if I was ready for this,” she says, noting how her answer had been that she was not sure, and so the Medical Centre offered her the chance to work her way into retirement with a reduced of no longer having to work.“I like the work that I do and the people I do it with,” she says of the job she started fresh out of school at 17-years- old in 1962.Over the years, Cartier the Medical centre that latches on to its staff and holds them for decades, and in her 45 years, Cartier Emond has seen a lot come through the doors in terms of doctors, nurses, and staff.Among the many changes that she has witnessed, two stand out as having had a huge influence on her job and the Centre in general: Medicare and technology. The province’s health care system was overhauled in 1970 with the introduction of Medicare, and while the headaches associated with sending bills directly to patients and collecting payments no longer exist, the Medicare system has since become saddled with such heavy bureaucracy that the headaches remain.Even more significant to the Centre’s environment has been the improvements made in office technology in recent years.“I started with an The show dates are December 13, 14 and 15 (matinee and evening) with a special preview show for students in grades 6 on December 12.Tickets are already selling quickly, so reserve yours by calling his life early last week along Rte.138 in Ormstown, a kilometre east of Rte.201.According to police information, a car collided with a heavy truck coming in the opposite direction late in the afternoon on November 12.Towards 5 p.m., the car was travelling east as a semitrailer transporting rolls of paper approached from the opposite direction. The tragedy occurred when the driver of the car tried to pass a vehicle in front of him.“The motorist lost control, resulting in a head- on collision with the truck,” explained Agent Ronald McInnis, spokesperson for the Montérégie Sûreté du Québec (SQ).The two vehicles were found in the ditch.According to McInnis, the car was wedged under the tractor trailer. The accident victim is Jean-Sébastien Billette, a Longueuil resident. The 38- year-old man died on impact. His body was taken to the Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown. The truck driver is a 46-year-old Ormstown resident. He escaped with only minor injuries. It took considerable time to pull the two vehicles from the ditch.A tow truck was necessary to remove the tractor trailer from the car.A backhoe was also needed at the scene.SQ agents from the Haut St-Laurent detachment and accident scene experts have opened an investigation.Heavily damaged, the car and semitrailer were subjected to complete inspections.Collision Also in Ormstown, a second collision involving two vehicles occurred the very next day toward 3 p.m., injuring two.The accident took place when a car travelling along Roy Street pulled onto Rte.138 after making an obligatory stop.It seems the driver did not see the other vehicle approaching the intersection, which made the accident unavoidable. The two drivers suffered minor injuries. They were a 22-year-old woman from Ormstown and a 50-year-old woman from Delson. Both were taken by ambulance to the Suroit Hospital in Valleyfield. Two all-terrain vehicles reported stolen in the Haut St-Laurent Two Polaris all-terrain vehicles were reported stolen last week in the Haut St- Laurent. The first theft was reported November 11 in Ormstown, after an ATV was stolen from a garage adjacent to a home. The thief seized the vehicle after gaining access to the garage through a side door. The vehicle is a yellow 2001 model, with an estimated value of $5,000.A second ATV also mysteriously disappeared from the shed of a home in Très-St-Sacrement.The theft was reported to the Sûreté du Québec the following day.It seems the individual succeeded in entering through the large front door before exiting with the red and blue vehicle, worth an estimated $4,000.Two people arrested for narcotics possession in St-Antoine-Abbé Two young individuals from St- Antoine-Abbé will face justice after being arrested for possession of narcotics for personal consumption on the evening of November 10.Two officers from the Haut St-Laurent detachment of the Sireté du Québec were carrying out their regular patrol at around 8 p.m., when they perceived a car with two passengers inside stopped in the parking lot of the St-Antoine-Abbé Community Centre. When police approached the occupants of the vehicle, they had reason to believe they both had small quantities of hashish and marijuana with them, ready for consumption. An 18-year-old man and a teenager were arrested and later released by way of summons to wait to find out what the legal system has in store for them.www.budgetpropane.com @ 683, chemin Larocque, Valleyfield Firemen from Huntingdon, Godmanchester, and Hinchinbrooke had to use the Jaws-of-Life to free the driver ay] 6 » November 21, 2007 » The Gleaner Recyc-Québec publishes and advisory in favour of reusable bags REINER RV a For the past few days, the media has generally made much of the “beneficial” effects of using traditional plastic bags instead of compostable or biodegradable bags.“In reading the variety of articles on the question, one has the impression that this is an apology for the traditional bag. This is a trap,” remarked Huntingdon’s mayor, Stéphane Gendron.“What the press has generally neglected to mention is that Recyc- Québec has also published a very favourable opinion of reusable bags, and this is the definitive key to reducing the source of pollution caused by traditional plastic bags.On the second page of its advisory, one can read about these bags: “Despite the environmental impacts associated with their production, such as the extraction of non-renewable resources (petroleum products and natural gas) for woven plastic bags, or intensive culture for cotton bags, reusable bags are regarded as being the environmental choice, after at- source reduction, to respond to the problem of shopping bags.” The Town of Huntingdon also deplores the lack of information in the media on the question of compostable or bio-degradable bags.“We are allowed to believe that these bags are more harmful than traditional plastic bags.We need to be careful about what is being suggested. In a framework of organic material collection, these bags could be returned to mature without a problem.Obviously, we need to change our habits in consequence. And with our environmental obligations, everything becomes a question of habits to modify and adopt. Why make an issue of this one story?” asked Mayor Gendron.“With respect to environmental issues, the most difficult change is attitudes. The debates of the last few days are undermining the efforts of municipalities trying to eliminate, as much as possible, the production and circulation of traditional plastic bags by adopting prohibitive measures,” concluded Mayor Gendron.
