman who had thrown the glass was arrested for armed assault and presented herself to the headquarters of the Sûreté du Québec in Ormstown on April 71-year-old woman had a funny misadventure which had to be settled by the police early in the morning on April 4 in Ormstown.At approximately 7 am, the second-floor resident of a building on Bridge Street returned from work to find a very inebriated young man in her kitchen.He had forced the door open in order to come in.When he saw the woman, and thinking he was in his own apartment, he told her he was waiting for his girlfriend, who lived on the first floor.When officers from the Haut Saint- Laurent detachment of the Sûreté du Québec were called to the scene, they were able to resolve the problem with the help of the young man's mother, who lives with him.The woman decided not to press charges against her neighbour, who she says simply had the wrong apartment.The officers nonetheless arrested the young man for breaking parole.He was later released and will appear shortly at the Valleyfield courthouse.Mailboxes Ormstown There was another wave of damaged mailboxes in the Chateauguay Valley over the long Easter weekend.The Haut Saint-Laurent detachment of the Sûreté du Québec responded to five calls from citizens who had their mailboxes damaged in Ormstown.One mailbox Chantal HORTOP For the first time, on April 6 Ormstown's monthly municipal meeting was held in the auditorium at Chateauguay Valley Regional High School.The change of venue brought in a far larger crowd than the meeting usually attracts, as many residents though that there must be some large announcement or presentation in the cards, but according to municipal officials.it was simply to allow more space for the audience.Meetings are normally held at the town hall on Lambton Street, where there is very little space for citizens to sit in the meeting room.Holding the meetings at CVR is the solution for them moment, and fits in with the growing collaboration between the municipality and the high school.but there was also talk of the possible construction of a new town hall or the renovation of the current building on Lambton Street.The municipality's mayor, Jacques Lapierre, said that the building, which was originally the town\u2019s fire department, \u201cdoes not satisfy the demands of the population.\u201d He stated that an update of one kind or another of the town hall is planned, but warned that \u201cwe are still far\u201d from concrete action, as there is much en Illinois et en Oklahoma.Au commencement des années 1990, à la suite de nombreuses demandes d'amateurs d'art pictural, il a développé son style bien connu en produisant des portraits hommages en mosaïque.De nombreux tableaux de lui ont fait l'objet de tirages limités destinés à des levées de fonds.Depuis 1977, il publie chaque semaine un dessin humoristique dans le journal The Gleaner de Huntingdon.Dans son studio situé près de Huntingdon, l'artiste peintre transpose dans son style réaliste les paysages et les beautés naturelles de la région.«Sa créativité et sa maîtrise s'expriment ne se portera pas acquéreure de l'église catholique Sainte-Agnès-de-Dundee, ce qui pourrait paver la voie à une vente publique ou de gré-à-gré du temple religieux.Lors de leur séance régulière du 5 avril en soirée, les membres du conseil municipal ont unanimement adopté une résolution à l'effet de ne pas engager la localité dans un processus d'achat de l'édifice, construit en 1948.Selon le directeur général et secrétaire- trésorier de Dundee, Stéphane Landry, la municipalité n'a aucunement besoin d'\u2019acheter l\u2019église pour l'utiliser à ses propres fins.«Dans l'immeuble que nous occupons présentement, il y a beaucoup de place.Nous avons le deuxième étage qui sert de centre communautaire.Ce ne serait pas utile de faire payer les citoyens pour entretenir et chauffer un bâtiment que nous n'utiliserions pas de toute manière», a-t-il déclaré en entrevue téléphonique jeudi matin.M.Landry confirme aussi qu'une proposition visant à acheter l'édifice pour la revendre ensuite à un ou des citoyens «pour obtenir un meilleur prix», selon ses dires, avait été évoqué durant la réunion.«Ce n\u2019est pas le mandat de la municipalité de faire du «real estate»», a-t-il fait savoir.Un tant bien que mal le refus des autorités municipales de vouloir s'approprier l'église locale.«Ce n'est pas vraiment une surprise.Nous avons compris que la municipalité n'a pas pour rôle d'acheter un immeuble et de demander aux citoyens de l'entretenir, d'en prendre soin.C'est le message que nous avons perçu».a-t-il confié.Tout ce que le conseiller municipal espère, c'est que l'église ne soit pas laissée à l'abandon et qu'un nouvel acquéreur puisse l'utiliser à d'autres fins pour la collectivité locale.«Nous espérons que l\u2019église puisse servir à quelque chose pour promouvoir le village de Dundee.En tout cas, nous tenons à ce qu'elle ne soit pas démolie.C'est maintenant notre objectif», a-t-il déclaré.Peu de temps auparavant, la municipalité avait été approchée pour acquérir l'église.Selon le conseiller auprès des fabriques pour le diocèse de Salaberry-de- Valleyfield, Gilles Lavigne, une rencontre avait eu lieu le 4 février avec M.Landry, «pour lui expliquer qu'on voulait fermer et vendre l'édifice» Une lettre officielle fut par la suite envoyée aux autorités municipales.Au cours de la séance mensuelle du conseil municipal le ler mars, aucune décision ferme n'avait été prise quant à l'achat ou non du bâtiment.M.Lavigne a indiqué qu'en attente OFFRE D'EMPLOI AS NUNAVUT EASTERN d'une réponse positive ou non de la municipalité pour la vente de l'église, il pouvait recevoir des propositions d\u2019autres acheteurs potentiels.Comme la municipalite ne se montre pas intéressée à l'acheter.l'église pourra être soumise à une vente publique ou de gré-à-gré, à une date qui reste à être fixée.«On est à dresser une liste des offres sur la table», a précise le représentant diocésain.Une fois les offres d'achat déposées à M.Lavigne, elles sont soumises à la
